Alain GRESH

                  Stop sympathizing with radical Islam

TO fight the war on terror, you must identify your enemy/enemies conclusively, search for them vigorously and destroy them completely. No compromises, no concessions and no relaxing when the nation's security and world peace are at stake.
I read five letters last week in The Daily Review, all oblivious to the global activities of terrorists, unbelievably compassionate to the enemies, and shockingly indifferent to the killings and destruction by a host of Jihadi terrorists.

John Brown ("Draw up a list," Letters, July 16) started it, and he was rightly disgusted with Jihadi terrorists killing other innocent people, and attacking and destroying temples, synagogues and churches regularly. However, Audrey De Coursey, David Siegel, Yusuf Chao, Mai El Sadany and Vinaye Misra are not bothered about the victims; they seem to be sympathetic to the terrorists.

The so-called Muslim allies of the U.S. have not done anything for the U.S. Don't blame Bush policies, as he wasn't the president when the USS Cole and U.S. embassies were attacked in Africa and the World Trade Center in 1993. The planning for 9/11 attacks was done way before Bush came to power.

Most terror activities are carried on in the name of Islam, Allah and the "pure people." So don't assert that Islam and terrorist activities have no connection. Know about ongoing "ethnic cleansing" of Christians, Jews and Hindus from Islamic countries and Muslim-dominated areas? Sadly, no tears are shed for them,

no voices raised. Madrassas (Islamic schools) don't churn out scientists, doctors, engineers, peace activists, economists and litterateurs but only hard-line clerics, hate-spreading militants and terrorists.
John Brown had suggested bombing Muslim holy sites just as a warning and as a deterrent, and he gets brickbats. His critics did not bother about "actual attacks" on other people's religious places and killings of the innocent devotees there. Recently there was a grenade attack on Hindu pilgrims to Amarnath, a holy place in Kashmir, resulting in death and injuries. These violent acts have become routine, with no preventive or punitive action. We don't empathize with the victims; we care more about the criminals.

Even The Daily Review gave half a page to propaganda for Hamas by their own man ("To understand conflict, understand Hamas," Viewpoint, July 15). Hamas is a terrorist organization, labeled as such not by George Bush, but by a Democratic president — Bill Clinton — long ago. The European Union also has done that, yet the newspaper provided a free forum for propagation and defense of Hamas. This is unfair.

Stop defending radical Islam and Jihadi militancy, and don't comfort the enemy. Join the war on terror wholeheartedly, identify the enemies of the U.S., of peace and humanity, and finish them once and for all.

MADRID (Reuters) - Islamist extremists were planning attacks across Europe, especially against public transport, before their arrests in Barcelona last weekend, a Spanish paper reported on Saturday, citing a would-be attacker's testimony.

The Al Qaeda-inspired cell planned to attack the Barcelona metro and other targets in Spain, Germany, France, Portugal and the United Kingdom, said the bomber turned police informant.

In testimony that led to the arrest of 14 South Asians last Saturday, the informant told police the group had a preference for attacks on public transport, especially metro systems, El Pais newspaper reported.

"If we attack the metro, the emergency services can't get there," the informant said he was told by a fellow suicide bomber, El Pais reported.

Two pairs with explosive-filled bags were to enter separate Barcelona subway stations and other members of the group were to detonate their bombs by remote control, said the witness.

On Friday, Spain's government said the Barcelona cell was preparing to carry out the metro attack either last weekend or in the following 15 days.

Two other pairs of suicide bombers had been assigned targets elsewhere in Spain, another was to attack Germany, three were given objectives in France and two more were to strike Portugal.

The informant said the Barcelona cell had six suicide bombers and other members responsible for preparing explosives and planning attacks in other European states. Four of those arrested have since been released due to lack of evidence.

Al Qaeda was to take responsibility for the Barcelona attacks through Baitullah Mehsud, a Taliban commander the Pakistani government says was behind the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, El Pais said.

"Only the leadership of the organization knows what requests the emir (Baitullah) will make after the first attack, but if they are not carried out, there will be a second attack, a third in Spain. And next Germany, France, Portugal, United Kingdom," the head of the cell told the police informer, El Pais reported.

The Barcelona bombings could have taken place less than two months before Spain's March 9 general election.

Islamic militants attacked Madrid commuter trains days before Spain's last general election in March 2004, killing 191 people and wounding 1,800. They said the attacks were made in revenge for Spain sending troops to Afghanistan and Iraq.

The American presidential election campaign took a bizarre theological turn recently when Barack Obama accused John McCain of not being able to distinguish Sunnis from Shiites.

