it is result ...

We are in a spot of bother. Is that because we are on a losing streak? No, but it is because we are drawing ’some’ matches that we are expected to win and we are not able to score fluently as we used to. So is this a crisis? With my understanding of the game and life, it is certainly not. Before we go to the reasons for the spot for this bother, let’s see where we are at this period of mid-january:

1. Second in the Premiership with just six points behind Man Utd.
2. In the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League after topping a difficult group that had the defending champions
3. In the semi-finals of the League Cup with an advantageous home leg to be played
4. In the round of 16 in the FA Cup
5. An unbeaten streak of 13 matches

Same time last season when Man Utd were trailing us by 15 points, did you hear anyone say that Man Utd are in a crisis? With Arsenal consistently under-performing since we out-throned them, how many used the word ‘crisis’? The last time Liverpool won the league was 16 bloody years back. They have not won the FA Premier League since its inception. A decade of crisis? No. Why is that when Chelsea is in a 13-match unbeaten streak, this is being called a crisis? Believe it or not. The Press loves to write about Chelsea. They want to find some story or the other on Chelsea, or if they dont find one, they create one.

Now, what are the reasons why we are in a spot of bother? Many might disagree but I’m very clear that the points we have dropped were not because of the under-performance of the new signings. We have been dropping points not because we are unable to score but because we keep conceding. In fact, I would appreciate Jose’s astute signing of Hilario, when everyone thought it is a useless transfer. He is completely vindicated. A month after the closure of the transfer window, Cech and Cudicini are stretchered off in the same match and imagine there is no other goalkeeper in the squad. It would have been a disaster, we would be in a bigger deficit by this time.

Losing Cech and Cudicini on the same day is a big loss not only on the field but also off the field. I’m sure it must have been a huge dent on the confidence on the Chelsea players. I know that many fans of other clubs had already written off Chelsea’s chances. The team has shown tremendous steel and courage to come out of the terrible shock and surviving a tough period. Hilario is an average goalkeeper but I’m sure he has done better than what the third choice goalkeeper of other teams would have done.

He showed no nerves in making his debut in the Champions League match against defending champions Barca. To lose Robben, the live wire winger who was getting back on form, and then losing John Terry, the heart of our Chelsea defence, and then Boulahrouz, the only other central defender just when he had played his best 30 minutes . . . I’m reminded of the Murphy’s law - when things ‘can’ go wrong, it ‘will’.

What are the chances of losing two first choice keepers and two central defenders in a space of a couple of months, before this season, I would have said none, unless they all travel in the same car and meet with an accident! And never ever say that Jose released Gallas. William Gallas wanted to leave at any cost, for no reason. I would never try to retain an unmotivated, revolting player with a negative influence on the rest of the team.

The whole team deserves a big round of applause for where we are now. After we lost half a dozen players (all of them are crucial), many players had to play out of position. With Cech in goal, Terry, Carvalho, Ashley and Khalid/Geremi in the back, the under-performance of Sheva or Ballack would not have hurt us at all. Because, we were playing so well that for the intial couple of months, we were able to make up with their start-up time. I dont expect Jose to predict that we would lose two goalkeepers and two central defenders and a winger, all in few months.

Drogba has been brilliant but the credit should go to the whole team who have withstood this difficult period without losing too many points. All this talk like “but for Drogba, Chelsea would be tottering etc” is all rubbish. There are always one or two strong performers in any team any season. What is Arsenal without Henry in all those seasons? Where would Man Utd be if Ronaldo was injured for months on the first day of the season? Last two seasons, I think the ‘restless fans’ of Chelsea would have been hunting for Drogba’s head, calling him as ‘Jose’s blunder’, “waste of space’, ‘waste of money’ and wanting him to be sold. I hope they are all happy with his performance this season.

I’m a big fan of the Special One. Jose knows. He won us the back-to-back titles. He thinks ahead of most people and thats why his current day decisions may not be appealing to some people. The club is thinking big in terms of the world market and big name players. He is one way or the other forced to sign big players for the benefit of the club. Talk is always about a team of big players and internationals in the Chelsea team. Can you imagine how difficult it is to motivate a bunch of players who have tasted a lot of success already?

The very fact that we have won back-to-back titles will mean that we may not be as hungry for success as we were in the last two seasons. Jose has managed to keep the hunger of the team intact by creating this desire of winning all the trophies. Press might call it arrogance. In my eyes, this is the only feat that might really interest most of the already-successful international players, so it is Jose’ way of motivating the big names. If there is one manager who has the strong personality to manage well-established stars, superstars and internationals, that is Jose Mourinho. His tactical acumen need not be proven. Four league titles, one uefa cup, two domestic cups, one champions league - and all this in 6 six years. If Jose leaves Chelsea, that will be very very unfortunate for Chelsea.

