    Artist Description

    We start off-courze wiz Googoosh:

Faegeh Atashin, nicknamed "Googoosh," is often considered one of the greatest and most popular singers of Iranian pop music. She became a popular child singer and movie star at a very young age and captured the hearts of audiences in the late 1950's and 60's. By the Late 60's Googoosh was beginning to play an influential role in the shaping of Iranian Pop music blending both traditional Persian and a variety of Western styles including Jazz, Blues, Pop Rock, Disco, and Latin.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution her singing career came to an end, until she made her major comeback in 2000, giving several tours throughout the United States and Canada. Since then, she has released three record-breaking albums.

Her discography boasts over 300 songs, about 250 of which are sung in Farsi, and are of a romantic nature. Her vocal command and distinguished voice make her music immediately recognizable among those familiar with her music.

In the early 1990s Googoosh met Massoud Kimiaei--now her husband. On their first date he took her to a private recording studio in Tehran, and after years of silence she put on her headphones and started to sing for the first time in years. Finally, in 2000, Googoosh left Iran and started a concert tour that spanned the globe. Amazingly, even after so many years that she had been away from the scene, her concerts were all sold out. It showed her extreme and enduring popularity among Iranians and non-Iranians. Currently (as of 2005), Googoosh resides in California and frequently travels to Toronto, Canada, where she has a home.

Shadmehr Aghili is an Iranian musician, singer, and composer.

He was born in Tehran in 1973. His father died when Shadmehr was only a school student, and young Shadmehr began studying music with the encouragement of his brother and mother. He learned to play the piano and the violin just before his 12th year. The guitar is also an instrument which Shadmehr learned to play in a dexterous manner. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, he entered a school of arts in Tehran and in a short time showed great intelligence in composing and playing music.

After receiving a music diploma, when pop music was forbidden in Iran, Shadmehr entered the "music school of television". Around 1995 the first pop music permitted after the revolution was played on official Iranian television. This was dramatic music with Ahmad Shamlou's poetry read by Khashayar Etemadi.

Shadmehr composed a great deal of music for other singers. Finally, in 1997, his first album was presented, Bahareman ("My spring"), which was a collection of classic and folkloric music played and arranged by Shadmehr (violin, guitar, piano, keyboard). In the same year his voice was heard in Mabood, his first vocal music, and afterward he continued work that resulted in Mosafer ("The traveler"), his first complete vocal album. In 1999 he made Dehati ("The villager"), an album with rock and roll, 6'n'8 and popular works. After its release none of his work has been permitted to play on TV in Iran or be released as an album. From 1999 to 2002, he acted in two musical movies and worked for many other artists as player, composer and manager.

After these problems, in 2002 he migrated to Canada in order to create new works far from the pressure of Iran's government.Adamforoush ("Traitor", 2004) and "Popcorn" are his most recent albums released in Canada and the U.S.

Hayedeh (also transcribed Haideh or Haydeh; هایده in Persian) (1942 - January, 20 1990) was an Iranian pop and classical singer who died in exile.

Hayedeh was born in the Iranian capital Tehran. Her career began as a singer on a Tehran Radio program called Gol-ha-ye Rangarang (Colorful Flowers) directed by Davood Pirnia. She studied Avaz (Iranian vocal music) with the great Iranian violinist and composer Ali Tajvidi. "Azadeh" (music by A. Tajvidi, lyrics by Rahi Moayeri) became Hayedeh's first hit, performed on Radio Tehran with the Gol-ha Orchestra in 1968. Apalon Records in Tehran released "Azadeh".

In the 1970s Hayedah added pop-music to her classical Persian repertoire. In the course of her career Hayedeh worked with several composers and songwriters, such as Ali Tajvidi, Farid Zoland, Anoushiravan Rohani, Sadegh Nojuki, Andranik and Mohammad Heydari. Prominent lyricists she worked with included Esmaeel Navabe Safa, Bijan Taraghi, Leila Kasra (aka Hadieh), Homa Mir-Afshar and Ardalan Sarfaraz.

Shortly before the Iranian Revolution in 1978, Hayedeh emigrated to the United Kingdom. She moved on to the United States in 1982 to continue her career.

From 1982 until the end of her life, Hayedeh lived in Los Angeles near her sister, Mahasti, also a well-known Iranian singer. The growth of the Iranian-American community in Southern California (due to the increasing number of Iranians leaving Iran to escape the fundamentalist government) bolstered Hayedeh's career in the 1980s. Hayedeh's political and nostalgic songs such as "Rouza-ye Roshan Khodahafez" ("Goodbye Daylight") and "Faryad" ("Cry") became very popular with the Iranianexile community. Taraneh Records, Pars Video, MZM and Caltex Records - four California-based leading Persian music companies - released most of her songs.