The exchange started when Sen. McCain suggested that the Islamic Republic in Iran, a Shiite power, may be helping al Qaeda, a Sunni outfit, in its murderous campaign in Iraq and elsewhere. Basing its position on received wisdom, the Obama camp implied that Sunnis and Shiites, divided as they are by deep doctrinal differences, could not come together to fight the United States and its allies.

The truth is that Sunni and Shiite extremists have always been united in their hatred of the U.S., and in their desire to "bring it to destruction," in the words of Taliban leader Mullah Muhammad Omar.

The majority of Muslims does not share that hatred and have no particular problem with the U.S. It is the country most visited by Muslim tourists and it attracts the largest number of Muslim students studying abroad.

But to understand the problem with extremists, it is important to set aside the Sunni-Shiite divide and focus on their common hatred of America. Theology is useless here. What we are dealing with is politics.

For Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini, the slogan "Death to America" was as important as the traditional device of Islam "Allah Is The Greatest" – hence his insistence that it be chanted at all public meetings and repeated after each session of the daily prayers. And to that end, Khomeinists have worked with anyone, including brother-enemy Sunnis or even Marxist atheists.

The suicide attacks that claimed the lives of over 300 Americans, including 241 Marines, in Lebanon in 1983, were joint operations of the Khomeinist Hezbollah and the Marxist Arab Socialist Party, which was linked to the Syrian intelligence services. The Syrian regime is Iran's closest ally, despite the fact that Iranian mullahs regard the Alawite minority that dominates it as heretics or worse. Today in Lebanon, Tehran's surrogate, Hezbollah, is in league with a Maronite Christian faction, led by ex-Gen. Michel Aoun, in opposition to a majority bloc that favors close ties with the U.S.

For more than a quarter century, Tehran has been host to the offices of more than three dozen terrorists organizations, from the Colombian FARC to the Palestinian Hamas and passing by half a dozen Trotskyite and Leninist outfits. It also finances many anti-American groups and parties of both extreme right and extreme left in Europe and the Americas. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has bestowed the Muslim title of "brother" on Cuba's Fidel Castro, Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, Bolivia's Evo Morales and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega. Communist North Korea is the only country with which the Islamic Republic maintains close military-industrial ties and holds joint annual staff sessions.

George Ibrahim Abdallah, the Lebanese maverick who led a campaign of terror in Paris in the 1980s on behalf of Tehran, was a Christian. So was Anis Naqqache, who led several hit-teams sent to kill Iranian exile opposition leaders. For years, and until a recent change of policy, Tehran financed and offered shelter to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Marxist movement fighting to overthrow the Turkish Republic. Why? Tehran's displeasure with Turkish membership of NATO and friendship with the U.S.

Yes, Mr. Obama might ask, but what about Sunni-Shiite cooperation?

The Islamic Republic has financed and armed the Afghan Sunni Hizb Islami (Islamic Party) since the 1990s. It's also financed the Front for Islamic Salvation (FIS), a Sunni political-terrorist outfit in Algeria between 1992 and 2005.

In 1993, a senior Iranian delegation, led by the then Islamic Parliament Speaker Ayatollah Mehdi Karrubi, attended the Arab-Muslim Popular Congress organized by Hassan al-Turabi, nicknamed "The Pope of Islamist Terror," in Khartoum. At the end of this anti-American jamboree a nine-man "Coordinating Committee" was announced. Karrubi was a member, along with such Sunni eminences as Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mr. Turabi and the Algerian Abdallah Jaballah. The fact that Karrubi was a Shiite mullah did not prevent him from sitting alongside Sunni sheikhs.

In 1996, a suicide attack claimed the lives of 19 American servicemen in Al Khobar, eastern Saudi Arabia. The operation was carried out by the Hezbollah in Hejaz, an Iranian-financed outfit, with the help of the Sunni militant group "Sword of the Peninsula."

In 2000, Sunni groups linked to al Qaeda killed 17 U.S. servicemen in a suicide attack on USS Cole off the coast of Yemen. This time, a Shiite militant group led by Sheikh al-Houti, Tehran's man in Yemen, played second fiddle in the operation.

In Central Asia's Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Tehran has for years supported two Sunni movements, the Rastakhiz Islami (Islamic Awakening) and Hizb Tahrir Islami (Islamic Liberation Party). In Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, Tehran supports the Sunni Taleshi groups against the Azeri Shiite majority. The reason? The Taleshi Sunnis are pro-Russian and anti-American, while the Shiite Azeris are pro-American and anti-Russian.

