اسپانیا با گل دقیقه 92 داوید ویا، ستاره بازی اول این تیم، سوئد را 2-1 شکست داد تا در صدر گروه D قرار بگیرد.

سوئد، آخرین تیمی که اسپانیا را در بک مسابقه رسمی در مسابقات انتخابی این تورنمنت در ماه اکتبر سال 2006 شکست داده بود، موفق شده بود تا دقیقه 92 بازی از تکرار حادثه ای مشابه دیدار اسپانیا و روسیه جلوگیری کند، اما در آخرین دقیقه مسابقه از کسب یک امتیاز بازماند.

ضربه اول در این مسابقه توسط اسپانیا وارد شد.

در دقیقه 15 داوید ویا، ستاره بازی اول اسپانیا، پس از دریافت توپ از نقطه کرنر، آن را از گوشه سمت چپ محوطه جریمه سوئد به سمت دروازه این تیم ارسال کرد که در میانه راه، فرناندو تورس با جلو آوردن پای خود و تغییر دادن جهت حرکت توپ، دروازه بان سوئد را غافلگیر ساخت و توپ را درون دروازه حریف جای داد.

اما به تدریج در ادامه نیمه اول سوئد جریان بازی را در اختیار گرفت و در دقیقه 34، در شرایطی که تعویض اجباری پویول مدافع میانی اسپانیا و بارسلونا به دلیل مصدومیت (با رائول البیول از والنسیا)، از توان دفاعی اسپانیا کاسته بود، به گل رسید.

ارسال توپ از سمت راست محوطه جریمه اسپانیا، زلاتان ابراهیموویچ، مهاجم سوئد و اینترمیلان را در گوشه سمت چپ منطقه شش قدم و پشت دروازه اسپانیا صاحب توپ ساخت.

اما سرجیو راموس، مدافع مقابل ابراهیموویج نتوانست مانعی مقابل این بازیکن ایجاد کند، و ابراهیموویچ با چرخش به سمت دروازه اسپانیا، به راحتی توپ را دور از دستان کاسیاس، دروازه بان اسپانیا درون دروازه این تیم قرار داد تا بازی را به تساوی بکشد.


گروه D: آتش زیر خاکستر

سوئد که در میان مسن ترین تیمهایی که در تاریخ این تورنمنت حضور داشته اند، با میانگین 31 سال و سه روز در مقام دوم است، در نیمه دوم مسابقه با موفقیت امکان ایجاد هرگونه خطر از سوی بازیکنان تکنیکی اسپانیا را گرفت، هرچند خروج ابراهیموویچ از زمین در ابتدای نیمه، توان تهاجمی این تیم را به شدت کاهش داد.

نزدیک بازی کردن خط میانی و دفاع سوئد امکان ارسال پاسهای نفوذی را از اسپانیا گرفته بود، اما با این وجود اسپانیا دو بار در دقایق 63 و 89 بازی دروازه سوئد را تهدید کرد.

در دقیقه 63 اسپانیا سه موقعیت پیاپی را برای زدن گل دوم از دست داد.

آشفتگی در خط دفاع سوئد داوید سیلوا را مقابل دروازه سوئد صاحب توپ کرد، اما آندرئالس ایساکسون، دروازه بان سوئد ابتدا ضربه او و سپس ضربه داوید ویا را مهار کرد، و ضربه سوم از سوی فرناندو تورس نیز توسط دانیل آندرسون دفع شد.

در دقیقه 89 هم فرناندو تورس بار دیگر با جا گذاشتن مدافعان سوئد در حرکتی عرضی مقابل محوطه 18 قدم سوئد، ایساکسون را وادار به واکنش دربرابر ضربه ای محکم کرد.

اما اسپانیا که می دانست احتمال دیدار برنده این بازی با تیم قدرتمند هلند کمتر است، تا انتهای بازی از تلاش دست نکشید و با وجود عملکردی نه چندان چشمگیر در سراسر بازی، در دقیقه 92 ضربه نهایی را وارد کرد.

