Jaguar pins revival hope on new models

Troubled British car maker Jaguar has unveiled its sportiest car for years, along with its most expensive saloon car yet, in an ambitious push to recover both financially and in terms of sales.

The Jaguar XK sportscar is a follow-up of the XK8 that was launched to much acclaim a decade ago.

As such, it is dramatically different from, and considerably sportier than, the rest of its current range which includes the S-type saloon - which competes against the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-class; and the XJ - a top-of-the-range executive cruiser.

Its second launch in Frankfurt is an even more luxurious version of the XJ which carries its premier Daimler badge.

              Profit predictions

Jaguar's sales have recently slipped to fresh lows of around 100 cars a year. Earlier this year the group closed its Brown's Lane plant in Coventry.

Until we see a strong recovery in the Germany economy, I think Europe is going to be a challenging place to do business

              Lewis Booth, Ford Europe chief

It is clear that Jaguar remains the weakest link within the Ford luxury subsidiary, although the company is loathe to reveal much about the state of its finances.

"We are not going to put a date on when Jaguar will return to profitability," said Mark Fields, head of Ford's Premier Automotive Group (PAG), which controls Jaguar as well as Volvo, Aston Martin and Ford.

                  Renault eye constructors' crown

Renault motorsport president Patrick Faure wants to add the constructors' title to Fernando Alonso's drivers' crown to cement their F1 dominance.

Renault trail McLaren by two points in the standings with two Grand Prix left.

"If we can add the constructors' title to the drivers' it really means that you have dominated the season, that you are really the best," Faure said.

"If we win both at this time it will mean we (Renault) have won everything in motor racing."

Alonso's success gave Renault their first world title as a stand-alone team, having supplied engines to the likes of Benetton and Williams during their title-winning days.

The company has also won the Le Mans 24-hour race and the World Rally Championship.

But Faure believes they will need to continue winning races to confirm their arrival as one of Formula One's major players.

"We will probably have to try to win many other ones to prove that it was not by chance that we won this year," he added.

Faure hailed Alonso as an "exceptional talent" but pointed to Flavio Briatore as a key part of this year's success.

Faure picked Briatore as the man to lead Renault's return to Formula One in 2000 when they bought Benetton and he feels that decision has been more than vindicated.

"Flavio is completely uncommon as the head of a Formula One team," Faure added.

"He is the kind of man who is fantastically able to put things together.

"He has a very special management system and he has a way of selecting people, organising the job and looking after the results all the time.

"He is very good at controlling things. Sometimes in special businesses like this one you need special people."

Spain made to wait to greet Alonso as champion

SPAIN was hailing its new national hero yesterday. Unfortunately, he has no intentions of going home to see the people who have elevated him to the status of a sporting god. At least not yet.
Fernando Alonso left a curious void at the heart of sporting Spain yesterday when he decided that his next port of call after winning the Formula One World Championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix would be Oxford, his adopted home, and not Oviedo in Asturia, his birthplace.

There will be no open-top bus rides and no royal receptions, although one of the first calls to his mobile phone after the race on Sunday was from King Juan Carlos — one of 300 calls that blitzed the airwaves over South America as well-wishers tried to contact the new champion. But they were precisely the calls that Alonso seemed reluctant to take.

He has spoken several times about how he had to leave Spain to find his way into Formula One by travelling to Britain as an 18-year-old and clearly some bitterness and caution remain in his mind. When asked about holding a celebration in Spain, Alonso replied enigmatically: “I would like to thank all my fans and everyone in Spain, but I am not returning to Spain just now because there are too many political interests that want to get involved.”

Alonso is a one-man sporting phenomenon at home, a sort of Andrew Flintoff, David Beckham and Tim Henman wrapped into one package.

Singlehandedly, he has transformed Formula One from a cult following to one that rivals football; the television audience for viewers who witnessed his coronation as champion on Sunday was thought to be more than ten million — double the figures even for the celebrated matches involving Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Streets throughout the nation are adorned with billboards featuring Alonso’s square-jawed face, merchandising sales are thriving and Oviedo is enjoying a tourist boom. But Oviedo will have to wait until the end of next month to see its favourite son when he accepts the Principe de Asturias prize, one of Spain’s top awards, in the city.

For Alonso’s heart is elsewhere now. There were celebrations in São Paulo after the Brazilian Grand Prix, but, typically, only his Renault engineers and mechanics and his beloved father, José Luis, were invited. Even Flavio Briatore, his team principal, chose to travel back to London, first to talk to the 400 workers at Renault’s factory at Enstone, near Oxford, before flying to Renault’s engine plant in France.

