    • Barcelona moved two points clear at the top of the table on Saturday after notching a 1-0 win at home to Real Sociedad while title challengers Sevilla beat Real Madrid 2-1 in a highly charged encounter at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Ronaldinho continued his superb run of recent form with his 11th league goal of the season when he steered a clever first-time shot into the far corner 16 minutes after the break to end Sociedad's stubborn resistance.

Sevilla's 100 percent home record looked to be in danger when they fell behind to a wonderfully struck free kick from David Beckham.

But in-form Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute equalised soon after with a sharp finish to join Ronaldinho at the top of the scoring charts on 11 goals.

The UEFA Cup holders then claimed a deserved victory when substitute Ernesto Chevanton hooked a spectacular overhead kick into the bottom corner after a free kick 13 minutes from time.

Barca, who travel to Japan to take part in the Club World Cup on Sunday, lead the table on 33 points from 14 games, Sevilla move up to second on 31, while Real are a further two back on 29.

"We are delighted with the win and an important three points," goalkeeper Victor Valdes told Barca TV. "We are leaders and have now got a great tournament ahead of us."

Sociedad, who had not won at the Nou Camp in 15 years, frustrated Barcelona until the break but Ronaldinho broke the deadlock when he side-footed an angled shot past keeper Claudio Bravo after Ludovic Giuly picked him out with a pass from the right wing.

      NERVOUS FINALE

Barca had to endure a nervous finale, however, when left back Silvinho was dismissed after two quick-fire bookings five minutes before the final whistle.

Valdes produced a stunning one-handed reflex save to tip Gaizka Garitano's header over the bar at the death and preserve the home side's lead.

Sociedad, the only Primera Liga side yet to win a match, remain in deep trouble with six points from 14 games, one above basement side Gimnastic Tarragona who host Levante on Sunday.

Former England captain Beckham put Real ahead against Sevilla when he curled the ball high across the area, over the head of keeper Andres Palop and inside the far top corner from a free kick wide on the left. But Sevilla were back on level terms four minutes later thanks to a fine opportunist finish from Kanoute.

Luis Fabiano slammed a shot against the bar after turning inside Sergio Ramos on the edge of the area and the Mali striker was on hand to snap home on the half volley before the Real defence had time to react.

Ronaldo had a great chance to give Real the lead when he was put in the clear by Ruud van Nistelrooy only to have his final shot smothered by Palop as he burst into the area.

But it was Real who slipped to their third defeat of the season with Uruguayan Chevanton's spectacular winner after Julien Escude had nodded on Daniel Alves's free kick.

      • European champions Barcelona warned on Tuesday that they were deadly serious about creating history by lifting the Club World Cup.

The Catalans are odds-on favourites to go one better than Johan Cruyff's classic Barca side of the early 1990s by returning to Spain with a first world title.

"We haven't had much time to prepare and we still have jetlag," world player of the year Ronaldinho told reporters a day after the team's arrival in Japan for the six-team tournament.

"But make no mistake -- for us this is serious. Barcelona have never won the title of the best team in the world and the players all want to be a part of history."

Barcelona take on Mexico's America in the semi-finals on Thursday after they and South American champions Internacional of Brazil were given first-round byes.

Barca's clash with America may lack the spice of their Champions League clashes with Chelsea over recent seasons but midfielder Xavi said he still expected a competitive game.

        STILL GROGGY

"We still feel a bit groggy with the effects of jetlag. The muscles are still stiff and we're definitely not 100 percent," he said.

"Yes we're supposed to be the favourites but I am sure America will be in better physical condition. They're a dangerous team and it will be a difficult game."

America struggled past South Korea's Chonbuk Motors 1-0 on Monday and are unlikely to pose a serious threat to Barcelona in Yokohama.

Cruyff's Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by Sao Paulo in 1992 in the Club World Cup's forerunner, a one-off encounter between the European and South American champions.

Frank Rijkaard's side are anxious to set the record straight.

"For us it is extremely important to write this new chapter in Barca's history," said captain Carles Puyol. "We don't expect it to be easy but we have come here to win the title."

Internacional are expected to meet Barca in Sunday's final and Ronaldinho played coy when asked what he knew about Inter's 17-year-old wonderkid Pato Alexandre -- or "Alex the Duck".

