Iranian culture has not been confined to the geographical boundaries of present day Iran. Both in pre-Islamic and Islamic times Iran has had a profound influence on other cultures. Persian language and literature dominated Mughal India as well as Anatolia for several centuries, and Persian masters of poetry were followed in Indian and Ottoman courts as well as the courts of Central Asia.

It is regrettable that the value of contributions that Iran has made to world civilization has at times been overshadowed by the present political environment and debate.

I hope that the Encyclopaedia Iranica transcends all political inclinations, while accurately portraying every aspect of Iranian life and culture from pre-history to the present. The objective of the Encyclopaedia Iranica has been to elucidate not only the political, economic, and administrative history of the Iranian world, but also the Iranian contributions to the fields of art, architecture, literature, sciences, and music.

It is gratifying that practically all the outstanding scholars of Iranian Studies worldwide participate in this commendable enterprise of Columbia University.

The enduring efforts of the Editors of the Encyclopaedia in bringing this monumental work to publication are greatly appreciated. I wish its editors and staff every success in realizing their goal.

CHALLENGE FUTURE CONFERENCE

Saturday June 30th, 2007 the Conference CHALLENGE FUTURE that took place this weekend in Bochum, Germany allowed a meeting and debate amongst International celebrities but also former heads of State and intellectuals from all 5 continents. Shahbanou Farah Pahlavi was amongst the prestigious personalities present and it was an occasion for her Majesty to express her wishes that the World and Democratic Media pay open attention to the pleads of the Iranian youth and of Iranian Women in particular. She also expressed to see more contact and exchange between Iranians from Inside and outside her home country. It was also an occasion for the Former Empress of Iran very much active during her reign in encouraging Sports as a priority to insist on the importance of Sportsmen and Sportswomen in serving as role models to society and that this also implies a great sense of duty and responsability for all concerned.

The two days conference which concluded on Sunday with a Concert by Latin American musician Santana and other celebrities was also an occasion for a friendly and enriching exchange between the Shahbanou and some of historical international icons of the last 30 years such as Mr. Lech Walesa, Mr. Desmond Tutu both Nobel Peace Prize Laureates who particularly appreciated the Shahbanou's presence and interest in the challenges of the youth in newly founded Democratic States as Poland and South Africa.

During the conference the Shahbanou was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of Iranian Compatriots present at the Conference and signed copies of her recently published memoires. Proving if needed of the Former Empress' popularity amongst the Iranian Diaspora.

About Lech Walesa: Born on September 29, 1943 in Popowo, Poland Mr. Lech Walesa is a Polish politician, a former trade union and human rights activist and also a former electrician. He co-founded Solidarity the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
About Desmond Mpilo Tutu (born 7 October 1931) is a South African cleric and activist who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. Tutu was elected and ordained the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, and primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa now the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He is also a recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism and was also rewarded with the Magubela prize for liberty in 1986 Desmond Tutu is committed to stopping global AIDS, and has served as the honorary chairman for the Global AIDS Alliance. In February 2007 he was awarded Gandhi Peace Prize 2005.

About Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947), known simply as Carlos Santana or Santana is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican-born American Latin rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band going mostly under the title 'Santana,' which created a highly successful blend of salsa, rockblues, and jazz fusion. Their sound featured his often high-pitched and distorted guitar lines set against Latin American instrumentation such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades, and experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Over his career he has sold an estimated 85 million albums worldwide.

The case of Nazanin Fatehi a young girl in her teens who is being tried for a 2nd time for Murder of her Rapist has drawn an international wave of protests from hundreds of thousands of Human Right Activists around the world. The Iranian Diaspora has been particularly sensitive to the Campaign launched by former Miss World Canada Nazanin Afshin-Jam to save her namesake in Iran through an online petition that has thus far drawn more than 335361 signatures worldwide. A Lily Mazehari to stop other Human Rights abuses such as stoning.



Now another voice has been also joining her name to these worthwhile struggles in the person on the former Shahbanou of Iran: Farah Pahlavi.

If to date the Empress has kept herself away from any form of open partisan support it has been to avoid any political recuperation of these legal cases and also in order to prevent any further predicament for those directly concerned by the Iranian Judiciary. As a public figure however she has recently contacted the new UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who has succeeded to Mr. Kofi Annan in the hope of alerting the UN secretary and Human Rights Office on the case of Nazanin Fatehi and other young women with similar cases.

A very bold letter coming from a woman who was happy to watch her husband murder innocent iranians fighting for their freedom under his rule. She is like the opposition party, its all good to bring up the bad points and tell people what their doing wrong when their not in power, once they get in power the understand the true extent of the problems within the iranian society, not to advocate full support for the current iranian regime, but under the present circumstances their doing better than the previous regime of the shah imo!

I think we all need a closure to the shah chapter of iran, its not helping when farah and her son keep coming on the media with alot of the time pointless nonsense arguments which totally go against what they implemented in iran before.

You think this is bad, you need to read the memoirs of those tortured under savak who were known to be the most brutal secret police of its time. Iran now is slightly better than pre 1979 in terms of police brutality but it has a long way to go.

قرار است این کنفرانس در پایان ماه میلادی جاری (ژوئن) در شهر بوخوم آلمان برگزار شود که موضوع اصلی مورد بحث "حقوق زنان و کودکان" خواهد بود.

اسقف بزرگ ادموند توتو، تلاشگر حقوق انسانی در آفریقای جنوبی، در سال 1984 به خاطر تلاشهای خود در راه آشتی دادن سفید پوستان و سیاه پوستان آن کشور به دریافت جایزه صلح نوبل نائل گردید و آقای شیمعون پرس در سال 1995 به دنبال امضای قرارداد صلح اوسلو بین اسرائیل و فلسطینیان جایزه صلح دریافت کرد.

Friday evening, Valentino served up another gala evening in a temple in the Roman Forum, for 500 guests including former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Acrobats wearing Valentino gowns danced above the ruins, as lighting of different colors transformed the Colosseum, symbol of Imperial Rome.

Earlier Saturday, Valentino offered a brand new winter couture wardrobe of 61 outfits to a star-studded audience gathered in a former medieval convent near the Vatican. It was his first show in 17 years in the city where he began his climb to the top of the fashion ladder. Since the early 1990's Valentino has spent his fashion time between Paris and Milan.

Friday the designer opened a retrospective exhibit of his style in the glass and stone venue by Richard Meier, which encases one of ancient Rome's most sacred monuments, the Ara Pacis. The exhibit, part of which can be seen from the street, is open until the end of October 2007.

To mark his 45th anniversary, Valentino launched a new perfume that will be on the market in the fall, Rock 'n' Rose Couture.

Toasting his longtime friend, Valentino's business partner Giancarlo Giammetti recalled their first years in Rome as two penniless young men with a dream.

'Fame and fortune have not changed him. He is still the same little guy I met 45 years ago,' Giammetti said.

This Wednesday, the two Former First Ladies of Iran and Egypt, led the procession to Egypt's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the massive triangular monument where Sadat is buried, and placed flowers at his grave. After paying their tribute they led the procession to the Al Rifai Mosque where the late Shah is buried for a similar ceremony that was followed by a reunion with all those present who made the trip to Cairo.
