Osaka, Japan, November 16, 2006: Russia won their sixth World Championship with a pulsating 3-2 victory over Brazil in the final on Thursday.

The Russians won 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 15-13 to end Brazil's hopes of a first world crown and take the gold medal for the first time since 1990.

It was a magnificent finale to the World Championships, with Russia's Big Red Machine squeaking past the famous canary yellow and green of Brazil in a five-set epic.

A noisy band of Brazilian supporters created a samba-style atmosphere for the final, and Russia made a nervy start on serve and reception.

The Russian block clicked into gear, though, and there were few clean winners in the early stages as the teams probed the net and looked for openings in defences and systems they knew well.

Yulia Merkulova brought up the first TTO 8-6 for Russia with a cross-court jab from the right, and the power of Ekaterina Gamova and Elena Godina kept the Russians in front, with playmaker Lioubov Shashkova holding everything together.

An ace from Fabiana Claudino brought Brazil level 13-13 and the South Americans forged ahead 15-13 to prompt the first TO of the match from Russia. When another dipping jump serve from Fabiana was miscontrolled by Shashkova, Brazil were three points clear at the second TTO and now had their rhythm.

Suddenly the Russians were looking vulnerable, and Jaqueline Carvalho pounded a trademark winner from the left to drive Brazil forward.

Another serve reception error by Shashkova from Sheilla Castro resulted in her replacement by captain Natalia Safronova, and Brazil stormed ahead 22-14, at which point setter Marina Akulova was switched for Marina Sheshenina.

Russia were in disarray. Carvalho brought up set point at 24-15 when her attack was blocked and fell wide, and the same player then closed out the set 25-15 with a service ace the Russian defence left alone.

Trailing 3-1 in the second set, Russia needed a TO, but they still had no answer to Fabiana flying down the middle and scoring easily, or to the pumped-up Carvalho churning out the points from the left.

Shashkova spiked long from the back court and Merkulova served long to leave Brazil 8-6 ahead at the first TTO.

The serves of Fabiana continued to cause problems for the hesitant Russian defence, and Carvalho pounded winner after winner at the peak of her leap. Welissa "Sassa" Gonzaga took Brazil to the second TTO with the most slender of leads, 16-15, but unforced errors on attack and serve from Walewska Oliveira gave the Russians hope.

Shashkova then turned on the style and helped her team draw level 20-20, only for Brazil sub Mari Steinbrecher to appear and bludgeon two winners on the left. At 23-21, the second set was in sight for Brazil, and Russia called a final TO to try and halt the flow. The talk worked, and Gamova came up with two spiralling winners to make it 23-23 and take Brazil off court for a TO.

A serve reception error by Carvalho from Akulova gave Russia set point at 24-23, and Castro fired wide down the right to hand Russia the second set 25-23 and make it 1-1.

Russia had gained the ascendancy now, and Gamova, Godina and Shashkova all scored fluid winners, while Merkulova blocked Fabiana and spiked from the right. A towering Gamova winner had the crowd gasping and a bullet serve from Godina extended their lead to 11-6.

Brazilian sub Renata Colombo was brought on to add extra firepower, and a brilliant dig by Steinbrecher turned a Gamova firecracker into a Brazilian winner just inside the Russian end line.

But Russia were on top of their game. Merkulova's jackhammer spike and an attacking error by Carvalho gave the Europeans a four-point cushion at the second TTO, 16-12. Under pressure from the Russian block, the Brazilian attack began to falter, unlike Gamova, who smashed her team to the third set 25-18.

In the fourth set, Brazil's captain and setter Fofao needed treatment after sliding head first into the advertising boards trying to retrieve the ball, such was the intensity of the contest.

Sheilla Castro, soaring from the back court, and Fabiana at the net suggested a Brazilian revival was underway at 11-9, but they knew they had to maintain this form to break the Russian resistance. A thumping winner from Walewska left a trail of red shirts on the ground, and Brazil led 16-13 at the second TTO.

Fabiana turned the clock back briefly to the first set with her rapid-fire winners at the net, and Castro flew in from the right, 20-17 Brazil.

When Gamova fired into the net to fall four behind, Russia called a TO with the fourth set slipping away. The Brazilian fans were back in full voice, and Castro responded with a crunching block on Godina. Fofao touched one over for set point, and Steinbrecher finished it coolly 25-20 for 2-2.