"I've heard of him," smiled Ronaldinho. "I know about all of Inter's players because they're Brazilian. I've heard he is a big talent with great potential. But I've never seen him play."

        • Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was forced to repeat almost ad nauseam on Saturday that his side were not favourites to win the Club World Cup.

The European champions are odds-on to beat Brazil's Internacional in Sunday's final but Rijkaard insisted his players would not make the mistake of underestimating their opponents.

"You can't say we're the favourites," an almost exasperated Rijkaard told reporters. "We have flown a long way to get here so we want to finish the job properly and win this title.

"But Inter are a great side and we have the utmost respect for them. We will have to play as well as we can to beat them."

Barca are expected to go one better than Johan Cruyff's superb side of the early 1990s by lifting the Club World Cup trophy in Yokohama on Sunday.

Cruyff's Barcelona lost 2-1 to Sao Paulo in 1992 in the Club World Cup's predecessor, a one-off encounter between the European and South American champions.

"We know how important this is to Barcelona," said Rijkaard, whose side demolished Mexico's America 4-0 in the semi-finals.

"It is a massive game. We will have to play with pride and focus on completing the job."

Rijkaard likened his Barca side to the AC Milan team he played for when they won back-to-back Intercontinental Cups in 1989 and 1990.

"I have very fond memories of playing in Japan," said the Dutchman. "Our fans, players and coaching staff had a unique bond and this Barca side has the same togetherness."

Rijkaard was quick, however, to repeat his mantra about paying Inter due respect in the final.

"We're not going out onto the pitch thinking we're going to win this game easily," he said. "Nobody is thinking like that. It is the opposite. We expect a very tough match."

          • Destiny beckons for Barcelona and Internacional

No sooner had the draw for the third FIFA Club World Cup been made than pundits and fans alike began talking of the 'dream final'.

Sure enough, European champions Barcelona and their South American counterparts Internacional safely negotiated their respective semi-final appointments to set up an eagerly anticipated summit meeting in Yokohama on Sunday.

As if expectation levels were not high enough, Barca added a little extra spice to an already appetising final by turning on the style against Club America in a scintillating semi-final display.

However much Rijkaard and his men try to play down their championship chances, the fact is that their 4-0 victory over the Mexicans, the biggest in the tournament's short history, has only served to confirm their status as favourites.

That said, it would foolish to write off the Porto Alegre side's chances. Although their showing against Al-Ahly was solid rather than spectacular, Abel Braga's men have more than enough firepower at their disposal to become the third Brazilian team to hoist the trophy aloft.

            'We can play better'
Frank Rijkaard and Ronaldinho may have played down Barcelona's chances before Thursday's clinical demolition job, but no one seems to be taking them too seriously.

"Good grief," exclaimed one Mexican journalist good-humouredly after the final whistle had blown. "If that's how they play when they're not favourites, just imagine how many they'll score when they actually are." One can only imagine what our correspondent must have thought when the Barca camp told the world afterwards that there is room for improvement.

"We've produced better performances than that both in the league and the Champions League," said Ronaldinho. "And we'll need to hit that kind of form again if we want to beat Inter." A product of the youth academy of Internacional's deadly rivals Gremio, 'Ronnie' will not be lacking in motivation when he steps on to the pitch on Sunday. The Brazilian wizard was keen to play down the connection, though. "The game against Inter is special because it's the final of a tournament Barcelona have never won, not because I used to play for Gremio," he commented.

Midfield partner-in-crime Deco is another one who believes the Catalan giants can shift up a gear or two. "I reckon we can pick up our game a little more and it would be great to do that against Inter," the Portuguese livewire told FIFA.com. "That doesn't make us firmer favourites though. Sunday's a final and in finals there are no favourites."

Rijkaard is approaching the showdown with relish. "There are certain things we can improve on, such as our concentration levels," explained the Blaugrana coach. "What's more, our opponents have spent more time here in Japan and that gives them a slight advantage going into the game. I don't fear them, though, anything but. I'm really looking forward to facing them. They're South American champions, they've got some quality players and they come from a country with an unparalleled footballing tradition. I'm sure it's going to be a great game for the fans."

