به نظر نميرسيد كه تيمي در جامجهاني 2006 تا اين اندازه بازي ضعيف و تحت فشاري را به نمايش بگذارد. بازيكنان ما حرفي برايگفتن نداشتند و در كل ميتوان گفت كه تيم ملي در دو ديدار خود در جام جهاني به هيچ عنوان نمره قبولي نگرفت.

وي ادامه داد: مربيان ما در اين ديدار مرتكب اشتباهات زيادي شدند. تعويض كريمي پس از دريافت گل تصميمي نادرستي بود. كريمي در اين دقايق تنها بازيكني بود كه ميتوانست بر روي دروازهي حريف موقعيت ايجاد كند. از سوي ديگر بعد از مصدوميت گل محمدي و زماني كه دو گل از حريف عقب هستيم, يك مدافع را به ميدان ميآوريم. بهتر آن بود كه در اين دقايق از يك مهاجم مانند برهاني و يا يك هافبك هجومي استفاده ميكرديم.

عاطف افزود: حضور زندي در نيمهي ميدان نيز چندان قابل توجه به نظر نرسيد. شجاعي در بهترين شرايط خود قرار داشت و حضور او در ميدان قطعا به صلاح تيم ملي بود.

سرمربي سابق استقلال اهواز با بيان اين كه اين بازي يك بازي يك طرفه بود اظهار كرد: به نظر ميرسيد كه تمام تلاش مربيان و بازيكنان تيم ملي صرفا براي كم گل خوردن بود. ما فقط به دنبال بستن روزنههاي موجود بوديم و هيچ تلاشي براي تدارك حمله روي دروازهي پرتغال انجام نداديم. هر چند هافبكهاي ما بسيار جنگنده و دونده بودند؛ اما، هيچگاه پاسهاي عمقي و رو به جلو ارسال نميكردند. ما به همين نتيجه هم راضي بوديم.

عاطف با انتقاد از عملكرد سرمربي تيم ملي به ايسنا گفت: حتي اگر اين تيم بدون مربي هم بازي ميكرد, هيچ اتفاق خاصي نميافتاد. ما 45 دقيقه در نيمهي اول زير فشار حملات گستردهي پرتغال بوديم؛ اما, متاسفانه مربيان ما هيچ تغيير تاكتيكي در تيم ما به وجود نياوردند. آنها تنها نظارهگر حملات بازيكنان پرتغال بودند كه در نهايت برنامهريزي مناسب مربيان حريف شكست ايران را رقم زد.

وي افزود: بالا بودن سطح فوتبال پرتغال بر همگان واضح و روشن است؛ اما, اين موضوع نبايد موجب آن شود كه ما به شكست دو بر صفر مقابل اين تيم راضي شويم. قطعا ما براي تفريح به جامجهاني نرفتهايم و ميتوانستيم همچون كرهي جنوبي و عربستان بازيهاي بهتري را به نمايش بگذاريم. ما نمايندهي خوبي براي آسيا نبوديم, چرا كه برخلاف دو تيم كره جنوبي و عربستان در طول 90 دقيقه بازي خود كاملا اسير حركات حريف بوديم.

هر چند اين بازي را واگذار كرديم؛ اما, بايد گفت كه تيم ملي ايران بسيار خوب و هماهنگ بازي كرد. علمكرد بازيكنان ما همانند نيمهي اول ديدار مقابل مكزيك بود و ميتوان از عملكرد بازيكنان راضي بود.

وي ادامه داد: بايد قبول كنيم كه تيم پرتغال بسيار قدرتمندتر از ماست. پرتغال جزو هشت تيم بزرگ جهان محسوب ميشود. بازيكنان اين تيم همگي عضو باشگاههاي بزرگ جهان بوده و سالهاست كه در سطح اول فوتبال جهان توپ ميزنند. با اين وجود بازيكنان ما در مقابل ستارگان پرتغال بازي قابل قبولي را به نمايش گذاشتند.

