Lionel Messi scored twice in the final minutes to give Barcelona an unlikely 2-1 win away to Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League Group C match on Wednesday.

The Argentine equalised in the 87th minute then scored a brilliant chipped winner four minutes into stoppage time after Barca had looked on their way to defeat.

“We already know what Messi is capable of doing,” a happy Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was quoted as saying by Marca.

“Leo does the unexpected and is a very decisive player.”

Barcelona lead the group with six points from two matches. Sporting, who beat Basel 2-0 in Lisbon, are equal with Shakhtar on three points and the Swiss side have none.

Brazilian winger Ilsinho put Shakhtar ahead in the last minute of the first half when he ran on to Gerard Pique’s poor attempt at a headed clearance, slipped between two defenders inside the box and confidently chipped over Victor Valdes.

Shakhtar had the better of the second half but a blunder by goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov in the 87th minute allowed the Spanish giants, who had lacked inspiration or penetration, back into the game.

Young Barcelona substitute forwards Messi and Bojan Krkic, who had come on for Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o, combined for the equaliser. Bojan crossed from deep on the right, Pyatov spilt the ball and Messi pounced to put it in the net.

Eto’o should have equalised shortly after the hour when he was put through by Messi but stumbled as he shaped to finish and placed the ball wide of the near post.

Shakhtar’s Croatian captain Darijo Srna could have put the Ukrainian team two up in the 77th minute but his fierce shot from the right after a corner was parried away by Valdes.

The unimpressive Henry was replaced by Messi in the 60th minute after just one notable attempt at goal, a close shot saved instinctively by Pyatov.

The result will be a huge disappointment for Shakhtar, who started their group campaign with a 2-1 win away to Basel and had beaten Barca 2-0 the previous time the teams met in Donetsk in December 2004. Defeat adds to the woes of the Ukrainian champions who are a lowly 11th in the domestic league.

Didier Drogba was carried off on a stretcher midway through Chelsea’s drab 0-0 draw at Champions League newcomers CFR Cluj on Wednesday.

The Ivory Coast striker injured his knee early in the second half after colliding awkwardly with a defender as he slid in to try and convert a left-wing cross from Florent Malouda.

Few scoring chances were created although Chelsea substitute Nicolas Anelka had a 78th-minute goal ruled out for offside and Eugen Trica hit the outside of the post with a long-range effort for Cluj two minutes later.

Chelsea, last season’s runners-up, and Cluj share top spot in Group A with four points from two matches.

“It was difficult, we did not play well, the players know that, but one point is better than zero,” Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari told Sky Sports television. “A 0-0 draw was not a bad result.

“Cluj were confident, they wanted to prove something. Maybe they will have a problem in their next game because they ran for 95 minutes.”

Scolari was unsure about the extent of Drogba’s injury.

“I know nothing about Drogba. He is with the doctor,” said the Brazilian.

EARLY POSSESSION

The Londoners enjoyed most of the early possession but Cluj, who picked up a surprise 2-1 win at AS Roma in their opening game, looked dangerous on the counter attack.

Chelsea, who launched their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Girondins Bordeaux, seemed temporarily affected by the loss of Drogba as Cluj took a grip early in the second half.

It took Scolari’s team until midway through the second half to force Cluj keeper Eduard Stancioiu into his first save of the match as he stopped a tame long-range effort from Frank Lampard.

Lampard worked the keeper again from 20 metres a few minutes later but Cluj, backed by a vocal home crowd, also created a couple of chances in a late surge.

While Cluj’s executive director Iuliu Muresan said the draw was worth “as much as a victory”, coach Maurizio Trombetta said his players needed to keep their feet on the ground.

“No matter what results we have already obtained, our objective remains third spot,” Trombetta told reporters.

Argentine winger Sebastian Dubarbier was more enthusiastic. “A draw against Chelsea is more important than a victory against Roma,” he said.

Defending champion Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich took big strides toward the next round of the Champions League with easy victories Tuesday. Juventus beat Real Madrid 2-1 on a night of high scoring across Europe.

