AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed his side's interest in Real Madrid forward Julio Baptista on Tuesday.

Galliani was photographed with Real sporting director Predrag Mijatovic earlier in the week and media reports said Real were willing to sell the Brazilian if European champions Milan took out-of-favour forward Antonio Cassano as well.

"If Real Madrid accept this offer for Baptista, good, otherwise it won't happen," Galliani told a news conference at the launch of Milan's new home shirt. "I deny that Real have asked us to take Cassano too."

Baptista, who scored in Brazil's Copa America final win over Argentina this month, has struggled at Real and spent last season on loan at Arsenal.

Galliani was quick to play down rumours that the future of Milan playmaker Kaka was also discussed with Mijatovic. Madrid have had several huge bids rejected by Milan.

"Predrag is aware that he can no longer ask me about Kaka. The boy will stay with us for the next four years," he said.

Kaka may soon be joined by another Brazilian after Galliani sent an official to South America to try to secure a deal with Alexandre Pato, who shone for Brazil at the recent Under-20 World Cup in Canada.

Rivals Inter have also expressed an interest in the teenage forward.

"If we succeed with Pato then great, otherwise life goes on," added Galliani, who has been under pressure from fans after failing to add to Milan's squad so far in the close season.

Defending champion AC Milan was given a relatively easy draw for the group stage of the Champions League on Thursday, while Manchester United and Chelsea will revisit quarterfinal rivals.

Milan claimed its seventh European title in May with a 2-1 win over Liverpool. The Italian team is in Group D with Benfica, Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Manchester United will face AS Roma in Group F, along with Sporting and Dynamo Kiev.

Manchester United beat AS Roma 7-1 in the second leg of last season's quarterfinals -- a night which manager Alex Ferguson called his greatest in European soccer.

That series was marred by violence during the first leg, with some Manchester United fans hurt before the game after attacks from Roma fans, and inside the stadium when Italian riot police fought with spectators.

"They were unacceptable scenes. I believe our fans were blameless," United executive David Gill said. "The important thing is to note we will work with UEFA, with Roma, to ensure there is no repeat of that.

"We want our fans, who are fantastic following us around in Europe in their thousands, we want them to be able to go to the game in comfort, in safety."

Manchester United then lost to AC Milan in the semifinals.

Chelsea and Valencia played in another quarterfinal last season, and Chelsea won with a 90th-minute goal from Michael Essien in the second leg. Chelsea lost in the semifinals to Liverpool on penalty kicks.

Joining them in Group B are Schalke and Rosenborg.

FC Barcelona, the 2006 champion, is in Group E with six-time defending French champion Lyon, Stuttgart and Rangers, while five-time champion Liverpool is in Group A alongside 2004 winner FC Porto, Marseille and Besiktas.

Real Madrid was joined in Group C by Werder Bremen, Lazio and Olympiakos, and Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce are in Group G.

Arsenal, a finalist in 2006, has 1986 champion Steaua Bucharest and Slavia Prague in Group H. Slavia Prague beat four-time champion Ajax in qualifying.

They'll be joined by either Sevilla or AEK Athens. The two play the second leg of their series on Monday.

The match was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday, but it was postponed because of the death of Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta and the forest fires in Greece. Sevilla, which has won back-to-back UEFA Cup titles, leads 2-0 and also plays AC Milan in the Super Cup on Friday in Monte Carlo.

Filippo Inzaghi tied the score early in the second half and Marek Jankulovski got the go-ahead goal to lead AC Milan over Sevilla 3-1 Friday in the European Super Cup, played in the memory of Antonio Puerta.

Both teams and match officials wore black armbands in memory of Puerta, a 22-year-old Sevilla midfielder who collapsed on the field during last Saturday's Spanish league match against Getafe, and died three days later in a hospital after multiple cardiac arrests.

"We wanted to win to dedicate the game to Antonio, but we at least played well," Sevilla coach Juande Ramos said.

Players from both teams wore Puerta's name on the backs of their jerseys underneath their shirt numbers, and a minute's silence was observed while flags at Stade Louis II were flown at half staff.

Milan fans chanted Puerta's name and draped a banner reading "Onore a Puerta (Honor to Puerta)" from their end of the stadium. Sevilla's section featured several banners in homage to him.

"What has happened in the last few days with the death of Puerta created a unique atmosphere for this game," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "Obviously, Sevilla were more affected by that than us, but they played well."