ابراهيمي افزود: اگر بازيكنان ما خودباوري بيشتري داشتند و با اعتماد به نفس بيشتري مقابل پرتغال صف آرايي ميكردند، ميتوانستيم نتيجهي بهتري را كسب كنيم. ما چندين موقعيت مناسب گل داشتيم كه اگر مهاجمان ما كمي دقت ميكردند، به گل ميرسيديم.

مربي سابق تيم ملي با اشاره به عملكرد مدافعان و دروازهبان ايران به ايسنا گفت: عملكرد مدافعان و به خصوص ابراهيم ميرزاپور قابل تحسين بود، گلي كه دكو به ثمر رساند بدون شك يكي از زيباترين گلهاي جام جهاني 2006 بود.

ميرزاپور موقعيتهاي بسياري را از مهاجمان حريف گرفت و اجازه نداد كه آنها به راحتي به گل پيروزي دست پيدا كنند. به طور كلي عملكرد خط دفاعي ما در مقايسه با ديدار مكزيك قابل قبولتر بود.

وي در خصوص تعويضهاي برانكو اظهار كرد: تنها اشتباه سرمربي ايران در اين ديدار بيرون آوردن علي كريمي از زمين مسابقه بود. كريمي با حضور خود تا آخرين دقايق اين ديدار ميتوانست با حفظ توپ از فشار مهاجمان حريف بكاهد. به زمين فرستادن رسول خطيبيهم تصميم بسيار درستي بود، چرا كه اين مهاجم سرعتي، ميتوانست با دوندگيهاي خود مدافعان پرتغال را از جريان بازي خارج كند.

ابراهيمي خاطر نشان كرد: نبايد به دليل شكست، مليپوشان را مورد انتقاد غيرمنطقي خود قرار دهيم. سطح فوتبال پرتغال بسيار بالاتر از ايران است و ما بايد اين واقعيت را باور داشته باشيم.

Czech Republic 0-2 Ghana


Ghana threw Group E wide open with victory over the Czech Republic.
Asamoah Gyan fired Ghana ahead after just 70 seconds, finishing superbly to punish Tomas Ujfalusi's mistake.

Ujfalusi was sent off for bringing down Matthew Amoah, but the Czechs had a reprieve as Gyan struck the resulting penalty against the post.

Petr Cech kept Ghana at bay with a string of great saves but the Black Stars sealed victory with a second when Sulley Muntari rounded off a fine move.

The United States earned a vital point as they battled to a 1-1 draw with Italy in a World Cup match with three sending-offs.

The Azzurri looked set to take a step closer to the second round when Alberto Gilardino scored his first goal of the World Cup in the 21st minute.

But the Americans capitalised on some uncharacteristically sloppy Italian defending to equalise four minutes later, with Cristian Zaccardo's poor clearance from Clint Dempsey's cross ending in his own net.

The game took a different turn when Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi was sent off for a clear elbow on Brian McBride, while the Americans had Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Pope dismissed either side of half-time.

Marcello Lippi's men failed to get out of first gear and paid the price for sitting back when they were ahead.

United States were unrecognisable from the shambolic outfit that had been beaten 3-0 by the Czech Republic in the opening match, although the Americans survived several late scares thanks to goalkeeper Kasey Keller's formidable saves from substitute Alessandro Del Piero's efforts.

Bruce Arena's decision to leave out midfielder DaMarcus Beasley and play Clint Dempsey instead proved a good move as the latter proved a nightmare for the Italian defence.

With just four minutes played Francesco Totti was booked for a late challenge on Dempsey as Italy were struggling to hold the United States' advances.

Shortly after, the midfielder curled in an inviting cross which Landon Donovan was unable to reach at the far post.

At the other end, Totti's free-kick towards the box found Fabio Cannavaro, whose header went narrowly wide of the far post.

Reading midfielder Bobby Convey should have given the Stars and Stripes a 16th-minute lead but his close-range effort from Dempsey's cross went off-target.

