Thirteen Manchester United fans were hospitalised, one with a stab wound to the neck, after violence erupted before and during their Champions League clash with AS Roma, officials said Thursday.

European football's governing body, UEFA, said it had opened an investigation into the crowd trouble, which left some 18 people injured after United fans clashed with baton-wielding riot police.

A decision on whether to press full disciplinary charges is likely to be taken after the Easter break, on Tuesday, said a UEFA spokesman in Geneva. "We're still waiting for the match reports from officials," he said.

A spokeswoman for the British embassy in Rome told AFP that 13 British fans had been treated in hospital for a variety of injuries, "none life-threatening". Two stayed overnight, of whom one needed surgery, and "one is still in hospital," she said.

United and AS Roma fans were involved in running battles outside the Rome Olympic Stadium before Wednesday's game and riot police baton-charged United fans on the terraces when fresh disturbances erupted during the quarter-final match, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Italian side.

Shocking television images showed one English supporter with blood pouring from a head wound as he was carried away by other fans. One English fan was stabbed in the back of the neck.

"Too much beer" despite a ban on sales of alcohol was probably partly to blame for the clashes, the daily Gazzetto dello Sport said Thursday.

Rome police chief Achille Serra had ordered that no alcohol be sold to fans in the Italian capital from midday Wednesday until 3:00 am on Thursday.

"Despite the order ... beer and strong drinks could be bought without a problem," wrote the Rome daily Il Messaggero. "Three bar trucks were freely handing out drinks even a few metres (yards) from the stadium," it said.

Manchester United had warned its travelling supporters to be wary of certain parts of the Italian capital because of the risk of trouble from Roma followers.

Riot police quelled fights between rival fans as they made their way to the key match as well as more troubles inside.

Italian media said around 300 English fans, many of whom were inebriated, were involved in the street fights.

Inside the stadium, Roma supporters ran towards the fencing separating them from United counterparts and pelted them with plastic drink bottles, many of them full.

United fans launched similar tactics and police baton-charged the United supporters.

UEFA's new president, Michel Platini, has vowed "zero tolerance" for violence on and off the field, and recently wrote to top clubs and all federations in Europe to underline his stance.

One of Platini's senior advisors, William Gaillard, who was in Rome on Wednesday evening, noted the presence of many United fans without tickets, while Italian police escorted ticketed United fans into the Olympic stadium.

"Everything was done logistically for the ones that were the 'official' fans, to bring them in in the safest possible way and to bring them out in the safest possible way," Gaillard told AFP.

"It's quite possible that fans had access to alcohol not far from the stadium, but this still has to be determined," he added.

"There are always hawkers at football matches in Italy who sell things like that. It's one thing for the Italian fans because they don't drink, but of course with English fans it's another issue," he added.

Manchester United has already been fined by UEFA this year for the behaviour of travelling fans following incidents that marred their Champions League tie against Lille in February, when French riot police used tear gas during the match.

Lille -- which was also fined for security violations and incorrect behaviour by players -- had complained about ticketing problems with United supporters.

The troubles in Rome came only a day after the Italian parliament passed new laws in a bid to stamp out mounting football hooliganism in recent months.

Strict new security measures were introduced shortly after a policeman was killed when Catania fans went on the rampage during their derby match against Sicilian rivals Palermo in February.

The authorities briefly closed some Italian stadiums after the death while security measures were improved.

The government clampdown demanded that clubs take more responsibility for security, including more closed-circuit television cameras at stadiums, named tickets, electronic turnstiles, adequate stewarding, and crowd-filtering areas outside grounds.

Any fan carrying a banner that incites violence or contains offensive language faces arrest.

Two Manchester United fans stabbed during clashes before a Champions League match with AS Roma remained hospitalized Thursday.

Rome prefect Achille Serra said the fans were stabbed in either the groin or backside during clashes with Roma supporters Wednesday. He also said at least three of the 18 fans reported injured were Italian.

Serra said clashes inside the stadium lasted no longer than two minutes.

