Celtic manager Gordon Strachan was pleased to reach the Champions League last 16 for the second successive season but was upset with his side's performance.

Celtic lost 1-0 at Group D winners AC Milan on Tuesday but still qualified after Shakhtar Donetsk, who needed a victory, were beaten 2-1 at home by Benfica.

"You probably don't want my thoughts on the game so I'll go on to one of the most enjoyable parts -- the fact we are through," Strachan jokingly told a news conference.

"We'll go back to the hotel and enjoy it but we must do better away from home. There are one or two negatives I'm desperate to sort out."

Celtic have an awful away record in the Champions League, losing 15 of 16 matches and drawing just once.

The Scottish champions barely threatened at San Siro and when Filippo Inzaghi scored midway through the second half, Strachan quickly tried to find out the Shakhtar score.

"I was OK until Milan scored then I started looking around for a bit of help and I got a thumbs up," he said. "I thought the game was dead, that's why I was annoyed to concede a goal."

Former Manchester United midfielder Strachan would rather avoid English clubs in the first knockout round in February.

"For me personally, I've spent a lot of time in England. I want new arenas to play in," he added. "I think the next level would be to be a force away from home in Europe. We are a force at home."

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was happy to win at home for the third time in Group D, in stark contrast to Serie A where they have yet to win at San Siro this season. Finishing top of the group was also important for the holders, he said.

"It depends on the draw and the team we meet but it is important to have the second leg at San Siro," he added.

The last round of matches in Group D was brought forward by a week because Milan now travel to the Club World Cup in Japan.

"We have nine days to recover," Ancelotti said looking ahead to the tournament, where injured Brazilian striker Ronaldo hopes to feature. "We might have Ronaldo back."

Two places remain up for grabs in the knockout stage of the Champions League and four teams will be chasing them on the final night of group action on Wednesday.

Two of them go head to head in Group E where Rangers take on Olympique Lyon in Glasgow with the Scottish side needing only a draw to go through behind group winners Barcelona.


Lyon, regulars in the last 16 in recent years and seeking a seventh successive French league title, have recovered well after losing their first two games but face a stiff task.

Rangers are nice and fresh after not playing at the weekend, have not lost in their last 14 home games in Europe and are full of confidence on the back of their stunning 3-0 win in Lyon.

The French side rested several first-choice players in a 1-0 defeat at Caen on Saturday but captain Juninho, who started on the bench, said the result was irrelevant.

"Even if we had won 10-0, it wouldn't have changed anything," he said. "We have to respect Rangers because they beat us 3-0 at home and not many teams have done that.

"We also know they're a tough side and can rely on the best fans in the world. If we manage to resist during the first 20 minutes, our chances will come."

Not that they need any extra motivation but the fact that rivals Celtic have already qualified will certainly give the fans some extra voice in the club's 50th Champions League match.

Things are not so clear cut in Group G where Fenerbahce and PSV Eindhoven are vying to join Inter Milan in the last 16.

The Turkish side, one point ahead of the Dutch, are at home to eliminated CSKA Moscow and a win will send them through.

Fenerbahce have a better head-to-head record than PSV so even if they lose to CSKA, Eindhoven would have to beat Inter to get above them.

The other groups in action on Wednesday are already settled. Manchester United and AS Roma, who meet in Italy, are already through from Group F while Sevilla, who visit Slavia Prague, and Arsenal, at home to Steaua Bucharest, are just wrestling for top spot in Group G.

Liverpool capped a strong comeback with a 4-0 victory over Olympique Marseille on Tuesday night and advanced to the second round of the European Champions League along with Real Madrid, Porto, Schalke and Olympiakos.

Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel scored in Liverpool's victory at Marseille.

Liverpool, the 2005 champion, opened with two losses and a tie, then rebounded with three straight victories by a combined 16-1 score. Porto (3-1-2), which won 2-0 at Besiktas, won Group A with 11 points, one ahead of Liverpool (3-2-1). Because it lost to Marseille 1-0 at home in October, Liverpool needed a victory to advance.

Marseille (2-3-1) finished third and will move on to the UEFA Cup, Europe's No. 2 club tournament.