The tie-break opened with possibly the longest rally of the match before Castro struck the decisive blow, but the Russians held two-point leads and made Brazil play catch-up. Russia turned round 8-6 ahead, only for Fabiana to show all her net craft and score two straight points for 8-8.

Every point was greeted like the match-winner in a pulsating encounter as neither team could pull away. Castro kept pushing Brazil ahead, and Shashkova spiked wide, 13-11 Brazil.

Gamova closed the gap to one, and when Castro spiked long it was level again 13-13. A Merkulova block on Carvalho gave Russia match point at 14-13, and Gamova tipped over the winner, 15-13.

Iran 0 - 3 Czech

Czechs make steady start with confident win over Iran

November 17, Nagano: The Czech Republic made a confident start to their World Championships campaign with a straight sets victory over Iran.

The spirited Iranians pushed their European opponents hard in each set, but ultimately paid the price for a slow start as the Czechs ran out 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 winners.

The Czech Republic began in commanding fashion, racing to an 8-4 lead with powerful spiking from Jan Stokr and Michal Rak.

Stokr was also giving Iran problems with his deadly service, but Alireza Nadi showed he could fight fire with fire with a strong smash at the net.

Mohammed Torkashvand also weighed in with a heavy hit on the left as Iran hauled the early leaders back to 11-9, but Czech captain Martin Lebl was establishing himself at the net.

A few fluffed services on both sides made sure neither side could gain a foothold, and venomous spikes from Stokr and Iran's Mohammed Mansouri illustrated how tight the set had become.

But the Czechs had never conceded the lead throughout Iran's fightback, and Peter Platenik's attacking wing play was taking them closer.

Iran fought them all the way, but they were up against it after their slow start.

Another Stokr spike gave the Czechs set point, and Ondrej Hudecek finished it one point later.

The Czech Republic threatened to pull away again at the start of the second set as Hudecek rampaged down the left.

But Behnam Mahmoudi and captain Peyman Akbari made sure their European opponents didn't get too far ahead, as Iran looked to get back into the match.

Sloppy serving on either side was not helping matters, but there was nothing careless about the way Mansouri was racking up the points for Iran.

The number 6 was all over the court, seeming to hang in mid-air as he contested each ball.

Nadi was also finding success, but unfortunately for the Iranians, so was Stokr, as the Czech Republic went into the second TTO 16-12 ahead.

Iran libero Farhad Zarif, by far the shortest man on the court at 165cm, was defending like a lion as the frequency of the Czech attacks increased.

But every time he dived to return the ball with an incredible dig, it seemed there was someone on the other side of the net to smash it back at him.

More often than not it was captain Lebl, but it was Rak that brought up set point with a block.

Rak then repeated the trick to give the Europeans the second set after a marathon rally.

Iran made sure they did not start the third set on the back foot again, as they took an early 4-2 advantage.

Mahmoudi kept up the pressure with a big spike to make it 9-5, but Hudecek hit straight back before Lebl snatched more ground with a service ace.

Iran had seen the value of an early lead in the previous two sets, however, and were in no mood to give it up.

Mahmoudi fired another giant spike into the Czech defence, to lead his side into the second TTO 16-13 ahead.

But Czech momentum was growing, and another block from Rak brought them level at 19-19.

Yet another block from the irrepressible Rak took them ahead at 20-19, and suddenly the match was theirs for the taking.

Captain Lebl gave the Czech Republic match point at 24-22, and a block by Jiri Popelka sealed an impressive opening win for the Europeans.

Venezuela continue winning ways with victory over Iran

November 18, Nagano: Venezuela's winning start to the competition continued as they brushed off an Iran fightback in the Nagano White Ring.

The South Americans, who had clipped the USA's wings on the opening day, took the first set before Iran brought themselves level at 1-1.

But Venezuela persevered to close out the match 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, and maintain their perfect start to the tournament.

Iran had not managed to claim a set in their opening defeat to the Czech Republic, but had come mighty close on more than one occasion.
Venezuela coach Eliseo Ramos, meanwhile, had said after the win over the USA that his side were growing in confidence.
But it was Iran who made the brighter start.