خوان کاپدویا، توپ بلندی را روانه زمین سوئد کرد، اما دو مدافع سوئد نتوانستند داوید ویا را که بین آنها به دنبال توپ در حال حرکت به سمت دروازه سوئد بود مهار کنند، و ویا با شتابی مثل زدنی، در سمت چپ محوطه جریمه سوئد پس از تصاحب توپ، آن را در گوشه سمت راست دروازه حریف جای داد.

به این ترتیب اسپانیا با 6 امتیاز از دو بازی در صدر جدول گروه D قرار گرفت.

Greece 0-1 Russia

Russia beat Greece to send the holders crashing out of Euro 2008 and set up a deciding final game against Sweden for a place in the last eight.

Konstatin Zyryanov scored the winner from close range in the 34th minute after Sergei Semak cashed in on Greek keeper Antonis Nikopolidis's mistake.

Angelos Charisteas wasted Greece's best chances either side of the interval.

Roman Pavlyuchenko could have added to Russia's tally, but their win sent Spain into the last eight.

I’ve finally had a chance to catch up on watching some of the Euro 2008 matches I missed. The jet lag hit me later in the week, so I found myself watching many of the games this week at weird hours on DVR.

The one thing about football is that it can be so subjective. Earlier in the week, I found myself watching the 1-0 Croatia win against Austria game on the giant screen TV at the FanZone in Zurich. To me, Croatia looked like a very hard working team in the first half who were playing some wonderful football. Especially impressive was Ivica Olic, the Croat striker who plays for Hamburg, who was a workhouse throughout the game putting in an incredible performance. If ever there was a player who would do well in the Premier League, Olic is it.

In their game against Austria, Croatia changed their tactics in the second half, which allowed Austria to press forward more. And it was the Austrians who impressed me, putting to bed all the fears about them being the worst team in the tournament.

So I was surprised when I returned to the States and was hearing and reading the comments about Croatia looking weak in their first match. Against Germany, the Croats showed their true strength in their 2-1 win and it’s now Germany — many people’s favorites to win Euro 2008 — who risk getting knocked out of the tournament depending what happens in their final match against Austria.

The other thing I found surprising when I returned to the States was the perception among many that this has been a boring tournament thus far. Sure, it’s easier to enjoy the atmosphere and games when you’re experiencing them in Switzerland, but still, the tournament to me has been one of the most exciting football events in quite some time, even more so than World Cup 2006. The France against Romania nil-nil match was horrible, but aside from that, I’ve enjoyed all of the other matches.

Speaking of Romania, their 1-1 draw against Italy on Friday was a brilliant match to watch. So much goalmouth action with balls hitting the post or goalkeepers pulling off incredible saves. Buffon’s penalty save, too, was amazing to watch. Romania could have easily won the match in the first half, while Italy showed in this game their masterful technical touches — beautiful flicks, excellent ball control, deft passes and wonderful creativity — something which is desperately lacking in the Premier League and on the England national team.

Italy, though, has to feel cheated by the goal that was ruled offside. On replay, it’s clear that the goal should have counted. But when I watched it in real-time, it looked to me to be offside, so I empathize why the referee and assistant referee thought the whistle should have been blown for offside.

I’ve been writing about how impressed I’ve been about Holland since Monday and they completely blew me away again on Friday with their 4-1 win against France. In fairness, the French are to blame for this scoreline as they had plenty of chances to score. Just as in the match against Italy, the Dutch took full advantage of the chances they had with their clinical finishing.

While Holland and Croatia continue to impress, Portugal can be added to that list. In their first game against Turkey, I thought the Portugese looked very entertaining with Pepe, especially, being a revelation. Portugal also looked breathtaking in the 3-1 win over Czech Republic. So far this tournament, the Czechs have done very little to impress me.

For all of the bad press Austria got from the pundits and their own fans before the tournament started, I’ve been more impressed by the Austrians than Switzerland. Austria deserved to get the 1-1 draw against Poland earlier this week, and the penalty decision by Howard Webb, I believe, was a correct one.