Real Madrid (3-1-2) won 3-1 over visiting Lazio (1-3-2) on first-half goals by Julio Baptista, Raul Gonzalez and Robinho to finish first in Group C. Olympiakos (3-1-2) claimed the other spot from Group C, beating visiting Werder Bremen (2-4) behind Ieroklis Stoltidis, who scored two goals and set up another.

Schalke (2-2-2) earned the second berth from Group B with a 3-1 victory over Rosenborg (2-3-1) on first-half goals by Gerald Asamoah, Marcio Rafinha and Kevin Kuranyi. Chelsea (3-0-3), which already had clinched a second-round berth, played a 0-0 tie against visiting Valencia (1-3-2).

Arsenal, Barcelona, Glagow Celtic, Internazionale of Milan, Manchester United, AC Milan, AS Roma, Sevilla also have clinched advancement, leaving the last two spots to be filled Wednesday. Fenerbahce, Glasgow Rangers, Lyon and PSV Eindhoven are contending for those places.

A second-half Mancini goal earned AS Roma a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday, scuppering the English side's bid to finish Group F with a perfect record of six wins.

The Brazilian midfielder stepped inside Wes Brown after Mirko Vucinic had found him on the left and curled the ball into the top corner in 71st minute.

Spanish defender Gerard Pique had headed in a Nani corner to put the visitors in front in the 34th.

The result does not alter the positions in Group F.

The Premier League champions, who were sure of topping the group before the game and fielded a second-string team, have 16 points while the Serie A side, who had already qualified for the knockout stage in second, are on 11.

After the trouble that marred both quarter-final ties between the two teams last season, there were more clashes among rival supporters. Five United fans and one Roma supporter were stabbed before kickoff, the ANSA news agency reported.

"This is something we hoped would not happen," United manager Alex Ferguson told a news conference. "We hoped for a quiet night with no incidents. I'm disappointed at that. I hope the fans are OK."

Roma had plenty of chances either side of Pique's opener.

Francesco Totti had the ball in the back of the net in the 11th minute but the goal was disallowed as the striker was offside when he latched on to Philippe Mexes's long pass.

Portuguese defender Antunes came close with a cross-cum-shot in the 20th minute, Mauro Esposito glanced the ball wide in the 29th and United's Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak produced a great save to keep out Mancini just before the break.

United's biggest scare of the first half came in the 37th minute when Totti rolled the ball to Mancini, who hit the crossbar from short range and Esposito headed the rebound over the bar. The effort would not have counted though, as Totti was offside again.

GREAT OPPORTUNITY

The visitors almost doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Michael Carrick diverted a corner towards Chris Eagles whose attempt was flicked over by Doni.

Louis Saha later wasted a great opportunity, firing straight at Doni when clean through on goal.

Antunes, French midfielder Ludovic Giuly and Vucinic came close to snatching a win for Roma in the final stages.

"We're satisfied with the performance," Ferguson said. "We're a bit disappointed with the second half. Sometimes we gave possession away and we also watched the goal. It's always a lesson in European football."

He praised the young players in his side, saying they were better prepared mentally than when they had their last chance at first-team action, in September's League Cup defeat by Coventry City.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said his substitutions were key to earning his side a draw.

"In the second half the fresh players gave speed and brilliance to the team and put on a show for the public," he said.

Olympique Lyon and Fenerbahce filled the last two Champions League knockout places on Wednesday, after emphatic wins over Rangers and CSKA Moscow.

Rangers started the night with every hope of emulating Glasgow rivals Celtic and reaching the last 16 after beating French champions Olympique Lyon 3-0 away early in the group stage.

But Lyon responded in kind at Ibrox on Wednesday, Sidney Govou scoring in the 16th minute, followed by Karim Benzema in the 85th and 88th.

Lyon go through second from Group E behind already-qualified Barcelona, who beat VfB Stuttgart 3-1. Rangers are condemned to the UEFA Cup, their misery compounded by a red card for Jean-Claude Darcheville in the dying moments of the match for a dangerous challenge on Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom.

Fenerbahce, roared on by a deafening crowd, won 3-1 and always looked the stronger side against CSKA who were already confirmed bottom of Group G.

It was the Russians who went ahead, however, after Edu put the ball in his own net in an embarrassing mix-up with goalkeeper Volkan Demirel after 30 minutes.