The game featured last season's winners of the Champions League (Milan) and UEFA Cup (Sevilla), and Milan won the Super Cup for the fifth time.

Renato headed in Duda's corner kick in the 14th, then kissed his hand and pointed to the sky while his teammates surrounded him and Sevilla fans chanted Puerta's name.

Inzaghi, who scored twice in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool in last May's Champions League final, started Milan's comeback in the 55th minute when he leaped to head in Gennaro Gattuso's cross.

Milan went ahead in the 62nd on Andrea Pirlo's long pass from midfield to Jankulovski, who shot quickly into bottom corner from an angle.

Kaka completed the scoring in the 87th after he was tripped in the penalty area. Goalkeeper Andres Palop blocked the penalty kick, but the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper's face and Kaka headed the ball in.

Milan also won the Super Cup in 1989, 1990, 1994 and 2003.

AC Milan appealed to UEFA on Wednesday to reduce a two-match ban for goalkeeper Dida in the Champions League.

Dida was suspended for pretending to be injured after being touched by a Celtic fan who ran onto the field during a 2-1 loss in Glasgow two weeks ago.

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said the appeal was sent to UEFA on Wednesday morning.

"The important thing is that they decide in time for next Wednesday's game," Galliani said, according to the ANSA news agency. "Dida didn't do anything. Actually, he was attacked."
Milan plays Shakhtar Donetsk next week.
The incident occurred when a Celtic fan ran onto the field in the 90th minute and made what appeared to be minimal contact with Dida.
The Milan goalkeeper then turned to chase the fan before dropping to the ground. He was carried off the field on a stretcher with an ice pack pressed to his cheek, and was replaced.
Celtic was fined $25,400 for the incident and will have to pay an additional $25,400 if it fails to control its fans again in the next two years.
The 27-year-old fan who ran onto the field was later arrested and banned for life by Celtic.

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is facing increasing pressure after watching his side slump to a second consecutive Serie A defeat on Sunday, a 2-0 setback at Genoa.

The return of Kaka alongside high-profile acquisitions Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko did nothing to lift the Rossoneri.

A goal from Giuseppe Sculli after the 30-minute mark and a penalty from the returning Diego Milito in second-half injury time decided the game in favor of a lively home team who, like Milan, had spent a lot of money in the transfer market this summer, but appear to be getting a better return on their investment.

A tired Ronaldinho and disorientated Shevchenko lasted just 45 minutes for Milan, who have only a few days to regroup before their UEFA Cup tie against FC Zurich.

Despite the setback, Ancelotti vowed to continue doing things his way.

“To be honest, I am not interested in what is being written,” he said. “It is the same situation now as it has been in the past and I feel the club is still very close to me. Of course I am sorry for what is happening, but I will keep doing it my way.”

Lazio continued to roll as they secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Olimpico.

Picking up from where they left off in putting four goals past Cagliari two weeks ago, Lazio got an early strike from Mauro Zarate before Goran Pandev sealed the win 19 minutes from time.

Atalanta kept up their perfect start to the season as Tiberio Guarente got the only goal in a 1-0 win over Bologna.

Adrian Mutu scored on his return from injury but it was not enough to prevent Fiorentina from going down to a 2-1 loss at Napoli.

Mutu gave the Viola a half-time lead but second half goals from Marek Hamsik and former Fiorentina winger Christian Maggio ensured all three points remained in Naples.

Juventus moved into a share of third place in Serie A alongside Torino, Internazionale and Napoli thanks to a 1-0 win over Udinese.

The Bianconeri hit the woodwork twice and were good value for their win, which was earned by an Amauri goal in the 67th minute.

Second-half strikes from Fabio Caserta and Jose Castillo gave Lecce their first win of the season at the Stadio Via del Mare, beating Chievo 2-0 in the battle of the newly-promoted teams.

Caserta headed the opening goal two minutes after half-time before substitute Castillo notched his first ever Serie A goal to ensure a comfortable win.

Cagliari’s dismal start to the season continued as they went down 2-0 to Siena, leaving them without a point at the bottom of the table.

Emanuele Calaio’s 10th-minute opener saw Siena get off to the best possible start and Abdelkader Ghezzal netted the second on his debut in injury time.

Nicola Amoruso scored on his return to Reggina but it was not enough to maintain Torino’s perfect start to the new season in a 1-1 draw.

