Fernando Verdasco has advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal in 23 attempts, beating last year's Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

The 14th-seeded Verdasco, who upset Britain's Andy Murray in the fourth round, beat Tsonga 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Tsonga lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2008 title match and was seeded fifth this year.

The 25-year-old Verdasco, a key player in Spain's Davis Cup win, has never advanced past the fourth round at any Grand Slam, and never past the second round at the Australian Open.

نادال برای اولین بار در یک تورنمنت تنیس برگزار شده روز زمین سخت قهرمان شد

رافائل نادال تنیس باز شماره یک جهان با ایجاد مانع در راه راجر فدرر برای دستیابی به رکوردی تاریخی برای اولین بار در گرند اسلم آزاد استرالیا قهرمان شد.

در فینال اولین مسابقه عمده سال 2009، رافائل نادال با غلبه بر خستگی، راجر فدرر را در پنج ست با نتایج 7-5، 3-6، 7-6، 3-6، و 6-2 شکست داد تا نام خود را به عنوان اولین قهرمان اسپانیایی این مسابقات 104 ساله ثبت کند.

اگر فدرر می توانست در این مسابقه پیروز شود شمار مقام های قهرمانی او در مسابقات گرند اسلم به 14 می رسید و با پیت سمپراس رکورد دار در این عرصه برابری می کرد.

فدرر که پس از باختن به نادال در دور سوم تورنمنت تنیس آزاد فرانسه در سال 2005 در 14مسابقه پیاپی فینال گرند اسلم حضور داشته تنها در پنج فینال شکست خورده که همگی مقابل رافائل نادال بوده است.

نادال در شرایطی رویاروی فدرر قرار گرفت که کمتر از 48 ساعت قبل در ماراتنی تاریخی فرناندو ورداسکو را در نیمه نهایی شکست داده بود و بسیاری کارشناسان با توجه به زمان بیشتری که فدرر برای استراحت در اختیار داشت پیروزی نادال را پیش بینی نمی کردند.

فدرر با چشمانی اشکبار و گلویی بغض گرفته جایزه خود را دریافت کرد
اما در دو گیم اول مسابقه دو تنیس باز حریف خود را، در شرایطی که سرویس در اختیار داشت، شکست دادند تا تماشاچیان مطمئن شوند شاهد نبردی یک طرفه نخواهند بود.


نادال که در 18 رویارویی پیشین با فدرر 12 بار او را شکست داده بود، هر چند در ست اول آماده نشان داد، اما از ست دوم به تدریج آثار خستگی در او هویدا گردید.

با این حال توان ذهنی این بازیکن به اندازه ای بود که در ست سوم وقتی کار به تای برک کشید توانست فدرر را مجبور به اشتباه کند و 2-1 از او پیش بیفتد.

هرچند در ست چهارم پیروزی فدرر در سه گیم متوالی اینطور القاء کرد که نادال از استفاده از موقعیت های موجود برای پیروزی چشم پوشی کرده و مفسران تلویزیونی به تدریج تسلیم این فرضیه شدند که نادال شگفتی ایجاد نخواهد کرد، اما در ست پنجم شرایط به کل تغییر کرد.

در ابتدا دو بازیکن در گیم های اول خود که سرویس را در اختیار داشتند با قدرت پیروز شدند، اما پس از پیروزی نادال در گیم سوم، فدرر بر خلاف روند موجود اشتباهاتی عمده را مرتکب شد و به نظر می رسید توان ادامه بازی را به ناگهان از دست داده است.

نتیجه ست نهایی به 4-1 و سپس 5-2 به سود نادال تغییر کرد و در نهایت نادال در گیم هشتم که فدرر سرویس را در اختیار داشت با کمک ادامه روند نزولی ناگهانی فدرر پیروز شد تا پس از چهار ساعت و 23 دقیقه رویاهای فدرر برای پیوستن به تاریخ را نقش بر آب کند.

صبر؛ نشانه بلوغ تکنیکی نادال
در تورنمنت اخیر نادال مجبور شد در شرایطی غیرعادی در طی 48 ساعت بیش از 10 ساعت درزمین تنیس (در مجموع نیمه نهایی و فینال) به مبارزه بپردازد اما یک عامل باعث شد این تجربه به شکستی تلخ برای او مبدل نشود.

این تنیس باز 22 ساله که سال گذشته و در راه قهرمانی در المپیک به 237 هفته پیاپی صدرنشینی فدرر بر رده بندی تنیس بازان مرد جهان خاتمه داد، به وضوح کنترل بیشتری بر روی احساسات خود دارد.

بسیاری از کارشناسان او را آماده ترین تنیس باز حال حاضر جهان می دانند اما آنچه در طی دو مسابقه اخیر او مشاهده شد، عامل "صبر" بود؛ او نه در مقابل ورداسکو و نه مقابل فدرر در مقایسه با حریف توپ های بیشتری را در زمین رقیب نخواباند، اما در هر دو مسابقه، آمار حاکی از اختلاف آشکار تعداد اشتباهات او به نسبت رقیب (به سود نادال) بود.