Two minutes later Dempsey came closest, with his 30-yard strike fizzing inches wide of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon's right post.

Both misses proved costly for the Americans as the Azzurri broke the deadlock seconds later. Andrea Pirlo's free-kick found Gilardino on the box, whose diving header towards the far post beat goalkeeper Keller.

Unlike their opening game, Arena's men hit back just four minutes later with the unfortunate Zaccardo putting into his own net.

De Rossi's sending-off did not appear to hinder the Azzurri as, on the half-hour mark, Luca Toni missed a golden chance to score his first goal of the tournament.

Pirlo's assist found an unmarked Toni, whose left-footed effort towards the far post went wide of the target.

Lippi made his first substitution in the 34th minute, with Gennaro Gattuso replacing a nervous Totti.

The Americans twice had the opportunity to take the lead before half-time, with Mastroeni's strike from the distance going narrowly over the crossbar and Reyna's effort from the edge of the area going wide.

Referee Jorge Larrionda showed the second red card of the game to Mastroeni for a harsh tackle on Pirlo.

Italy looked more lively after the re-start and they got a helping hand after Pope was shown the way to the changing room for a second bookable offence after a foul on Gilardino.

Pirlo almost made the Americans immediately pay with his curled free-kick going high over the crossbar.

USA were lucky not to go behind in the 53rd minute with Bocanegra's headed clearance from Pirlo's free-kick striking the crossbar.

Lippi made his second substitution two minutes later, with striker Del Piero replacing Zaccardo.

Italy wasted a good chance with Zambrotta getting the ball in the danger zone but no-one was there to get on the end.

The Americans continued to battle and Reyna picked up the ball in midfield and from 30 yards out fired wide.

Seconds later Simone Perrota wasted another opportunity with his close-range effort going high. On the hour Vincenzo Iaquinta took Toni's place in attack as Italy desperately looked for the winner.

But the Azzurri still looked fragile in defence and were lucky McBride failed to find a good finishing touch from Donovan's assist.

In the 65th minute Beasley, who had entered the pitch two minutes earlier had a goal disallowed for a clear offside.

Zambrotta almost put the Azzurri back in front but his right-footed volley went inches wide of Keller's left post.

Keller denied Italy's second with a superb save after Del Piero's first touch from Pirlo's wonderful assist, the Italian producing a stinging drive which the goalkeeper palmed away.

With four minutes remaining Iaquinta failed to find the target from close-range from Del Piero's deadly cross.

But time ran out for Italy as USA held on for a crucial point.

Japan 0-0 Croatia

A penalty save from Japan's Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi denied Croatia victory, with a goalless draw not doing much to help either side's hopes of progression.
Goalkeeper Kawaguchi palmed away Darijo Srna's spot-kick after Dado Prso was fouled by defender Tsuneyasu Miyamoto in the first half.

Croatia created the best chances, with Niko Kranjcar hitting the bar and Ivan Klasnic forcing Kawaguchi to parry.

Atsushi Yanagisawa came closest for Japan but scuffed wide from four yards.

Croatia will be happier with the point with Australia to come next, while Japan face the awesome task of having to beat Brazil to stand a chance of qualifying from Group F.

After 21 minutes of drudgery, the match sprung to life courtesy of a penalty awarded to Croatia.

Tsuneyasu Miyamoto clumsy challenge on Prso virtually ensured the Japan defender will not be named in the end-of-tournament XI.

Srna stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his near-perfect effort was spectacularly saved by Kawaguchi low down to his left.
Croatia did not seem too disheartened after wasting their golden opportunity, with Kranjcar and Klasnic causing serious problems for the Japanese defence.

Both came close twice, Kranjcar heading into the side-netting and seeing his 30-yarder rebound off the crossbar, while Klasnic scuffed a shot from three yards and had a stinging 20-yard effort saved by the alert Kawaguchi.

Japan were restricted to one clear chance, albeit from distance, with Stipe Pletikosa called on to parry Hidetoshi Nakata's piledriver.

