    Ehud Olmert

Ehud Olmert (IPA /ɛhud ˈolmert/; Hebrew: אהוד אולמרט; born September 30, 1945) is the 12th and current Prime Minister of Israel.

Olmert became Prime Minister on April 14, 2006 [1] but has been exercising the powers of the office since they were transferred to him on January 4, 2006 after Ariel Sharon suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke. Olmert's title for that period was "Acting" Prime Minister. [1]

Previously, Olmert was the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel, the Finance minister, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor, as well as the Minister responsible for the Israel Lands Administration. [2].

Olmert is married and is the father of four. He has for decades been a devoted fan of the Beitar Jerusalem football club.

    Youth and military service

Born near Binyamina in the British Mandate of Palestine, Ehud Olmert is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with degrees in psychology, philosophy and law.

Olmert's childhood included membership in the Beitar Youth Organization and dealing with the fact that his parents were often blacklisted and discriminated against due to their affiliation with Herut, the opposition to the long-ruling Mapai party. However, by the 1970s this was proving less detrimental to one's career than during the 1950s, and Olmert succeeded in opening a successful law partnership in Jerusalem.

Olmert served with the Israel Defense Forces in the Golani combat brigade. While in service he was injured and temporarily released. He underwent many treatments. Later he completed his military duties as a journalist for the IDF magazine BaMahane. During the Yom Kippur war he joined the headquarters of Ariel Sharon as a military correspondent. Already a Knesset member, he decided to go through an Officer's course, at the age of 35, in 1980.

Ehud Olmert is also a terrorist ruling a Terrorist State of Israel. This terrorist state ocuppy several countries in the region of Middle Easte and is acused of War Crimes or terrorism of state.

    MK and Minister

Olmert was first elected to the Knesset in 1973 at the age of 28 and was re-elected seven consecutive times.

During 1981-1988, he was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee and has also served on the Finance, Education and Defense Budget Committees.

He served as Minister without portfolio, responsible for minority affairs (1988-1990), and as Minister of Health (1990-1992).

    Mayor of Jerusalem

From 1993 to 2003, Ehud Olmert served two terms as Mayor of Jerusalem, the first member of Likud or its precursors to hold the position. During his term in office, he devoted himself to the initiation and advancement of major projects in the city, the development and improvement of the education system, and the development of road infrastructure. He also spearheaded the development of the light rail system in Jerusalem, and the investment of millions of sheqals in the development of mass transportation options for the city.

    Minister and Vice Premier

Ehud Olmert was elected as a member of the sixteenth Knesset in January 2003. He served as the head of the election campaign for the Likud Party in the elections, and subsequently was the chief negotiator of the coalition agreement. Following the elections he was appointed as Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor. From 2003-2004, he also served as Minister of Communications.

On August 7, 2005, Olmert was appointed as acting Finance Minister, replacing Benjamin Netanyahu, who had resigned in protest against the planned Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip[3].

Olmert, who had originally opposed withdrawing from land captured in the Six-Day War, and who had voted against the Camp David Peace Accords in 1978, is a vocal supporter of the Gaza pullout. After his appointment, Olmert said:

"I voted against Menachem Begin, I told him it was a historic mistake, how dangerous it would be, and so on and so on. Now I am sorry he is not alive for me to be able to publicly recognize his wisdom and my mistake. He was right and I was wrong. Thank God we pulled out of the Sinai."[4]

During Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's second term, Olmert was Vice Prime Minister, and was widely viewed as Sharon's right hand man. He was a vocal supporter of government policy and was the most important ally of Sharon during the September 2005 unilateral disengagement plan. When Sharon announced his leaving the Likud and the formation of a new party, Kadima, Olmert was one of the first to join him.

    Acting Prime Minister

On January 4, 2006, Olmert became Acting Prime Minister of Israel as a result of the serious stroke suffered by Ariel Sharon. The elections scheduled for March 28 took place as scheduled.

In the light of reports that Sharon may never recover to the extent of being able to resume work, Olmert was seen as likeliest person to lead Kadima into the elections. Under Israeli law, if Sharon was declared "permanently incapacitated" by the Attorney General, Olmert would continue as Acting Prime Minister for 100 days after which a permanent Prime Minister must be chosen. The elections, however, were due less than 100 days from the occurrence of Sharon's stroke. Since Sharon's was declared thus in April 2006, Olmert was chosen as successor to Sharon by Kadima.

