Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is relishing the challenge of chasing Manchester United into the New Year, five points adrift but with a home game against the Premier League leaders still to play.

Speaking after a lacklustre 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday, Mourinho said with typical hauteur: "Of course I prefer to be top, but I'm enjoying the chase. It's a new experience for me to be second in December."

The Portuguese led Chelsea to two English championships in his first two seasons in London after securing the title at home in the previous two campaigns with Porto.

Mourinho said the gods had not been with Chelsea recently. They had hit the woodwork on numerous occasions rather than scoring, notably in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal last Sunday, and had suffered several doubtful refereeing decisions.

"But not to take it away from them. (Manchester United) deserve to be top of the league now and they are but there's a long time to go and we shall see," he said.

"I don't see it as five points I see it as two," Mourinho added.

"It's important in the four months before we play them we make up the two points," he noted, adding that the other three points were in Chelsea's hands. The top two drew 1-1 at Old Trafford last month.

The champions struggled to find scoring form against Newcastle and their blushes were spared by Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, rested on the bench because of a slight injury, who came on at halftime and scored in the 72nd minute.

"No doubt we should have played better but the points are the main thing," Mourinho said.

Central defender Ricardo Carvalho was pulled off at halftime because of an ankle injury and could be a doubt for Chelsea's next Premier League match at Everton on Saturday.

By then Carlo Cudicini should have recovered from a thigh muscle injury to replace Hilario in goal.

Chelsea and England captain John Terry has undergone surgery on his back injury, the Premiership champions annnounced in a statement.

The 26-year-old centre-half has not featured in the London club's last three Premiership matches, in which they have conceded six goals and fallen four points behind leaders Manchester United.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that today club captain John Terry underwent successful surgery following his back injury," said the Blues' statement.

"The operation took place in France following consultation between the Chelsea medical department and a leading neurosurgical specialist. The operation to remove a sequestrated lumbar intervertebral disc was successful and everyone at the club wishes John a speedy and full recovery."

It is unclear how long Terry's recovery will take but early indications are that he could return within weeks not months although whether he will be fit to lead England in their first match of 2007, against Spain at Old Trafford on February 7, remains to be seen.

As well as being without Terry, Jose Mourinho's men have also seen Petr Cech sidelined for most of this season after the inspirational goalkeeper suffered a fractured skull in a challenge with Reading's Stephen Hunt in October.

Chelsea have conceded 15 league goals so far this season - only seven fewer than they did over the whole of the last Premiership campaign.

Mourinho, having sold both William Gallas and Robert Huth, has admitted the continued absence of Terry has left him short of defensive options. The Portuguese boss has even considered asking 19-goal striker Didier Drogba to step into the role on an emergency basis.

"I do not like to play at centre-back - but I do it for the team because sometimes we have difficult moments in the game," Drogba said before admitting Chelsea needed to shore up their defence.

"We cannot give the other teams the belief that they can score, that they can win," he insisted. "Last season, and also two years ago, we were very strong when we scored one goal and they other teams could not think about coming back into the game."

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce has denied reports Chelsea are lining up an 18 million pounds (35 million dollars) bid for their England defender Micah Richards.

Chelsea are at home to Fulham in the west London derby on Saturday.

Chelsea captain John Terry has undergone a successful operation on his back.

Terry has missed the club's last four games with the complaint, but underwent surgery on the problem on Thursday.

The club have confirmed the operation was a success, but have not put a timescale on when the defender will be fit to return.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that today (Thursday) club captain John Terry underwent successful surgery following his back injury," read a statement on the club's official website.

During Terry's absence, Chelsea have kept just one clean sheet in four games - the 1-0 Carling Cup win over Newcastle United.

Reports suggest the likely timescale for Terry to return to the fray is between four and six weeks.

Chelsea played a 0-0 tie at Aston Villa on Tuesday night, failing to gain ground on Premier League leader Manchester United.

Chelsea (14-2-6), which failed to score in a league game for the first time this season, is six points behind Manchester United (17-2-3). Liverpool (12-6-4) is 14 points behind the leaders.

"Six points at the end of this disgraceful period is not bad and the way they fought, we are leaving with a lot of hopes for the second part of the season," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said.

Arsenal beat Charlton 4-0 behind Thierry Henry, who scored the first goal and set up another in his first game since November. The Gunners captain, who had been sidelined with a back injury, converted a penalty kick in the 29th minute after Osei Sankofa was ejected for fouling on Robin van Persie.

Henry fed Justin Hoyte for a goal in the 45th, and Van Persie scored the final two goals.

Premier League champions Chelsea are facing a defensive crisis and could face Wycombe in the League Cup semi-finals next week without a single recognised centre back. John Terry will not be fully recovered from back surgery until later in January, probably the next league game against Wigan Athletic on Jan. 13, while Khalid Boulahrouz will be out for at least a month after suffering knee ligament damage in Tuesday's goalless draw at Aston Villa.

Having sold William Gallas and Robert Huth pre-season, that leaves Chelsea with just Ricardo Carvalho for Saturday's FA Cup third round game against Macclesfield and he is then suspended for the first leg of the Wycombe semi on Jan. 10.

