The five British clubs in the Champions League were handed favourable draws for the group stage.

Last season's finalists Manchester United take on CSKA Moscow, Besiktas and Wolfsburg in Group B.

Liverpool face Lyon, Fiorentina and Debrecen while Chelsea play Porto, Atletico Madrid and APOEL Nicosia.

Arsenal have been drawn against AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos and Standard Liege and Rangers will play Sevilla, Stuttgart and Unirea Urziceni.

The eight group winners plus the runners-up go through to the knockout stages of the competition, while the teams finishing third go into the Europa League.

Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium will stage the Champions League final on Saturday, 22 May 2010.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Rangers will all discover their fate for the group stages of the Champions League today when the draw is made at 17:00 BST.

A total of 32 clubs from Europe will be drawn into eight groups labelled A to H, with four teams from the four separate pots (1 to 4) making up each group.

The two teams that finish first and second when the group stages come to an end in December will progress to the knock-out rounds, while the third-placed team will go into the Europa League.

All of the English clubs have been put together in Pot One, which means they will not face one another in the group stage of the competition.

The English clubs will also avoid European champions Barcelona, Italian giants AC Milan, La Liga's Sevilla and European heavyweights Bayern Munich, as these four clubs are also in Pot One.

Instead, their attentions will be turned to the competition in Pot Two.

All will be hoping to avoid the summer's biggest spenders Real Madrid, who now boast the likes of Kaka, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo in their new-look squad.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan and Scottish champions Rangers are also in Pot Two along with Juventus, Lyon, CSKA Moscow, Porto and AZ Alkmaar.

Pot Three contains several clubs sure to offer a stern test to each of the Premier League teams, with Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, Olympiakos, Marseille, Dynamo Kiev, Stuttgart, Bordeaux and Besiktas will all be hoping to progress to the knock-out rounds from Pot Three.

Finally, in Pot Four, eight sides who will be hoping to spring a few surprises in this year's competition.

Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg find themselves placed in the fourth pot alongside Debrecen, Standard Liege, Maccabi Haifa, FC Zurich, Rubin Kazan, APOEL Nicosia and Unirea Urziceni – a Romanian side managed by former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu.

The competition's group stages will get underway on September 15th and 16th.

The draw takes place a day before the Uefa European Super Cup match between Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk in Monaco.

Uefa's Club Football Awards will also be announced this evening. Several Premier League players are in contention for the various awards while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to go head-to-head for the Uefa Club Footballer of the Year accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a successful Champions League debut for Real Madrid, scoring twice Wednesday night in a 5-2 victory at Zurich.

“I never feel pressure,” Ronaldo said. “I just work to score goals. I scored two and I’m really pleased for that, but the important thing is to win games.”

Manchester United, his former team, won its opener 1-0 at Besiktas, and AC Milan gained a 2-1 victory in heavy rain at Olympique Marseille.

The reigning FIFA player of the year, Ronaldo scored on free kicks in the 27th and 89th minutes of the Group C match, with the second going in off goalkeeper Johnny Leoni, who tried to clear it with a punch. Real Madrid, a nine-time champion, also got goals from Raul Gonzalez in the 34th, Gonzalo Higuain in first-half injury time and Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez in second-half injury time.

“We must not lose concentration,” Real Madrid coach Manuel Pelligrini said. “There are always things to improve on but I’m happy we scored five goals.”

Xavier Margairaz converted a 64th-minute penalty kick for Zurich, which also got a goal on Silvan Aegerter’s header one minute later.

“Real was for sure a little bit in fear of us. At 3-2 anything is possible,” Leoni said. “If they want to win the Champions League they will have to play better.”

At a Group B match in Istanbul, Paul Scholes scored with 13 minutes remaining for Manchester United, the 2008 champion.

“It was difficult,” United captain Gary Neville said. “They create an atmosphere over here like no other country.”

At Marseille, Filippo Inzaghi scored for AC Milan in the 28th and 74th minutes of the Group C encounter. Gabriel Heinze headed in Marseille’s goal in the 49th.

“Tonight we saw the difference between a good French league team and a very big team in Europe,” Marseille defender Souleymane Diawara said.

Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Maccabi Haifa as Thomas Muller scored twice and Daniel Van Buyten once. Vincenzo Iaquinta scored for Juventus, but Jaroslav Plasil got the equalizer for visiting Bordeaux in a 1-1 tie in the other Group A match.

Chelsea beat visiting Porto 1-0 on a goal by Nicolas Anelka in Group D, and Atletico Madrid was held to a 0-0 tie at home by APOEL Nicosia. Chelsea captain John Terry went down after Bruno Alves’ elbow crashed into his face while they went for a ball in the air. Terry was knocked out for 10 seconds, but recovered to finish the match.

“I went out for a little bit, but managed to come ‘round,” Terry said. “It’s a little bit sore still.”

Wolfsburg won 3-0 at home against CSKA Moscow in Group B on three goals by Grafite.

The remaining opening matches are scheduled for Wednesday, with defending champion Barcelona at Inter Milan, Liverpool hosting Debrecen and Arsenal at Standard Liege.
