With the football season well underway, it’s time for the annual battle between gaming's two major rival simulations: Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) and EA’s FIFA.

FIFA 09 marks an evolution in gaming

Having trailed PES in terms of gameplay for many years, anticipation for the latest FIFA has been at an all-time high, thanks in large part to last year’s much improved FIFA 08 and its superb semi-sequel, Euro 2008.

With Konami having dropped the ball with the disappointing PES 2008, the feeling among many dedicated football game fans is that EA need only avoid disaster with 09 to retain its crown for another year.

But the good news for all concerned is that the company is clearly in no mood to rest on its laurels: evolution is the name of the game for EA right now, and FIFA 09 doesn’t so much meet expectations as blow them away completely.

Make no mistake: this is an incredible football game.

For those upgrading from FIFA 08, the biggest improvement here is the game’s overall responsiveness.

All the in-depth tactics and variety of play from the previous iteration remain intact (complete with a comprehensive trick system ideal for Soccer AM-style showboating), but this time it’s all connected via a slick and intuitive gameplay interface and flexible passing system.

Die-hard PES fans may still balk at the idea of switching to FIFA, given the fact that EA’s series was for so long the weaker game, but a re-evaluation is long overdue.

FIFA has undergone dramatic improvements in the past two years, and now offers as enjoyable a football simulation as has ever been presented in 3D.

For the less committed players FIFA 09 contains all the things you would expect from an EA title: quality visuals and presentation, and countless perfectly recreated teams and rosters - but dedicated players are also admirably catered for, with a wealth of engrossing play modes, and quite frightening depth of play customisation available via the all-new quick tactics system.

And those who like to play seriously are in for a real treat: the Be A Pro mode - which allows you to control one player on the pitch and through a career - here returns in a new, expanded form, and is even playable online, where you can get together with nine friends in a 10-on-10 online match, with all 20 outfield players controlled by real players.

Of course the success of this mode is dependent on the attitude and cooperativeness of your teammates, but it’s an impressive technical feat, and when it works it takes the game to another level.

Taken as a whole, this isn’t just the best FIFA to date: it’s the first next generation football game worthy of the title. Forget any historical preconceptions you may have; this is genuine evolution of a soccer franchise.

PLATFORM: Multiformat (Xbox 360 & PS3 versions tested)
    GENRE: Football

Plug in all related connectors for the Xbox. The Xbox console comes standard with RCA inputs (Three plugs, Red Yellow and White, however there are High-resolution adapters available to connect via S-Video, Coaxial, and also to an HDTV Display)
Get a shoot 'em-up game (suggested titles include Halo 3, Call of Duty: World at War) These are also called "First Person Shooters", or "FPS"
    Play it.
Buy a racing game. (suggested titles include Test Drive Unlimited, Project Gotham 3 or 4, Burnout 3, Need For Speed Underground 1 or 2 or Need for Speed: Undercover)
    Play it.
    Get a steering wheel.
Try the racing game again (notice anything different?)
Buy a role playing game. (suggested titles include Fable 2)
    Play it.
Remember to eat and sleep at some point. (I heard 37 hours straight caused a kid to have a heart-attack and die!)
Go back to playing more games when you can see straight again.

    Tips

Once you've purchased your shootem-up game, buy a tutorial or purchase the strategy guide for use with it. It will help you get used to the controls and develop some key gaming strategies.

Obviously, people have different opinions on what games are fun to them. Ignore those people. The twelve year old that originally wrote this article had it all right. After editing it, I realized it was futile to explain the intricacies of the human mind. Jotting very quick notes about one person's experience describes everything.

Buy a PS2, its better. Just kidding, but seriously - check out what's available, and what the prices are before buying an Xbox; I've known a lot of people who have 2 or 3 systems and only use one, make sure you aren't buying something you don't like. I.E. are the controllers comfortable? How cheap are games? How many games are there? How addicted am I going to get?

    Warnings

Seizures can be induced from gaming consoles. Be sure to strap yourself down.
When playing in a dark room and using great speakers, the sound effects for environments and situations can cause extreme reactions. Adapters are available for surround sound output on the Xbox.

Make sure that you have money to buy games with.
Verify that there is a game store near you or some good friends.
Buy these games as listed, in no particular order:
      NBA 2K6
      Madden NFL 06
Tony Hawks Underground American Waste Land
      Fight Night Round 3
      Open Season
      NBA Live 06
      Fusion Frenzy 2
      College Hoops 2K6
      NHL 2K6
      Begin gaming.
Set all the sports games on easy levels.
The next part is pure skill in the non sport games (you do not have to go online to win these achievements).
The arcade games can be mastered in a few hours, tops.
Remeber to take nice breaks and stretch

      Tips

You can also read part of this article in the official XBox magazine.
You can get all of them in one or 2 games.
Arcade games also can be bought at the same time.
Do not get frustrated if you don't get the achievements in the time given.