"For Wycombe we have nothing," Mourinho said after Tuesday's draw, their third of the holiday programme, that left the champions six points behind Manchester United, "so it is obvious we need someone".

The player shortage, and some poor quality defending in recent weeks, has led to media speculation that Chelsea will spend in the transfer window.

Mourinho, however, says that the club's extensive funding from Russian owner Roman Abramovich has led to opponents asking inflated prices for players.

"Just because of the smell that Chelsea need a central defender puts people thinking we are stupid," he said.

"I want to go into the market but I have told my top people that it is time for other clubs to look at us as a normal club.

"People want my players on loan or at sale prices. When I go for a player it is like being told an Aston Martin worth 250,000 pounds will cost me one million. Then I tell them 'goodbye'

"I am not speaking about Micah Richards (the Manchester City defender linked with a move to the champions) I am speaking generally. We are waiting and watching to see the reactions of other people and we are not crazy.

"My assistant Baltemar Brito is 55 and was a good central defender and I would rather play him than pay the crazy money."

The good news for Mourinho is that goalkeeper Petr Cech, who underwent surgery on a fractured skull in October, could be back in action by February.

Frank Lampard crushed Macclesfield's hopes of recording one of the greatest ever FA Cup shocks as his hat-trick inspired Chelsea to a 6-1 victory.

The England midfielder produced a consummate performance to book his side's place in the fourth round, but the late deluge of goals at Stamford Bridge should not detract from a plucky performance from the League Two side.

The Silkmen even had the temerity to level the scores at 1-1 through John Murphy before Lampard's brilliance and, more pertinently, the 47th-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Tommy Lee for a professional foul overwhelmed them.


Macclesfield were thus denied the one million pounds cash reward they had been promised by an online betting firm for beating Chelsea, but they returned to Cheshire with their honour intact.

For Jose Mourinho, there was only relief. Under normal circumstances, the visit of England's second-worst league club would prompt the Portuguese to give his Premiership regulars the afternoon off, but Chelsea's recent league jitters forced him to include Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho and, most significantly, Andriy Shevchenko.

For all Chelsea's early control, the visitors' goal was hardly under siege. It took 12 minutes for Chelsea to muster a shot - Shevchenko's scuffed effort drawing a comfortable save from Lee - and Mourinho cut an agitated figure on the sidelines.

His bad humour was soothed, however, by a familiar face. Lampard appeared to be on a personal mission to ensure Chelsea were not embarrassed and, in the 16th minute, he swept his side ahead after Salomon Kalou's cross had deflected off Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The goal calmed Chelsea's nerves and Macclesfield began to wobble. The champions thought they had forged further ahead when Carvalho thumped in from close range after Shevchenko's free-kick had only been parried by Lee, but the visitors were saved by an offside flag.

But Chelsea's new-found confidence bred complacency. In the 39th minute, Carvalho should have cleared Matt McNeil's nod-down but the ball skidded under his foot on the greasy surface. Murphy seized the loose ball, tore towards goal and thumped a low shot between Hilario's legs.

Murphy's strike sparked bedlam among Town's travelling fans and their team seemed equally shell-shocked. That probably explained why, moments later, they allowed Lampard to gallop forward and crack a skidding shot into the bottom corner.

That restored order, and just after half-time Macclesfield's fading hopes were blown apart. Wright-Phillips set clear Shevchenko with a cute pass but the Ukrainian's run was checked by the sprawling Lee, who was shown the inevitable red card by referee Lee Mason.

Paul Ince, the Macclesfield manager, had dangerously opted against naming a reserve goalkeeper among his substitutes, so it was left to Dave Morley, the captain, to don the green jersey. He was powerless to prevent Lampard completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot and Chelsea duly turned the screw.

Wright-Phillips clipped in Lampard's precise cross in the 66th minute, John Obi Mikel crunched in his first Chelsea goal with a glorious half-volley from the edge of the penalty area and finally Carvalho drilled in a deflected shot to leave Macclesfield beaten but not bowed.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has brushed off concerns over the Premiership champions' dip in form.

Having dropped points in three successive Premiership draws, The Blues trail challengers Manchester United by six points.

Chelsea's stumble has even led to speculation surrounding the future of Jose Mourinho, with reports claiming the previously untouchable Portuguese could leave the club in the summer.

Kenyon, though, is quick to defuse talk of a crisis.

"You've got to look where we are today," said Kenyon, who was in Beijing to launch Chelsea's Mandarin language website.

"We're second in the league by six points halfway through the season with arguably the toughest part of the season still to come.

"We qualified top of the group in the Champions League which, again, was arguably one of the toughest groups.

"We're in the semi-final of the (League) cup and got through the third round of the FA Cup.

"So if we're overly concerned about that position, there's a lot more people who should be more concerned.

"I think you've got to put it into perspective. Would you rather be six points clear? Of course. But this is not the end of the season and this is not doom and gloom.

"I think we're in a very good position with a very strong squad."