The 34-year-old Amoruso scored after 13 minutes to put Torino ahead but an own goal from Marco Di Loreto two minutes before half-time enabled Reggina to pick up their first point of the campaign.

On Saturday, Inter chalked up their first victory of the season and made it a winning home debut for coach Jose Mourinho as they came from behind to beat Catania 2-1.

Davide Ballardini celebrated a winning start to his reign as Palermo coach as his side beat Roma 3-1.

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said Sunday’s 1-0 derby win over champions Inter Milan showed his side have pulled out of their early-season crisis.

Brazil forward Ronaldinho headed his first goal in Serie A to give Milan their third consecutive league win after they had lost their opening games against Bologna and Genoa.

They also beat FC Zurich 3-1 in a UEFA CUP tie on Sept 18.

“I think yes (the crisis is over). Usually in these situations you say we haven’t done anything yet, but in reality over the last 10 days we’ve done things really well,” Ancelotti told Sky television.

                      Kaka agreed.

“Yes, it’s three or four matches we have won now. It’s a sequence of victories, although naturally the championship is long,” the Brazil playmaker said when asked if his side had pulled through their troubles.

Kaka also expressed his delight for former Barcelona forward Ronaldinho, who had started the last two league games on the bench and was dropped by Brazil last week for next month’s World Cup qualifiers amid concerns about his fitness.

“It’s great to see,” Kaka said. “He’s brought lots of quality and other things that this team needed and you can see that he is hungry to be a really great player again.”

Inter Milan surrendered the lead of Serie A with the defeat, falling two points behind leaders Lazio and point behind Napoli, who beat Torino and Bologna respectively earlier on Sunday.

But their coach Jose Mourinho was not downbeat after suffering his first competitive defeat since he was called in after Roberto Mancini was sacked in May.

“It was a game in which neither side prevailed,” Mourinho said.

“The title pretenders are still behind us. Being afraid to play is worse than losing. We aren’t afraid and tomorrow we’ll resume our title journey, which is a marathon.”

Inter have 10 points from five games, one more than Milan and Juventus and three more than last year’s runners-up AS Roma.

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has called for calm following his team's 1-0 victory over cross-city rivals Inter in Serie A action on the weekend.

Ronaldinho's first-half header made the difference in Sunday's match and means Milan have now gone on a run of four successive wins in the league and UEFA Cup, easing the pressure on Ancelotti after the club lost their two opening matches.

"Milan did exactly what I wanted," Ancelotti told the club website acmilan.com.

"We defended in numbers and hit on the counter attack, whilst always looking to play with balance and speed.

"The whole team played with great humility, every player helped one another. Compared to the first two games our approach to the matches and our mentality has changed.

"After this victory we must not lose sight of certain details. The losses against Genoa and Bologna are still fresh in the memory and I think it's still early to say that Milan is healed.

"Certainly the whole group learned from their errors and this helped us do better."

Inter's loss to AC Milan was the first time that they have lost since Jose Mourinho took charge, their first since being crowned champions for the third season in a row and their ex-Chelsea coach Mourinho was in his usual abrasive mood following the defeat.

"They played with all their players in midfield," the Portuguese told the club website inter.it.

"Whereas we played with only two in central midfield. (Julio) Cruz had to come on to help our two midfielders with their marking, because (Clarence) Seedorf had far too much freedom.

"It was a great derby and should have finished 1-1. That would have been a fair result, but it finished 1-0 to them and now we have to look ahead. We've lost a match, but we're ahead of them (in the table) and I'm pleased with that."

Mourinho will certainly not be pleased that the winning goal came from an unlikely source - a Ronaldinho header, his first goal in Italy - and was further angered by first the red card shown to the already substituted Marco Materazzi for abusive language and then the second yellow card to his other central defender Nicolas Burdisso.

However, captain Javier Zanetti urged the side to stay focused and not get sidetracked by the derby loss, with a Champions League fixture at home to Werder Bremen on Wednesday.

"We have to stay calm and think about Wednesday's Champions League match because there is still a long way to go in the championship," the Argentinian said.

"Milan had one chance and scored. The referee got everything wrong when he sent off Materazzi. As captain I felt I couldn't protest it in case I made things worse. The referee booked me and I hadn't even said a thing."