The entire episode was an illustration of how Renault’s strong bond as a team has played a substantial part in helping Alonso to become Formula One’s youngest world champion — and when they celebrate, they celebrate together. Not even Spain was invited to this world champion’s party.

                      Porsche wants 20% Volkswagen deal

German luxury carmaker Porsche has said it will buy a 20% stake in Volkswagen to prevent any hostile takeovers that could threaten their business links.

Porsche owns about 5% of Europe's biggest carmaker and boosting its stake is set to cost more than $3bn (£1.7bn).

Shares in Porsche fell 10% in Monday trading in Frankfurt. VW shares also declined, but only by 0.6%.

Porsche developed its 4X4 Cayenne vehicle with VW, and the firms are working together on a hybrid motor.

The links between the companies go back a long way and Volkswagen's current chairman Ferdinand Piech is the grandson of Porsche founder Dr Ferdinand Porsche.

Dr Porsche helped develop VW's massive-selling Beetle car.

A dull race but a great day

McLaren scored a long-awaited 1-2 result in Brazil - the team's first in five years - but that was not the real story of the Brazilian Grand Prix because the achievement of race winner Juan Pablo Montoya and title contender Kimi Raikkonen was eclipsed by Fernando Alonso's World Championship. And the way in which Fernando and Kimi hailed one another after what was a rather dull race.

This year may be remembered as the year in which Fernando Alonso won his first World Championship but in truth it belongs to both men. The score at the moment is six wins apiece and Raikkonen will be trying hard to end the year with more wins than the World Champion but Alonso has also made it clear that now the gloves are off and he is going to race actively rather than gathering up points in a disciplined fashion. The problem he has is that the McLaren is still the car to have.

On this occasion Montoya used it best and made no mistakes and so victory was his but the feel good factor at Interlagos on Sunday night came from the two men who shared the podium.

"Of course it is disappointing not to be fighting for the championship any more," said the Finn, "but we realised there were not that many races to go and we needed to have really good luck to win it, so it is not really so disappointing. Congratulations to Fernando he definitely deserved it."

                        Fernando responded.

"It was fantastic for me and for him, the competition. I think thanks to Kimi this world title is much better for me because Michael Schumacher had some problems with the Ferrari this year and to beat the McLarens and especially Kimi this year was extremely difficult. As we saw in the last part of the championship, it's impossible to win one race when they have no problems so to beat Kimi this year is probably more than Michael in the last couple of years."

The remarks were heartfelt and genuine and that was nice to see. There was no show business in the 2005 World Championship. The nicest thing was the way in which Alonso put his own mark on the title. The 24-year-old Spaniard beat a record set 33 years ago by Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi. It is a great achievement and the thing that stood out was that Fernando was utterly composed and, while obviously emotional, chose his words with the wisdom of a man many years his senior. He did it his way. There were no platitudes.

"I came from a country with no traditions in Formula 1 and, you know, I fought alone, basically, because I had no help from anyone for all of my career. I arrived in Formula 1 thanks to the results in my previous categories and thanks to my sponsors and now I think this title is the maximum I can achieve in my life, in my career, and it is thanks to three or four people, no more than that.

"I don't care about the people that don't like me. It's normal in sport; sometimes you support one driver, sometimes the other one. It's the same to me. I always try to do my job, try to always tell the truth to everyone and sometimes in Formula 1 this is quite hard because we don't tell the truth maybe 50% of the time but I do, and sometimes people don't like what I say."

In the race, Alonso took the lead at the start but could not hold it, even if his Renault was a lot lighter than the McLarens. As things turned out the Renault had nine laps less fuel than Raikkonen and six less than Montoya. In the light of that Renault's great leap forward in qualifying did not seem quite as impressive as it did on Saturday night. But that was not the point. Alonso was still strong enough to stay ahead of the rest and that was all that mattered. Fisichella did not look strong at all and while one can blame some of that on the driver, the car must also take some of the blame.

The fight between the two McLarens was decided early on because in the early laps Raikkonen was pinned in behind Alonso. It was lap 23 before he took second place and by then Montoya was seven seconds ahead up the road. Kimi closed that to 1.4secs by staying out three laps longer but Montoya remained ahead and with more fuel onboard in the second stint, Kimi dropped to almost five seconds behind. But he then stayed out five laps longer and so almost got out ahead of the Colombian. With Alonso third it really did not matter and, with McLaren keen to get a 1-2 after the recent near misses, the two men cruised for home. They ended the day 22secs ahead of Alonso but the gap would have been bigger if they had been pushing.