According to Prof. Erik Nakhjavani in Encyclopedia Iranica: "Analogues to Delkash, before her, Hayedeh sang with technical authority and passionate energy. Her laryngeal control made it possible for her to produce a series of graceful vibrato and glissando vocalizations required by the Avaz [Persian voal music]. She could smoothly pass from the upper reaches of her alto voice to the lower, fuller, and darker range of the contralto. This mixture of strong laryngeal strength and learned vocal technique gave her alto-contralto voice a rare, powerful resonance and texture in the performance of the Avaz. Furthermore an acute sense for musical timing, the rhythmic flow of vocal music, affective musical phrasing, and poetic delivery enabled her to express and interpret effectively any songs she sang."

In the 1980s Hayedeh regularly appeared in programs on the Los Angeles-based Jaam-e Jam TV founded by Manouchehr Bibiyan and a few other Iranian artists in exile. In addition to criticizing Iran's fundamentalist régime on the programs, she also receorded at Jaam-e Jam Studio more than 40 music videos which were secretly distributed in Iran. Hayedeh also twice traveled to London and gave two concerts alongside a complete orchestra (conducted by Farnoush Behzad) at the Royal Albert Hall. She also once appeared at UCLA with a Persian instrumental ensemble led by Manouchehr Sadeghi. She also gave a concert in Israel, home to thousands of Iranian Jewish immigrants. Her concert in Israel was primarily for her good publicity, this was because of a statement she has made some time back which some Iranian jews deemed anti semetic.

Hayedeh died at the age of 47 from a heart attack due to drug overdose some hours after a concert at the Casablanca Club in San Francisco, California. Sadly, like many other prominent Iranian singers, Hayedeh had involved herself with alcohol and drugs, which lead to poor health shortly before her death. Khosrow Motarjemi, an Iranian IT expert in California, reportedly made a video of this concert, which was released privately and has reached the hands of many fans. Hayedeh told people that night, "The life is like an express train and we have to use our time... I am going to God's House; who knows what will be happened in future, perhaps I will not alive tomorrow...". Her last song of the performance was "Man Mikham Be Khoune-ye Khoda Beram" ("I am going to God's House"). The lyricist of this song, Leila Kasra (Hedieh), died of cancer a few months before Hayedeh's death.

Hayedeh's funeral took place in Los Angeles' Westwood Cemetery: thousands of her fans attended.

Hayedeh married three times and left three children named Kamran, Keyvan and Noushin Nouri. They all live in the US and are not active in the music industry.

Siavash Shams (in Persian: سیاوش; born January 26, 1962 in Ahvaz, Iran) is a Persian Pop singer and songwriter who has released 6 successful albums. He brings an electricity and style to the stage playing sold-out venues around the world including: Caesar's Palace, Hollywood Palladium & El Rey theatre in Los Angeles, the Hippodrome and Le Palace in London, and Aughenhausen Coliseum in Germany and numerous other venues with capacities from 1,000 to 12,000.

He blasted onto the Persian music scene in 1985 with his debut album "Hamsayehhaa", which to date is the best selling Persian album of all time. The album was produced by the well-known Persian producer Elton Farokh Ahi. Young and fresh, with a sizzling look and voice, he was an instant success. The album broke all sales records in the U.S., Europe and Canada, selling over 500,000 copies, with its breakthrough song, "Persian Girl" or "Dokhtar Irooni". His follow up album "Sahneh" in 1992 was an amazing album as it became a big hit. The title song "Sahneh" completely changed the style of Persian music, mixing a modern beat and style, which not only showcased his amazing vocal range but established him as a solid songwriter and musician as well. 6 out of the total 8 songs from the album became big hits. "Pedar" was a amazing album with instsnt hits like "Dokhtareh Choopoon", "Tou", "Baroon" and "Begoo Areh". Pedar ("Father" in Farsi,) the title song from the album "Pedar" was written by himslef for his own father. Siavash also wrote another song for his father that was out on his website when his father passed away in 2003. In 1996 he released "Didar" with Susan Roshan that was aslo a top sellers with many classic hits. "Faryad" (Farsi for "Scream") was released in 1998 and was a smash, selling out of stores, 35,000 copies in the first 3 months. The album was produced by himself. The now classic "Boro Dige Dooset Nadaram" became a huge hit, with its upbeat, spirited lyrics written by Siavash about losing love and regaining your life, "Go away, I don't love you any more" became the song of a generation. With this album Siavash also began to cross over into a world market with his breakthrough Spanish hit, "Historia de Amour" which has been played in radio stations in Mexico and the hit English single "Grace".

In 2001, after 3 years, Siavash released a new album "The Voice". The album did not do as well as his previous albums, primarily because most of the songs were in English, but it did have one huge hit " Heddieh Iroon". The song was written by Siavsh after he recieved a letter from a fan in Iran.