Zico's Japan needed to step up a gear after the break and the introduction of Junichi Inamoto and the industry of Nakata seemed to give his side a lift.

Soon after the restart Yanagisawa missed arguably Japan's best chance, when he mis-hit A***a Kaji's pacy ball from the right.

Nakata stung Pletikosa's palms again from distance and late in the game Alex and then Masashi Oguro failed to connect when the ball flashed across Pletikosa's goal.

هنری ميشل مربی فرانسوی تيم ساحل عاج اعلام کرد که بازی اين تيم مقابل صربستان و مونته نگرو آخرين بازی او در مقام مربی ساحل عاج خواهد بود. ا

و گفت قراردادش با فدراسيون فوتبال ساحل عاج تا پايان جام جهانی بوده و تا اين لحظه اين فدراسيون هيچ صحبتی درباره تمديد قرارداد با او نکرده است.

تيم ساحل عاج بعد از دو شکست ۲-۱ مقابل هلند و آرژانتين از جام جهانی حذف شد.

ابهام در بازی جرارد، لمپارد و کراوچ




سون گوران اريکسون سرمربی تيم انگلستان اعلام کرده که ممکن است در بازی با سوئد استيون جرارد، فرانک لمپارد و پيتر کراوچ را به زمين نفرستد.

هر سه اين بازيکنان يک اخطاره هستند و در صورت اخطار گرفتن در بازی با سوئد بازی يک هشتم نهايی را از دست خواهند داد. اريکسون گفت قاعدتا هر سه اين بازيکنان را بيرون نخواهد گذاشت ولی احتمالا يکی يا دو تا از آنها را روی نيمکت خواهد نشاند.

به احتمال زياد جرارد و کراوچ دو بازيکنی هستند که بازی نمی کنند. در اين ديدار تيم سوئد نيز زلاتان ابراهيموويچ مهاجم خود را به دليل مصدونيت در اختيار ندارد.

بحران در تيم چک

بعد از باخت ۲ بر صفر تيم چک در مقابل غنا، بازی آخر اين تيم مقابل ايتاليا به يک بازی مرگ و زندگی تبديل شده است. اين در حالی است که اين تيم با بحران مصدومان و محرومان مواجه است.

اعتصاب بازيکنان توگو

بازيکنان تيم توگو صبح يکشنبه از ترک هتل محل اقامتشان و سفر به دورتموند، شهری که قرار است ديدار دوم آنها در آن برگزار شود، خودداری کردند.

توگويی ها به عدم پرداخت دستمزدهايشان اعتراض دارند و تهديد کرده اند اگر پولشان داده نشود در بازی دومشان مقابل سوئيس در روز دوشنبه حاضر نخواهند شد.

در روزهای اول جام جهانی نيز اتو فيستر مربی آلمانی تيم توگو اعلام کرده بود که بدليل عدم پرداخت دستمزد بازيکنانش از مقام خود استعفا داده و روی نيمکت نخواهد نشست. البته با پادرميانی های متعدد فيستر تصميمش را پس گرفت.

تيم ملی ايران در دومين بازی خود در هجدهمين دوره بازيهای جام جهانی با نتيجه ۲ بر صفر مغلوب پرتغال شد .
اين باخت اگرچه باعث شد تا ميليونها ايرانی را در ماتم و افسوس فرو برد ، اگرچه پس از اين باخت ديگر جوابی نداشتم تا به خواهرزاده ۱۱ ساله خود بدهم و نمی دانستم چگونه پاسخ محبتهای بی دريغ او را بدهم که پا به پای من فوبتال را تماشا می کرد و به تاسی از من در غم ها و شاديهايم شرکت می کرد . اگرچه برای دايی می تواند برگ برنده ای باشد که صرف حضور خود را عامل شکست يک تيم نداند و انتقادهای ما را به ما به نوعی ديگر پاسخ گويد . اگرچه مادر من و هزاران مادر ديگر که شايد در عمر خود يک مسابقه فوتبال را تا به آخر تماشا نکرده بودند به خاطر ناراحتيها و استرسهای فرزندانشان دست به دعا شدند تا شادی در صورت ما ببينند و هزار اگر های ديگر ...