My favourite Jose quote, when asked if he is under pressure:

Pressure . . what pressure? Pressure is for millions of parents who cannot feed their children

Pure genius.

I love the belief and support of the Liverpool fans. Even when they were 1-5 down at the Anfield, they were singing and cheering their team till the end of the match. No league title in 16 years and they support their club like crazy. Chelsea deserves such kind of fans and not the kind of restless glory-hunting kids. As a fan I would criticise but would never abuse like some of the so-called ‘fans’ now do. And I believe. If there is no such thing called belief, there won’t be fans for most of the clubs in football.

I still believe that we can win all four. Even if we end up with no trophies this year, I’m ready to back my team. After all there can be only one winner and you cannot always be the one, even though you want to. I’m proud of Chelsea and our lion-hearted players and our aggressive and intelligent manager and our visionary owner. I’ll support Chelsea, whichever league we’re in.

هفته*نامه كيكر آلمان در گزارشي عنوان كرد: بالاك بدترين بازي دورانش را براي چلسي در هفته جاري، مقابل ليورپول انجام داد.

از ابتداي فصل جاري كه بالاك از بايرن به چلسي پيوست، هيچگاه سابقه نداشت چنين بازي ضعيفي را ارائه دهد.

Andriy Shevchenko broke a seven-week drought on Tuesday with two goals which helped send champions Chelsea to the final of the English League Cup with a 4-0 victory over fourth division Wycombe Wanderers.

Frank Lampard, captain in the absence of injured John Terry, scored the other two in the second half.

Shevchenko, whose poor form since his 29 million pound ($57.54 million) transfer from AC Milan last May has prompted a raft of headlines in recent weeks about tension in the Chelsea camp, looked lively from the start of the second-leg game.

After flicking a chance wide in the second minute and having a shot blocked in the 14th, Shevchenko picked up a poorly directed pass from midfielder Tommy Doherty, 30 metres out. He ran at advancing Wycombe keeper Ricardo Baptista and flicked the ball low into the bottom corner of the net in the 22nd minute.

It was Shevchenko's first goal since Dec. 5 and prompted coach Jose Mourinho to leap from the home dugout with his fists pumping in celebration.

STRONG SIDE

Mourinho had fielded a strong side against the lowly club who forced a 1-1 draw in the home leg two weeks ago, playing Shevchenko from the start rather than using him as substitute has he has done in recent weeks.

Two minutes before halftime, Shevchenko justified that opportunity again when strike partner Didier Drogba chipped the ball forward and, with Wycombe defenders wrong-footed and clamouring for offside, the Ukrainian lifted it deftly over Baptista.

The London side, who won the League Cup two years ago to earn Mourinho his first English trophy, took control in the second half and it was only Ricardo Baptista's keeping and sloppy finishing from the home side that kept the scoreline in check.

Chelsea put the tie beyond doubt in the 68th minute when England midfielder Lampard capitalised on some scrappy defending, rounding Wycombe's back line and Baptista, who had run out of his area, to coolly slot home.

Wycombe, who put Premier League sides Fulham and Charlton out of the competition in earlier rounds, tried to push forward but they left yawning gaps at the back. In the 90th minute Lampard took full advantage running down the middle to receive a pinpoint pass from Drogba and notch his second.

Mourinho substituted Shevchenko late in the game, greeting him with a thumbs up and handshake in stark contrast to recent matches where their contact appeared decidedly frosty.

Chelsea will meet Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur in an all-London final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Feb. 25.

Manager Jose Mourinho said he expected to remain at Chelsea next season after the champions beat fourth division Wycombe Wanderers 4-0 on Tuesday and 5-1 on aggregate to earn a place in next month's League Cup final.

The controversial coach, at the centre of barrage of media speculation that he might leave the club after disagreements with billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, also praised under-performing striker Andriy Shevchenko who scored twice for his first goals in seven weeks.

Mourinho told a news conference injured captain John Terry, who could be back in the side next week, was close to signing a new contract and had asked his manager whether he planned to stay next season.

"I told him, I think so," Mourinho said.

The Portuguese, who has led Chelsea to back to back titles since his arrival in 2004, has struggled with injuries to his squad in recent weeks and wanted to buy some cover but Chelsea's board has been reluctant to spend more money.

Chelsea have fallen six points behind Manchester United in the Premier League leading to more tension, especially over Shevchenko, who is a friend of Abramovich but who Mourinho has often left on the bench.

On Tuesday, Mourinho said of the former European player of the year: "He was brilliant in the game. His attitude was very good . In this (match) he won the right to be in the lineup for Sunday."