In the days following the stroke, Olmert met with Shimon Peres and other Sharon supporters to try to convince them to stay with Kadima, rather than return to Likud or, in Peres' case, Labour. Peres has announced his support for Olmert, as has popular Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who is regarded as the strongest political force other than Olmert within Kadima.

On January 16, 2006, Olmert was elected Acting Chairman of Kadima[5] and number 1 candidate in the March 28 elections. [6]

On January 24, 2006, Ehud Olmert, in his first major policy address since becoming Israel's acting prime minister, said at the Herzliya Conference that he backed the creation of a Palestinian state, and that Israel would have to relinquish parts of the West Bank to maintain its Jewish majority. [citation needed]

In a number of interviews to the Media during the election campaign for the 17th Knesset in 2006, Ehud Olmert introduced to the public his convergence plan.

In the Elections for the 17th Knesset on March 28, despite scoring a weaker-than-expected showing of 29 seats, Olmert's party, Kadima, was still the largest block in the Knesset and thus the first choice for assembling a coalition. In his victory speech, Olmert promised to make Israel a just, strong, peaceful and prosperous state, respecting the rights of the minorities, cherishing education, culture and science and above all—striving to achieve lasting and definite peace with the Palestinians. Olmert stated that as Israel is willing to compromise for peace, the Palestinians must be flexible in their positions as well. He stated that if the Palestinians, with Hamas now leading the Palestinian Authority, refuse to recognize the State of Israel, then Israel "will take her own fate in her hands" directly, implying unilateral action. The future of the next governing coalition largely depends on the goodwill of other parties to cooperate with the newly elected prime minister.

As of Friday, April 14, 2006, Sharon is no longer in the “temporarily incapacitated” state, having been in the hospital for 100 days--rather he is now "permanently incapacitated". On April 11, the Israeli Cabinet appointed Olmert Interim Prime Minister, effective April 14, unless Sharon's health were to improve. As this did not happen, Olmert became the Prime Minister of Israel on April 14, officially replacing Sharon. [7]

Olmert was elected to the 17th Knesset in 2006.

    Prime Minister

On May 4, 2006, Olmert presented his new government to the Knesset. Olmert became Prime Minister and Minister for Welfare. The control over Welfare Ministry is expected to be given to United Torah Judaism if it will join the government. Olmert would, however, remain Minister of Welfare as UTJ usually prefers to manage government ministries from a Deputy Minister position.

On May 24, 2006 Olmert was invited to address a joint session of the US Congress where he stated that his government would proceed with a unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank if no Palestinian partner came forward. Olmert was the third Israeli Prime Minister to have been invited to speak at a joint session of Congress. On June 4, 2006 Olmert announced he will meet Mahmoud Abbas to resume talks on the Road map for peace.

Currently in July 2006, he is facing a major crisis with Lebanon especially with Hezbollah the country's militant group which is supported by Iran which prone the destruction of the Jewish Nation. In a form of self-defence according to many allies (including the United States), Israel had started to mount multiple air attacks over several areas in the Lebanese country in which had created outrage in some countries. On the recent conflict, Olmert mentionned that air strikes will not stop until two Israeli soliders kidnapped by Hezbollah are released. However, many other world leaders including French President Jacques Chirac wanted the air strikes to be stopped.

    Foreign policies

    Attitude toward Iran

    Olmert compares Ahmadinejad to Hitler

In an interview with German daily Bild Prime Minister Ehud Olmert launched a scathing attack against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, referring to the Iranian president as a “psychopath” and comparing him to Adolf Hitler. “He is a psychopath of the worst kind,” Olmert was quoted by the newspaper as saying. “He speaks as Hitler did in his time of the extermination of the entire Jewish nation.”[8]

    Olmert and Iran's nuclear program

In May 2006 Olmert claimed that Iran is just a few months away from acquiring the technological know- how that will allow it to build an atomic bomb.[9] However, he said it was unlikely Israel would act on its own, diplomatically or militarily, to deal with the problem. In 1981, Israel's air force attacked the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak, destroying the facility. But Olmert said the situations cannot be compared, and Israel will try to persuade the Western world to impose sanctions on Iran.[10]