Speaking of Switzerland, the national team was dealt a cruel blow when Alex Frei was injured in their 0-1 loss to Czech Republic. But in the Swiss 2-1 loss to Turkey, it was Turkey’s Arda Turan who was the relevation. The Galatasaray winger scored two beautiful goals. The first, a beautifully taken header, and the second was an amazing shot in the last minute of the game, which will be one of the goals of the tournament.

The one group I haven’t had a chance to watch so far this tournament is Group D because I was traveling throughout the day on Tuesday and missed Spain’s demolition of Russia and the entertaining game between Sweden and Greece. I’m looking forward to seeing those matches on Saturday.

Turkey 3-2 Czech R & Switzerland 2-0 Portugal

Nihat Kahveci scored two late goals to complete a pulsating Turkey comeback against the Czech Republic and secure his side a Euro 2008 last eight spot.

Jan Koller steered in a header to put the Czechs ahead before Jaroslav Plasil slid in to add a second.

Arda Turan slotted in for Turkey to set up a tense finale and Nihat equalised after Petr Cech dropped a cross.

Nihat then crashed in a shot off the bar before Turkey keeper Volkan Demirel was red-carded for a push on Koller.

Tuncay Sanli went in goal as Turkey saw the game out and completed a classic and unlikely comeback to set up a last eight tie against Croatia.

Cech is regarded a one of the best keepers in the world but his 87th minute clanger was the turning point of the game.

Penalties loomed then before Nihat beat the offside trap and brilliantly spun and sent a right-foot curler in off the underside of the crossbar.

The teams had gone into the match with identical group records and the straight showdown for a quarter-final berth had the Stade de Geneve rocking.

The Czechs seized the early initiative and saw Koller head over from a chipped free-kick by Marek Jankulovski.

Tuncay shot wide from 30 yards for Turkey but the Czechs looked more likely to score and Servet Cetin had to crucially intercept a low Libor Sionko cross with Koller lurking.

Sionko sent a rising shot just high of the Turkish goal and failed to get a toe to a dipping ball as Demirel gratefully gathered.

But Turkey's resolve finally buckled when the Czech pressure was converted into a goal with Koller's 34th minute header, which Demirel could not keep out despite getting a hand to the ball.

Koller had been recalled to the starting line-up after being dropped for the defeat to Portugal and his physical presence and height was a constant menace for the Turkish defence.


Cech cannot hide his agony after his mistake against Turkey

He sent another header high while Fatih Terim's side were devoid if ideas and invention as they struggled to find a route through the disciplined Czech's.

Turkey could only do better after the break and so it proved as they came out to rescue their Euro 2008.

Nihat acrobatic half-volley went high but had the element of surprise, while Turan started running at the Czech defence from is left wing slot.

Tuncay headed straight at Cech as Turkey went all out to score but left themselves exposed to the counter-attack.

Koller failed to take advantage when he shot wide before Plasil atoned for the miss when he met Sionko's cross on the half-volley just beyond the far post and sidefooted past Demirel.

Turkey were furious at the goal as they were desperately trying to bring on Emre Asik for injured central defender Emre Gungor, who had been stretchered off.

Jan Polak hit the post as the Czech's missed a chance to put Turkey out of reach and it proved crucial as Turan was found by Hamit Altintop and drove in a shot to make it 2-1 after 75 minutes.

Nihat's predatory instinct for the first and superb finishing for the second then won it for a joyous Turkey, who will be without Demirel for their quarter-final.

ترکیه 3 - 2 جمهوری چک

ژنو شاهد برگزاری یکی از پرحادثه ترین مسابقات جام سیزدهم بود.

ترکیه که تا دقیقه 75 با نتیجه 2-0 از جمهوری چک عقب بود، در ظرف پانزده دقیقه سه گل به ثمر رساند تا راهی مرحله بعد مسابقات شود.

جمهوری چک در اکثر مواقع نیمه اول توپ را در اختیار داشت و در هفتمین تلاش خود برای فتح دروازه ترکیه به نتیجه رسید.

این تیم در دقیقه 34 با ارسال توپ از سمت راست دروازه ترکیه، یان کولر، بازیکن بلندقد خود را مقابل محوطه شش قدم و دروازه ترکیه صاحب توپ ساخت که او، یک سر و گردن بالاتر از مدافع ترکیه، با ضربه سر توپ را با وجود تلاش دروازه بان ترکیه درون دروازه این تیم قرار داد.