Dimitar Berbatov had two goals and Wayne Rooney scored for the ninth time in seven games as United outplayed Scottish champion Celtic 3-0. Arsenal won at Fenerbahce 5-2 and Bayern shrugged off its poor play in the Bundesliga with a 3-0 victory over Fiorentina.

United leads Group E on goal difference over Villarreal with seven points. Villarreal downed Aalborg 6-3 on a night when 36 goals were scored in the eight games. Both teams are six points ahead of Celtic and Aalborg, with only two clubs advancing from each group.

Substitute Joseba Llorente scored three goals in 17 minutes for Villarreal, with another of its goals coming from Giuseppe Rossi of Teaneck, N.J.

Arsenal leads Group G, two points ahead of Dynamo Kiev, which won at FC Porto 1-0 and replaced the Portuguese team in second place. Porto is four points behind Arsenal and Fenerbahce six behind.

Bayern beat Fiorentina 3-0 and is two points ahead of Lyon, which won 5-3 at Steaua Bucharest after having been two goals down in the first 11 minutes. Karim Benzema and Fred scored two goals each.

Juventus ended Real Madrid’s perfect start with a victory in Turin helped by Alessandro Del Piero’s 25-yard strike after only five minutes.

The Italian club went to the top of Group H with seven points, while Madrid has six. Both are well clear of BATE Borisov of Belarus (two points) and Zenit St. Petersburg of Russia (one). Those teams played to a 1-1 tie.

The Champions League burst into life on Tuesday with 36 goals in eight matches, including 24 in just three games, to equal a competition record with Villarreal leading the goal fest thanks to a 6-3 victory over AaB Aalborg.

Olympique Lyon beat Steaua Bucharest 5-3 in Romania while Arsenal thrashed Fenerbahce 5-2 in Turkey as the competition equalled a goalscoring record set on Sept. 13 2000.

Manchester United enjoyed a 3-0 win over Celtic at Old Trafford after a second Champions League double in a row from Dimitar Berbatov kept the European champions top of Group E.

Villarreal substitute Joseba Llorente’s hat-trick helped the Spanish side keep pace in the same group as they overwhelmed their Danish opponents having gone behind to an early goal.

Alessandro Del Piero and Amauri gave Juventus a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Group H in Turin where Ruud Van Nistelrooy pulled a goal back for the visitors who could not find an equaliser. Juve are top on seven points with Real just a point behind.

Zenit St Petersburg were held 1-1 by BATE Borisov in Tuesday’s early kickoff in that group, leaving the Russian UEFA Cup holders bottom on one point with their Belarussian opponents also struggling a mere point above them in the standings.

Bayern Munich beat Fiorentina 3-0 to stay top of Group F on seven points, two points ahead of Lyon who overcame Steaua with two goals each from Karim Benzema and substitute Fred. Fiore are third on two points while the Romanians have just one point.

BRILLIANT BERBATOV

Manchester United’s Berbatov pounced on the half-hour and got a second in the 51st minute at Old Trafford before England forward Wayne Rooney wrapped up the win in the 76th with his ninth goal in seven games for club and country.

Manager Alex Ferguson was fulsome in his praise of the Bulgaria striker, who added to his double strike against Aalborg on his Champions League debut for the English champions.

“He was fantastic. It was a marvellous performance again. He’s bringing that composure to the last third of the field and his decision-making and passing are excellent,” he said.

Celtic have now lost 18 of their last 19 away games in the Champions League.

In the other Group E game at the Madrigal, Villarreal triumphed thanks to goals from Giuseppe Rossi and Joan Capdevila in a five-minute spell before Llorente came off the bench to score three times while Robert Pires also netted late on.

“We suffered a lot. These games against supposedly inferior sides are always tough,” Llorente told Canal Plus. “We didn’t play well in the first half but were much improved in the second.”

United and Villarreal are level on seven points after three matches with Celtic trailing with just one point along with Aalborg at the halfway stage in the group.

Arsenal remained in pole position in Group G after their demolition of Fenerbahce in Istanbul ended the Turkish club’s 15-match unbeaten home record in Europe.

Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott scored early on before Abou Diaby, Alexandre Song and Aaron Ramsey wrapped up the win. Mikael Silvestre’s deflected own goal mattered little.