Mourinho greeted Shevchenko with a warm handshake when he came off in contrast to previous games where he was ignored.

"If they work and they perform I love them, if they do not work and they do not perform, I hate them," he explained.

"Sometimes you kiss, sometimes you kick," he said. "I don't kick, I ignore. He is a good boy, he needs happiness. I think this game can give him bit of happiness."

Mourinho added: "He accepts my philosophy as his philosophy. It's a process not a click. He is arriving where we want him to arrive...I'm very happy Sheva got the message."

Chelsea play Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur in the final on Feb. 25 and are also in the hunt for silverware in the FA Cup, in which they play Nottingham Forest in the fourth round on Sunday and in the Champions League.

Andriy Shevchenko got back in Jose Mourinho's good books as his double strike sent Chelsea through to the League Cup final with a 4-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.

Shevchenko had been frozen out by Mourinho in recent weeks after failing to live up to his 30 million pounds price tag, but he went some way to redeeming himself with two clinical finishes against the visitors from the fourth tier of English professional football.

Former AC Milan striker Shevchenko, making just his second start of 2007, also set up the first of Frank Lampard's two goals in a semi-final second leg victory that sealed a 5-1 aggregate triumph.

Afterwards Mourinho paid tribute to Shevchenko, telling Sky Sports: "I demand commitment, effort, being aggressive, working and playing for the team, working with the ball, working without the ball - that's what I demand.

"He did that, scored two goals, created some more. He was alive all the time while on the pitch. I think it's a step forward in the direction of how we want him to play and perform on the pitch.

"The team is happy with him. It's not just about me being happy with him."

Shevchenko, speaking in halting English, added: "Good game. I'm very happy to reach the final. It's important the team plays very, very well.

"I'm happy for the victory of the team today. The support of this team and fans has been unbelievable."

Shevchenko's treatment has been central to a reported breakdown in relations between Mourinho and Roman Abramovich, Chelsea's billionaire Russian owner.

But Lampard praised the way Shevchenko had handled a difficult situation.

"You've got to give the man a lot of credit for his dignity because he hasn't come out and spoken too much."

Shevchenko was the only player ignored by Mourinho when he consoled his players as they walked off the pitch after Saturday's defeat against Liverpool, further fuelling talk of a rift between the Ukrainian and his manager.

But, despite not scoring since December 5, Shevchenko was granted a chance in a full-strength Chelsea side that also included Ricardo Carvalho, fit after recovering from a fever.

Shevchenko should have given Chelsea the lead after less than a minute when Ashley Cole's cross from the left picked him out, but he headed tamely wide from no more than six yards.

Wycombe had belied their League Two status when they battled to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Adams Park.

But the breakthrough that Chelsea's dominance deserved arrived after 22 minutes and it was Shevchenko who finally delivered.

Wycombe had only themselves to blame though as midfielder Tommy Doherty's careless pass gifted possession to Shevchenko, who gratefully accepted the chance to surge into the penalty area and slide his shot past Batista.

Chelsea's defence has been much-maligned in recent weeks and they were exposed when Doherty swung in a cross moments after Shevchenko's goal, but Tommy Mooney could only scuff his far-post shot wide.

That was a rare incursion into the Chelsea area for Wycombe and their task was made almost impossible just before half-time.

Michael Ballack lifted a pass over the visitors' defence and Shevchenko sprinted clear before stabbing a clinical strike into the net from 12 yards.

Any doubts that Chelsea would clinch a second League Cup final appearance in three years were erased when Shevchenko set up his side's third goal in the 69th minute.

He lofted a long ball forward and, as Batista charged out of his goal, Lampard chipped over Sam Stockley and knocked the ball into an empty net.

Lampard put the seal on a much-needed win for the English champions as he tapped-in Drogba's cross in injury-time.

Robben Can Leave Chelsea; Shevchenko to Get Chance: Roundup

ROBBEN CAN LEAVE, SHEVCHENKO GETS CHANCE

Chelsea's Arjen Robben will be allowed to leave the Premiership champion at the end of the season because manager Jose Mourinho has lost patience with the Dutch winger, the Sun said.

Mourinho believes Robben, who is 23 today, has shown a lack of fight this campaign as Chelsea struggles to defend its league title. He suggested after a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Jan. 20, in which Robben suffered an ankle injury, that the player is ``normally'' out for a long time.

Chelsea, aiming to win the Premiership for a third straight season, trails leader Manchester United by six points.

Mourinho will give striker Andriy Shevchenko another chance to prove himself in today's League Cup semifinal second-leg match against League Two team Wycombe, according to the Daily Express. The teams drew 1-1 in the opening game.

Shevchenko, who joined in the off-season for a reported 31 million pounds ($61.5 million), made his last start on Jan. 6. He hasn't scored in 10 games.