It took only two minutes for the home side to reply, Brazilian playmaker Alex firing a 25-metre scorcher left-footed past a stranded Igor Akinfeyev.

Alex set up Fenerbahce's second on the stroke of halftime passing to Ugur Boral, who angled a low shot neatly from the right.The industrious Ugur headed a third in the last minute.

HOPES DASHED

Fenerbahce join Inter Milan from the group in the draw for the first knockout round on Dec. 21. Their win dashed the hopes of PSV Eindhoven, who lost 1-0 to Inter at home after Edison Mendez was sent off in the 28th minute. Julio Cruz scored for the Italians in the 64th.

PSV will now join the draw for the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

Sevilla and Arsenal had already qualified from Group H. Sevilla's 2-0 away win over Slavia Prague ensured they topped the group. Arsenal beat Steaua Bucharest 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium and Slavia go through to the UEFA Cup.

Group F was decided before Wednesday's games. Manchester United, who topped the group, drew 1-1 with Roma who came second.

United went ahead through Spanish defender Gerard Piquet in the 34th minute and the home side equalised in the 71st when Brazilian midfielder Mancini curled the ball into the top corner of the net.

Portugal's Sporting, who will be playing UEFA cup football in the new year, beat Dynamo Kiev 3-0. The Ukrainians finished their campaign without a point.

Julio Cruz struck midway through the second half to give Inter Milan a 1-0 victory over 10-man PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday and end the Dutch side's hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League.

PSV had Edison Mendez sent off for a last-man foul on David Suazo after 27 minutes.

A wild clearance gave Suazo free passage to PSV goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and Mendez prevented the striker from opening the scoring with a professional foul.

Inter, without several players because of injury or suspension, started with five reserves but were never forced to play their best game and missed half a dozen chances before Cruz netted from close range.

The Italian club finished top of Group G with 15 points from six matches and were joined in the knockout phase by Fenerbahce (11), who beat CSKA Moscow 3-1. PSV were third with seven points and will go into the UEFA Cup next year.

PSV made a cautious start against the already qualified Italians but could not find a gap in the Inter defence and therefore resorted to long-distance strikes from Mike Zonneveld and Danko Lazovic.

"We knew it would be difficult to play against Inter with 11 players so with 10 it became very tough, though we still had some small chances to take a point," PSV coach Jan Wouters told reporters.

"It was a tough group with four champions but it is not a shame to finish third."

Mendez's sending off made the night easier for Inter but Cruz wasted three good chances before hitting the target.

"We played okay with this line up but for the coming match we have to see because there is always space for improvement," Inter coach Roberto Mancini said.

"My team is still developing but this is a different stage than the domestic league. For us both competitions are important."

Sevilla topped Champions League Group H on Wednesday after beating Slavia Prague 3-0 away with second-half goals from Luis Fabiano, Frederic Kanoute and Daniel Alves.

The win ensured Sevilla stayed ahead of Arsenal, who beat Steaua Bucharest 2-1 in London and also qualified for the knock-out stage.

Slavia secured third spot in the group with a draw against Steaua Bucharest two weeks ago and qualified for the UEFA Cup.

Both teams had chances in the first half, with the most promising attempts coming from Slavia striker Milan Ivana, who hit the post, and a header from Kanoute that went wide.

However, Sevilla shifted up a gear in the second half while Slavia's defensive errors began to mount up.

Substitute Luis Fabiano scored in the 66th minute from an Enzo Maresca pass through a disoriented Slavia defence.

Kanoute, who had two earlier shots saved by Slavia goalkeeper Martin Vaniak, made it 2-0 three minutes later from close range. Daniel Alves added the third, three minutes from time.

"In the first half, we were slower and unable to respond to pressure from Slavia," Sevilla manager Manuel Jimenez told reporters. "In the second, what dominated was our speed and rhythm."

Slavia coach Karel Jarolim blamed injury and poor defence for his side's loss.

"Our problem was that we were forced to make substitutions after the first half, and mainly we made huge mistakes in defence," he said.

"When Fabiano came on... we gave him way too much free room."