There are no Palestinian Shiites, yet Tehran has become the principal source of funding for radical Palestinian Sunni groups, notably Hamas, Islamic Jihad and half a dozen leftist-atheist minigroups. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh refuses to pray alongside his Iranian hosts during his visits to Tehran. But when it comes to joining Khomeinist crowds in shouting "Death to America" he is in the forefront.

With Arab oil kingdoms no longer as generous as before, Iran has emerged as the chief source of funding for Hamas. The new Iranian budget, coming into effect on March 21, allocates over $2 billion to the promotion of "revolutionary causes." Much of the money will go to Hamas and the Lebanese branch of Hezbollah.

In Pakistan, the Iran-financed Shiite Tehrik Jaafari joined a coalition of Sunni parties to govern the Northwest Frontier Province, until they all suffered a crushing defeat at last month's parliamentary elections.

The fact that the Sunnis and Shiites in other provinces of Pakistan continued to kill each other did not prevent them from developing a joint, anti-U.S. strategy that included the revival of the Afghan Taliban and protection for the remnants of al Qaeda. Almost all self-styled "holy warriors" who go to Iraq on a mission of murder and mayhem are Sunnis. And, yet most pass through Syria, a country that, as already noted, is dominated by a sect with a militant anti-Sunni religious doctrine.

Next month, Tehran will host what is billed as "The Islamic Convergence Conference," bringing together hundreds of Shiite and Sunni militants from all over the world. The man in charge, Ayatollah Ali-Muhammad Taskhiri, has described the goal of the gathering to be delivering "a punch in the face of the American Great Satan."

Still, Mr. Obama might ask: what about al Qaeda and Iran?

The 9/11 Commission report states that Tehran was in contact with al Qaeda at various levels before the 2001 attacks. Tehran has admitted the presence of al Qaeda figures in Iran on a number of occasions, and has arranged for the repatriation of at least 13 Saudi members in the past five years. The Bin Laden family tells us that at least one of Osama's sons, Sa'ad, has lived in Iran since 2002.

Reports from Iran claim that scores of Taliban leaders and several al Qaeda figures spend part of the year in a compound-style housing estate near the village of Dost Muhammad on the Iranian frontier with Afghanistan. One way to verify these claims is to allow the world media access to the area. But Tehran has declared large segments of eastern Iran a "no-go" area, even for its own state-owned media.

In short, the claim that al Qaeda and the Khomeinists, not to mention other terrorist groups operating in the name of Islam, would not work together simply because they have theological differences is both naive and dangerous.

Messrs. McCain and Obama do not need to know about doctrinal differences between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. The problem they face is not theological but political. All they need to know is that there are deadly and determined groups dedicated to destruction of the U.S. in the name of a perverted version of Islam, and that they need to be resisted, fought and ultimately defeated.

Reformed Muslim radical fears future in Britain

British-born Muslim Hassan Butt spent 10 years inside radical Islamist groups, recruiting and training militants, before renouncing violence and trying to help others escape radical Islamist networks.

It is a past he is not proud of, but which he also does not seek to hide when he discusses his experiences.

"I was involved in the whole world of radical Islam from the age of 16 onwards. For 10 years it was my family," Butt told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday, seeking to explain how he became enveloped in a world of "religious hatred".

"I financed terrorism, I recruited people to go to terrorist training camps, I myself have been to terrorist training camps," he said, mentioning Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he spent two years after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

But nearly three years ago, Butt began questioning his beliefs and the direction he was taking, and after four British Muslims blew themselves up in London in July 2005, killing 52 people, he began to turn his back on militancy.

But it has not been a simple transition.

"My life was easier being a terrorist than it is now that I am no longer a terrorist," he said, speaking by phone from his home in Manchester, northern England.

"It's not easy being hunted by jihadis who want to kill you, moderate Muslims who think you have betrayed Islam, and the Manchester police who might want to prosecute me."
A court ruled last week that the Manchester police could seize notes and documents from a journalist, Shiv Malik, who is writing a book about jihadi networks that draws on Butt's knowledge and experiences.

Manchester police would not confirm Butt was a target, saying only that Malik's notes were wanted as part of an ongoing investigation. "It would be inappropriate to discuss the detail at this stage," a spokeswoman said.

                          "MILITANT OUTREACH"

Since he turned his back on extremism, Butt has become a touchstone for young Muslims looking to escape militant groups.