CABORN TO MEET PREMIER LEAGUE

U.K. Sports Minister Richard Caborn will address the Premier League on Feb. 8 to propose a cap on spending, the Express reported. He wants a maximum of 75 percent of a club's revenue to be spent on players' salaries, in addition to greater controls on agents and transfers, the paper said.

O'LEARY PAYOFF

Former Aston Villa manager David O'Leary, who left the club in July by ``mutual consent'' following an inquiry into player unrest, will receive compensation of up to 1 million pounds, the Express said.

WEST HAM

West Ham will today sign Sevilla striker Kepa Blanco, 23, on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy the player, the Sun said. Vitesse Arnhem defender Ruud Knol, 26, is also a 1 million-pound target, while the Hammers are considering making an improved offer for Birmingham center-back Matthew Upson, the paper added.

Championship leader Derby County wants to sign West Ham fullback Tyrone Mears on loan, according to the Sun, while Everton bid 2 million pounds for West Ham winger Matthew Etherington, the Daily Mirror reported.

Everton manager David Moyes has targeted a new striker after nine-goal top-scorer Andy Johnson was ruled out for up to six weeks with a chipped bone in his right ankle, according to the Daily Mail.

TRANSFERS

Tottenham is set to sign Benfica center-back Ricardo Rocha after the clubs agreed to a 3.3 million-pound fee, the Sun said. Spurs also bid 8 million pounds for Southampton defender Gareth Bale, who prefers a move to Manchester United, the paper added.

Fulham hopes to sign Celtic forward Shaun Maloney, 23, for 500,000 pounds after failing to agree to terms with Tottenham for on-loan winger Wayne Routledge, the Sun reported. Maloney is out of contract at the end of the season, the paper said.

Fulham also bid 500,000 pounds for Preston goalkeeper Carlo Nash, 33, according to the Mail. Manager Chris Coleman wants cover while Antti Niemi recovers from a neck injury, the paper said.

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd has this month given trials to 25 players from three continents as he attempts to bolster his squad, the Mirror reported. The club, which recorded its only league win in November, is last in the 20-team Premiership.

Jose Mourinho insists his defensive problems were largely to blame for Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Two goals in the first 20 minutes from Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant saw Liverpool claim a thoroughly deserved three points.

"First of all it is obvious that we have a big defensive mistake as the players are not adapted in the positions," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"I was waiting for 15 to 20 minutes - no goals and then confidence arriving and people adapting but when the team is fragile, on the pitch and mentally, to consider a goal in the first few minutes of the game is difficult.

"The second half we played better and we had the ball and created some chances and if we had the luck of the game, you create pressure and score - but we didn't have that luck - Liverpool defended well and they know they can be dangerous because our defensive line if fragile."

"They had a good approach to the game," he said.

"They are not stupid, they are intelligent people and they know where our weak point is and they have to play through it - and that is why they played two big guys up-front, it is simple we cannot cope with it.

"My group of players is very short, but the group is mentally strong we are together and we are ready for the fight we have this season."

Mourinho was again coy on any possible arrivals in the transfer window.

"I don't want to speak about it, the market is open for ten days, but it has been open for the first 20 and we didn't get one [centre-half] - so why should we get one now?" he said.

"We have played all these games without central defenders, you can cope at home, in the Carling Cup, FA Cup, even in the Champions League it is easier to cope than the Premiership - but against Kuyt and Crouch, no - I knew 15 days ago Bellamy was not playing in this game."

Jose Mourinho has revealed Chelsea captain John Terry is close to agreeing a new contract.

Mourinho expects the deal - reportedly worth around £150,000 per week - to be finalised 'in the next few days'.

"John is almost signing a new contract," said Mourinho after Tuesday's Carling Cup semi-final victory over Wycombe.

"If he hasn't then he is doing that in the next few days."

The Portuguese coach also admitted that Terry had asked for an assurance he would still be Chelsea manager next season.

"He says it would be very difficult for him to play with another manager in his career and he would like to do it with me until the end of his career, it is because he accepts my philosophy as his," added Mourinho.

"He feels comfortable with the work we do."

Mourinho said that when asked asked outright by Terry if he would be remaining at Stamford Bridge next season, he had replied: "Yes [Terry asked]. My answer was 'I think so'."

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says problems behind the scenes have affected the form of the Premier League champions in recent weeks.

"You have got to look at our current results, they speak for themselves," the Ivory Coast international told the Guardian newspaper on Friday.

"From the moment when the board and the manager were not pulling in the same direction, that carried repercussions on the performance of the players."

Manager Jose Mourinho has recently been at the centre of a barrage of media speculation he might leave the club after disagreements with billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.