"On both sides there is a category of violent imbeciles who use knives," Serra said at a news conference.

Steven Fitzsimons, stabbed in the groin, told AP Television News that he and his friends were ambushed by Roma fans outside the stadium and that there weren't any police around.

"I got hit in the back of the head, I stumbled to the floor," he said "When I got up, we were surrounded by Roma fans all with knives. They just attacked us, stabbed us and that was basically it."

Italian security officials defended the conduct of police in clashes with Manchester United fans, saying Friday the officers were defending themselves and that the visiting supporters started the violence.

The government's top security official in Rome showed video clips from Wednesday's Champions League match against AS Roma at a news conference Friday, and said it was clear the English team's fans started the clashes.

Prefect Achille Serra was responding to complaints from United fans that the police overreacted.

"The officers couldn't escape at this point," he said, showing one clip in which the police were pushed up against a barricade in the stands. "They were completely surrounded."

The Italian Interior Ministry said late Wednesday the British Embassy and the Italian police were working together to determine what happened.

UEFA is awaiting reports from match and security officials on the clashes; both clubs could face a disciplinary hearing.

During the match, which Roma won 2-1, police in riot gear clashed with some of United's 4,500 fans. Police hit fans with batons as opposing fans taunted and threw objects at each other across the partition separating the rival sections.

Serra said the injured included three United fans who were stabbed and another 14 United fans with lesser injuries. Four Roma fans and seven police officers were also injured, he said.

Three United fans were arrested on charges of violence against a public officer, Serra said.

The two opponents face each other, neither showing signs of fear. One side is filled with passion, strength in numbers and maybe too much attitude. The other is united, powerful and prepared for anything.

When the action starts, bad things happen.

And it happened twice last week: soccer fans and police fighting in the stands.

The first time was Wednesday in Italy during AS Roma's 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinals. A day later in Spain, there was more trouble as Sevilla beat Tottenham by the same score in the last eight of the UEFA Cup.

In each case -- both involving traveling English fans -- it's difficult to decide who was to blame.

It's easy to say it was the fans, especially considering which fans were involved. The English have a long history of hooliganism, but the country has gone to great lengths in recent years to stop the violence, including banning fences inside stadiums that can create a caged-in feeling.

It's not hard to blame the police, either. But knowing the reputation of English fans, they can hardly be condemned for possibly overreacting to the slightest perceived act of violence -- particularly after fighting had occurred outside each stadium before the game.

The fault, more than likely, lies in distinct soccer cultures.

English soccer fans clearly can be aggressive, especially after a few pints of beer. But it's hard to imagine the majority are looking to pick a fight with a throng of police officers armed with batons and wearing riot gear.

In English stadiums, the police show their might in numbers but are generally subdued when it comes to pushing around unruly fans. They know they're not going to get involved in any scuffles unless they are truly threatened.

In southern Europe, the police don't necessarily wait for something bad to happen before jumping into action. Consider what happened in Sicily in February.

Filippo Raciti, a 38-year-old Italian policeman, was killed during street clashes at the Catania-Palermo game Feb. 2. But that was outside the stadium, where police have less control because the fans are no longer crammed into certain sections.

After Raciti's death, play was suspended for a week and the country passed laws requiring stadiums to be more secure. Britain's top law enforcement official, Home Secretary John Reid, then offered to help the Italians combat the violence.

But another factor in the more recent violence, which certainly played a role at the Roma match, is yet another cultural difference among fans.


When an English team scores a goal, the fans yell and cheer in jubilation, and then maybe send a few foul words toward the opposing fans.

In southern Europe, however, many celebrate a goal by instantly goading rival fans with hand signals that are more prevalent during rush-hour traffic jams.

The Roma fans are no exception. After Rodrigo Taddei scored to give his team a 1-0 lead in the first half, they even started banging on the transparent partition that separated them from a section of United fans.

The United fans reacted, likely perceiving that as an act of aggression, by running toward the partition and banging back. That's when the police in the United section got involved, leaving some bloodied and others with bumps and bruises.