Olmert's feelings on Iran and Islamic Fundamentalist States

In an interview with CNN in 26 May 2006, Ehud Olmert claimed that Israel and the western world can not see the Iranian regime due to its Islamic nature among other things. He said: "There is a Western world. There is America. There is Great Britain and Germany and France and Russia and China and other nations. I doubt that there is one country amongst those I mentioned which has a desire to see Iran, with its fundamentalist, Islamic, extremist government, possessing nuclear weapons."[11]

    Allegations

In the 1970s, Olmert was rumored to be a party to a complex scheme involving well-known Jerusalem businessmen, organized crime, corrupt legislators, and retired General Rechavam Ze'evi. This affair was documented in investigative journalist Aryeh Avneri's Ha'tvusa in 1992. During the run-up to the Ze'evi libel suit, Olmert allegedly took funds from the Likud treasury for his defense fund, although his lawyers were from his own law firm, which would effectively constitute bribery. [citation needed] All accusations against Olmert were eventually settled out of court.

Israeli businessman David Appel has been suspected of bribing both Sharon and Olmert, while he was mayor of Jerusalem, in what is known as the Greek island affair.

On February 20, 2006, it was disclosed that an inquiry is being carried out on the 1999 sale and lease-back of Olmert's Jerusalem house, which allegedly was done on financial terms very favorable to Olmert, in what would amount to be an illegal campaign contribution and/or bribe. [12]

    Family

Ehud Olmert's wife, Aliza, is a writer of novels and theater plays, as well as an artist. It has been rumored that Aliza was a (founding) member of the Israeli left wing organization Women in Black, but this rumor is unsubstantiated. [13]. Still, Aliza is known to be more left-leaning in her politics than her husband. She claimed to have voted for him for the first time in 2006.

The couple has four biological children and an adopted daughter. The oldest daughter, Michal, holds a Masters in psychology and leads workshops in creative thinking. Their daughter Danna is a lecturer in literature at the Tel Aviv University and the editor of a literature series. She is a self-identified lesbian and lives with her partner in Tel Aviv. Her parents are accepting of her sexual identity and partner. Danna is moderately active in the Jerusalem branch of the Israeli human rights organization Machsom Watch. Their son Shaul married an Israeli artist and lives in New York. After Shaul was through with military service, he signed a petition of the Israeli left-wing organization Yesh G'vul. He later became the spokesman of Beitar Jerusalem FC, his father's favorite football team. This team is often associated with the Israeli right. Ehud's younger son Ariel, who did not serve in the Israeli Army, studies French literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. Shuli is their adopted daughter. She was orphaned from her mother at birth.

Olmert's father Mordechai, considered a pioneer of Israel's land settlement and a former member of the Second and Third Knessets, grew up in the Chinese city of Harbin where he led the local Betar youth movement. Olmert's grandfather, J.J. Olmert settled in Harbin after fleeing post World War-I Russia.[16] In 2004, Ehud Olmert visited China and paid his respects at the tomb of his grandfather in Harbin. Olmert said that his father had never forgotten his Chinese hometown after moving to what was then Palestine, in 1933 at the age of 22. "When he died at the age of 88, he spoke his last words in Chinese," he recalled

Israeli PM offers 'hand of peace'

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says he hopes to revive long-stalled peace efforts with the Palestinians, as a ceasefire takes hold in the Gaza Strip.

In a major policy speech, Mr Olmert pledged humanitarian and economic incentives if militants freed a captive Israeli soldier and violence ceased.

The speech comes against a backdrop of increased international diplomacy.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's aides said talks should resume immediately and unconditionally.

But officials from the militant Hamas party, which won parliamentary elections in January, expressed suspicion about Mr Olmert's statement and demanded an end to military action in the West Bank and Gaza.

Hamas government spokesman Ghazi Hamad called Mr Olmert's statement a "conspiracy" and "a new manoeuvre".

"Mr Olmert is speaking about the Palestinian state without giving details about the borders," Mr Hamad said.

The US has welcomed what it called a "constructive" speech by Mr Olmert.

