'The Keeper: The Legend of Omar Khayyam'

Theologians have suggested that Islam, being younger than Christianity, will eventually experience the same growing pains as its sister religion - a Great Schism, perhaps, or Reformation. "The Keeper," writer-director Kayvan Mashayekh's half-modern, half-classical epic, suggests that, in terms of cinema, Islam is at the stage where movies like "Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments" killed the biblical epic. Ambitious, heartfelt and grand in both its ideas and its pride of place (the Middle East), the film suffers from its virtues. It tells two parallel stories - that of the great Persian poet Omar Khayyam (Bruno Lastra), and a 12-year-old Iranian-American named Kamran (Adam Echahly) who hungers for the tales his dying brother never finished telling. As if bowed by their cultural responsibility, the actors are generally far too earnest and emphatic to be more than cardboard cutouts - with the notable exception of a sublime Vanessa Redgrave, who elevates her 10-minute scene into the kind of ethereal realm in which the whole movie, were this an ideal world, might have dwelt. 1:35 (violence, adult content). Iranian film director on jury at Mumbai Film festival

Noted Iranian film director Rasoul Sadr Ameli will be a member of the jury of the International Film Festival in Mumbai in January.
Mr Sadr Ameli's latest film 'I Saw Your Daddy Last Night, Aida' is currently being screened in Tehran.

The director said 'Aida', which was released at an inopportune time during the Ramadan, is still running successfully at the box office.

His next film 'Western Doll,' jointly directed with cinematographer Saba, is getting ready to be shown at the Fajr Festival in the beginning of next year.

Under the Skin of the Country

Although Iranian cinema has managed to survive many world-historical moments—from the overthrow of the Shah to the Islamic revolutions—which would have capsized many a weaker national film culture, it currently faces a new challenge that will truly test its mettle. All seven features in the UCLA Film and Television Archive’s 16th Annual Celebration of Iranian Cinema (which begins Friday), as well as the strikingly contrasting pair of new Iranian films screening at REDCAT on Jan. 30, were made before the ultra-religious former Tehran mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was elected president in 2005—a profound political step backward that already shows signs of ensuring a kind of cultural counterreformation by conservative Islamists, with cinema the most visible and convenient target. If Ahmadinejad has already banned Kenny G, can controversial filmmaker Jafar Panahi (The Circle, Crimson Gold) be far behind?

At the same time, this latest sampling of films comes along during another interesting cultural moment, which may actually be somewhat liberating for Iran’s filmmakers. With both of the country’s dominant artists of the past decade and a half, Abbas Kiarostami and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, spending considerable amounts of time working outside the country (for Kiarostami, projects like the Italian-language omnibus Tickets; for Makhmalbaf, the roundly dismissed Sex & Philosophy), those staying home now have a certain space to themselves while continuing to absorb the influences of the masters.

Films on women's issues top at Iranian film fest

Ten films on women's issues have been selected by critics at Iran's first Female Filmmakers Festival, in which director Dariush Mehrjuii's "Leila" (1997) was voted the best film.
Fifty-two Iranian critics selected the films, produced since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, in the five-day festival which began in the Persian Gulf island of Kish Jan 14, Mehr News Agency reported.

Bahram Beizaii's "Bashu, the Little Stranger" (1987) and Rakhshan Bani-Etemad's "Gilaneh" (2004) finished second and third.

Award winners will be given golden and silver lilies. The lily has been the symbol of woman in Iranian culture since ancient times.

The festival is organised by the House of Iranian Women Artistes.