In 2003, Siavash married his long time American manager and currently lives with her in Los Angeles. That year he also released a song on his website that was up for download for free. The song "javoonaayeh Irooni" was a political song about the freedom of young people in Iran. The song was the first Persian rock song and was and still is liked by many.

In 2005, he announced that he will be releasing two new albums, a Persian album named "Seven" and an English album named "Belive".

Leila Forouhar (in Persian: لیلا فروهر, born 1958 in Ishafan, Iran) is a legendary Iranian singer and actress whose popularity in countries like Iran and Tajikestan — but particularly Afghanistan — has spanned decades of time. A multi-talented star who is noted for not only for her acting ability but also her voice, dancing ability and beauty.

Leila is the daughter of the late Iranian actor Jahangir Forouhar. He had already established a solid background in the Iranian entertaintment industry by the early 70's. Her father was to have a great influence on the future singer and she has spoken of this in detail in her interviews. She started following the foot steps of her father to movies, with her initiation beginning with the minor roles she played in various movies that were based mainly on the social issues of the Shah era. With time, she was able to secure a child star title and especially with the release of “Soltaneh Ghalbhaa” (King of Hearts), her fame had already spread to all three Persian countries. By her teenage years, she was already posing modeling shots for top fashion magazines along her work as an actress. Playing such various roles from the girl next door ("Ezteraab") to a wanderer ("Three Sisters") to a drug addict ("The Thirsty Ones"), her image was well cemented in Persian society.

In 1974, Leila began a new direction to her career when she announced her break into the music industry. After a few voice tests, Leila was immediately given an opportunity to record an album. The instant best-seller titled "Leila Forouhar" recorded in Iran flew off the shelves in Afghanistan in less than a day. The music videos accompanying this album were TV stations' most requested for months, and to this day remain classics. Particularly the songs "Cheshma-e-Nour" and "Eshgh Mesle Atisheh" made headlines in distinct entertainment publications which raved about the new singing sensation. A huge success, it was praised as the greatest album introduced to the Afghan society by a female singer. So well was its reception that she immediately unseated the then favorite singer Googoosh as the most popular female singer. The young Leila which had been seen as a child star was dancing rhythmically to tunes that absorbed her early fans but critics as well.

A favorite of columnists who followed her every move to report to the enthusiastic public, she was the face of all glossy magazines in Afghanistan. Her hairstyle from "Cheshma-e-Nour" became for years the most sought after look in Kabul. This was the first time a patriarchal society had bestowed a female artist such affection. A survery conducted in the 70’s named Leila as every Afghan man’s Fantasy Mistress.

A round of performances followed until Iran became entangled in political turmoil.

The Iranian Revolution based on religious ideology opposed any form of art that it deemed corrupt. A revolutionary court order named popular singers and actors (both male and female) to show up for a court hearing. In this Leila was the third person listed. It was well ingrained that these artists must renounce their careers or face legal consequences. Without any choice, many singers accepted the orders and withdrew to oblivion.

With the outbreak of war with neighboring Iraq, the Iranian movie and music industry was debilitated. Initially Leila's family decided to stay in Tehran in hopes of end of fighting a return to the pre-revolutionary era. With the elongation of the war year , Leila decided to leave the country. So in 1986, she and her family moved to France. Up until 1988 Leila she remained in Paris; however, passive as an artist. During this time, much of the press speculated about Leila's possible comeback to singing. Afghan journalists even traveled to France to interview with the diva but were unsuccessful, as a result of her desire to keep a low profile. But her silence was soon to break.

In 1988 Leila and her family moved to the United States quickly establishing contact with Los Angeles based Iranian artists who had fled at the outbreak of the revolution. That same year, she released "Makhmal-e-Naz" and in 1989 “Hedieh” (The Gift). A phenomenal success, "Hedieh" was received with equal acclamation from both critics and fans. The hit song "Ey Dil" (My Heart) became immensely popular, rekindling a craze similar to that brought on by pre-revolutionary favorite "Cheshma-e-Nour." As a matter of fact, in one of her performances after the release of "Hedieh" it was reported that the concert hall echoed more of the attendee applause than the music itself. Soon after an album a year kept fans on their edge. During the 90's she re-established her reputation as favorite female singer, often teaming up with other Persian artists to deliver numerous notable albums.

In 2005, Leila married a Los Angeles based Iranian-American businessman in a ceremony that included many colleague singers and entertainers. She is said to maintain a balance between her marriage and career. Covering three generations of admirers now, she is popular among fans of all ages, some of whom weren't even born when her first album was released.

Her two songs, "Cheshma-e-Nour" (1974) and especially "Ey Dil" (1989) have been marked as immortal melodies, contributing to the enduring popularity of the singer.
