Iran under head coach Amir Ghalenoei took on Syria in their second Asian Cup 2007 qualifiers at Tehran’s Azadi stadium on August 16th, this was a match Iran had to win and playing at home Iran ranked 45th in the world were the favourite to beat Syria ranked 114th but the match ended 1-1 with Iran dropping two crucial points at home.
Syria were missing seven of their first team players in this match due to injury and effectively played with their reserve team, acting coach Fajr Ibrahim had only been in charge of Syria for 16 days prior to taking on Iran, Syria’s Serbian head coach Miloslav Radenovic quit the team at the end of July. Iran were missing three players Ali Karimi, Vahid Hashemian and Farhad Majidi.
When judging Iran’s new head coach Mr Ghalenoei it is important to bear in mind the criticism that the former coach Branko Ivankovic faced from the Iranian fans and media, when the head coach of the national team is replaced it is expected that the new coach will offer alternatives and remedy the shortcomings of the previous coach.
As expected Mr Ghalenoei opted for a 3-5-2 formation but what I found puzzling was the absence of Iran’s best defender from world cup 2006 Hussein Kaebi who remained on the subs bench for the full match. During Branko’s years the Kaebi Mahdavikia combo proved deadly to the opposition, Iran’s right flank was taken for granted to be the side of the team that would do the damage to the opposition. With Kaebi on the bench Iran’s strength on the right was nullified as the new Captain Mahdavikia struggled for support from other team mates and failed to have his usual impact on the game apart from his accurate free-kicks and corners (as ever).
Upfront on the right Khatibi who failed to impress in WC2006 or the friendly against UAE last week started the match alongside Enayati in attack, Khatibi had another poor game and missed a number of scoring opportunities, as the match appeared to be heading for a draw an unfortunate deflection from the Syrian point of view presented Iran with the lead as Nekunam’s shot was headed into Syria’s goal by their defender which totally wrong footed the Syrian keeper. This goal had followed a double substitution by Iran but the substitutions were most puzzling. Rather than providing Mahdavikia with much needed services of Kaebi or Kazemian he was taken off the field and replaced by Kazemian! I would have thought replacing the ineffective Khatibi with the Kazemian who has pace would have made more sense, on the left Madanchi who had been doing well was replaced by Mobali who had a poor game against UAE last week, this substitution weakened Iran’s left flank which had been doing OK with Nikbakht and Madanchi combo.
After the goal Syria upped the pace and started to attack Iran, I could not believe how a third rate team such as Syria missing seven of their first team players was attacking the Asian giants Iran in their capital city! In the mean time Mr Ghalenoei wasted his third
substitution by taking off Iran’s striker Khatibi replacing him with the defensive player Kazemi, clearly Ghalenoei was aiming to defend Iran’s one goal lead rather than kill Syria off with a second goal. This decision proved suicidal as Iran conceded a late goal shortly after the third substitution had been made, Iran had missed a number of opportunities to score earlier in the match courtesy of poor finishing, this combined with conservative decisions made by Ghalenoei cost Iran dearly.
The questions to raise here are as follows; Iranian media and fans put Ivankovic under immense pressure in the run-up to WC2006 criticising his choice of players, the substitutions made during the match, his game plan and tactics and his conservative mentality of not taking chances. From the outset when the critics were calling for Ivankovic’s dismissal before the world cup I was against such action on the principal that the Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation (IRIFF) would not hire a better coach, so what was to gain by sacking Ivankovic?
Today we can see that a less qualified coach (Ghalenoei) has taken over from Ivankovic, his assistants Peyrovani, Ebrahimi and Ebrahimizadeh if anything are less experienced than the previous assistant coaches Shahrokhi and Faraki (they were by no means competent either), I am now simply relieved that Ivankovic was not replaced by Ghalenoei before world cup finals, I have no doubt that Iran would have lost to Mexico and Portugal far more heavily than they did had Ghalenoei and his assistants been in charge of Team Melli in WC2006.
Iran’s performance and the match result against Syria showed Mr Ghalenoei had no game plan, he used the wrong starting eleven players and made bad substitutions and his half time talk was a failure.
Last but not least is the division created in Team Melli, for the second week running the fans at Azadi stadium were chanting Ghalenoei throughout the match, to add insult to injury the fans were quite hostile toward Nikbakht Vahedi who played on Iran’s left back, I saw no justification for the fans to chant Ghalenoei during the match other than the fans being Esteghlal fans where Mr Ghalenoei was the head coach last season rather than Team Melli fans, Nikbakht was given a hard time by Esteghlal fans in the stadium due to his transfer from Esteghlal to Persepolis this summer, all this happening in the stadium while Iran’s national team was playing against another country! In the years Blazevic and Ivankovic were in charge of Team Melli players were selected from various clubs from Mashhad to Isfehan and Ahvaz, I fear Iran is reverting back to the days when Team Melli players were selected mainly from Esteghlal and Persepolis, since the departure of Ivankovic Iran football has gone one step forward two steps back.
Iran are currently level on four points with Syria, Iran’s next match is against South Korea on September 1st, should Iran lose this match Syria would go 3 points clear of Iran by beating the underdogs Taiwan on the same day, Iran play Syria in Damascus on September 6th, unless Iran take points from South Korea the Syria game could be a very difficult match for Iran especially if Syria have their seven injured players back. South Korea currently lead the table on six points.
When Branko was the coach Iranians said he had to leave because Team melli didn't make the second round in The world cup.
Now Ghalenoei is the coach team melli is going to be last in Asia.
Draw with Syria without 7 key-players, what if Syria is at full straight, then team melli would probably los tot them with 3-1 or something.
Ghalenoei has to use players because they are good, not because they are from Perspolis or Esteghlal. And he should use use the german trio
