US accepts threat to polar bears


The US has proposed listing polar bears as a threatened species because of declining Arctic ice levels.

It is the first time the US has made a direct link between global warming and the threat to a species.

President George W Bush has steadfastly refused to back mandatory controls of emissions of carbon dioxide - believed the main gas behind global warming.

There are 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears across the globe, about 4,700 of them in the US state of Alaska.

US Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne said polar bears were "one of nature's ultimate survivors".

But he added: "We are concerned the polar bears' habitat may literally be melting."

Being listed as "threatened" is a rung down from being "endangered".

A department official told the AFP news agency the US had not had a species that had been "listed with such a close correlation to climate change as this one".

Mr Kempthorne sidestepped questions about US reductions of gas emissions, saying it was not a question for his department.

But he stressed offshore oil and gas developments in Alaska were not part of the risk.

Lobby groups welcomed the proposal. Kassie Siegel, of the Centre for Biological Diversity, said it was "a watershed decision in the way this country deals with climate change".

However, listing the bears as threatened is still a year away, pending further studies.

The listing would require all federal agencies not to take decisions that would threaten polar bears' survival.

The Swiss-based Polar Bear Specialist Group projects a 30% decline in numbers over the next 45 years.

i heard somthing intresting about global warming that 70 percent of things that indicate global warming happened between 1870 to 1940
that is well befor the insane hyper human consumption/ desecration of the planet

also some scintist say the suns raidiant fluctuates every 1500 years or somthing and that even befor we had melting of ice caps and than a recreation of it

Mike, what joubin is saying is the pictures of the Ozone layers all indicate global warming is pretty recent. Mike, you need to stop being so defensive, when someone disagrees with you its not because they are prejudiced against you. You dont have to agree with anyone, and noone has to agree with you. We are all here to learn from eachother, to exchange ideas, and to become more flexible in hearing about the other side of issues.

Look at the weather this year: its totally out of wack. We have had very cold temperatures in California, something we are not used to. And why is this? Global warming is playing a direct part in all of the weather fluctuations all over the world.

Your sharing what you heard is very informative. Global warming is something that has been caused by years of abuse to the planet we call home. It started with the industrial revolution (maybe even before that), and its not about to stop anytime soon. The sad part is unless people realize what is going on, animals like the poor polar bear will be extinct and our children wont even be able to see a real live polar bear, they will end up having to look at pictures of an extinct animal in textbooks.