In the aftermath, each side was quick to blame the other.

"In what the club views as a severe overreaction, local police handed out indiscriminate beatings to United supporters," United said.

Achille Serra, the Italian government's top security official in Rome, had another view after watching a video tape of the trouble.

"The officers couldn't escape," Serra said. "They were completely surrounded."

In Seville, riot police charged at Tottenham fans shortly after Sevilla had scored its first goal from a disputed penalty. Many of the visiting fans, while surrounded by police, tore up stadium seats and threw them.

Spanish police said 11 officers were injured in the scuffle and one had to be hospitalized.

The governing body of European soccer will certainly look at both disturbances. UEFA president Michel Platini, who took over in January, has been calling for a crackdown on violence, and last month wrote a letter to all 53 European soccer associations.

"Our game is under serious threat -- from violence," Platini wrote. "Violence on the field, in the stands and outside stadiums is poisoning football."

Manchester United produced one of the finest performances in 50 years of European competition to destroy AS Roma 7-1 on Tuesday and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2002.

United, trailing 2-1 from the first meeting in Rome, had never previously overturned a first leg deficit in five attempts in the competition but did so in astonishing style to win the tie 8-3 on aggregate.

It was the biggest victory in a quarter-final match in either the European Cup or Champions League since Real Madrid beat Sevilla 8-0 in 1957-58, clocking up a 10-2 aggregate victory.

It was also the biggest winning margin in a Champions League knockout round game, Roma's heaviest defeat in Europe and United's biggest win in Europe since a 7-1 victory over Waterford of Ireland in the first round of the European Cup in 1968-69 when they were the defending champions.

Three goals in a scintillating eight-minute burst early in the first half by Michael Carrick, Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney had United in command and Roma, second in Serie A, shell-shocked.

Cristiano Ronaldo then scored either side of the break, Carrick netted a spectacular second and, after Daniele De Rossi pulled one back, Patrice Evra capped a night to remember with the seventh.

The remarkable result, coming three days after defeat at Portsmouth in the league, took United into a last-four meeting with either Bayern Munich or AC Milan and sustained their hopes of repeating their 1999 European and domestic treble -- clinched when they beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in Barcelona.

Manager Alex Ferguson described the result as the best of his 21 years at Old Trafford.

"It was absolutely superb," he told ITV. "It was a fantastic performance. We showed great confidence after two defeats in the last week. All great teams get over these mishaps and we did that tonight."

Ferguson sprung a tactical surprise by playing Rooney, Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs as a three-man attacking midfield unit to support Smith, recalled for only his fourth start of the season, as the lone striker.

The idea worked like a dream as the trio ran Roma ragged in a blistering opening quarter that settled the tie.

QUICKFIRE SHOT

Carrick got things moving in the 11th minute when his quickfire shot from outside the box left goalkeeper Doni rooted as the ball flew past him.

That alone would have been enough to send United through on the away goals rule but they were in no mood to settle.

In the 17th minute Rooney combined with Giggs to send Smith through and the striker seemed to put every moment of suffering from a year of injury hell into his unstoppable finish.

Less than two minutes later Old Trafford was in raptures as Giggs was given time and space to cross low from the right for Rooney to touch in the third.

The Italians' usually parsimonious defence was being run ragged and their only worthwhile attacking effort was a well-struck free kick by Francesco Totti that Edwin van der Sar saved well.

RONALDO'S 20th

It United who again finished on the offensive as Ronaldo was offered the channel he loves down the right and duly accepted before driving in the fourth.

It had been an incredible half and it took only two minutes of the second period for United to extend their lead.

Again Giggs was the provider as his perfectly-measured low cross was turned in by Ronaldo for the Portuguese winger's 20th goal of a sparkling season.

Carrick then drove home a superlative sixth from 25 metres on the hour as joy turned to disbelief in the near-75,000 crowd.