نادال در مسابقه با فدرر از کنترل ضربات دراپ شات حریف با تجربه تر خود (ضرباتی که با چرخش معکوس جهت حرکت توپ زده می شوند و هدف آنها غافلگیر کردن حریف و کشاندن او به لبه تور است) عاجز بود و فدرر بارها با موفقیت از این سلاح برای غلبه بر نادال استفاده کرد. همچنین نادال مقابل ورداسکو مورد انتقاد شدید کارشناسان قرار گرفت که چرا ریسک حرکت به سمت تور را قبول نکرد و با ماندن درحاشیه خط عرضی زمین (baseline) به ورداسکو اجازه داد بازی را به او دیکته کند.

با این وجود نادال با دوری از ضربات ریسکی و روی آوردن به رالی های طولانی نشانه های بلوغ فنی را از خود به نمایش گذاشت و ثابت کرد که می تواند با کنترل روحیات آتشین خود به انتظار اشتباهات حریفان بماند.

نتیجه این استراتژی به ویژه در ست پنجم فینال آزاد استرالیا مشخص شد که فدرر مرتکب 14 اشتباه شد اما در برابر نادال تنها دو بار با اشتباه به فدرر امتیاز داد.

Rafael Nadal's shock French Open exit at the hands of a player ranked outside the top 20 is already attracting suggestions that it may be the biggest upset in tennis history.

Nadal, the world number one had never lost a game at Roland Garros, winning the previous four titles in a row. However, Sweden's Robin Soderling proved too good for the "King of Clay," beating him 6-2 6-7 6-4 7-6.

The official French Open Web site called it "one of the greatest upsets in Grand Slam history," while other news outlets have rushed to praise the Swede for the "game of his life."

The result leaves the men's draw at the French Open tournament wide open -- with Roger Federer and Andy Murray now the highest-ranked players remaining.

Undoubtedly a massive upset, Nadal's loss also raises the question of what have been the biggest Grand Slam upsets in tennis history. Is this is the biggest?

1. Robin Soderling beats Rafael Nadal, French Open 2009
Spain's clay master was unbeaten at Roland Garros and looking for his fifth title in a row when he was shocked by the 23rd seed Swedish player. Soderling was too good for Nadal, and deserved the win.

2. Michael Chang beats Lendl and Edberg, French Open 1989
American Michael Chang etched his name in history by winning the 1989 French Open aged just 17 years and three months. He beat legends Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg (in an epic five set final) to win the event and he is still the youngest winner of a Grand Slam.

3. George Bastl beats Pete Sampras, Wimbledon 2002
Swiss player Bastl was ranked 145 in the world when he took on the seven-time champion of Wimbledon, Pete Sampras. Bastl, who only got into the tournament as a lucky loser after failing to qualify, beat the American in five sets.

4. Mark Edmondson wins the 1976 Australian Open
The Australian only ever won one Grand Slam event, and he beat defending champion John Newcombe in the final to do it. The most remarkable point however, was that he was ranked 212th in the world when he did it. He remains the lowest-ranked player to win a Grand Slam title.

5. Goran Ivanisevic wins 2001 Wimbledon
Left-handed Ivanisevic had lost the Wimbledon final three times before he finally won it in 2001. The eventual victory was a near-miracle, as he had only entered the tournament as a wild card. Ranked outside the top 100 at the time, he became the lowest-ranked player and only wild card to win Wimbledon.

6. Mats Wilander wins the 1982 French Open
The young Swede shocked the tennis world when at 17 years of age he beat the second, third, fourth and fifth seeds at Roland Garros to win the tournament. He was unseeded for the event.

7. Richard Krajicek beats Pete Sampras, Wimbledon 1996
Krajicek surprised everyone when he became the first Dutchman to win Wimbledon in 1996, but the biggest upset had come when he defeated Pete Sampras in the quarter-final. His win was Sampras' only loss at the grass tournament between 1993 and 2001.

8. Gustavo Kuerten wins the 1997 French Open
It's no surprise that "Guga" was a Roland Garros favorite. When he won the 1997 tournament he was ranked 66th in the world and he beat three former champions along the way. He remains the third-lowest ranked Grand Slam champion.

9. Lleyton Hewitt beats Andre Agassi while ranked #550
The Australian went on to win his first ATP tour title after beating Agassi in the semi-final of the Adelaide International. The win over former world number one Agassi was remarkable given that he was ranked at 550th and only 16 years old.

10. Vladimir Voltchkov makes 2000 Wimbledon semi-final
The Belarussian was ranked 237 when he managed to make it through to the semi-finals of Wimbledon -- becoming the lowest-ranked player to ever make the last four at the London tournament.