History would seem to be on the Dutchman's side. It was 17 y ears ago to the day on Sunday that he won his first Intercontinental Cup as a member of the AC Milan side that defeated Atletico Nacional of Colombia 1-0. He picked up his second winners' medal the following year when the Italians overcame Olimpia of Paraguay 3-0 to retain the trophy. Should his charges see off Inter tomorrow, he would become the first European to win the coveted trophy as both a player and coach, and only the third person in the tournament's history after the Uruguayans Luis Cubilla and Juan Mujica. What everyone wants to know is: can Inter stop him?

Despite their admiration for the Spaniards' five-star showing against America, the Inter squad believe they can stop them in their tracks, goalkeeper Clemer among them.

"Every game is different," he commented. "Barca are one of the best sides in the world and naturally we respect them, but only up to a certain point. We're not going to change the way we play, and when we've got the ball we're going to attack them because you can't win by just sitting back and defending. Let me tell you, we haven't come here on holiday. We're here to win the title."

The question is, just how are Inter going to go about that? "Barcelona won't have it as easy as they did against America," vowed coach Abel Braga. "We'll be giving it all we've got. We'll be staying very close to Ronaldinho and we can't give him any space to play in. Then it's a question of attacking them."

Skipper Fernandao expanded on his side's tactics for the big game. "You can't let them play the ball out from defence and dominate possession," he explained. "If you force them to bring the keeper into play then you can get amongst them. That's where we can get some joy." The striker is not just thinking about Barcelona, however. "We got through our opening game unscathed and we'll be little more relaxed now. I just hope they believe that the Al Ahly performance was the best we can do," he added.

Midfield man Edinho also had some interesting tactical observations to make: "We have to stop them moving the ball around quickly. We need to get hold of the ball as much as we can and not give away possession in the midfield, because if we do then our strikers will be feeding off scraps. It also goes without saying that we need to take our chances. America didn't, and look what happened."

The time for talking is nearly over and the dream final, to be played in front of a capacity 70,000 crowd, is almost upon us. Can Barcelona reach perfection? Can Inter thwart the much-vaunted Catalan attack and exert some attacking pressure of their own? All will be revealed tomorrow.

                • Barcelona wasted a chance to go top of the Primera Liga by slumping to a 3-1 defeat at city rivals Espanyol on Saturday.

Luis Garcia put Espanyol ahead in the 31st minute and, although substitute Javier Saviola levelled early in the second half, Barca were always on the rack.

Raul Tamudo headed the home side back in front after 65 minutes and Francisco Rufete made it three near the end after his team mates had missed a host of opportunities to add to the score.

"It is a wake-up call for us," coach Frank Rijkaard told reporters after Barca extended their sequence to three league matches without a win.

Rijkaard's team remain second on 35 points, two adrift of leaders Sevilla who host struggling Real Mallorca on Sunday.

Earlier, in-form Valencia climbed to third on 33 points with a 3-0 win over local rivals Levante.

Portuguese midfielder Hugo Viana put Valencia on course for their fifth successive victory with a low shot from outside the area in the 52nd minute.

                  FAR POST

Four minutes later striker Fernando Morientes swept home David Silva's miscued cross-shot at the far post and 10 minutes from time Argentine defender Roberto Ayala headed the third from a free kick.

Barcelona dominated possession in a typically frantic opening against Espanyol and had the first clear chance when Ronaldinho's dipping free kick was tipped on to the crossbar by Carlos Kameni.

But the home side's rapid counter-attacks constantly unsettled Barca.

After 29 minutes playmaker Ivan de la Pena's defence-splitting pass set Rufete through on goal and he forced Victor Valdes into a fingertip save.

Valdes could not stop Luis Garcia a minute later after Tamudo beat Carles Puyol on the left and crossed for the striker to sweep the ball home.

Rijkaard brought Argentine Saviola on at halftime and within 15 minutes he equalised with a jinking run and fierce shot from outside the area.

Espanyol restored their lead when Sergio Garcia crossed from the right for the unmarked Tamudo to stoop and head home from close range.

The hosts then brought on substitute Walter Pandiani, the Uruguayan striker shooting wide in a one-on-one situation and heading against the bar as Barca were run ragged.

In the final minute Luis Garcia led a three-on-one breakaway before crossing for Rufete to score at the far post.