Roma got on the scoresheet with a lovely volley on the turn by De Rossi but United restored their stunning six-goal margin when substitute defender Evra scored again with a low shot from the edge of the box nine minutes from time.

"This points the way ahead," said Ferguson. "Two years ago against AC Milan (in the same competition) Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were young boys but they showed they've grown up tonight."

Fans fought outside the stadium before Manchester United's 7-1 win over AS Roma on Tuesday night in the European Champions League.

United advanced to the semifinals with the win, beating the Italian team 8-3 in the home-and-home, total goals series. Chelsea also advanced by defeating Valencia 2-1 for a 3-2 overall.

Before the game in Manchester, fans from both clubs threw bottles and other objects at police lines and taunted each other with soccer chants. No one was seriously injured.

Last week in Rome, police fought with United fans in the stands, but there was no trouble inside Old Trafford on Tuesday.

In the semifinals, United will face AC Milan or Bayern Munich, and Chelsea will take on Liverpool or PSV Eindhoven. AC Milan and Bayern tied 2-2 last week in Italy, and Liverpool won 3-0 at PSV.

Two-time champion United got two goals each from Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ryan Giggs played a part in four of the seven. Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra also scored, while Daniele De Rossi connected for Roma.

"It was a fantastic performance," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We can't wait for the semifinals now."

Michael Essien, who has recently been sidelined with a knee injury, scored the winning goal for Chelsea with a hard shot to the near post.

"I think it's a great performance, especially the second half," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "I repeat, a great performance against a good team in a difficult stadium."

Fernando Morientes had given Valencia the lead in the 32nd minute, but Andriy Shevchenko equalized for Chelsea in the 52nd.

"A late goal hurts because it leaves you with no time to keep your chances alive. It's one of the worst fates a team can suffer," Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores said.

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez is using his team's remarkable comeback in the 2005 Champions League final to keep them focused for Wednesday's straightforward quarter-final second leg against PSV Eindhoven.

Liverpool seem certain to progress to a semi-final meeting with either Chelsea or Valencia after crushing their Dutch rivals 3-0 in the away leg but Benitez says that the miracle of Istanbul, when Liverpool came from 3-0 down to eventually beat AC Milan penalties, will ensure there is no complacency.

"These kind of games are difficult. Sometimes teams say 'OK, the job is done' but we have to be careful," Benitez said ahead of the Anfield return.

"We know there have been comebacks from 3-0 down in the Champions League - we did it in Istanbul. We know if they score an early goal they will push forward and we could have problems so we have to approach the game the same as we did against Barcelona and try to win."

In that knockout round tie Liverpool led 2-1 from the away leg and although they eventually lost the Anfield return 1-0 to go through on the away goals rule they played positively all night and never allowed Barcelona to feel that they were on top.

And for all Benitez's warnings, history says that PSV have no chance. In more than half a century of European soccer 114 teams have lost a home first leg 3-0 and none of them have advanced.

INSPIRATIONAL GERRARD

Liverpool's comeback against Milan was built on the forceful, inspirational presence of Steven Gerrard but PSV have nobody of that calibre in their lineup, while the England midfielder will ensure that nobody in his own team allows his individual contribution to fall off.

Gerrard scored the opener in the first leg as Liverpool produced another top-notch European performance, albeit against injury-hit opponents who seemed intent from the start only on trying to secure a goalless draw.

The only black mark on the night was the ruptured Achilles tendon suffered by impressive Brazilian midfielder Fabio Aurelio which has ended his season and opened the door for a possible start for Mark Gonzalez.

Benitez's other main selection issue is up front where Dirk Kuyt is suspended. Red-hot Peter Crouch looks a certain starter but Craig Bellamy looked off the pace alongside him before being substituted early in the second half of Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at Reading, and made sure his manager was aware of his displeasure at the decision.

PSV will travel to England with a 16-man squad as Alex, Ibrahim Afellay, Edison Mendes, Michael Reiziger, Alcides and Jan Kromkamp are all sidelined.