He has met the government's counter-terrorism minister to discuss "outreach" to hardened British Islamists -- estimated to number at least 2,000 -- and taken his ideas into prisons and mosques, where much of the radicalisation is said to go on.

Butt says he has helped 15 young men in Manchester alone extract themselves from their extremist ideology, potentially thwarting attacks.

"Of the 15, 11 had been sent for terrorist training. I know because I personally sent these guys to camps," he says.

With more support and funding, he is convinced he could establish outreach countrywide.

"With everything else in Britain -- gangs, drugs, domestic violence -- there's an outreach programme. But when it comes to Islamic radicalism, there is no credible programme because no one has any idea how to run one properly," he says.

Butt has been arrested several times under Britain's anti-terrorism laws, but released each time due to lack of evidence.

Opposition politicians have called for Butt to be arrested and face charges for what he has admitted to -- running training camps and radicalising young men.

Butt says he is willing to serve time for his crimes, if convicted even if that means spending years in prison.

But he also has a warning for those who might be eager to see him behind bars.

"I'm saying, put me in prison, that's fine, but think of the damage you are going to do to the effort to deradicalise extremist Islam in this country."

Whilst strongly opposing the proposed extension in 42 days detention on terrorism charges, Muslim community is confronted with one of its own self -denial whether 'radicalisation' exist and or on the increase in the Muslim Youth in Great Britain. I would try to highlight some of the contributory factors which are relevant to initiate a debate and or to organise a process to curb such extremism. Newspapers in press and electronic media have left no stone unturned to project Abu Hamza and Omar Bakri as the spokesman of the Muslim community in the last decade whereas the good of community were never projected in the same tone. The work of organisations, net work of mosques and activities of Muslims in general are peaceful and law abiding in an atmosphere where they feel vulnerable in general due to first 9/11 and then 7/7 tragic incidents. Trail of terrorism related legislation and finally Government's untimely discussion over 'Hijab', bearded Muslims and forced marriages deprived the opportunity to strengthen the links between ancient civilisations and put emphasis on tolerance and curbing militancy jointly. Whilst Govt. is allowing media for selective negative publicity of this minority whilst other groups are carrying on their work to fuel the fire and recruit young minds towards radical and Islamist activities, though regrettable but a real threat to de harmonise the bilateral community relations. This cornering strategy has portrayed Muslims as a victim in the Great Britain and they lost the drive of self-accountability as it was impossible to fight on two fronts. Radicalisation is at increase and yes, Young Muslims aged 16-24 are the prime targets of the radical groups who used annoyance, attitude and their loneliness as an excuse to incite them towards 'revenge.' What are the causes of youth falling prey to such outfits is multiple in number and dimensions and we analyse one by one the core reasons: a) Communication gap: There is a generation gap between dual nationals came in 70's for economic betterment whose only lust was to make economic betterment in their life style abroad and to make their future here and return in good time. Their children do not have such baggage and their priorities have changed from economic betterment to compete with locals, professionalism, and integration in English culture. This led to individual development other than that of a group. This communication gap and change of goal post in families have caused the biggest rift while living under the same roof, parents sometimes are clueless about the likes and dislikes of their children and children culturally bound are scared to tell the truth. This situation in a few lead to a situation where forced marriages take place too where consent is missing. Language has also played a big barrier in expressing their views rightly, first generation sticking to their mother tongue whereas British youth preferred to speak English, watch football and hang around with their age group. If those young minds are lonely, feel betrayed or have a tragic episode in their lives and they are disillusioned, they have a potential to fall a prey to gang masters or outfits breeding religious lawlessness. b) Lack of community support: Muslim youth do not have any support network where whilst holding their ideas, and belief they could interact with other age fellows and parents at a network which is sound, fool proof and thoroughly supervised by elders of the community. Mosques could have provided that platform but they are themselves enslaved of their sectarian compulsions and religious order thus community network on ethnic or nationality basis was the only alternative which is mainly preoccupied by pensioners who are unwilling to retire unnecessarily. Thus Muslim youth remain voiceless, without a platform and without guidance and clear objectives. Funding too could be the real reason of the lack of such infrastructure, but to me political will seems more of the cause. c) Lack of governmental support: The main important aspect of young minds to feel neglected is that despite having degrees they are jobless. If they are on the streets they are stopped more, and they are not that obedient as were their predecessors. They know their rights, which are not given easily. Their negative activities are projected more and there is no fund to accommodate young Brits on a forum or a platform where they could express themselves. Young children have NSPCA for protection from cruelty, birds and animals have RSPCA to ensure their welfare but Muslim youth has none, and nowhere to go. Some of the organisations working already in the field need cloned participants and are granted conditional funding which does not help either, as if you do not follow their do's and don'ts you may not be able to seek membership successfully. I think if Muslims and Pakistani youth is administered as the Jewish community or Indian doctors community or Black African communities have done by their own general public the results would be fantastic, or alternately govt spend some money to provide national outsourcing, a platform where these people can rightly participate as a community. Govt need to support the youth to walk on their feet before they could run on their own. d) Foreign Policy reasons: Wars in Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan are true foreign policy considerations which has forced the young minds to feel neglected at home. Commenting on George Bush's policies is the hobby of Asian or Muslim youth only because of their own treatment, unemployment, lack of preference in jobs in Civil service, judiciary, police force, armed forces and or Parliament at home. Deprivation of young educated minds in the early days of their careers are trapped In red tape policies are devastating and very ambiguous approach of govt on their foreign policy decisions is causing the mayhem. That is the very key which is exploited by outfits at places where such commodity is heavy in number(s) such as outside mosques with leaflets, universities, local deprived areas, crime hubs and playgrounds and they are working freely in UK in disguise, they first speak to youth and then invite them to their gigs and initiate from leafleting to a trap which lead the young minds to their own battlefield. From experience as a lawyer interacting with British youth I an regrettably of the opinion that young British Muslims who are studying in their early university days, or unemployed after graduating or living in deprived areas without hope for future are vulnerable and all because of lack of community net work, parental neglect and lack of Governmental support. Muslim youth suffers due to lonely lifestyle and cultural and religious compulsions which force them to get attracted to the people in masks who in the name of religion teach the kids something which are not in the holy Quran and of which parents have no knowledge of it. 'Death of a man is a death of a mankind' is a true version of humanity as per the holy Quran, therefore responsibility is greater to save the coming generations from underlying increasing problem before it's too late.