در این نیمه ترکیه با بکار گرفتن دو بازیکن در خط میانی، عملا میانه میدان را از دست داده بود و توان تهاجمی چندانی از خود نشان نداد.

ترکیه، که با پیروزی نزدیک مقابل سویس تنها دومین پیروزی خود را در نه مسابقه جام ملتها کسب کرد، نیمه دوم را زیر باران و در میان تشویق تماشاگران پر شمار ترکیه تهاجمی آغاز کرد.


گروه A: در انتظار یک شگفتی ساز

ترکیه در 10 دقیقه اول این نیمه توپهای فراوانی را به منطقه جریمه جمهوری چک فرستاد اما فقدان یک تمام کننده این حملات را بی نتیجه ساخت و پیتر چک نیز سه بار دروازه جمهوری چک را از فروریختن حفظ کرد

اما 10 نفره شدن موقت ترکیه به دلیل مصدومیت امره گونگور روند بازی را تغییر داد.

در دقیقه 60 یان کولر به تنهایی به سمت دروازه ترکیه حمله کرد اما شوت او از کنار دروازه بیرون رفت.

اما ضربه اصلی در دقیقه 62 وارد شد که پلاشیل ارسال بلند لیبور سیونکو از سمت راست میدان را در سمت چپ منطقه شش قدم ترکیه با پا راهی دروازه کرد که بار دیگر تلاش دروازه بان ترکیه برای دفع توپ موثر نیفتاد و توپ وارد دروازه شد.

ترکیه تا اندازه ای تحت تاثیر گل دوم قرار گرفت که حدود 20 دقیقه به پایان بازی به نظر می رسید ترکیه شکست را پذیرفته است.

اما در دقیقه 75 ترکیه با حمله از سمت راست، استفاده از ناهماهنگی خط دفاعی جمهوری چک و ارسال توپ از میان محوطه جریمه جمهوری چک، آردا را در سمت چپ محوطه جریمه چک صاحب توپ کرد که او نیز توپ را با ضربه ای زمینی در دروازه چک جای داد.

ترکیه دوباره ارسالهای متعدد توپ از سمت راست دروازه چک را در دستور کار قرار داد که در دقیقه 87 پیتر چک، نتوانست ارسال توپ حمیت آلتینتاپ از سمت راست دروازه را کنترل کند که نیهات، کاپیتان ترکیه مقابل دروازه صاحب توپ شد و گل تساوی را به ثمر رساند.

با این حال ترکیه که می دانست این نتیجه به ضربات پنالتی منجر خواهد شد ضربه آخر را نیز وارد کرد.

در دقیقه 89 نیهات با فرار از تله آفساید مدافعان چک، از حاشیه محوطه جریمه چک توپ را از بالای دستان پیتر چک، به گوشه سمت راست دروازه فرستاد که توپ پس از برخورد با تیر افقی وارد دروازه شد.

یاکین شب طلایی خود را در کنار میرا بازیکن پرتغال جشن گرفت
دو ضربه از هاکان یاکین باعث شد سویس جام ملتها را با یک موفقیت به پایان برساند.

سویس میزبان مشترک این مسابقات و اولین تیم ناکام از صعود، تنها برای حفظ آبرو مقابل پرتغال به میدان رفت، البته در شرایطی که کسب مکان اول این گروه توسط پرتغال باعث شده بود لوئیز فیلیپ اسکولاری، مربی پرتغال بازیکنان اصلی خود را به میدان نفرستند.

با این وجود در 50 دقیقه ابتدای بازی احتمال گل زنی پرتغال، تنها تیمی که در حداقل چهار دوره این تورنمنت شرکت کرده و در هر بار از مرحله گروهی مقدماتی نیز به مرحله بعد صعود نموده،
بیشتر بود.

حملات پرتغال توسط ریکاردو کارشما و نانی انجام می شد، اما مهمترین حمله پرتغال که توسط پپه صورت گرفت، با واکنش دروازه بان سویس به تیر دروازه برخورد کرد و از زمین خارج شد.