Behnam Mahmoudi snapped into life while his South American opponents were still trying to find their rhythm, but blocks by Ivan Marquez soon brought Venezuela up to speed.
Setter Juan Carlos Blanco followed Marquez's lead, hooking the ball over his head with his back to the net to catch the Iranian defence off-guard.

Captain Thomas Ereu also got into the act as he fired a spike on the left to give Venezuela a 13-9 lead, prompting Iran coach Milorad Kijac to call a time-out as the South Americans began to pull away.

Unforced errors and a good block from Alireza Nadi gave the Iranians hope however, but another Ernardo Gomez missile from the right flank reminded the Asians what they were up against.

Fredy Cedeno was incensed that the referee denied him another point soon after, but the number 18 recovered his composure to claim the next one and take his team closer.
Gomez served for the set at 24-19, and while Iran captain Peyman Akbari bought his side some time, Gomez was more insistent at the next time of asking as he took the set for Venezuela.

Behnam made sure Iran were back in the hunt early in the second set, helping his side to an 8-6 lead at the first TTO.

Mohammed Mansouri notched another after the restart, and Venezuela coach Ramos called a time-out as Mansouri's teammates added two more.

But the South Americans steadily began chipping away at Iran's lead, with Gomez tireless in his attacking play.
Captain Thomas Ereu contributed a delicate tip-over at the net, although crucial points by Mohammed Torkashvand and Mansouri kept Iran in front.

The Asians were looking to close the set out at 21-17, but Gomez and Marquez were not prepared to sit back and hand it to them on a plate.

Venezuela were now breathing down Iran's necks.
But a missed block gave the Iranians set point, and when ball into Venezuelan territory caused confusion in the defensive ranks, Iran levelled the match at 1-1.

Venezuela narrowly had the better of the opening exchanges of the third set, heading into the first TTO with an 8-6 lead.

Gomez continued his unrelenting form, as Akbari and Torkashvand replied for Iran.

The teams proceeded to match each other point for point, until Marquez launched another attack at the net to give Venezuela a glimpse of the lead.

A mix-up in the Iranian offence immediately after, where a Nadi dummy was not read by his teammates, spurred coach Kijac into calling a time-out.

But the South Americans had hit their stride, and returned to establish a clear advantage at 17-13.

They didn't look back, as Iran lost their grip and Venezuela surged towards set point.

It arrived when Marquez rose again at the net, and ended when substitute Carlos Tejeda drove in a cross-court smash.
Gomez blotted his copybook at the start of the fourth set with a lapse in concentration that gave Iran an early lead.
With the ball spinning high towards the Venezuelan half, Gomez allowed it to drop beside him, confident it would land out of play.

But the cheers from the Iranian players soon made him aware of his error as the Asians gratefully accepted a 4-3 advantage.

Gomez soon recovered from his blushes to power Venezuela into the lead, but a Mansouri ace brought Iran back into it at 13-13.

Substitute Seyed Bazargard's appearance had given the Iranians a new weapon on the flanks, although Venezuela were doing just enough to nose into the second TTO ahead at 16-15.

Big blocks on either side kept things close, but captain Ereu was pulling his side towards the finish line.
Gomez added an ace to bring up match point, and produced another to clinch the match in style.

Venezuela start their campaign with a bang

November 17, Nagano: Venezuela gave the 2006 World Championships its first upset as they downed the USA in Pool C.

The Americans fought back after losing the first set, but could find no further reply as a powerful and well-organised Venezuela ran out 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18 winners.

Venezuela made a confident start against their higher-ranked opponents, driving home spikes from Ernardo Gomez and Ivan Marquez.

The Venezuelan defence had also began brightly, continually frustrating the Americans' attempts to release Riley Salmon down the left.

The USA were keeping pace, but an ace from Luis Diaz prompted American coach Hugh McCutcheon to take a time-out with his side trailing at 11-7.

William Priddy found a way through with a huge spike, but it was Venezuela who went into the second TTO 16-10 ahead.

Diaz added another as Venezuela reached the 20-point mark ahead by seven points, and a block by captain Thomas Ereu took them further ahead.

The US had not found their rhythm, and before long another Ereu foray down the left gave the South Americans set point.

Heroic defending by Priddy saved the US from sudden death, but Diaz made sure the second time to give Venezuela the first set 25-18.

Clayton Stanley drew first blood for the US after the restart, but big hits by Fredy Cedeno and Gomez kept up the tempo for Venezuela.

