A couple of days ago I read an article in the papers about an Austrian woman who had been captivated since the age of 10 and had just managed to escape from her captor. She had spent 8 years of her youth in a dark and damp cellar in a child molester's house. When she escaped and introduced herself to one of the neighbors, she was described as calm and normal. After the police questioned what had happened during this period of time, she said to have had "sexual contact" with her captor, but did not elaborate. She seemed down to earth and in a perhaps disturbing way not negative when describing her captor.
Some analysts say she probably has the Stockholm syndrome, which means that victims over time become sympathetic to their captors. The name derives from a 1973 hostage incident in Stockholm, Sweden. At the end of six days of captivity in a bank, several kidnap victims actually resisted rescue attempts, and afterwards refused to testify against their captors.
The whole story about this Austrian woman makes me wonder about Iranians in Iran who had lived through and with the regime of the Islamic Republic. In a sense, the Islamic Republic captivated the country with all the people in it. Only this time the captivators were not strangers who came jumping from behind a bush, but were neighbors, friends or even relatives. With their unnaturally imposed religion, law and values they captivated their own people and turned their country into a dark and damp cellar!
After a while the Iranian people being captivated by their captors gave up their fight, their resistance, their revolt against what was happening to them. Some found a way to escape, some did not have the courage or the means, some were too tired. The ones who stayed silently and slowly transformed from being the victim into being an accomplice (!), a being that is used to abuse and captivation. They had accepted their captor for what he was and what he did to them and began to think that this was their part in life.
The young Austrian woman spent the most important years of her life, the age in which ones character is being formed, in an unnatural and disturbing setting. When she was asked how she felt about her captivation she answered that because of her captivation she was able to stay away from the "bad things in life" like alcohol, cigarettes or bad company! The damage has been done. Her character has been formed in a way that will probably never recover into a character that will be able to function normally in society.
This situation is similar to Iranians born in Iran after the Islamic revolution. These people suffer from this same type of Stockholm syndrome. Even if one day the Islamic Republic by some miracle would crumble and fall, how will the freed Iranians function in a new society? Will they step out that dark and damp cellar and smell the fresh air or will they cry out of despair because their only point of reference, their only leader/ captor has gone?
Will it be difficult for them to step out that cellar, because they do not know what will be waiting out there for them? Will they be afraid of what other people might think of them? Are they afraid it might be more difficult for them to confront themselves with the cruelties they have been through than to continue living in the dark cellar where they at least know what to expect? I hope that all the people fighting the captors will be ready to guide the captives once the cellar door opens.

kheili ghashang compare kardi siamak
I was reading about her a couple days ago and it was reported she didnt really want to see her parents. I was a bit surprized that after being in captivity for 8 years she wouldnt want to see her parents, but i guess she may have thought she would never see them again, so its hard adjusting to normal life.

Kidnap girl grapples with freedom
Austrian former kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch has said she is finding it hard to adjust to her new life.
In an interview with Austrian television, she said she could not yet face going out alone four months after escaping from her captor.
She also said she found being in large groups of people overwhelming.
She was forced to live in a cell beneath a house garage from 1998 until she escaped in August. Her captor killed himself hours after her escape.
"I can't go out in public alone. That would be too risky," she said.

Asked if people recognised her in the street, she said: "Yes. Most of the time it is harmless. But now and then I get a brief fright if someone calls out 'hello', if me or the person I am with is recognised and it is a stranger."
She said she found situations involving large numbers of people difficult.
"Sometimes it is really obtrusive for me. I don't like loud voices," she said.
"People have different body odours, they smoke, they wear perfume, they wear flashy, disturbing clothes, they have unpleasant eating habits, they are rude, unfriendly, undisciplined and so on, but that doesn't matter at all.
"I was always a social person and from the outset [of life] had no problems with social contact," she added.
Family toll
She also said she suffered from claustrophobia.
"The first weeks in this prison were incredibly hard, because I freaked out in this little chamber. It was terrible. But with time, I got used to it by imagining something wide and open.
"You just have to learn to adapt and make optimal use of this little room."
Of Wolfgang Priklopil, her abductor, she said he had no "empathy" for her: "I always told him he was incredibly ignorant because he ignored me."
Ms Kampusch, who is now 18, is living on her own in a rented apartment with access to counselling, Austrian media say.
The ordeal of her imprisonment and her subsequent freedom has taken its toll on her family, she said.
"Everyone believes that we [meaning her and her family] have to be super happy now, but really, it's taking a toll on the whole family. They don't have to worry about where I am anymore, but now there's new problems arising."
Bid for freedom
Ms Kampusch, who was 10 when she was abducted in March 1998, escaped when her captor was busy making a phone call on 23 August.
The communications technician had held Ms Kampusch in a small, windowless basement beneath his garage in the commuter town of Strasshof, 25km (15 miles) outside Vienna for eight and a half years.
He committed suicide by jumping under a train after Ms Kampusch escaped.
He was secretly buried at a cemetery south of Vienna on 8 September.