Four Muslim men suspected of a plot to blow up two New York synagogues and shoot down military planes were ordered to remain in jail on Thursday in what police called homegrown terrorism.

The case has shaken a wealthy neighborhood of New York City's Bronx borough where police said the men, who had been watched for nearly a year in a sting operation, planted what they thought were bombs in cars parked outside each synagogue.

The suspects then intended to shoot down planes with guided surface-to-air missiles, but the explosives and the missiles, which had been sold to the accused plotters by an FBI informant, were deactivated, police said.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Smith ordered James Cromitie, 55, to remain in jail along with David Williams, 28, Onta Williams, 32, and Haitian citizen Laguerre Payen, 27.

"These are extremely violent men. They pose an extreme risk of danger to the community," prosecutor Eric Snyder told the court. "These people were eager to bring death to Jews."

Defense lawyer Marilyn Reader told the court that her client, Payen, who appeared in court separately from the other men and with a bandage on his head, suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and could not read or write in English.

Police said the suspects had criminal records and may have converted to a radical version of Islam while in prison. They had no known links to al Qaeda, police said.

"I'm worried about the potential backlash to the Muslim community," said Aliya Latif, civil rights director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations in New York.

"Questioning the loyalty of law-abiding American-Muslims is fodder for anti-U.S. forces erroneously coupling religion and terror," she said after a news conference.

It was the latest security case to rattle the United States since the hijacked plane attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.

Authorities said Cromitie was the leader of the group and he chose synagogues after having said: "The best target (the World Trade Center) was hit already."

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said of the case: "It speaks to our concern about homegrown terrorism ... that in many ways is the most difficult to address."

                                'THEY WANTED TO COMMIT JIHAD'

The FBI and New York police arrested the men on Wednesday night after they planted 37 pounds (17 kg) of inert C-4 explosives in each of two cars parked outside each synagogue.

From there they had planned to travel about 60 miles upstate to an Air National Guard base at Stewart airport in their hometown of Newburgh to shoot down planes with the deactivated stinger missile.
"They stated that they wanted to commit jihad," Kelly told reporters, using a term that can mean holy war. "They were disturbed about what was happening in Afghanistan and Pakistan, that Muslims were being killed. They made the statement that if Jews were killed in this attack that would be all right."

Each was charged with one count of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the United States, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, and one count of conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles, which also carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Worshipers at the Riverdale Jewish Center, an orthodox synagogue that was one of the targets of the suspected plot, were shocked.

"It's just unbelievable, unbelievable, that it's here in this community," said Rose Spindler, who said she was a Holocaust survivor. "They should let us live. How can they come here and do that to innocent people? We were very lucky."