The South Americans then reached the first TTO 8-3 ahead, much to the annoyance of the US players, who disputed the wayward spike with the referee until the match had restarted.

But the arrival of captain Thomas Hoff seemed to have a positive impact on his teammates as they took the lead 11-10, and Venezuela were also beginning to make mistakes.

The Americans sensed an opportunity, and David McKienzie and James Polster were ruthless in exploiting it.

The US had carved out a lead for themselves, and now it was Venezuela's turn to look rattled.

South American setter Diaz tried to stem the growing tide with a different approach, hooking the ball over as the US defence waited for the spike, but it was only a moment's respite.

A spike into the net gave America set point, and McKienzie again coming in from the right levelled the match at 1-1.

Both teams were anxious to break the deadlock, and threw themselves full steam into the third set.

Ryan Millar weighed in with points for the US, while Juan Carlos Blanco was doing the same for Venezuela.

There was little between the two teams, and as soon as Venezuela had squeezed into a two-point lead at 12-10, USA coach McCutcheon called a time-out.

But the South Americans carried on where they left off, and had sooned widened the points gap to four.

McKienzie did his best to drag the US back into the reckoning, but Venezuela's powerful defence refused to give up their slender advantage.

A serve into the net from the US gave Venezuela the chance to take the set, and another confirmed it.

The fourth set began in just as tight a manner as previously, and despite the best efforts of Venezuela's Diaz firing missiles from the left, it was the USA who led at the first TTO.

Hoff was cleaning up at the net, but Diaz was also making an impression with his all-round play.

The South Americans took a decisive step towards the match when they won an epic point while 16-14 ahead.

A series of attacks from both sides ended in a miscued spike from McKienzie, and Venezuela then went closer when Hoff crashed through the advertising hoardings and over a table as he tried in vain to stop another Ereu spike.

A wild serve by Stanley gave Venezuela match point, and Ereu wrapped it up with a spike to start the championships with a bang.

Bulgaria batter Italy in heavyweight clash

November 17, Nagano: Bulgaria came from behind to batter Italy into submission in Pool C.

The Italians took the first set of a bruising heavyweight European encounter, but Bulgaria came storming back to win the next two as the momentum of the match shifted sides.

The Azzurri regained their composure to force the match into a tiebreak set, but the eastern Europeans eventually held their nerve to triumph 20-25, 26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 15-8.

Both sides traded heavy blows in the early stages as they looked to gain a foothold.

But it was the Italians that took the advantage, as Luigi Mastrangelo imposed himself on the match with his spiking prowess.

Bulgaria's Hristo Tsvetanov was also fired up for the occasion, but he could not stop Italy from heading into the second TTO with their noses in front.

Paolo Cozzi increased the Italians' lead, before Samuele Papi fired a shot off a Bulgarian arm and out to take the score to 22-19.

Alberto Cisolla then planted a massive spike down the centre of the court to give Italy set point at 24-20, and Alessandro Fei blocked to draw first blood for the Azzurri.

Tsvetanov helped Bulgaria to a narrow 8-6 advantage at the start of the second set, rising for a towering block before showing the other side of his game with a lethal spike.

Captain Plamen Konstantinov and Vladimir Nikolov were also involved, but Italy made sure they kept themselves just one step behind.

Fei was finding success at the net, and a Cisolla ace brought the Italians level at 13-13.

Italy could sense the momentum was with them, and after Fei had added another spike that knocked the Bulgarian defender off his feet, Cozzi got up for a block to take the Italians into the second TTO 16-14 ahead.

But Nikolov was making a nuisance of himself on the left flank, and his points made sure Bulgaria didn't run out of steam.

A series of services errors for both teams then set nerves jangling, and it was Bulgaria that came out with the chance of taking the set at 24-23 after an Evgeni Ivanov block.

Papi saved the point for the Italians, but Nikolov gave his team another chance.

Cozzi spiked out, and Bulgaria were level.

A Matey Kaziyski ace helped Bulgaria to open up a 5-2 lead at the start of the third set, and not even a nice piece of control from Mastrangelo's foot could prevent Italy going further behind.

Matej Cernic came on to salvage a few points for the Italians, but his teammates could only parry a Krasimir Gaydarski smash as Bulgaria headed into the second TTO at 16-10.

