          Suicide bombers' 'ordinary' lives

Three young men from West Yorkshire were killed in last Thursday's bomb blasts in London. Initially they would have been treated as victims, now it is widely accepted they are the perpetrators of Britain's first suicide bombing.

HASIB MIR HUSSAIN, 18, FROM LEEDS
Teenager Hasib Hussain had been known as a tearaway during his early teens.

Newspapers reported how he would start fights with fellow pupils at the Matthew Murray Secondary school in Leeds.

He left school in July 2003 without attaining a single GCSE.

Around this time, he was sent to Pakistan to visit relatives. He also went on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, grew a beard and began to wear robes.

Despite becoming devoutly religious, he was arrested for shoplifting during 2004.

Neighbours said the 18-year-old had lived all his life in Colonso Mount in the Holbeck area of Leeds. One neighbour described the family as "very nice people".

He said: "We all knew them but I wouldn't say I knew them well. They were just a very nice family."

Egyptian Biochemist Jailed in U.K. Attacks

LEEDS, England - Police in Cairo detained a biochemist who studied in the United States and taught at a university in Leeds — the home base for at least three of the London bombers. Investigators in Britain raided an Islamic book shop and the Egyptian's home, searching for explosives and other evidence Friday. In another sign of the investigation's widening global reach, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said authorities were trying to determine whether any of the four "foot soldiers" — suicide bombers who ranged in age from 18 to 30 — had ties with Pakistan-based cells of the al-Qaida terror network.

Two Arrested in London Subway, Bus Blasts

LONDON - Police in London have arrested two men in connection with four attacks on three subway trains and a double-decker bus on Thursday, a scene hauntingly similar to deadly explosions set off by four suicide bombers exactly two weeks before. It was an inescapable message that life in London now means living with the threat of terror. The explosive devices were either faulty or too small to cause bloodshed, and the only reported injury turned out to be an asthma attack. But the lunch-hour blasts rattled a capital already on edge after the July 7 explosions, which killed 52 people and four suicide bombers.

LONDON - Police shot and killed a man at a London subway station on Friday, a day after the city was hit by a second wave of terror attacks in two weeks.

Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man had died after being shot by armed officers at the Stockwell subway station in south London. A witness said police pursued a man into a subway car, and an officer shot the suspect five times.

Elsewhere, eyewitnesses reported that police had cordoned off a mosque in east London. Police had no immediate details. But a Muslim leader said it was evacuated following a bomb threat.

British Transport Police said the Northern and Victoria Tube lines, which pass through Stockwell, were suspended because of shooting.

Passengers said they saw police pursuing a man who appeared to be of Pakistani or Indian descent. Some said police shot him when he tripped. But one witness told the British Broadcasting Corp. that police "pushed him onto the floor and unloaded five shots into him."

London Police Nab Man in Latest Bombings

LONDON - Plainclothes police chased a man in a thick coat through a subway station, wrestled him to the floor of a train car and shot him to death in front of stunned commuters Friday. Police said the shooting was "directly linked" to the investigations of the bomb attacks on London's transit system.

Police later announced the arrest of a man in the south London neighborhood of Stockwell — the same area where the shooting occurred — in connection with Thursday's attacks. The man was arrested Friday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said.

He is the only person arrested in connection with Thursday's attacks. Two men detained Thursday — one near the scene of one attack and another near Prime Minister Tony Blair's Downing Street residence — were later released without charge.