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini added: "For us, winning the derby was important. I think we looked for the victory more than them and we got it. We deserved the victory.

"Now we are also in a good position in the standings."

Probably the happiest man in San Siro on Sunday was Italy Prime Minister and AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi, for whom the result began his 72nd birthday celebrations on Monday.

However, despite his joy at the win, he still underlined that it was part of the team's progress and that is musn't become the season hightlight.

"I saw a great Milan tonight, who played with great technique and heart. I did not see a single player not give his best.

"Milan did what they had to do. They came on the pitch to win and control the play. But four victories aren't that many, we have to continue like this."

Paolo Maldini’s last match for AC Milan at San Siro ended in a 3-2 loss to AS Roma on Sunday, with the 40-year-old defender’s side beaten by Francesco Totti’s late free kick.

Maldini, who made his Milan debut as a gangly 16-year-old substitute back in 1985, has won a string of trophies including seven Italian league titles and five European Cups with the club.

But there was no happy ending in front of the home fans as his side twice had to equalize before finally being beaten by Totti’s free kick in the 85th minute.

John Arne Riise opened the scoring for Roma just before halftime, but Massimo Ambrosini brought Milan level in the 75th.

Jeremy Menez restored Roma’s lead five minutes later, Ambrosini drew Milan level again, but Totti stepped up to score the winner.

Ambrosini, who had kept his side in the game, was then sent off two minutes from time for arguing with referee Andrea De Marco.

Milan’s last game of the season takes Maldini and his teammates to Fiorentina next weekend.

Their coach Carlo Ancelotti refused to be drawn on his future, despite regularly being linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer when Guus Hiddink steps down as the Blues coach.

“Today was Maldini’s goodbye and it is not the moment to talk about my future,” Ancelotti said. “We have still got to qualify for the Champions League. We had it in our hands and we are nearly there.”

Newly-crowned champion Inter Milan lost 3-1 at Cagliari, while Alessandro Del Piero scored twice as Juventus beat Siena 3-0 in new coach Ciro Ferrara’s first game in charge of the Turin club.

Inter leads with 81 points, Milan and third-place Juventus both have 71, whilst Fiorentina in fourth has 68 after a 1-1 draw at Lecce.

It was Roma who made the better start at San Siro and Mirko Vucinic set Rodrigo Taddei up early on, but the Brazilian winger’s shot was weak and goalkeeper Dida pushed the ball away for a corner.

In Milan’s defense, Maldini was relatively comfortable and even joined in the attack on occasions.

But there was nothing he could do to stop Roma opening the lead just before halftime, when fullback Riise blasted in a freekick from the edge of the area.

Clarence Seedorf came on for David Beckham at halftime to sharpen the attack, but it wasn’t until the further introductions of Ronaldinho and Gianluca Zambrotta that Milan came to life.

Kaka had a shot and a header pushed away, but from his cross Filippo Inzaghi shot, Doni failed to hold the ball and Ambrosini fired home the rebound.

Roma substitute Menez then put the visitors back in the lead, dribbling past Giuseppe Favalli to shoot low past Dida, but a minute later Milan was level again as Ambrosini poked home Kaka’s low cross.

Once Totti had scored his freekick, Milan became more and more desperate and it was whilst arguing with the referee for a penalty that hadn’t been given that Ambrosini received his second booking.

“It was a one-off match and I’m pleased with the way the team played and applied themselves,” Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. “The important thing is that today the team showed that they can play when they have the right preparation in the week.

“The boys knew they had to concentrate, despite everything else going on around them today. They showed great professionalism.”

Juventus comfortably beat Siena to move level on points with Milan.

Del Piero and Claudio Marchisio scored in the first half and Del Piero added his second from a free kick to give Ferrara winning start after being appointed coach on Monday.

“It couldn’t have gone any better, it has been an intense week, but we had a good preparation and I have to thank the players for the way they applied themselves,” Ferrara said.

“I gambled on Alex and he did well, scoring two goals for me. I needed a bit of help from my captain.”

All matches on Sunday were preceded by a minute’s silence for a 19-year-old Vicenza fan who died overnight after falling six meters from a barrier during his side’s 4-0 loss at Parma.

Also Sunday, it was: Atalanta 2, Palermo 2; Catania 3, Napoli 1; Chievo Verona 0, Bologna 0; Sampdoria 2, Udinese 2; and Torino 2, Genoa 3.