Kaziyski unleashed another missile on the left, before Mastrangelo served into the net as the Bulgarians reached 20 points.

What had begun well for the Italians was beginning to fall apart.

A Konstantinov cross-court smash gave Bulgaria set point, and Boyan Yordanov crashed over another to take Bulgaria into the fourth set ahead.

Two successive hammer aces by Fei helped get Italy back on track after the restart, and Cisolla flying down the left underlined the point.

Papi then fired in a smash as the Italians stretched their lead to 15-8, and suddenly it was Bulgaria who were under the kosh.

Fei and Cisolla made sure the attacks kept coming from all directions, and Bulgaria coach Martin Stoev had no choice but to call a time-out with his side trailing 20-12.

But the Italians had the bit between their teeth, and soon had set point from another Fei bullet.

Once the ball was back in play, Fei simply reloaded and drew Italy level at two sets apiece.

Kaziyski threw it straight back at the Italians at the start of the tie-break, as Bulgaria took a quick 4-1 lead.

Nikolov increased the advantage to 6-2, his team celebrating every point knowing they were getting ever closer to victory.

An Italian shot into the net took the score to 10-4, and not even heroic defending by Italian libero Mirko Corsano could not prevent the inevitability of match point.

Kaziyski ricocheted the shot off an Italian defender, and the match was Bulgaria's.

Serbia-Montenegro power past Russia

November 17, 2006, Sendai, Japan — Serbia-Montenegro showcased a devastating display of attacking verve to run out 3-0 winners against Russia in Pool D on Friday.

The architects of the 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 victory were Ivan Miljkovic and Goran Vujevic, with the Russians struggling to cope with the winning-team's high-tempo attack.

The clash of the Pool D big guns may have come on the first day, but both teams showed no sign of cobwebs as they hammered at each other from the get-go.

Nothing less was expected from such a mouth-watering match up: the six-times world champions Russia, ranked third, against the 2002 world championships runners-up Serbia-Montenegro, ranked fourth.

Russia¡Çs twin towers of Stanislav Dineykin (215 cm) and Alexey Kazakov (217 cm) began the game by rattling in some awe-inspiring spikes, but Serbia-Montenegro soon proved they were no slouches in the attacking department, either.

Neither team gave an inch as the first set stayed close in the early stages, but Serbia-Montenegro found a little consistency to head into the second TTO 16-13 ahead.

Serbia-Montenegro star player Miljkovic started quietly, but made his mark on the game with a massive spike to put his team 19-16 ahead as both teams kept up an incredible tempo of relentless attacking.

It was breathless stuff.

Russia coach Zoran Gajic — who is from Serbia-Montenegro — sensed the set was slipping away at 22-19 to the opponents and called a timeout, but it was to no avail.

Vujevic stepped up for Serbia-Montenegro to give them set point at 24-21 with spike and then was substituted for Slobodan Boskan.

Russia won the next point but Vujevic came straight back on to dispatch a thunderous spike and give his team the first set, 25-22.

Vujevic started the second set as he finished the first — in a no-nonsense mood.

The 33-year-old steamed down the middle for a cracking winner that made it 6-2 to his team and they went into the first TTO 8-3 ahead.

Vladimir Grbic wasn¡Çt to be outdone in the monster spike stakes, though, and it was his piledriver that sent his team into the second TTO 16-11 ahead.

Russia continued to battle but couldn¡Çt get to grips on their opponents. Gajic called a timeout as he looked at a 20-14 reverse, but things didn¡Çt get better and Serbia-Montenegro kept their distance to close out the set 25-18 on a Russian defensive mistake.

Alexey Kuleshov looked as though he wasn¡Çt in the giving-up frame of mind and pushed the Russians forward in the third set with some good attacking play, while captain Semen Poltavsky finally found his range with some precision strikes.

Vujevic seemed to tire for Serbia-Montenegro and his influence on the game waned a little, but the younger Miljkovic simply took over the responsibilities of being Russia¡Çs tormenter-in-chief.

His spikes weren¡Çt clean winners but the enormous power generated carried too much of a sting for Russia¡Çs men at the net and Miljkovic and Co. soon found themselves 18-13 ahead.