Austrian abductee Kampusch turns TV chat show host
Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian who spent eight years locked in a windowless cell after being abducted in Vienna, turns TV chat show host on Sunday when her debut programme airs on national television.
In "Natascha Kampusch meets..." Kampusch, whose case returned to the spotlight after revelations that another Austrian woman spent 24 years locked in a cellar, interviews former Austrian motor racing star Niki Lauda, who comments they have both had extreme lives.
"Of course I have realised I will always be different, but what I have experienced hasn't affected me in the way people think," Kampusch tells Lauda in the pre-recorded show which was screened to journalists on Friday.
The first of six episodes of the monthly chat show is to be broadcast at prime time on the private PULS 4 channel.
Snatched on her way to school aged 10, Kampusch was held in a cell beneath a house garage from 1998 until her dash to freedom in 2006. Her captor committed suicide after her escape.
Interest in 20-year-old Kampusch's psychological well-being and adjustment to freedom has only intensified since the case of Elisabeth Fritzl came to light.
Fritzl was held by her own father for 24 years in a windowless prison and bore him seven children, three of whom shared her captivity.
The family are now under careful supervision in a hospital and have chosen so far to avoid the media despite massive public interest.
Kampusch by contrast gave a carefully arranged television interview shortly after her escape, and her media appearances since then have been carefully managed by her team of advisors.
MEDIA CAREER
In a statement released by PULS 4, Kampusch said of her show: "I am not a host in the proper sense, but I want to be a dialogue partner for my guests who can ask me questions as well."
During the debut show, Kampusch asks Lauda about his early life, his near-fatal motor racing accident and personal life. At times she appears tentative and softly-spoken, but makes frequent eye-contact with Lauda and carefully considers his responses.
"I was interested to see how you would manage your first interview...I've been interviewed by many professionals and they all ask the same things," Lauda tells her at the show's start.
Although the show was criticised as formulaic and lacking in spontaneity by some in the audience but commentators say it will likely attract a huge number of viewers.
"Recently the role of victim has weighed on her. She told us she wanted to do other things and show what she is capable of," said Kampusch's media advisor Dusan Uzelac.
"She doesn't just want to be the girl in the cellar."
Kampusch, who recently bought the house where she was held captive, has said she also wants to work on charity projects.
Stories continue to circulate about the nature of her relationship with her captor and her relations with her family.
"There has been a lot of publicity about me in the past months. Some things are simply not true. In my own show... I have the possibility to take an active part," she said in her statement.

Kampusch Buys House Where She Was Held Captive
The lawyer of Natascha Kampusch, Gerald Ganzer, confirmed that Natascha bought the house in which she had been held prisoner for more than eight years, CNN reported.

At the beginning of the year Natascha became the owner of the house in a suburb of Vienna. She does not intend to live there, which is why she bought two-thirds of the house in which she was held captive. Talks with the mother of her captor about the last third part of the house are nearing the end and Natascha will soon become the owner of the entire property, Ganzer said.
The house Natascha Kampush will soon own was her dungeon for more than eight years. She had been kidnapped by Wolfgang Priklopil when she was ten years old. In August 2006, when she was 18 year old, she managed to escape, which drove her kidnapper to commit suicide.

Austria cops seek suspect in family's deaths
Police searched Wednesday for a man suspected of killing his brother, sister and their spouses in the same Vienna suburb where a kidnap victim was held for 8 1/2 years.
Josef Branis, 66, is suspected of shooting the two couples following a long-running family feud over rent that resulted in his eviction Monday from his sister's Vienna apartment, police in the eastern province of Lower Austria said.
The bodies were found in two houses in Strasshof, northeast of Vienna. Police said the murders likely occurred Tuesday.
Strasshof is a semi-rural community where an Austrian woman, Natascha Kampusch, was held in a cramped underground cell for more than eight years until her escape in August 2006.
This week's quadruple homicide came to light when family members alerted police late Tuesday, saying they could not contact Branis or the other relatives, chief investigator Leopold Etz said.
A letter left by Branis resembles a will, Etz said. In it, Branis says he did not want his brother and sister, both in their 60s, or their spouses, at his funeral.
Etz said an international arrest warrant was issued for Branis amid speculation that he had fled by train. His bike was found close to a regional train station between Strasshof and the town of Gaenserndorf, the Austria Press Agency reported, citing another official. The area is not far from Austria's border with Slovakia.
Authorities believe the murders could be linked to Branis' eviction. The siblings apparently argued for more than a year about rent increases.