Group E winners Barcelona preserved their perfect record at home this season when they came from a goal down to beat VfB Stuttgart 3-1 at the Nou Camp in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Already eliminated Stuttgart took a shock lead in their final Group E match when Brazilian midfielder Antonio da Silva scored with a superbly struck free kick in the third minute.

But Barca fought back strongly, Mexican forward Giovani dos Santos equalising before halftime and Samuel Eto'o making it 2-1 just before the hour mark to announce his return to European competition after over three months out with a thigh injury.

Ronaldinho wrapped up the victory 10 minutes later to make it 11 home wins out of 11 in all competitions for the Catalans this season.

Barca, who had clinched first place in the group with a 2-2 draw at Olympique Lyon two weeks ago, finished top with 14 points, four clear of the Ligue 1 side who claimed the other place in the last 16 with a 3-0 win at Rangers.

"On paper it was not an important game, but both teams took it seriously and I was particularly pleased to see Samuel score," Barca president Joan Laporta told Canal Plus television.

"It is vital for the team that he is back after so long out and it was a very significant goal for the team."

NEW-LOOK TEAM

With nothing at stake, Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard fielded a shadow side against the Germans featuring several second-string players including goalkeeper Albert Jorquera and highly-rated youngster Giovani.

The new-look team found themselves a goal down in the third minute when Da Silva ballooned a free kick over the wall and into the top corner.

Barca responded by laying siege to the Stuttgart area but, although they manufactured a host of scoring chances, they were frustrated by a string of great saves from Raphael Schaefer.

Eto'o, Xavi and Giovani all had goal-bound efforts blocked by Schaefer and it was not until nine minutes before the break that the Catalans managed to find a way past him.

Ronaldinho dispossessed full back Arthur Boka on the right flank and curled a shot towards the far post that deflected off the body of Giovani and span into the net.

Eto'o put Barca in front early in the second half when he cut between the Stuttgart centre backs and fired home with his left foot after Xavi had surged his way up field during a neatly worked counter attack.

Ronaldinho rounded off the scoring after 67 minutes by sliding into the area to steer a low shot past Schaefer after Silvinho had cut the ball in from the left.

در مسابقات فصل جاری جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا، رئال مادرید هنوز نتوانسته است در یک بازی خارج از خانه پیروز شود.
در شب اول مرحله حذفی این مسابقات، رئال مادرید در پایتخت ایتالیا از آ اس رم 2-1 شکست خورد.

پیشتاز لیگ اسپانیا که در سه دیدار پیشین خود با رم پیروز شده بود، در دقیقه 8 این مسابقه هم با گل رائول گونزالز، کاپیتان و مهاجم این تیم، از میزبان پیش افتاد.

دو دقیقه بعد از به ثمر رسیدن شصتمین گل رائول در مسابقات باشگاهی اروپا، رود ون نیستلروی، مهاجم هلندی رئال مادرید توپ را درون دروازه رم قرار داد، هرچند داور رای به آفساید او داد و گل مردود اعلام شد.

اما در دقیقه 24 مسابقه، مدافعان رئال یک توپ بلند ارسال شده بر روی دروازه خود را کوتاه دفع کردند تا دیوید پیزارو، بازیکن اهل شیلی تیم رم، با شوتی محکم که در میانه راه به مدافعان رئال نیز برخورد کرد، توپ را دور از دستان کاسیاس، دروازه بان رئال، درون دروازه تیم میهمان قرار دهد.

همانطور که پیش از بازی نیز کارشناسان اشاره کرده بودند، آ اس رم، شرایطی آرمانی نداشت و به ویژه فرانچسکو توتی، مدافع سرشناس این تیم در شصت و پنجمین بازی باشگاهی خود در اروپا، به زمان زیادی احتیاج داشت تا بر بازی تسلط پیدا کند.

مادرید پس از دریافت گل مساوی کماکان بهتر از رم عمل می کرد اما، در نیمه دوم توتی بیدار شده بود و در دقیقه 60 مسابقه، با ارسال یک پاس نفوذی، قابلیت های بالای خود را به نمایش گذاشت.

توپ با این پاس به آمانتینی مانسینی، هافبک برزیلی رم رسید که پس از عبور از سد کاسیاس که از دروازه خارج شده بود، توپ را درون دروازه رئال مادرید قرار داد.