“We came here and tried to dictate the game in a very heated atmosphere. I’m very proud of that,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told a news conference. “Our pace movement and technique made all the difference”.

The English side have seven points, two ahead of Dynamo Kiev who beat Porto 1-0 away. The struggling Portuguese have three points and Fenerbahce just one point after three games.

Manchester United drew 2-2 against Aalborg to finish top of its group in soccer’s Champions League, as Villarreal lost 2-0 at Celtic. Juande Ramos began as Real Madrid coach with a 3-0 win against Zenit St. Petersburg.

Defending champion United will avoid the other seven group winners in the Dec. 19 draw for the last 16 after extending its unbeaten streak in Europe’s elite club competition to a record- tying 19 games.

“We should have won the game, but the good thing is we won the group,” United manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports.

Juventus, Porto and Bayern Munich also topped their groups after today’s matches. Madrid takes runner-up spot in Group H, with Juventus topping the pool following a 0-0 home draw to BATE Borisov. Porto beat Arsenal 2-0 to finish ahead of the Gunners in Group G, while Bayern Munich won 3-2 at Lyon to take Group F.

Dynamo Kiev beat Fenerbahce 1-0 and Fiorentina won 1-0 at Steaua Bucharest in games involving teams that couldn’t advance.

Roma, Panathinaikos, Barcelona and Liverpool are the other group winners. Chelsea, Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon and Atletico Madrid take the remaining last 16 spots.

United had to rally from 2-1 down at half time to avoid defeat against Aalborg and tie the 19-match unbeaten record held by Bayern Munich and Ajax.

Carlos Tevez put United 1-0 up after three minutes when he fired into the corner of the net. The Argentine striker dragged an effort wide two minutes later and Aalborg leveled through a Michael Jakobsen header on 32 minutes.

Danes Ahead

The Danish team, already assured of third spot and a place in the second-tier UEFA Cup, went ahead in first-half injury time as Jeppe Curth angled a header past Tomasz Kuszczak.

United needed seven minutes of the second half to tie the match. Anderson’s pass split the Aalborg defense and Wayne Rooney finished with a low shot.

Villarreal, which played almost an hour with 10 men after a red card for Guillermo Franco, couldn’t capitalize on United’s failure to win as it lost at last-place Celtic. Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady scored first-half goals for Celtic.

In Madrid, two goals from Champions League record-scorer Raul and an Arjen Robben strike gave Ramos a winning start in his new job. The 54-year-old was yesterday appointed until the end of the season after Bernd Schuster was fired.

Madrid’s win wasn’t enough to overhaul Juventus atop the group. Zenit drops into the UEFA Cup, giving the Russian team a chance to defend its title.

‘Not in the game’

Bruno Alves and Lisandro Lopez scored as Porto inflicted Arsenal’s first group stage loss to move ahead of the London club. Roman Eremenko ensured third spot for Dynamo Kiev.

“We were not in the game at any moment,” Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia told Sky Sports. “We didn’t pass the ball well, lost too many balls and this way, you always lose.”

Bayern, needing a win or score draw at Lyon, raced into a three-goal halftime lead with two efforts from Miroslav Klose and a Franck Ribery strike. Sidney Govou and Karim Benzema got goals back for Lyon, though the French team finishes in second spot after failing to score again.

Fiorentina takes the UEFA Cup place, with Alberto Gilardino getting the only goal against 10-man Steaua.

منچستریونایتد مدافع عنوان قهرمانی که در استادیوم اولدترافورد از آلبورگ 2-1 عقب بود، با گل وین رونی بازی را به تساوی کشاند تا "شیاطین سرخ" با یک امتیاز اختلاف نسبت به ویارئال در صدر گروه پنجم به مرحله یک هشتم نهایی صعود کند.

البته صدرنشینی منچستریونایتد بیشتر مدیون سلتیک بود که هرچند به دور بعد راه نیافت اما ویارئال را 2-0 شکست داد.