ما بايد در دنيای واقعی بپذيريم که سطح فوتبال ما تا پرتغال خيلی بيشتر از اين دو گل است .
ما بايد بپذيريم که دنيای فوتبال تفاوتهای زيادی با دنيای سياست دارد که با نقل و اب نبات بتوان فرصتها گرفت و يا از دست داد .
بايد بپذيريم اگر می خواهيم در دنيای فوتبال حرفی برای گفتن داشته باشيم راهی ديگر و طريقی ديگر بايد بجوييم .
ولی با تمام اينها باز هم استثنائات ما را در دو راهی قرار می دهند که مگر آنگولا و يا تيمی مثل غنا و يا اصلا چرا راه دور برويم همين کره جنوبی چه کرده اند و چه می کنند که اينگونه موی دماغ بزرگان می شوند و آنها را گاهی تا مرحله باخت پيش می رانند .
مگر آنگولای ۱۰ نفره سطح و کيفيت و تکنيک بالاتری نسبت به فوتباليستهای ما دارند و ...
و اگر کسی بخواهد واقع بينانه به اين سوالات پاسخ گويد مطمئناً دلايل زير بايد مطرح و پرسيده شود .
اما قبل از آنکه به ابهامات پاسخ گويم به اين نکتخه اذعان دارم که اين حقير نه به دليل باخت به طرح اين حرفها پرداخته ام و نه از آن دسته کسانی هستم که در هر فاجعه ای دنبال کسی می گردم که تمام مشکلات را بر گردن وی بياندازم . که مواردی که در ذيل به آنها خواهم پرداخت از بارزترين مسائلی است که مدتها تيم ملی و فوتبال ايران را آزار می دهد .
از ابتدا شروع می کنم و می گويم کجای دنيا در هفته ای مانده به جام جهانی تازه رئيس فدراسيون و رئيس سازمان تربيت بدنی مشغول تسويه حسابهای شخصی می شوند .
کجا رسم است که آقايان مسئولين که خدا را شکر هريک خود را صاحب نظر هم می دانند چنين به پر و پای هم بپيچند و هر يک سازی جداگانه بنوازند . ( مراسم خداحافظی در آزادی را يادتان هست که بچه ها به دستور رئيس فدراسيون سريعا ورزشگاه را ترک گفتند . )
کجای دنيا و در کدامين دنيای حرفه ای فوتبال بخشنامه ها و دستور العملها برای مطبوعات و صدا وسيما ارسال می شود که انتقاد و بيان اشتباهات ممنوع .
کجا رسم است که مربی يک تيم ملی تنها دو هفته برای بازيکنانش برنامه تدارکاتی داشته باشد و کجا رسم است که تيم های باشگاهی هريک به دليلی مانع از انجام اردوهای بلند مدت شوند .
شما بگوييد اگر به فرض مثال فولاد خوزستان و صبا باتری بدون حضور ميرزاپورها و بختياری زاده و کعبی ها به مسابقات آسيايی می رفت ايا اين نتايج ضعيف را نمی گرفت .
اصلا چرا شما ، بگذاريد مردان تصميم گير فوتبال ايران بگويند که چرا تيم ملی بدون برنامه و هدفی معين تمام روزهای مانده به جام جهانی را از دست داد .
آقايان پاسخ بدهيد چرا کسی به حرفهای پزشک تيم استقلال گوش نکرد که اين وضع تمرين حتما کسان زيادی را به سرنوشت جباری و نيکبخت واحدی دچار خواهد کرد .
چرا کسی نمی گويد به چه دليل مربی محافظه کار ايران که در بازی آخر مقابل بوسنی حضور مطمئن و بی عيب رضا عنايتی را ديد و همه هم می دانستند که او آقای گل ليگ ايران است در ترکيب قرار نداد .
چرا برهانی و خطيبی بايد جايگزين کريمی که صرف حضورش در اين رقابتها می توانست اتفاقات زيادی را رقم بزند می شوند و گل محمدی پر اشتباه و يا هاشميان ضعيف بايد فيکس بازی کنند .
۸ سال پيش ۲ باخت و يک پيروزی و بازيهای خوب تيم ملی باعث شد ايرانيان به خود ببالند و اصلا به ذهن خود هم راه ندهند که چرا ايران به دور بعد صعود نکرد و تازه استقبال درخوری را نيز از بزرگان فوتبال خود به عمل آوردند و خدا به خير بگذراند امسال فرودگاه مهر آباد را ...
۴ سال پيش وقتی ايران به بحرين باخت همه يک صدا طالب يک مربی بزرگ در صدر فوتبال شدند ولی آقای دادکان که روزی دينداری و تيم داری را شعار خود می دانست از ميان کمک مربی همان روزها سر مربی برگزيد و همايون شاهرخی هم همچنان بر سر جای نشست .
آيا اينبار کسی اجازه دارد تا در برنامه های مختلف تلويزيون و در ستونها مختلف صدا و سيما آقايان را به چالش بکشد که فرزندان پارسی فوتبال ايران به کدامين گناه بايد هزينه اشتباهات و سياست کاريهای مردان سياسی فوتبال را بدهند ؟؟؟

