The UEFA Champions League final clash between Spanish La Liga champions Barcelona and English giants Arsenal at the Stade de France in Paris might not have matched last season's final in terms of goals, but it will surely go down in history as one of the most memorable matches that left fans at the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

Arsenal started off the match on a more positive side, brandishing their trademark brand of slick passing and fast attacking football, asking questions of Barcelona's defense. Arsenal's captain, Thierry Henry, in particular, looked fired up and was playing with real purpose amid strong rumours that this could be his final appearance for the Gunners before he moved to Barcelona next season.

It only took two minutes before Henry raised the stadium noise levels with a golden chance when he flicked a low cross past defender Rafael Marquez and toe-poked the ball towards goal. But his shot was well-blocked by Victor Valdes, Barcelona's goalkeeper for the night who quickly rushed out of his line. From the resulting corner, Henry once more received the ball and smashed another goal-bound shot that had to be parried out by the diving Valdes.

On the other half of the pitch, Barcelona's Brazilian danger-man and world player of the year Ronaldinho was tightly man-marked, and given little space to maneuver or perform his trickery on the ball. He had to be content with stroking the ball to his teammates as defenders charged towards him each time he had the ball in his possession. The Spanish club's first sniff at goal arrived after eight minutes, when French midfielder Ludovic Giuly won the ball from Arsenal's left-back Ashley Cole down the flank and shot straight towards goalkeeper Jens Lehmann from a tight angle.

A few minutes later, Barcelona was awarded a free-kick, though Ronaldinho could only sail the ball high over the bar.

Drama and controversy then stuck 17 minutes into the game. Barcelona's top scorer Samuel Eto'o was put one-on-one through with Jens Lehmann via a pinpoint Ronaldinho pass. As Lehmann desperately lunged towards Eto'o in an attempt to stop the Cameroonian striker, he clumsily clattered Eto'o down with his hands outside the penalty area. The ball bounced into the path of a completely unmarked Giuly, who gleefully placed it into an empty net. But the referee's whistle had already gone by then, and the goal was not allowed. Play was stopped, and the referee was left with little choice but to show a distraught Lehmann the red card for a professional foul.

Arsenal put on second-choice goalkeeper Manuel Almunia at the expense of Robert Pires, who looked crest-fallen as his Champions League final adventure came to a premature end. Barcelona was given a free-kick right at the edge of the penalty area and this time Ronaldinho curled the ball just wide of the post, leaving them to feel hard done by the referee's decision not to allow Giuly's goal.

The abrupt reduction of Arsenal to 10 men disoriented them for a moment, and things could have gotten worse for them when Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboue shockingly landed his studs into the thigh of Barcelona's Mark Van Bommel in a challenge, but escaped with just a yellow card caution.

From there, it was one-way traffic as Barcelona went on the offensive to finish off the weakened Arsenal team. It took a brilliant last ditch tackle from Cole to prevent Giuly from being put clean through on goal again on 27 minutes, in what was turning out to be a fascinating individual battle between the two players.

To Arsenal's credit, they continued to attack when the opportunities presented, though with only 10 men and having sacrificed one half of their striking duo to make way for Almunia, their greatest likelihood for a goal had to come from set pieces. And it came against the run of play after 36 minutes, when Eboue was judged to have been brought down on the right-hand side outside Barcelona's penalty area during a rare foray upfield, which replays suggested was a dive.

The free kick was beautifully delivered into the six-yard box by Henry, and leaping highest for the ball was English international defender Sol Campbell, who was selected in Arsenal's line-up ahead of Philippe Senderos. Campbell bulleted a header into the corner of the goal with keeper Valdes rooted to the spot, for his first ever Champions League goal.

Barcelona reacted to the unexpected one-goal deficit with greater urgency in attack, and could count themselves unlucky to be behind at half time. One minue into first half injury time, Eto'o turned wonderfully around Campbell in the penalty box, but his shot crashed off the post.

The second half began with a substitution for Barcelona, taking off Edmilson for the more offensive midfielder Andres Iniesta, making their intentions clear. The move almost paid off in the 52nd minute when Iniesta found space and blasted a good shot from just outside the box, which Almunia did well to smother.

Chances continued to come for Barcelona, but Ronaldinho was not at his usual best when it came to free kicks. Eboue had hacked down Ronaldinho near the edge of the penalty area, and this time his free kick could only go as far as the Arsenal defensive wall.

Barcelona had to go for broke, making another offensive substitution with Swedish striker Henrik Larsson coming on for Van Bommel at the 60-minute mark. It was all about Barcelona seeking that important goal, and Arsenal holding on to their slender lead. Two minutes later, another cross into the Arsenal penalty area appeared to hit defender Lauren Toure's arm, but the referee turned down pleas of a penalty from the Barcelona players. While they were still protesting, Arsenal broke with a swift counterattack, and a string of great passes ending with midfielder Aleksander Hleb would have plunged Barcelona into deeper trouble, had Hleb not narrowly missed his shot.

As Barcelona poured players forward, Arsenal found it increasingly easy to hit them on the break. First, Freddie Ljungberg snatched the ball under the nose of Barcelona defender Presas Oleguer and sprinted towards goal, unleashing a shot that Valdes had to tip over the bar. Then in the 69th minute, Henry had an even better opportunity when he beat the Barcelona offside trap and found himself with just the keeper to beat. Normally lethal from those situations, Henry this time failed to kill off the match when he could not direct enough power on the ball and had his attempt saved by Valdes.

Barcelona continued to put in wave after wave of attacks, but they simply could not seem to find any way past Arsenal's rock solid defense that had not conceded a single goal in their past 10 Champions League games. Just as it appeared that Barcelona were chasing a lost cause, everything changed within an amazing space of four minutes.

Fifteen minutes from the end, Barcelona finally got their well-deserved equalizer when Larsson laid off an inch-perfect pass to Eto'o who was tearing down the left with his searing pace, and expertly side-footed a shot past Almunia with hardly any space between the keeper and the goalmouth.

Arsenal, who up to this point had been understandably running down the clock with some time wasting tactics, looked shell-shocked from the lightning goal. They almost seemed lost as to what to do, while Barcelona were suddenly playing with renewed confidence. Then at 80 minutes, Barcelona's substitutions turned out to be inspired ones when Larsson once again was the provider, this time for another substitute Juliano Belletti. From the narrowest of angles, Belletti hit a hopeful shot at Almunia, resulting in the ball deflecting off the goalkeeper's legs and remarkably into the roof of the net, sending Barcelona fans into rapture.

Arsenal threw on striker Jose Antonio Reyes as a final attempt to salvage the situation, but by then, Barcelona were in top gear and visibly buoyed by their sudden lead as the seconds ticked away. When the final whistle sounded through the rainy sky, Barcelona wildly celebrated the club's second European champion triumph, while Arsenal were left to reflect on how the match could have turned out differently if Lehman had not been sent off and they had taken their chances better. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be left ruing his second stumble at the final hurdle in Europe with the club, also having lost the UEFA Cup final in 2000 against Galatasaray. But he and his players can hold their heads high, knowing that they have already gone beyond all expectations in the competition and in last night's performance.