وین رونی با اشاره به گل زودهنگام کارلوس ته وز، فوروارد آرژانتینی منچستریونایتد گفت: "ما تلاش می کنیم هر بازی خانگی را ببریم بخصوص پس از آنکه در اوایل بازی هم پیش افتاده باشیم در نتیجه از اینکه سه امتیاز بازی را نگرفته ایم ناراضی هستیم."

در گروه هشتم مادرید با خوانده راموس، مربی جدید خود 3-0 زنیت سن پیترزبورگ را شکست داد، اما مهمتر از این پیروزی دو گلی بود که رائول گونزالز کاپیتان و مهاجم رئال به ثمر رساند که شمار گل های او در مسابقات باشگاهی اروپا را به 66 رساند و او را در این عرصه رکورد دار ساخت.

خوانده راموس که تنها یک روز قبل قرارداد سرمربی گری او بطور رسمی اعلام شد، پس از بازی گفت: "مثبت ترین چیز این است که ما با غلبه کامل بازی را بردیم. بهترین موضوع این است که ما به خودمان اعتماد به نفس پیدا کردیم که روز شنبه و در مسابقه مقابل بارسلونا مارا کمک خواهد کرد."


یوونتوس، دیگر تیم این گروه که پیش از آغاز مسابقات گروه مرگ خوانده می شد، در آخرین مسابقه خود در خانه با تساوی بدون گل مقابل باته بوریسوف، قهرمان بلاروس متوقف شد، اما همانند رئال مادرید به دوازدهمین امتیاز خود دست یافت و از آنجا که در دو مسابقه مراحل رفت و برگشت رئال مادرید را شکست داده بود، بعنوان سرگروه راهی یک هشتم نهایی گردید.

در گروه هفتم، پورتو و آرسنال هر دو صعود خود به مرحله بعد را قطعی کرده بودند اما گل های برونو آلوز و لیساندرو لوپز به پورتو که دوبار قهرمان لیگ قهرمانان شده کمک کرد تا صدر نشین این گروه شود و تا اندازه ای از ناراحتی شکست 4-0 در لندن در روز 30 سپتامبر بکاهد.

در گروه ششم نیز بایرن مونیخ در دیداری سرنوشت ساز جهت تعیین سرگروه، در نیمه اول سه گل به لیون زد (میروسلاو کلوزه دو گل و فرانک ریبری یک گل) تا مایکل رنزینگ دروازه بان بایرن در نیمه دوم باقی کار را برعهده بگیرد. هر چند او دوبار تسلیم بازیکنان لیون شد (سیدنی گووو و کریم بنزما) اما توانست با عملکردی چشمگیر مانع به ثمر رسیدن گل سوم شود تا بایرن مونیخ بعنوان تیم اول از گروه خود صعود کند.

به این ترتیب منچستریونایتد، یوونتوس، بارین مونیخ و پورتو به جمع آ اس رم، پاناتینایکوس، بارسلونا و لیورپول، صدرنشینان چهار گروه اول خواهند پیوست و هشت تیم دوم نیز عبارتند از: چلسی، اینترمیلان، اسپورتینگ لیسبون، آتلتیکو مادرید، ویارئال، لیون، آرسنال و رئال مادرید.

هشت تیم سوم گروه ها نیز که راهی جام یوفا خواهند شد شامل بوردو، وردر برمن، شاختار دونتسک، مارسی، آلبورگ، فیورنتینا، دینامو کیف و زنیت سن پیترزبورگ (مدافع عنوان قهرمانی) می شوند.

بر اساس قوانین لیگ قهرمانان اروپا، صدر نشینان گروه ها، تیم هایی که در مرحله مقدماتی در یک گروه بوده اند، یا تیم هایی که به یک کشور تعلق دارند در مرحله یک هشتم نهایی با یکدیگر روبرو نخواهند شد.

با این حال در روز 19 دسامبر که قرعه کشی مرحله بعد این مساقات انجام می شود، احتمال ایجاد شرایط نبردهایی جذاب وجود دارد که از میان این احتمالات می توان به رویارویی منچستریونایتد و رئال مادرید، بارسلونا-چلسی، لیورپول-اینترمیلان، بایرن مونیخ-آرسنال و یوونتوس-لیون اشاره کرد.