Coach Ronald Koeman, who said after the first leg that their Champions League campaign was over, is desperate to halt PSV's slide. The Dutch league leaders, who lost at the weekend, have seen their 11-point advantage whittled down to two with three games to play.

"We have to become again the team that dominated before the winter break" he said.

وي گفت : همه بازيكنان بسيار بااعتماد هستند . ما در رم شكست خورديم اما همه معتقد بودند كه مي*توانيم از سد اين تيم بگذريم.

رونالدو افزود: نتيجه باورنكردني بود. پيروزي ۷بر يك مقابل رم در يك چهارم نهايي فوق*العاده است.اين نتيجه براي بازيكنان و باشگاه مبهوت*كننده است اما اكنون بايد به نيمه نهايي فكر كنيم.

اتحاديه فوتبال اروپا (يوفا) از پليس كشورهاي اين قاره خواست در برخورد با خشونت هواداران در مسابقات فوتبال از همتايان انگليسي خود كه تجربه بيشتري در اين زمينه دارند، پيروي كنند.

به گزارش خبرگزاري فرانسه از لندن، هر دو مسابقه رفت و برگشت منچستر يونايتد انگليس و آاس رم ايتاليا در مرحله يك چهارم نهايي جام باشگاه*هاي اروپا با درگيري*هاي خشونت*آميز هواداران دو تيم همراه بود در حاليكه چنين اتفاقي در جريان ديدار تاتنهام مقابل سوي*يا در جام يوفا نيز روي داد.

پس از اتفاق هفته گذشته در رم، پليس ايتاليا به دليل برخورد شديد با هواداران منچستريونايتد مورد انتقاد قرار گرفت و همين داستان در سوي*يا نيز تكرار شد.

"ويليام گايلارد" مدير ارتباطات يوفا روز چهارشنبه از پليس اروپا خواست در برخود با چنين حوادثي از پليس انگليس پيروي كند.

وي در اين*باره گفت: "ميشل پلاتيني" رييس يوفا مكررا خواستار الگو برداري پليس از تجربه انگليس در برخود با خشونت هواداران شده است. با توجه به اينكه خشونت تماشاگران در مسابقات فوتبال يكي از مشكلات بسيار جدي در انگليس بود، پليس اين كشور در ۲۰يا ۲۵سال گذشته بارها مجبور به كنترل جمعيت شده است.

گايلارد افزود: اكنون در ديگر كشورها با وضعيتي روبرو شده*ايم كه بيش از اين قابل قبول نيست و استفاده از تجربه انگليس در اين زمينه ضروري است.

وي همچنين پليس رم را به دليل برخورد نامناسب با هواداران
منچستريونايتد كه منجر به بستري شدن ۱۱نفر از آنها شد، متهم كرد و گفت:
بدون ترديد همراهي هواداران با گروهي به وسيله گروه اندكي از افسران پليس كه فرهنگ آنها را مي*شناسند و مي*توانند آنها را كنترل كنند، كنترل بسياري خواهد كرد. هفته گذشته شايد يك نفر هم از ميان نيروهاي پليس رم نمي*توانست انگليسي صحبت كند.

بر اساس اعلام پليس، در جريان مسابقه ديشب تيم*هاي منچستريونايتد و رم، ۱۶هوادار از جمله ۱۲انگليسي و چهار ايتاليايي به دليل درگيري با پليس دستگير شدند.

اين افراد پس از درگيري بين بيش از ۱۰نفر از هواداران دو تيم در خارج از ورزشگاه اولدترافورد شهر منچستر دستگير شدند.

مدير ارتباطات يوفا با اشاره بر لزوم همكاري*هاي بيشتر پليس كشورهاي اين قاره، خاطر نشان كرد: آنچه مهم است همكاري*هاي بيشتر كشورها نه تنها در مورد هوليگانيسم و خشونت بلكه فساد، شرط بندي غير قانوني، پول شويي در ورزش و دوپينگ و غيره است. با همكاري*هاي بيشتر، به نتايج بهتري نيز دست خواهيم يافت.