"I think this, combined with the announcement of a ceasefire, are certainly welcome developments, certainly potentially promising," said state department spokesman Sean McCormack.

Earlier, Israeli troops shot and killed two Palestinians in a raid in the West Bank town of Qabatiya, near Jenin - one a militant and the other a 55-year-old woman.

The official Palestinian news agency said the woman was shot as she went to the aid of an injured militant from the Popular Resistance committees. The Israeli army said she had been trying to recover his gun.

Under the ceasefire which came into force on Sunday, Palestinian militants have agreed to stop rocket attacks on Israel, and Israeli troops withdrew from Gaza.

However, rockets have continued to be fired, the latest attack hitting the Israeli border town of Sderot on Monday afternoon. There were no reports of injuries.

                    Olive branch

Mr Olmert said Palestinians would see substantive improvements in their lives if they chose the path of peace.

"I hold out my hand in peace to our Palestinian neighbours in the hope that it won't be returned empty," Mr Olmert said

Mr Olmert spoke of releasing many long-term Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, lifting restrictions on the occupied territories, dismantling settlements and ultimately creating a viable state.

However, he also warned of the dire consequences if violence continued.

He was speaking at an annual memorial at the grave of Israel's founding premier David Ben-Gurion in the southern Negev desert.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Jerusalem said all Mr Olmert's pledges have been made before, but their importance lies in the context in which they are now being made.

The last four months have seen an upsurge of violence in the Gaza Strip which has killed more than 300 Palestinians, including scores of civilians. Five Israelis have also died.

Israeli troops re-entered Gaza - which they quit more than a year ago in a unilateral withdrawal - after Palestinian militants captured a soldier in a cross-border raid in June.

Mr Olmert won elections in March on a pledge to make further unilateral withdrawals, but credibility in the policy was dashed in a summer of conflict in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

Hamas won election on a platform of not recognising Israel's right to exist. Israel has ruled out political engagement with the Palestinians until Hamas softens its stance.

erusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defence Minister Amir Peretz have agreed to appoint reserve Major-General Gabi Ashkenazi as next chief of staff of the Israel Defence Force (IDF), the premier's bureau announced Monday night.

Ashkenazi, 53, will replace Lieutenant-General Dan Halutz, who resigned last week over criticism of the IDF's performance in the summer's war with Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.

A former deputy chief of staff who quit the army in May 2005, Ashkenai is currently the director-general of the defence ministry. It is not clear when he will take up his new post, which carries the rank of lieutenant-general, as his nomination has to be approved the relevant appointments committee before it is brought to the cabinet for a vote.

Earlier Monday, Israel's movement for quality government petitioned the High Court to delay the appointment of a new chief of staff until a commission of inquiry into the Lebanon war publishes its interim conclusions, slated for next month.

The court ordered Olmert and Peretz to justify within four days their decision to appoint a new chief of staff before the commission's findings are published.

Ashkenazi will take over a military harshly criticised for its performance in the war with Hezbollah, and rocked by the resignation of the flamboyant Halutz, the first air force officer to be appointed IDF chief of staff.

Olmert and Peretz 'expressed confidence in Ashkenazi's abilities to carry out his duties successfully and implement the lessons of the Lebanon war,' the statement from Olmert's office said.

Prior to nominating Ashkenazi, Olmert and Peretz consulted with former premiers and defence ministers, top officials, and former chiefs of staff.

Ashkenazi emerged as the front-runner to succeed the much- criticized Halutz, perhaps because as defence ministry director- general he was not directly involved in the Lebanon fighting.

The two other candidates - current deputy chief of staff Moshe Kaplinksy, and ground forces commander Benny Ganz - were involved in the combat and it is possible the commission of inquiry will criticize their performance.

In the event, Major-General Kaplinksy asked not to be considered for the post, and appointing Major-General Ganz would have meant promoting him over the heads of more senior officers.

Born in a village east of Tel Aviv, Ashkenazi is the first IDF chief of staff to have begun his military career in the Golani infantry brigade, originally the 'poor relation' among IDF units, but since the 1980s gaining a reputation as an elite unit.

He joined the army in 1972 and although he fought in the 1973 October War in the Sinai desert, most of his service has been in the north.