France 1-1 South Korea

Iran's hopes of progressing to the second round of the world cup came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to group favourites Portugal. It was always going to be hard for Iran to pull things together after the loss to Mexico but what puzzled me was the tactics used against Portugal!

Iran entered the pitch knowing they had to beat Portugal to have a realistic chance of progressing to the second round, but it was Portugal that pinned Iran back in their half for most of the first half which ended 0-0 with Portugal having 63% of the possession and several scoring opportunities.



After the disappointing result against Mexico as a consequence of weak defending Iran had mainly focused on improving their line of defence and kept things tight in the back.

Much to my surprise Iran started the match with ten of the eleven players that started the game against Mexico with Daei being the only exception. Mirzapour silenced his critics with a magnificent performance in Iran's goal making some of the best saves in the tournament so far; Mirzapour justified Branko's faith in him who gave Mirza another chance to play despite Mirzapour's poor show in the second half against Mexico. There was nothing Mirzapour could have done about the two goals Iran conceded (one a penalty).

There was improvement in Iran's defence, Kaebi was fantastic, Rezaei did well, Nosrati had one of his better games but I believe it was a mistake not to use Sadeghi (as mentioned in my previous article) in place of Golmohammadi who conceded a penalty in the second half. Teymourian and Nekunam did well in half back, Mahdavikia and Madanchi played well in midfield, Hashemian did as well as he could on his own up front but Karimi was less than convincing, Iran had high hopes in Karimi to run at opposition defence and create chances for Iran in the world cup but we didn't see much of that in the first two games, Karimi was substituted after 63 minutes, but replacing Karimi with Zandi was puzzling! Substituting the on form left winger Madanchi who played well against Portugal with striker Khataibi puzzled me also, Khatibi was gifted Iran's two best chances of scoring against Portugal in the second half but failed to score, Borhani and Enayati would have been my first two choices to come on as strikers, I should also have started the match with two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation against Portugal, Hashemian was desperate for support up front throughout the match.

All in all the Iranian players gave it all they had and worked very hard, Kaebi managed to effectively mark two of Europe's top players Figo and Ronaldo, the relief on Portuguese players' faces was evident when an unstoppable Deco shot ended in the back of Iran's net, no keeper on this planet could have stopped that shot.

What puzzled me though was why Iran never took the initiative to attack Portugal as they did against Mexico, playing a defensive game against Portugal was pointless especially when all 3 points were required. The talents of strikers Borhani and Enayati were never used against Portugal, the on form energetic playmaker Shojaee was never used, IPL's best defenders Sadegi and Bakhtiarizadeh were wasted on the bench (Bakhtiarizadeh only came on with 3 minutes of the match left to replace the injured Golmohammadi, Sadeghi was not used).