سویس که در تاریخ حضورش در جام ملتهای اروپا با هشت شکست و تساوی، طولانی ترین نوار مسابقات بدون برد در تاریخ این تورنمنت را به نام خود ثبت کرده، بالاخره در دقیقه 70 مسابقه وقتی هاکان یاکین توپ را از میان پاهای ریکاردو دروازه بان پرتغال درون دروازه ان تیم جای داد طلسم را شکست.

تیم سویس که با میانگین 25 سال و 44 روز جوانترین تیم حاضر در مسابقات بود، در دقیقه 83 مسابقه و پس از اعلام خطای پنالتی از سوی داور به سود این تیم، کار را تمام کرد.

یاکین که در مسابقه با ترکیه دو موقعیت بسیار مناسب را برای گل زنی از دست داده بود، با قرار دادن توپ در دروازه پرتغال، توانست باعث شادی تماشاچیان خودی شود.

به این ترتیب در پایان مسابقات گروه A، ترتیب تیمها در این گروه (پس از سه بازی) به ترتیب زیر تغییر کرد:

Austria 0-1 Germany & Poland 0-1 Croatia

Michael Ballack's superb second-half strike handed Germany a last eight tie against Portugal at the expense of Austria who exited Euro 2008.

The Chelsea midfielder scored the only goal of the match when he fired in a powerful 30-yard shot from a free-kick won by Philipp Lahm.

Germany should have scored early in the match but Mario Gomez somehow missed from two yards.

Austria's best chance fell to Andreas Ivanschitz whose shot was blocked.

Germany edged the opening 45 minutes but it appeared Joachim Low's Plan A - asking his men to give prominence to their defensive duties - was a risky strategy.

Because the Germans adopted a different approach it appeared to affect them negatively and they were often caught dithering on the ball in the first half. 606: DEBATE

And when they were not dithering, they were guilty of giving the ball away.

Fortunately, for the three times European champions Austria have been unable to make the most of the gifts that have come their way at the tournament and against their neighbours little seemed to have changed.

For all their attacking endeavour, largely orchestrated by Umit Korkmaz and Erwin Hoffer, Austria only once managed to pierce a flimsy German defence when Hoffer found himself clear in the area only to let himself down with a poor first touch.

The Germans were not much better but they did look more threatening and should have taken the lead early on with one of the easiest chances any player will get at this championship.

The guilty party was Gomez, later substituted, who mis-kicked from two yards after great work from Miroslav Klose down the right.

Their other chance was created and despatched by the more potent Lukas Podolski who stung the hands of Jurgen Macho from 25 yards.

While most of the players kept their cool during the tense occasion, the same could not be said for coaches Low and Josef Hickersberger who were sent to the stands shortly before the break by referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez for what appeared to be an ongoing spat with the fourth official.

Whatever effect that had on the German team appeared to be positive as they came out after the interval with a roaring fire in their bellies.

That new found venom was symbolised by Ballack's strike which eased the worries for his side.

The marauding Lahm won a free-kick when he was fouled after a tremendous run towards the penalty area.

Chelsea midfielder Ballack stepped up to the mark and spanked his effort into Macho's top-left corner.

From that point on Germany looked odds-on to seal their ninth win in 12 competitive matches against Austria.

Austria heads dropped knowing that they needed to beat the Germans to stand any chance of joining co-hosts Switzerland as one of the eliminated teams.

Balls were now hit in hope into the German area and when Ivanschitz did find himself free he was denied by a great tackle from Lahm.

Torsten Frings and Klose went close to adding a second late on with well-struck efforts, but in the end the thunderbolt from talisman Ballack proved enough for Germany, who have reached the tournament knockout stages for the first time since they won the title in 1996.

بعد از شکست سنگین 3 بر صفر ایتالیا در مقابل هلند در اولین بازی و تساوی آنها در برابر رومانی در بازی دوم، ین احتمال وجود داشت که قهرمان جام جهانی در مرحله گروهی از جام ملت های اروپا خداحافظی کند.