He commanded the Golani, and then an armoured brigade, as well as serving in a variety of staff position.

He was appointed head of the IDF's northern command in 1998, and four years later became the IDF's deputy chief of staff.

He retired from the IDF in May 2005, after he lost the race to become chief of staff to Halutz.

Livni lines up for top job as Olmert falters

By Harry De Quetteville, The Telegraph

An energetic and ambitious former spy who says that "guy issues" have clouded crucial Israeli government decisions is being urged to assume the country's prime ministership as Ehud Olmert's rule appears to be on the brink of collapse.

For Tzipi Livni, her role as vice-prime minister means that in an emergency - such as the sudden illness that snatched the former prime minister, Ariel Sharon, from office last year - the position would automatically be hers.

More likely is that Olmert, Israel's 61-year-old prime minister, who is known for his dedication to jogging, will be forced out by criticism - surrounding his handling of last year's war in Lebanon and a separate corruption scandal.

Pressure on him reached a new intensity last week with the resignation of the chief of the general staff, Lt-Gen Dan Halutz, for the Israeli army's failures against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Since then, Olmert has faced a barrage of calls from politicians on the Left and Right to follow suit. One veteran left-wing MP, Yossi Beilin, demanded that the prime minister step aside specifically to make way for Livni.

Livni is a deeply private 48-year-old mother of two. One of her children is in compulsory military service, while the other is still at school. On the political stage, however, she cuts a composed and stylish figure, without resorting to power dressing. "She is not as aggressive as most of the women politicians I've met,"said Colette Avital, a fellow MP and former diplomat.

Nonetheless, she is not shy of declaring her ambitions to become the country's first female leader since Golda Meir and appears determined not to take over by default. Refusing to rule out a challenge to Olmert, she has been relentlessly burnishing her credentials and insisted recently that she was "qualified to be prime minister''.

A Livni challenge would be enormously popular with supporters of the centrist Kadima party that Olmert still nominally leads. In a recent poll, only eight per cent of Kadima voters wanted him as leader - putting him in humiliating fifth place behind "none of the above'', which scored 12 per cent. Livni topped the poll with 50 per cent.

She is already looking and acting like a leader. While Olmert noted after the summer war in Lebanon that "a prime minister doesn't have to have an agenda, he just has to run a country'', Livni has been actively drawing up plans for the future of Israel's most crucial policies.

She has come up with her own ideas for establishing peace with the Palestinians, adapting the US-backed "road map for peace"to try to free it from stagnation.

Her frequent trips to America have helped raise her profile. As foreign minister leading Israel's rallying cry against the nuclear ambitions of Iran, she has effectively become her country's most prominent figure on the international stage. When the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported last week that secret peace talks had been under way for two years between Israel and Syria, she was named as an instigator.

                              Covert diplomacy

Such covert diplomacy would come naturally to Livni, who worked for Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence service, for four years in the 1980s, before becoming a lawyer.

She was first elected to the Knesset as a member for the right-wing Likud party only eight years ago, but since then, with astute politicking, her rise has been assured.

Her most powerful ally was Ariel Sharon, for whom she helped broker the controversial Jewish pullout of the Palestinian Gaza Strip with his internal Likud party critics.

When Sharon left Likud to form Kadima, Livni went with him, becoming the party's number three. When Sharon was plunged into a coma by a stroke in January last year, she rallied behind Ehud Olmert and became number two. Now she appears to be aiming higher still.

"There is no question that she's ambitious for the top job," said Yael Yishai, a professor of political science who specialises in the role of women in Israeli politics. "She's very capable, very talented, very shrewd and knows what she wants.''

But Prof Yishai predicted that Livni would face serious obstacles. "Israeli politics is very tribal and you need military and social connections, which she doesn't have and can't make at her age. She's a bit of a loner,"she said.

Livni has revealed that she has had to struggle against the boys' club atmosphere at the top levels of Israeli decision-making.

"Sometimes there are guy issues," she said in a recent interview. Asked if there had been a "guy problem" in the conduct of the Lebanon war, she replied: "Not only in the war. In all kinds of discussions, I hear arguments between generals and admirals and such and I say, 'Guys, stop it'.''
