TEHRAN (AFP) - Over 100,000 Iranians have bought Renault's Logan car within a week of it going on sale, marking a success for the French manufacturer in its first investment in Iran since the Islamic revolution.
Iranian car manufacturers Iran Khodro and Saipa, which are assembling the car in their own factories, said they had sold over 50,000 models apiece of the car which has a starting price of 6,750 euros (9,000 dollars).
The mass market car -- named "Tondar' or thunder in Iran -- will start to be delivered to customers from May.
"We have had over 50,000 inscriptions for the Tondar in less than a week," said a spokesman for Iran Khodro, a comment echoed by officials from Saipa.
The project signed back in March 2004 had a chequered history and was held up by a disagreement on whether the cars could be exported from Iran to markets where Renault is already present.
The joint venture, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, is the largest direct and long-term investment in Iran by a French firm since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
