Spain took just 350 seconds to find the net while Group A rivals South Africa and Iraq failed to do so over 90 minutes as the Confederations Cup got off to a mixed start Sunday.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick within 17 minutes of the kick-off as tournament favourites Spain routed New Zealand 5-0 at a half-full Rustenburg stadium.

A near-capacity 48,000 crowd in Johannesburg saw the hosts create and waste several good scoring chances as ultra-cautious Iraq held out for a 0-0 draw in an event serving as a dress rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The result confirmed that European champions Spain are set to steamroll past their three pool opponents and into the semi-finals of a tournament last staged four years ago in Germany and won by Brazil.

But who joins them in the knockout phase is far from certain and blunt South Africa could rue their failure to put away the Asian champions in the opening match of the two-week tournament.

African kingpins Egypt are the first Group B opponents for Brazil in Bloemfontein Monday with World Cup holders Italy facing the United States later in Pretoria.

Spain wasted little time getting down to business, forcing a corner on four minutes and Torres scored off a Cesc Fabregas pass soon after to trigger a rout of the All Whites.

He curled the ball into the net for his first, sidefooted it home for the second, and headed the third before Arsenal midfielder Fabregas was set up by Juan Capdevila for the fourth midway through the opening half.

At this stage the Cup record winning margin of six goals achieved twice by Brazil appeared set to fall, but the Euro 2008 winners managed only one more three minutes into the second half from David Villa as they eased off.

"We did what we had to do, we started with a good rhythm and played good football and were leading 4-0 after 24 minutes. The second half was a question of saving energy for our next match," said Spain coach Vicente del Bosque.

Torres added: "It was great for the team and for me it is always important to score. I got three so I'm very happy."

South Africa coach Joel Santana slammed negative Iraq, but when his team did break through they were guilty of finishing that bodes ill for their chances of making an impression as World Cup hosts.

Strikers Bernard Parker and Terror Fanteni lacked support from an unimaginative midfield and the former blocked a goal-bound Kagisho Dikgacoi header late in the second half.

Substitute Katlego Mashego was another culprit, bursting through soon after his 78th-minute entrance only for goalkeeper Mohammed Kassis to advance bravely and push the ball away.

"Iraq never tried to play football," complained Santana. "They tried to paralyse the game. We could easily have scored two or three goals. That is football sometimes."

Widely travelled Iraq coach Bora Milutinovic countered: "It was not easy playing the host nation. We did everything to try and win the game. I'm sorry if you thought it was boring."

Brazil edged South Africa 1-0 in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup to book a ticket to the showpiece finale on Sunday to take on the United States .

Barcelona ’s marauding wing-back, Dani Alves was the hero of the night for the Copa America champions when he came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute before ripping in the winner from a freekick two minutes from time. And he was thrilled to have played his part in helping his side win.

“I’m impressed with the goal that I scored today,” he said during the post-match interviews.

“I’m happy to get a chance to play and help the team. When you are on the bench, you always have an enormous desire to enter the game and today was one of those days,” he added.

In regards to his freekick goal, Alves recounted, “I struck the ball really well but my team-mates also did their bit because they formed a really good distraction next to the wall and that disrupted the goalkeeper’s vision.”

The 26-year-old, however, was slightly disappointed that he won’t be able to go up against some of his club-mates and rivals from Spain after they were eliminated by the USA in the other semi-final. But he admitted that the upset result has taught his Brazilian side a lesson.

“In a tournament like this, every team will have their chances,” he said. “ Spain ’s game last night served as a lesson for us before we took on South Africa , and it will also serve as a lesson for us ahead of Sunday’s final.”

Lucio scored a late goal to give Brazil a 3-2 win over the upstart United States and a second straight Confederations Cup title Sunday.

The Brazil captain headed in a corner from Elano in the 84th minute to help the five-time world champions hold off a spirited American team that had taken a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Luis Fabiano scored two goals in the second half to put Brazil back in the match after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan had given the Americans the lead.

Brazil, which won its third Confederations Cup title, looked like a beaten team in the first half, creating little and being constantly stymied by the United States defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard.

But Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute as Brazil’s “Beautiful Game” burst into life. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament.

He added a fifth in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka’s cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho.

Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 semifinal win over Spain, gave the Americans the lead in the 10th minute by redirecting a cross from Jonathan Spector. Donovan added the second by finishing off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th.

Spector started the unthinkable after only 10 minutes, running down the right and sending a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar.

Donovan then got possession at his own end shortly after Maicon had sent in a corner for Brazil from the right. The United States midfielder ran up the middle, passed to Davies and then reclaimed the ball from his teammate before beating Julio Cesar.

The Americans appeared to get some luck in the 60th when Kaka headed a cross from Andre Santos to the near post. Howard stepped back into his goal and knocked the shot off the underside of the crossbar and then grabbed it safely in his arms.

Kaka yelled at the referee and his linesman, arguing that the ball has crossed the line before Howard was able to get to it, and television replays appeared to show he was correct.

In the third-place match, Spain rallied to beat host South Africa 3-2 in extra time in Rustenburg.

                Lineups:

United States: Tim Howard, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Jonathan Spector, Ricardo Clark (Conor Casey, 8, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Charlie Davies, Jozy Altidore (Jonathan Bornstein, 75), Benny Feilhaber (Sacha Klejstan, 75).

Brazil: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Luisao, Lucio, Andre Santos (Daniel Alves, 66), Felipe Melo, Gilberto Silva, Ramires (Elano, 67), Kaka, Robinho, Luis Fabiano.

For 45 minutes, it was no contest. American goalkeeper Tim Howard was outplaying Brazil’s Julio Cesar, considered by many among the world’s best goalies.

Then the second half started, and the United States’ 2-0 lead turned into a 3-2 loss to Brazil in Sunday’s Confederations Cup final.

Howard was brilliant in the first half, but Brazil’s powerful offense staged a relentless assault on the goalie the entire second half, capping the comeback with Lucio’s game-winning score in the 84th minute.

“You look around at their players and you realize why they’re worth so much and why they play at the teams that they play,” a somber Landon Donovan said. “It’s disappointing when we gave such a good effort today.”

And few gave a better effort than Howard. He was not responsible for any of Brazil’s goals, and he made five saves to Julio Cesar’s zero in the first half.

Howard stretched out his 6-foot-3 frame to push a shot wide from Brazil’s speediest striker, Robinho, in the 13th minute. In the 35th, the New Jersey native saved a dangerous effort from Andre Santos, then deflected another shot from Robinho in the 41st.

But the five-time World Cup champions’ class was evident as soon as the second half began. Not even a minute in, Luis Fabiano beat Howard.

Howard managed to keep the Americans ahead, intercepting a dangerous cross from Maicon and stopping a header from sturdy defender Lucio in the 58th. He also put up his hands to block a header from Kaka in the 60th, sending the ball rattling off the crossbar, though Brazil clearly thought the ball had gone in.

Howard smothered one more shot from Fabiano in the 71st, but the striker notched his second goal three minutes later to even the score at 2-2.

Dempsey lost sight of Lucio in the 84th and the defender headed home the winner in the 84th.

As Brazil jumped for joy at the final whistle, Howard stood with his hands on his knees and watched with envy.