رئال به شدت حملاتش افزود اما رم پر تعداد دفاع می کرد و هرچند میهمان چند موقعیت دیگر برای گل زنی به دست آورد، اما در نهایت هیچکدام از این موقعیتها به گل منجر نشد تا رئال مادرید، تنها با اتکا به گل زده خارج از خانه به انتظار بازی برگشت در سانتیاگو برنابو بنشیند.

آ اس رم، از هشتم دسامبر 2004 که در مسابقه ای بدون تماشاچی به رئال مادرید باخت، در مسابقات اروپایی تا کنون در استادیوم المپیک پایتخت ایتالیا به هیچ تیمی نباخته است (10 برد و 4 مساوی).

پیروزی لیورپول بر اینتر 10 نفره


استیون جرارد، کاپیتان لیورپول در آخرین دقایق بازی، با زدن گل دوم کار را تمام کرد
لیورپول 85 دقیقه منتظر ماند تا تیم 10 نفره اینترمیلان را در خانه شکست دهد.

اینترمیلان که در پنج بازی آخر خود در جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا پیروز شده بود، در دقیقه 30 مسابقه، در تصمیمی بحث برانگیز از سوی داور که حتی واکنش تحلیلگران بریتانیایی را نیز درپی داشت، شاهد اخراج مارکو ماتراتزی، مدافع وسط و تنها بازیکن ایتالیایی خود بواسطه گرفتن کارت زرد دوم بود.

با این حال اینترمیلان 10 نفره با ارائه یک عملکرد دفاعی موفق تحت رهبری ایوان کوردوبا، توانست لیورپول را مستاصل کند.

لیورپول که کمتر از یک هفته قبل، به دست تیم ضعیف و دسته اولی بارنزلی از گردونه جام حذفی انگلستان خارج شده بود، با قاطعیت آغاز کرد و در اوایل بازی، صدرنشین جدول سری آ، لیگ باشگاه های برتر ایتالیا را تهدید کرد.

در نهایت، در دقیقه 85 ارسال عرضی توپ به سمت چپ دروازه اینترمیلان از سوی پنانت، درک کویت، مهاجم هلندی لیورپول را صاحب موقعیتی برای گلزنی کرد که ضربه کویت پس از برخورد به مدافعان، وارد دروازه اینترمیلان شد و کمتر از 5 دقیقه پس از آن، استیون جرارد، با ضربه ای قطری و زمینی از بیرون گوشه سمت راست محوطه جریمه اینترمیلان، گل دیگری به ثمر رساند تا لیورپول، دربازی برگشت در استادیوم سن سیرو، با دو گل برتری کار را آغاز کند.

در دیگر بازی ها شالکه 04 ، در زمین خود با گل دقیقه 4 کوین کورانی پورتو را شکست داد تا به اولین پیروزی خود در مرحله حذفی جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا دست یابد.

چلسی هم در هوای سرد آتن، پایتخت یونان، در غیاب جان تری کاپیتان خود، نتوانست مقابل المپیاکوس، که برای اولین بار در 9 فصل گذشته به مرحله حذفی مسابقات رسیده، بیش از یک امتیاز کسب کند.

کابوس در سلتیک پارک


بارسلونا آخرین تیمی بود که در بازیهای اروپایی سلتیک را در زمین این تیم شکست داده بود
در میان تیمهای اروپایی تنها بارسلونا رمز پیروزی در سلتیک پارک را می داند.
بارسلونا که در اواخر سال 2004 در مرحله گروهی جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا در این استادیوم شهر گلاسکو تیم فوتبال سلتیک را شکست داد، آخرین تیمی بود که توانست این تیم را در زمین خود شکست دهد.

در مسابقات شب دوم دور رفت مرحله یک هشتم نهایی جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا هم بارسلونا دوبار اختلاف با سلتیک را جبران کرد تا در نهایت خاطره آن شکست را در مرحله ای حساس تر تکرار کند.

سلتیک که در مرحله گروهی مسابقات فصل جاری هر سه بازی خانگی خود را برده بود، دوبار از بارسلونا پیش افتاد.

