Diego Maradona will remain in the hospital for at least two more weeks while he recovers from an illness caused by excessive eating, smoking and drinking.

The soccer hero's personal physician, Alfred Cahe, told radio Mitre on Monday that he at first feared Maradona was suffering from pancreatitis but it turned out to be alcoholic hepatitis.

"The type of acute hepatitis he has is a case related to alcoholism," Cahe said. "The hospitalization will last no less than 15 days."

Maradona, 47, was taken by ambulance last Wednesday to a Buenos Aires sanatorium, where he has undergone treatment for withdrawal symptoms.

His life was not reported in danger, and doctors say his latest health problems are not as serious as in 2000 and 2004, when he was hospitalized near death for problems associated with cocaine addiction.

Cahe also noted "an improvement" in the health of Maradona, considered one of soccer's greatest players along with Brazil's Pele.

Revered throughout Argentina, Maradona led his country to the 1986 World Cup title and the final in 1990. But he later struggled with drug addiction and obesity, and in 2005 had gastric bypass surgery.

Diego Maradona showed marked signs of improvement Thursday from an acute hepatitis condition blamed on alcohol abuse.

"We are seeing the clinical improvements are ever more evident in this case of acute, toxic hepatitis," said Hector Pezzella, director of the private Guemes Sanatorium where Maradona is being treated.

The doctor, speaking at a news conference late Thursday, said Maradona also was in better spirits but wouldn't say when he expected the soccer great to be released. Thursday was his eighth day at the hospital.

"He is aware that his hospitalization is the best thing for him and he wants to be rehabilitated quickly," Pezzella added.

Earlier in the week, Maradona's personal physician had said the soccer great had shouted at him and demanded to leave the clinic where he was being treated for health problems blamed on alcohol abuse, overeating and smoking.

"He shouted at me three or four times and told me, `Sign the papers and get me out of here,"' Alfredo Cahe told Argentine station America TV in an interview broadcast late Tuesday.

Maradona was released from a private clinic Wednesday, after two weeks of treatment for acute hepatitis brought on by alcohol abuse.

Doctors gave the 47-year-old Maradona a stern warning: no more drinking or eating big meals. He was taken to the Buenos Aires clinic March 28 suffering from what his doctor said was too much alcohol, too much food and too many cigars.

Maradona, who has battled weight and drug problems and had gastric bypass surgery in 2005, said he's listening.

"I'm going to follow the instructions of my doctors to the letter," Maradona told Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports. "If I don't do it, the only one who will be hurt is me ... I'm going to complete my treatment."

What comes next for Maradona, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in Mexico in 1986, is unclear.

His personal doctor, Alfredo Cahe, said Maradona is surrounded by a team of doctors, nutritionists and specialists. He also said he hoped to send the soccer legend to Switzerland for follow-up treatment.

Not right away, though.

Maradona said he has a can't-miss date Sunday to see Argentina's biggest soccer match of the season: the annual clash between his former team, Boca Juniors, and its archrival River Plate.

"I'll go to the match ... even by ambulance if I have to," he said.

Doctors at the Los Arcos Sanatorium said the 47-year-old Maradona was being treated by a team of doctors, psychiatrists and nutritionists.

Diego Maradona showed signs of improvement Monday, four days after being hospitalized for abdominal pains, though doctors said some lab tests came back with abnormal results.

A brief statement issued by the Los Arcos Sanatorium where Maradona was taken Friday said "the tendency is toward recovery" but did not specify what lab tests were conducted or just what was ailing the former soccer star.

The statement was the first since a medical bulletin on Saturday indicated the 46-year-old former World Cup captain was in stable condition at the private clinic in downtown Buenos Aires.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup and is considered one of the all-time greats of the sport, was hospitalized Friday -- only two days after he was released following a two-week stay at another private clinic.

He spent March 28-April 11 at the private Guemes Sanatorium in the Argentine capital where he was treated for acute hepatitis, an inflammation brought about by alcohol abuse, doctors said.

At the time, his private physician, Alfredo Cahe, said Maradona was suffering the effects of too much drinking, excessive eating and smoking.

Although Los Arcos has not yet commented on the underlying condition, prominent Argentine daily La Nacion quoted Cahe as saying the former athlete suffered a complication from his hepatitis.

Test results for the liver condition "shot up again and that's not good," Cahe was quoted as telling La Nacion.

But when asked by the newspaper if Maradona had ingested alcohol after last Wednesday's release from the Guemes Sanatorium, Cahe was quoted as saying "no, he didn't consume alcohol ... we are still investigating the cause but can't be sure yet just what happened."

Cahe made no public comments Friday on Maradona's health and neither confirmed nor denied the La Nacion report.

Los Arcos said Saturday that Maradona was being treated by a team of doctors, nutritionists and psychologists. He was rushed to the clinic by ambulance Friday after five hours at a public hospital near his suburban home.

Monday's clinic statement said the "goal of the team support" was to prepare the patient and his relatives for his "continued treatment once he is released."

The hospitalization was the eighth for Maradona in 10 years. He was near death during emergency hospitalizations in 2000 and again in 2004 when he was treated for health complications blamed on a past cocaine addiction his doctors said he later surmounted.

"Diego is being kept hospitalised because of the hepatitis and will remain a few more days until the (liver) tests ... are completely normal," Cahe said.

Maradona's hospital stay is his second in less than a month.

Maradona was taken to another Buenos Aires clinic on March 28, hospitalised for 13 days when doctors first reported the hepatitis they blamed on alcohol abuse.

After his release from the private Guemes clinic last week, Maradona spent less than 72 hours on the outside before he returned to the emergency room complaining of strong abdominal pains on Friday.