In my opinion Iran should have used a more attacking posture, three or four new outfield players should have started the match in order to change tactics and wrong foot Portugal, Iran failed to use their strength in attack by focusing on defence. But perhaps it is time to focus on Iran's final match of the world cup against Angola.

Angola of course still have a chance to qualify for the second round if they beat Iran and Mexico lose to Portugal, in that scenario Angola and Mexico would tie on points and their goal difference would settle the second round place between them, Angola will therefore have good reasons to want to beat Iran. On the other hand Iran will be desperate not to go home empty handed and will have their own reasons for wanting to beat Angola, the match between the two underdogs Iran and Angola promises to be an existing one. I hope Ivankovic will give his unused substitutes a chance to play in Iran's last game of the world cup, if given the chance the new faces might make us wonder what the results would have been in the first two games if they had been used.

Watching the World Cup games, I am reminded of the true definition of an old Persian proverb, “sitting ringside and shouting, ‘knock him out!’” Here I am, a retired tennis player -- the only game I competed in -- and with limited understanding of soccer, shouting at the Iran goalkeeper, “Catch the ball, you incompetent -- bee-orzeh!” Indeed, it’s so easy to sit on the sideline and let your imagination score.

With Iran out of the World Cup, my “football fever” will soon subside, because to be honest, I for one watched with more interest as long as Iran had a chance. Waking up early morning on Saturdays and skipping breakfast just to watch those guys lose has taken its toll on many of us. Onward with our daily lives in “The land of the free”, some of us may even find it in our hearts to forgive those guys for this huge letdown.

On the other hand, equally true, we may have let down our team by not being there to cheer them. After all, they were unaware how many sat in our pajamas in front of a TV or crammed into sport bars just to scream Eeeran, Eeeran! Did the Portuguese team enjoy a form of “home advantage” in a stadium that despite being far from home was packed with fans? I can’t imagine the size of the Iranian crowd if not for a visa problem. Indeed many people traveled long distances to attend, but what about the player’s families, best friends and lifetime fans? Anyone who has ever played serious sports can appreciate the profound energy drawn from the presence of one special person.

It is hard to imagine the dismal mood today’s outcome has brought young Iranians around the world, particularly those in the homeland. As a nation typically in search of true heroes, many hoped this would be an opportunity to shine, even regain respect. But now we revert to humiliation, and are once again deemed as the “Axis of Evil.” As for the players, I don’t think even their coach can fathom the depth of their frustration.

Sad as we may feel over our loss, the pride in our team is undeniable, for only we can appreciate their struggle. Most of these young men are not professional athletes, but working men with a family, responsibilities, and daily problems. Each has faced a litany of miseries, but unlike the Mexican player who received warm support and sympathy for the loss of his father, the Iranian players hold their losses within.

Mere observers, viewers focus too hard on the scoreboard and as a result, fail to distinguish the true game heroes. While the media shines the spotlight on the kicker of an easy penalty, it’s common to miss the true champion in the murky background. Team players like Karimi, who despite persistent pain due to severe injury, continue the game to demonstrate moral support to other players who count on him. Or the captain, who refuses to be carried off the field on a gurney for fear it may discourage his team. As for the goalkeeper, no one seems to care how many times he caught that ball, we only recall the two he missed, and we’ll be sure to remember them for the rest of our lives.

I guess in the end, winning is the most important aspect of any game, but let us not forget that it’s not the only focus. I am proud of our children who managed to shelve bloody wars, survive sanctions and shortages, and yet advance to the World Cup. In time, they will gain even more power and someday we shall see them at the top. No doubt, as the football fever subsides, so will the harsh comments. But for those who can’t control their hostility, here’s another good Persian proverb: Gar to behtar meezani, bestan bezan -- If you can play it any better, go ahead, you play!