بارسلونا با اعتماد به نفس آغاز کرد اما در دقیقه 16 مسابقه، سلتیک توپ را به درون محوطه جریمه میهمان رساند و توپی قوس دار، با شیرجه و ضربه سر یان ونه گور، مهاجم هلندی سلتیک، درون دروازه بارسلونا قرار گرفت.

لیونل مسی تنها سه دقیقه بعد پس از اجرای "یک دو" با دکو، از درون محوطه جریمه سلتیک، توپ را به سقف دروازه میزبان کوبید.

بری رابسون در دقیقه 39 نتیجه را 2-1 به سود سلتیک تغییر داد، اما در نیمه دوم (دقیقه 53) لو رفتن توپ سلتیک در میانه میدان به رونالدینیو، که برای اولین بار از ماه دسامبر سال 2007 از آغاز در ترکیب بارسلونا حاضر بود، امکان داد تا با ارسال یک توپ عمقی برای تیری آنری، شرایط گل زنی را برای این بازیکن فرانسوی فراهم کند.

لیونل مسی اکنون با به ثمر رساندن شش گل در مسابقات فصل جاری جام قهرمانان باشگاه های اروپا، در صدر جدول گلزنان قرار دارد.

در شهر لیون فرانسه، در شبی که رایان گیگز بازیکن سرشناس منچستریونایتد در صدمین بازی اروپایی خود با این باشگاه، عملکرد چشمگیری نداشت، احتمالا آلکس فرگوسن مربی او حتی به باخت 1-0 هم راضی بود، اما در نهایت این مربی 62 ساله با نتیجه ای بهتر لیون را ترک کرد.

لیون، پیشتاز رقابتهای لیگ 1 فرانسه که در تلاش است برای هفتمین سال پیاپی قهرمان باشگاه های فوتبال این کشور شود، از همان چیزی ضربه خورد که در راه کسب این افتخار مانع ایجاد کرده است: پیوستگی در دفاع.

منچستریونایتد 10 درصد بیشتر از لیون توپ را در اختیار داشت (55 درصد زمان بازی)، اما با این حال در نیمه اول فقط یک موقعیت جدی بر روی دروازه میزبان ایجاد کرد.

در دور برگشت مرحله یک هشتم نهایی این مسابقات، آرسنال با دو گل در 10 دقیقه پایانی مسابقه، 2-0 آث میلان را شکست داد.

در این مسابقه که در استادیوم سن سیرو شهر میلان برگزار شد، میزبان نتوانست از بازی در استادیوم خانگی مقابل تماشاگران پرشور ایتالیایی استفاده کند و بیشتر آرسنال بود که جریان بازی را در اختیار داشت.

آرسنال چندین بار با استفاده از پاسهای تک ضرب، در ظرف چند ثانیه خود را از زمین دفاع به زمین حمله رساند و حتی در نیمه اول یک بار تیر دروازه میزبان ایتالیایی خود را هدف قرار داد.

اما دو دقیقه پس از پایان وقت قانونی بازی آرسنال، با سماجت و نفوذ تئو والکات، ارسال عرضی توپ، و ضربه امانوئل آده بایور، دروازه آث میلان را برای بار دوم باز کرد تا عملا کار برای تیم ایتالیایی تمام شده باشد.

Arsenal face Liverpool in Europe

Arsenal will meet Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after they were paired together in Friday's draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
Arsene Wenger's side will play the first leg at home on 2 April, with the return leg at Anfield on 8 April.

Manchester United, who beat Lyon to reach the last eight, were drawn against Real Madrid's conquerors Roma.

Chelsea, the fourth English club in the draw, face Fenerbahce, with Schalke 04 versus Barcelona the other fixture.

The winners of the Arsenal-Liverpool showdown - the first time those two clubs will have met in European competition - will then take on Chelsea or Fenerbahce in the semi-finals, while Manchester United or Roma face Barcelona or Schalke 04.

The legs for the last-four ties will take place on 22/23 April and 29/30 April.

It means if Chelsea overcome Fenerbahce in their quarter-final, not only could they face their semi-final conquerors of 2005 and 2007 in Liverpool but also that England would be guaranteed a presence in the final in Moscow on 21 May.

And with Fenerbahce and Schalke 04 appearing in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time and Roma having never got past this stage, English sides make up four of the top five favourites, according to the bookies.

However, Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry could barely hide his disappointment at having to play the Gunners, saying: "We'd hoped to avoid an English team but an all-English tie was bound to happen and it's happened to us. At least we've avoided a trip to Turkey.

We're also playing Arsenal in the league in between the quarter-final legs so that will be interesting. I don't think there will be any surprises for either side in those games.

"Of course, we've noticed we might also face another English side (Chelsea) in the last four as well."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "We have the holders and the finalists on our route, having just knocked Milan out which was a big hurdle.

"We were strong enough to knock the holders out so lets do it against Liverpool.

"I said ideally you would like to pay a foreign team because it's Europe but I prepared myself to play anyone. We are highly determined to go through."

Meanwhile, Manchester United club secretary Ken Ramsden said: "It's a good draw for us, I think. I'm happy we're playing continental opposition and we have a good record against them.

"I'm sure the manager will also be happy that we're playing at home in the second leg so we're content with that."

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon was equally happy to have avoided an English side in the draw, adding: "I'm delighted.

"There are no easy draws at this stage but we wanted to avoid an English side and we've done that.

"Despite a couple of disappointing results of late, we've complete confidence in the team and coaching staff to ensure we have a good end to the season."

BBC Sport football expert Alan Hansen concluded: "It would have been great for England to have all four sides kept apart but Manchester United and Chelsea have got to be happy.

"They are favourites to get through their ties and, with Arsenal still fighting on two fronts and Liverpool being able to concentrate on the Champions League, I'd tip the Reds to join them in the semi-finals.

"The only way to judge your domestic product is in European competition and in having four sides out of eight in the quarter-finals, England have shown their league is second to none."

منچستریونایتد با پیروزی 2-0 مقابل آ اس رم، گامی بزرگ برای رسیدن به مرحله نیمه نهایی این مسابقات برداشت.

Manchester United became the third English team to reach the Champions League semifinals Wednesday, and the two-time champions will face FC Barcelona in the next round.

United advanced by beating AS Roma 1-0 and 3-0 on aggregate, with Carlos Tevez scoring the only goal with a diving header in the 70th minute. The win for United was a Champions League record 11th consecutive at home.

"If we've got a full squad we've got a chance. Somebody has got to lose," United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said of the semifinals. "You have opportunities in life when you've got something special and we have something special and we want to go there and show that. We have to go there and be positive."

Barcelona got its goal in the 43rd from Yaya Toure in a 1-0 win over Schalke that gave the Spanish team a 2-0 aggregate win.

Barcelona and Manchester United are the only unbeaten teams left in the Champions League. Chelsea, the only club remaining to have never won the European Cup, and Liverpool meet in the other semifinal series for the third time in four years.

Tevez scored with a diving header off a cross from Calgary-born midfielder Owen Hargreaves, long after Daniele de Rossi missed a penalty for the Italian team in the 30th.

Last April, United routed Roma 7-1 and advanced to semifinals 8-3 on aggregate, but then lost to eventual champion AC Milan.

"We put in a good game and a good performance," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. "We had to take one or two risks. It was important to exploit chances when we actually created them, but didn't capitalize on them. If we had it would have changed the face of the game."

Barcelona, which won the Champions League two years ago but was ousted by Liverpool in the second round last season, hosts Manchester United on April 23. The return leg six is set for April 29.

Barcelona took the lead when Bojan Krkic's cross was deflected up and headed around before falling to Toure in the box.

Ronaldinho and Deco, two players who have missed lengthy periods to injury, were not in the lineup.

"This team deserves a lot of credit for what it's done. It's fought to the end to achieve this result," Barcelona president Joan Laporta said. "It's a moment to savour."

Schalke coach Mirko Slomka said his team didn't play to its potential.

"We played 90 very good minutes out of the 180 against Barcelona and the two times we let our guard down they took advantage," Slomka said.

Chelsea reached the semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons on Tuesday with a 2-0 with a win over Fenerbahce. Five-time champion Liverpool advanced after a 4-2 win over Arsenal.

Liverpool hosts Chelsea on April 22 and visits Stamford Bridge on April 30.

Liverpool beat Chelsea in semifinals in 2005 and '07, winning the title three years ago.

The Champions League final is scheduled to be played in Moscow on May 2 1.