Russia pulled back to 23-22, but Serbia-Montenegro edged to match point and after losing out on the first point up stepped Miljkovic — who else? — to crash home the crucial point that gave his side a big victory.

Egypt beat Puerto Rico in tie-breaker

Saitama, Japan, November 18, 2006: Egypt recovered from two sets down to beat Puerto Rico 3-2 in Pool A on Saturday.

The Egyptians formed a circle and danced in delight after coming back to beat Puerto Rico 27-29, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-12 for their first win and a 1-1 record. Puerto Rico dropped to 1-1 after beating Argentina in five sets the previous day.

Egypt held a two-point advantage at the second TTO of the first set, but Puerto Rico pulled level 20-20 thanks to some fiery left-handed spikes from Jose Rivera and a Hector Soto block on Saleh Youssef.

Puerto Rico held the edge in the closing stages, but missed chances to seal the first set when leading 24-23 and 25-24, the latter thanks to an excellent block on Soto by Youssef.

Then it was Egypt's turn to miss two set points at 26-25 and 27-26, before Soto brought up Puerto Rico's third set point at 28-27 with an opportunistic spike at the net following a poor serve reception. On this occasion Puerto Rico made no mistake, as captain Luis Rodriguez rejected Mohamed Elnafrawy's attack at the net, 29-27.

Soto, who came into the match with 38 points from Friday's defeat of Argentina, led his team again with nine in the first set, followed by lefty Rivera on six.

Egypt's own southpaw spiker, Ahmed Abd Elnaeim, replied with six, closely followed by Youssef and Elnafrawy with five apiece.

The unlucky Egyptians looked a bit disheartened on the resumption, and pumped-up Puerto Rico cashed in by building an early lead. When Victor Rivera blazed another winner from the left past a two-man Egyptian block, the Central Americans led 16-9 at the second TTO and were well on course to take the second set.

Trailing 20-11, Egypt clawed their way back. Mohamed Gabal tipped one over the net, Youssef struck on the left wing and Mahmoud Elkoumy blocked to keep the pressure on Puerto Rico.

Ashraf Abouel Hassan then caught out the Puerto Rico defence with a well-disguised, well-flighted service ace to the front court. The Puerto Ricans were too far ahead, though, and Rene Esteves closed out the second set 25-19 for 2-0.

The teams stayed close in the third set, and Egypt's luck may have changed when a serve from lefty Elnaeim struck the net cord and bobbled over to give his team a two-point advantage, 16-14, at the second TTO.

Puerto Rico were struggling to hold their attacking rhythm, and a mistake from Jose Rivera gave Egypt a three-point cushion at 21-18. When Elnaeim made it 22-19 with a blistering, angled spike from the right, Puerto Rico called a TO.

Despite the efforts of Soto, Egypt had the momentum and won the third set 25-21. Elnaeim brought up set point with a trademark winner down the middle, and a strong serve from Youssef did the rest.

Egypt came out for the fourth set with renewed vigour and confidence, whereas Puerto Rico had gone quiet and were still in a state of malaise and failing to end the match in three.

The Egyptians blocked and attacked with all their might, and Elnaeim took them into the first technical break with a four-point lead thanks to a crashing winner from the right at the top of his leap that drew gasps and applause from the neutral fans.

Youssef was also playing a major part in the revival, and Elnaeim thundered another right-wing winner for 16-14 at the second TTO. An agile set by Hassan teed up Ossama Bekheit for a clean winner at the net, and Egypt powered on to take the fourth set 25-20 for 2-2 when Puerto Rico's serving collapsed. Soto had been removed from the attack with his team down 21-17, such was the changing complexion of the match.

Soto was back for the tie-break, though, following his rest. Indeed, the whole team looked refreshed and jumped out to a 3-0 lead, forcing an Egypt TO.

Behind some whistling serves from Elnaeim and a fine block by Hassan on Victor Rivera, Egypt led 8-5 at the turnaround. Elnafrawy at the net and captain Hamdy Awad on the left extended Egypt's lead to 11-7, forcing a Puerto Rico TO, and Bekheit rose at the net to hammer home a loose ball on the restart, 12-7.

Soto and sub Alexis Matias won the next four points between them to close the gap to 12-11, but Egypt skipper Awad ended the skid with a huge blow on the left for 13-11. On match point at 14-12, a slow serve from Awad caused confusion and ended the match, 15-12 and 3-2 Egypt.