اگر رومانی هلند را شکست می داد، ایتالیا و رفانسه و در هر صورت حذف می شدند و اگر رومانی موفق به شکست دادن هلند نمی شد، هر کدام از دو تیم ایتالیا و فرانسه که دیگری را شکست می داد به دور بعد صعود می کرد.

اما حوادث در بازی های سه شنبه شب به ویژه بازی ایتالیا - فرانسه به نحوی پیش رفت که ایتالیا یک بار دیگر علی رغم شروع نا امید کننده در جام باقی بماند و مثل همیشه یکی از بخت های قهرمانی مسابقات باشد.

اولین حادثه بازی در دقیقه 7 رخ داد که فرانک ریبری، که به عقیده بسیاری از کارشناسان بهترین بازیکن فرانسه است، مصدوم شد و دومنک مربی فرانسه مجبور شد او را تعویض کند و نسری جوان را به جای او به بازی بیاورد.

بعد از آن در دقیقه 24 بازی لوکا تونی، مهاجم ایتالیا که در دقایق اول بازی دو موقعیت خوب گل را از دست داده بود، با دروازه بان فرانسه تک به تک شد اما ابیدال مدافع فرانسه از پشت او را به زمین زد.

لوبوس میشل، داور اسلواک بازی، هم اعلام خطای پنالتی کرد و هم ابیدال را از بازی اخراج کرد تا فرانسه هر چه بدشانسی داشت در 25 دقیقه اول بازی آورده باشد.

آندره پیرلو پشت توپ قرار گرفت و پنالتی را به گل تبدیل کرد.

بعد از این گل دومنک، نسری جوان را در حالی که تنها 17 دقیقه بازی کرده بود از زمین بیرون کشید و بومسانگ را به جای او به زمین آورد.

اما بعد از این گل و اخراج ابیدال، شیرازه تیم فرانسه تا حدودی از هم پاشید و این تیم تا پایان نیمه اول تنها یکی دو موقعیت بدست آورد که آنها هم به گل تبدیل نشدند. ضمن این که ایتالیا هم در همین فاصله، به ویژه در آخرین دقیقه نیمه اول، موقعیت هایی برای گلزنی داشت که واکنش های خوب دروازه بان فرانسه مانع از گلزنی بازیکنان ایتالیایی شد.

فرانسه در ابتدای نیمه دوم کمی منسجم تر به نظر می رسید و تا حدودی بازی را در اختیار داشت.

اما شوت دانیل ده روسی از روی شروع مجددی از فاصله سی متری با برخورد به پای تیری آنری کاملا تغییر جهت داد و داخل دروازه جای گرفت تا امید فرانسه ده نفره برای جبران گل خورده نا امید شود.

سی دقیقه پایانی بازی نیز با حمله های پراکنده دو تیم گذشت تا سرانجام با توجه به پیروزی هلند بر رومانی ایتالیا به عنوان تیم دوم گروه به دور بعد صعود کند و خود را برای بازی یک چهارم نهایی روز یکشنبه در برابر اسپانیا آماده کند.

البته آندره پیرلو و گنارو گاتوزو، دو هافبک اصلی تیم ایتالیا، با دریافت کارت زرد در این بازی دو کارته شدند و از بازی برابر اسپانیا محروم هستند. نکته ای که می تواند نگرانی روبرتو دونادونی مربی ایتالیا را در پی داشته باشد.

فرانسه، نایب قهرمان جام جهانی 2006 نیز اولین قربانی بزرگ جام ملت های اروپا بود.

بازی هلند و رومانی در حالی آغاز شد که هلندی ها با دو پیروزی 3 بر صفر و 4 بر یک در برابر ایتالیا و فرانسه، قهرمان و نایب قهرمان جهان، هم صعود خود را به عنوان تیم اول به دور بعد مسجل کرده بودند و هم خود را به عنوان بخت اصلی قهرمانی این مسابقات مطرح کرده بودند.

در مقابل رومانی با دو تساوی در برابر فرانسه و ایتالیا برای صعود از گروه به پیروزی در برابر هلند نیاز داشت.

