Who Is David Meca ?
David Meca Medina (born February 1, 1974 in Sabadell) is a long distance swimmer from Spain, who has swum from mainland Spain to Ibiza among his exploits. He won gold at the 2005 FINA World Championships in Montréal for the Men's Open Water 25km.
Meca tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone at a marathon World Cup event in Brazil in 1999. He appealed against his two-year suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, and had it reduced to one year.
Meca took silver in the 5km event at the 2000 World Championships in Hawaii. He also won silver in the 25km competition and a bronze in the 10km at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Meca successfully swam the English Channel on 10 Aug 2004 in a time of 7 h 46 mins and again on 29 Aug 2005 in a time of 7 h 22 mins.
He swims for the Club Natació Sabadell.

In January 2008 he crossed three times the Estrecho de Gibraltar in 12 hours without stopping, with waves of 2 metres and very bad weather.

David Meca says he will make the attempt on January 3 and it will take him some 13 hours
Spanish swimmer David Meca has announced he is preparing to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar three times non-stop on January 3.
He gave the news in Madrid on Saturday when he also showed off his new neoprene swimming suit, just 1mm thick, which he will be wearing. It’s made from synthetic rubber and offers great protection from the cold. Current temperature of the waters of Gibraltar is around 12 ºC.
Meca described the Strait as the Everest for swimmers and said he intended to set out on the first leg from Tarifa at 9am on January 3. He says he expects to arrive in Ceuta at 10pm that night after having made the crossing three times, a distance of some 60 kilometres.
David Meca already holds the record for swimming the Strait after he recorded a time of 2 hours 29 minutes in the year 2000.
