Iranian veteran striker Ali Daei has once again silenced his critics with a display of awesome power on the pitch for his club and country, in the last three weeks Daei has scored for Iran against Chinese Taipei in the Asian Cup 2007 qualifier, scored against world cup 2006 finalists Costa Rica in a warm-up match, scored for his club Saba Battery twice against Al Gharafa of Qatar in the Asian Champions League with two stunning long range efforts from outside the penalty area before settling back into the Iranian Premier League with a late winner against Shamoushak last Sunday, business as usual for Daei who will celebrate his 37 th birthday on March 21 st only hours into the Iranian New Year.

Daei with 109 international goals for Iran under his belt has once again come under criticism from some fans and media. After every single game Team Melli play Ivankovic comes under attack from some fans and media for not dropping Daei from the team or for not substituting him. Whilst I agree no player should be guaranteed a first team place let alone playing the full ninety I wonder on what basis a player who does his job effectively should be dropped from the team! One also wonders about accusations made against Ivankovic for not having the authority to drop Daei from Team Melli!

In Team Melli's recent match against Chinese Taipei we saw both Akbarpour and Khatibi tested with Akbarpour missing several clear cut chances against a weak opponent, Khatibi showed potential but did not seem to like letting go of the ball and was consequently dispossessed several times. At this level playing for the national side weeks away from participating in the world cup a new player might only get one chance to prove himself.

I recall Esteghlal striker and IPL top scorer Gholamreza Enayati getting his chance to shine in Team Melli against Macedonia last November in the Tehran Cup. Enayati came on for Iran in the second half with Iran trailing 1-2, he was gifted a golden opportunity to score and bring Iran level in the match courtesy of an excellent Mahdavikia pass but Enayati missed and failed to score, Enayati buries such opportunities in IPL no questions asked but he missed the one that mattered to perhaps secure his place in the national side, we have not seen Enayati in Team Melli ever since. At this level you might only get one chance to shine.

Vahid Hashemian had no problems returning to the national side and securing his first team place after a three year self imposed exile. He played a crucial role in Iran's 0-2 away win against Jordan in the world cup 2006 qualifier. Competition for a place in the team is fierce at this level, Hashemian only needed one chance to show his worth, I think we should look at the both sides of the coin, maybe Daei's presence in Team Melli has nothing to do with Branko's lack of authority to remove him, maybe the strikers who have had the chance to topple Daei have failed to shine when it mattered leaving Branko with no choice but to select the best all-round players he has available to him up front.

Top goal scorer of the Iranian National Team in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995.

            Biography
            Early Years:

Born in Ardebil, in 1969, Ali Daei started his love affair with soccer by playing for home team Esteghlal Ardebil at the age of 19. He missed a chance to play in the J-League due to mandatory military service. After playing for minor league teams such as Taxirani and Bank Tejarat, he joined one of the Iran's greatest teams Persepolis (Pirouzi). There he played for two years before he was noticed by the big leagues.

            The Big Leagues:

Daei ventured out of Iran for the first time when he signed on with Germany's Bundesliga. From 1997 to 1998 he played for Arminia Bielefeld. In 1998 he moved to Bayern Munich, where his reported salary skyrocketed to a cool 4 million DM. Daei, who was handpicked for the German team by legendary football player Franz Beckenbauer, was regarded as a world-class center-forward. After a successful career and much fame and fanfare followings in Germany, Daei decided to move to Hertha BSC. This occured before the end of his three year contract with Bayern but was after the team had won the 1999 Bundesliga. Daei played in the Champions League with Hertha Berlin and gained the title of best scorer in the league with 3 goals.

Daei has had a very successful career in international competition, scoring in almost every game he played. He made many new records and played in World Teams in friendly continental games. Even with all his success, Ali Daei was unable to maintain a stable position in the starting line-up. He was not very happy about this, even though offers poured in for him from teams such as Rapid Vienna, Glasgow Rangers, the J-League and a few English Premiership teams. Despite the offers, Daei decided to join the U.A.E league at 34 years of age, signing a contract with Al-Shabab.

Daie is known as a gentleman among all his fans and his fame is attributed mostly to his impressive goal scoring. Due to Iran's tournament schedule, he has played very few matches for his team but he has scored frequently. Without a doubt, Ali Daei remains one of the greatest strikers in the history of football and is ranked second in most goals in international matches. In the 1998 World Cup Qualifying round, he scored 38 goals in 56 matches. There were the his famous 4 goals against Korea and 8 goals against the Maldives. Daei was named the world's top scorer in official international competitions by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), having scored 20 goals for Iran in 1996. On December 2, 2003, he scored his 85th international goal in a match against Kuwait, elevating him past Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas to top the all-time list of scorers in international matches.

Leading the Team Melli in this year's World Cup Games, Ali Daei will be a force to reckon with. Already at the top of list with 4 goals in the Asia Zone, Daei hopes to make it to the World Cups this year as Captain, with many fans to back him up. Off the field, Daei does not seem to get enough football. He owns his own football jersey manufacturing company. They make jerseys for Iranian Premiership clubs, and for the Team Melli. Daei is also very generous and has made very significant charitable donations to various causes.

            Famous Daei Matches:

            - 1998 World Cup Match - Iran vs. USA - Daei play an average game. Iran wins.

Grounds 'too rowdy' for Iran women

IRAN captain Ali Daei has hit back at foreign criticism of his country's ban on women entering football stadiums.

Daei, the world's leading international goalscorer, said overnight the ban is an internal matter which should be decided by the people of Iran.

"Every country has its own rules and culture. The United States is different from Iran, we have our own beliefs," said the 37-year-old veteran.

"Currently with the atmosphere in the stadiums, I don't want my wife to be there."

Daei, the first player to reach 100 international goals, said he would prefer to scrap the rule but football grounds are too rowdy for women.

"I personally think they should relax this ban so women can go to stadiums but, considering the atmosphere in stadiums and the respect we have for women, it might not be appropriate at this time," he said.

"There's no danger at all but there are a lot of bad things being chanted and there's a lot of shouting at each other and we have respect for women, we don't want them to see that."

Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, made a surprise announcement in April that the ban would be lifted, but the order was vetoed by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Daei said "negative advertising" has created a misleading view of the Islamic country in the West.

"It's as big as the distance between here and sky," he said, when asked about the difference between perceptions of Iran and reality.
"Ninety-nine percent of what you hear is wrong and negative advertising."

Iran has become increasingly isolated over its nuclear program and President Ahmadinejad's controversial views on the Holocaust, with the political fall-out swirling around the team here.

Daei is hoping to add to his international tally of 109 goals as Iran takes on Mexico, Angola and Portugal in Group D.
