What the Bleep!? Down The Rabbit Hole

Before I accepted this review assignment (okay, before I gave myself this review assignment), I was unfamiliar with this independent film. I did a bit of cursory research that led me to believe that the mysteries of Quantum Mechanics would be discussed, perhaps revealing new and interesting developments. You see, I’m deeply interested in science, and having read scholarly books on subjects that range from the inconceivably vast (cosmology) to the inconceivably small (string...

            Tristan + Isolde

The longer I review film, the more convinced I become that there truly are a limited number of plots, simply retooled with variations and settings. Tristan + Isolde is said to be based on legends that may have spawned the Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot love triangle mythology. And there are certainly themes reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. Screenwriter Dean Georgaris has distilled ancient folklore into a highly accessible romance punctuated by brutal violence. It’s a time...

Life Goes On: The Complete First Season

There’s a reason kids cringe when their parents talk about the TV shows they loved. My dad refused to let us watch Pee-Wee’s Playhouse – he still hates the guy – but would benevolently embarrass the crap out of my brother and me when he’d talk about how funny he thought The Beverly Hillbillies was. At one point he even defended Green Acres. I mean, come on!I’d argue that this is because of a certain communal ownership of beloved TV entities. When you’re...

Project Runway: The Complete Second Season

Ah, the American dream: watching a TV show in which famously gorgeous people look at aspiring models and judge them so harshly and without reservation that the contestants break into tears. Good times. The admirable aspect of Project Runway is that it makes no qualms about its ambitions. Like American Idol, it has no desire to be anything more than a place for people who think they’re pretty to get shot down and made to feel terrible. Supermodel Heidi Klum and her arsenal of dressers and...

                  On A Clear Day

Frank Redmond (Peter Mullan) is not having a good day. After decades of selfless devotion to his Glasgow shipbuilding employer, he and a number of his mates have been made redundant, laid off. He takes this blow as a betrayal, as he makes clear to his former employer when called back to answer questions about an industrial accident, “There isn’t one man left who’ll piss on you if you were on fire.” As someone who defined himself as the household...

                    Punky Brewster: Season Three

Okay, not to be too catty and judgmental, but I have to say it: I’m over Punky Brewster. When the first season’s DVD box set came to my desk, it made for a goofy, irreverent blast from my brace-faced childhood, and it was hard to dislike it for that reason. I wrote in my review of that box set, “Full of sugar and spice and everything nice, there's nothing about Punky Brewster that isn't adorable. In fact, this enormously successful mid-80s sitcom is almost too adorable.

Not quite as well oiled and finessed as Fox’s film noir collections, Warner still knows how to put together a collection that can intrigue classic Hollywood neophytes and diehard scholars alike. Their latest box set – appropriately titled The Tough Guys Collection – features movies that may not have instant name recognition within modern mainstream cinema circles, but they sure as hell showcase the kind of baddies every film lover secretly likes more than a little bit.G Men...

Some Like It Hot : Collector’s Edition

This classic comedy, directed and co-written by the famed Billy Wilder, is about two struggling musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) who witness a mob murder in Chicago. Financially strapped and desperate, the men take a chance on an all-expense paid train trip to Miami with an all-girl band to elude the heavies - and to complete the disguise dress up as women. They plan on ditching their drag once they hit Miami, but when one of the men falls in love with the band’s sexy lead singer...