مارکو فان باستن، مربی هلند، با توجه به قطعی بودن سرگروهی هلند تیم خود را با 9 تغییر نسبت به بازی های قبلی به زمین فرستاد تا تماما بازیکنان ذخیره این تیم فرصت بازی کردن در جام ملت ها را پیدا کرده باشند.

Russia beat Sweden in Innsbruck to set up a clash with coach Guus Hiddink's native country the Netherlands in the last eight of Euro 2008.

Andrei Arshavin, playing his first game of the tournament after suspension, inspired a superb attacking display.

He was involved as Aleksandr Anyukov set up Roman Pavlyuchenko for a close-range finish after 24 minutes.

And Arshavin then started and finished a sweeping move to slide home Yuri Zhirkov's pass in the 50th minute.

It was easily the most impressive Russian performance of Euro 2008 and if they reproduce this quality against the counter-attacking style of the Dutch in Basel on Saturday, it will be a mouth-watering clash.

Arshavin was recalled after a two-game ban - and he fully justified his selection by orchestrating a brilliant display of attacking pace and verve by Russia.

Pavlyuchenko almost created a goal for the Zenit St Petersburg star after 14 minutes, but Arshavin could not get a powerful touch on his cross.

And Arshavin then forced Sweden keeper Andreas Isaksson into a back-pedalling save with a cross that threatened to drift over his head as Russia pinned Sweden back.

Zhirkov then fired a volley inches wide before Pavlyuchenko gave Russia a thoroughly-deserved lead in the 24th minute.

Arshavin, predictably, was at the heart of the move with a perfectly weighted pass for Zyryanov, who switched the ball to Aynukov, who set up Pavlyuchenko for a sweeping finish beyond Isaksson.

The last team Holland would have wanted to face in the next round would be one managed by Guus Hiddink

Little had been seen of the dangerous Sweden strike pairing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larsson, but the former Celtic star burst into life after 26 minutes to send a superb header glancing off the bar.

Russia, however, were quick to re-assert their authority and were only denied by the woodwork after Pavlyuchenko left Isaksson helpless with a powerful finish.

Sweden at least showed some attacking intent in the dying moments of the first half, with Mikael Nilsson and Freddie Ljugnberg bringing smart saves from Igor Akinfeev.

It was another moment of mastery from Arshavin that doubled Russia's lead after 50 minutes and clinched a meeting against the Dutch in the last eight.

The little maestro played in Zhirkov and then slid the return pass beyond Isaksson as the pace of Russia's attack once again left Sweden helpless.

Sweden attempted to force their way back into the game, but were leaving themselves open to the rapier thrusts of the Russians.

And they should have been further behind when Zyryanov struck the post with a rising drive and Pavlyuchenko missed an easy chance to add a third.

Arshavin then wasted an opportunity to round off a brilliant individual display with a flourish in the 88th minute when he shot straight at Isaksson's legs when he was clean through.

Spain made it three wins out of three at Euro 2008 as Greece bowed out of the tournament with defeat in Salzburg.

Defending champions Greece took the lead when Angelos Charisteas headed home a Giorgios Karagounis free-kick.

Spain levelled when Ruben De la Red thundered a shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

And the Spanish kept up their 100% record when Daniel Guiza headed in a late winner from a Sergio Garcia cross to continue Greece's misery.

Greece had looked like they might salvage some pride from a disappointing defence of their trophy, but Guiza's goal in the 88th minute means they go home pointless. Euro 2008 quarter-final line-up

Meanwhile Spain will head into their quarter-final against Italy with high hopes of succeeding the Greeks as champions of Europe.

Spanish coach Luis Aragones was even able to give his first-team some extra rest ahead of their meeting with the world champions by leaving out 10 players.

The multiple changes ensured a fairly low-key game at the Stadion Wals-Siezenheim.

Until Greece's goal shortly before half-time, the most notable incident was the combustible Karagounis creating history by becoming the first player to receive six yellow cards at European Championships.

It was the Panathinaikos midfielder's inswinging free-kick that picked out Charisteas on the penalty spot and the big forward produced a wonderful header to beat Pepe Reina on 42 minutes.

