The armoured car of one of Iran's opposition leaders, Mehdi Karroubi, was hit by gunfire in the northern town of Qazvin, his party's website reported on Friday, but only the windows were damaged. Karroubi was in town to attend a mourning ceremony for slain opposition protesters organised by a reformist former MP, Sahamnews.org said. "Around 500 basiji (members of the Basij Islamic militia) and residents of nearby villages surrounded the place where he was and attacked the building with stones, breaking windows," it said. After four hours, anti-riot police finally intervened to get Karroubi out of the building. "As his car was pulling away, it was attacked and hit by gunfire. But, as it is an armoured car, only the windows were damaged."

Iranian security forces arrested 4,000 people during the recent wave of anti-regime protests, and half of that number are still being held, the prosecutor general says. The student news agency ISNA and the semi-official ILNA agency report Ayatollah Abdolnabi Namazi says some of those arrested were freed immediately.

"In total, 4,000 people were arrested across the country, and 40 per cent of those arrested were immediately freed," he said. "Currently there are 2,000 people who are still in prison, among whom there are not many students." These are the first official figures for the number of arrests across the country.

                            Executed over election unrest

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran executed two people on Thursday over widespread street unrest that erupted after the Islamic Republic's disputed presidential election in June, an Iranian news agency reported.

The two were among 11 people sentenced to death on charges including moharebeh (waging war against God), trying to overthrow the Islamic establishment and membership of armed groups, the ISNA students agency said.

The executions were the first carried out for election-related incidents and may further increase tension in Iran ahead of possible new anti-government protests next month.

The presidential election, which was followed by huge opposition rallies, plunged Iran into its deepest internal crisis since the 1979 Islamic revolution and exposed widening establishment divisions.

In the most serious violence since the aftermath of the election, eight people were killed in clashes between opposition supporters and security forces on Ashura, the holy Shi'ite day of ritual mourning, that fell on December 27.

"Following the riots and anti-revolutionary measures in recent months, particularly on the day of Ashura, a Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court branch considered the cases of a number of accused and handed down the execution sentences against 11 of those," ISNA said.

"The sentences against two of these people ... were carried out today at dawn and the accused were hanged," ISNA said, adding the sentences had been confirmed by an appeal court.

"The sentences for the other nine of the accused in recent months' riots are at the appeal stage ... upon confirmation, measures will be undertaken to implement the sentences," ISNA said.

ISNA said the charges included membership of two anti-revolutionary groups, including a pro-monarchy association.

A hardline Iranian cleric urged judicial authorities on Friday to execute more opposition protesters to end anti-government demonstrations kindled by last year's disputed presidential election, state radio reported. A day earlier, Iran hanged two men sentenced to death on charges including waging war against God, trying to overthrow the Islamic establishment and membership of armed groups. "I thank the judiciary chief for executing two rioters and urge him to execute others if they do not give up such protests," Jannati told worshippers at Tehran University. Iran's interior minister warned opposition activists on Jan. 5 they risked execution as enemies of God if demonstrations continued. Death sentences imposed on the other nine are at the appeal stage.