Fantastic France shock champs Brazil

France roared back from a first-set loss to stun defending chamions Brazil 3-1 in the battle of the Pool B favourites on Sunday at the Marine Messe stadium in Fukuoka.

Raising their game to near perfection in all aspects, the French had the normally fluid Brazilians sprawling to score a 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 29-27 victory in their crucial FIVB Volleyball World Championship for Men clash.

A Brazilian infringement that ended the match was no justice to the quality put on by both teams and kept the excited crowd on the edge of their seats.

France looked second best in the opening set against the seemingly unbeatable South Americans but came together as a team over the next three sets to take their record to 3-0 in the group.

Olympic champions Brazil fell to 2-1, with this single defeat putting them under immense pressure to make the semi-finals when they take their expected place in the second round in Hiroshima.

The Brazilians must now beat Australia and Germany in their last two matches if they want to travel to Hiroshima with a decent chance of making the final four.

France, who have also beaten Greece and Australia, take on Germany and Cuba in their final two games.

The defending champions who took the early initiative, grabbing an 8-4 lead at the first technical time-out.

Everything Brazil did seemed to have a devastating effect on France, whose next four points came from Brazilian errors.

Andre Nascimento was smoking on the right side of attack for Brazil while Dante Amaral and the popular Gilberto "Giba" Godoy was also troubling France.

Even reliable French spiker Frantz Granvarko was unable to make an impact, deprived of scoring opportunities or simply banging in vain against a solid Brazilian defence.

Brazil were fully worth their 16-10 second TTO lead but suddenly lost their way. Granvorka finally came to life with two thundering right-wing efforts and Brazil mistakes allowed France to pull to 17-15 before Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende called time out.

Gerald Hardy, replacing the injured Oliver Kieffer, gave Brazil five set points with a spike that hit the net. Though he saved one himself, Brazil took the set when Guillaume Samica fired wide.

Romain Vadeleux stepped up for France with his team's first two points of the second set while Hardy was also trying to lift his team, helping them to a narrow 8-7 lead.

Though they were up against it, France were not about to let Brazil be as dominant as they were in the first set.

Samica, Valedeux and Granvorka nailed specatuclar winners to edge ahead 16-15, with Brazil having Nascimento and Giba to earn their points on a regular basis.

France gained a two-point lead at 18-16 and then stretched it to three, 23-20, before Brazil called time out. It was then four set points for France on a Brazilian error, and another Brazil time out.

Brazil saved two, prompting a French time out. But captain Stephane Antiga calmed French nerves with the spike that gave them the set and levelled the scores.

Nascimento pounded winners for Brazil but France doggedly matched their opponents through Granvorka, Vadeleux and Samica to go 8-7 ahead at the start of the third set.

A rare Nascimento miss put France 14-12 ahead but Gustavo Endres brought Brazil level with a stomping block on Samica.

But it was Endres' error that put France 16-14 in front at the second TTO.

The gangly Dante Amaral, who played a central role in Brazil's two previous matches, was drifting left against France to support Giba. France, though, kept their attacks to the opposite wing through Granvorka and Antiga.

France, with setter Pierre Pujols controlling play, moved up a gear to take a 20-17 lead though Giba and Rodrigo Santana tried to keep Brazil within striking distance.

Nascimento reduced it to 21-20 and Granvorka's wild swing helped Brazil tie it at 21-21.

A master substitution by France saw Xavier Kapfer send down a sizzling serve that Vadeleux put away to give France two set points. Vadeleux then won the set for France as they took a crucial 2-1 lead.

With their confidence up, France hit back from 4-1 down in the fourth set to take an 8-7 lead into the first TTO after Giba slapped wide.

The French maintained their momentum, causing panic in the Brazilian ranks, as they surged 18-13 in front and then 21-16.

World and Olympic champions, though, don't roll over and die with Brazil coming back to 21-21, and then take the lead, as the French started to become nervous.

Endres' long serve gave France match point but an error made it deuce. Brazil then took set point but Garcia's serve weakly nestled in the net.

Granvorka gave France their second match point after great work by libero Jean-Francois Exiga but, as so often is the case, a serving error, this time by Pierre Pujols, deuced it again.

A Brazilian foul, on the third match point, finally gave France one of their most famous victories.