But the other side of Karagounis emerged just before half-time when Spain's Andres Iniesta took a tumble in the box.



The Spanish players were furious with English referee Howard Webb for refusing to award them a penalty.

And although the decision looked correct, Karagounis took the brunt when he fell to the ground and had the ball drilled at his head from point-blank range.

The midfielder had to be calmed down by Webb, who was suddenly having a far sterner test than he could have imagined in what was effectively a dead rubber of a game.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was one of the few Spanish players to make a strong case for selection in the knockout stages.


Guiza ensured a miserable ending for the Greeks

He almost caught out Antonis Nikopolidis with a shot from inside his half that just landed the wrong side of the post and led to Greece's keeper, who was playing his last game for his country, colliding with the woodwork.

The upright denied an Alonso blockbuster of a shot from 35 yards in the second half as Spain raised their tempo.

They got back on level terms when De la Red pounced on a Guiza knockdown and drilled in a shot that neither Nikopolidis nor the crossbar could keep out.

Charisteas hit the outside of the post for Greece, but Spain looked the much more likely side to go on and win it.

Guiza and Garcia both shot just wide before the pair combined for Guiza to head his first international goal from close range in the dying stages.

Spain extend their unbeaten run to 19 games and will hope to make that 22 before this tournament is over.

Portugal 2-3 Germany

Germany booked their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2008 by seeing off a below-par Portugal side in Basel.

Bastian Schweinsteiger sidefooted in the first and his free-kick created the second for the head of Miroslav Klose.

Nuno Gomes finished from close range to give Portugal hope, but they failed to defend another Schweinsteiger free-kick and Michael Ballack headed their third.

Portugal substitute Helder Postiga pulled one back in the dying stages but

there was to be no grandstand finish.

Portugal had looked so impressive in qualifying for the knockout stages but Luiz Felipe Scolari's reign ended in disappointing fashion.

Scolari, who takes over as Chelsea boss next month, had suggested their lack of height might be exposed by a physically superior German side.

But it was a failure to defend set-pieces that proved their downfall.

In contrast, Germany gave an accomplished display despite suspended coach Joachim Low having to watch the game from the stands.

They will now face the winners of the Croatia-Turkey quarter-final in the last four and will be strong favourites to progress to the final on this showing.

The selection of Schweinsteiger from the start gave them a spark that was missing from their group games.

He gave them the lead when he got ahead of Paulo Ferreira to burst into the box and steer home a cross from Lukas Podolski, after he had combined well with Ballack down the left channel.

Germany made it two goals in four minutes when Schweinsteiger's curling free-kick was perfect for Klose to head past Ricardo.

It was Cristiano Ronaldo who looked to be the guilty party in allowing Klose a free run at goal.

The Manchester United winger was unable to influence the game and the 2004 finalists' hopes were dealt a further blow when Joao Moutinho was forced off after half an hour.

It was from Ronaldo's shot that led to Gomes' strike, but it owed more to Deco's bursting run from the edge of his own box.

The Barcelona star released Simao and he found Ronaldo, who was denied by Jens Lehmann only for Gomes to show quickness of mind and feet to turn and fire past Christoph Metzelder's attempted clearance.

It was developing into a wonderfully open game, with both sides continuing the theme of the tournament by committing men forward and playing positive football.

Ballack and then Ronaldo went close just before the break and Pepe should have scored with a close-range header from a corner shortly after the interval.

The match looked headed for an intriguing final half hour, only for Portugal's defence to again go to sleep as Schweinsteiger swung in another pinpoint free-kick.

This time it was Ferreira who lost his man, although Ballack did appear to push his Chelsea team-mate before heading past a stranded Ricardo.

Portugal's momentum was stopped in its tracks and they found themselves restricted to long-range shots as Germany looked to close the game out.

Podolski was a yard away from adding to his three goals at the tournament with a hammer of a left-foot shot.

The game got the thrilling climax that it deserved when Nani crossed for fellow substitute Postiga to head in three minutes from the end.

But there was to be no fairytale ending to Scolari's impressive coaching career with the Portuguese.
