Coming late to this thread, but the East Los Angeles depot was the transfer point for all Union Pacific local service. This included service to Glendale, Pasadena, Long Beach, and San Pedro, as well as Bell, Paramount, and Lakewood on the way. After the late 1930s, this service was all by motor coach. The Union Pacific busses were still running in 1968, and I believe lasted until early 1971 but I have no proof of that. The stops in Bell, Paramount, and Lakewood all required that you tell the driver/ticket agent, as the southbound busses mainly served Long Beach/San Pedro.

At one time there were Union Pacific depots LA&SL actually in Pasadena, Glendale, Long Beach and San Pedro. The San Pedro depot which was called East San Pedro bore a very strong resmblence to the East Los Angeles depot. The Long Beach depot was eventually taken over by the parallel Pacific Electric LA&SL tracks had gone straight south through Lakewood, into downtown Long Beach, where they ran in Ocean to a bridge at San Pedro. Not long after that, Pacific Electric tore down the Union Pacific depot and built their own which was torn down itself a few decades later. The Bell depot is long gone, although I dont know its history. Paramount is still standing and used by the UP as a yard office, but its impossible to get to as the crossing its on was cut and has a huge wall on each side of it. The Lakewood depot was sadly bulldozed by the Union Pacific a couple of months ago. Glendale and Pasadena are both long gone, but I dont know what happened to them.

The East LA depot is now surrounded by fencing on three sides, and the parking lot it is in has fencing around it too, so its not accessible for picture like these great ones here. Its a real beauty and I too wonder why it wasnt used instead of the new Montebello stop. I can only think that the land around it wasnt available, or maybe it was too close to the throat of East LA Yard? But if that were true, then Commerce would be too close to the throat of Hobart.
