    • Chelsea set up a dream FA Cup final against Manchester United at the New Wembley on Sunday but needed an extra-time goal by Michael Ballack to beat a spirited Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in a pulsating Old Trafford semi-final.

Chelsea took a deserved first-half lead through Frank Lampard but Blackburn stormed back after the break to level through Jason Roberts before Germany midfielder Ballack drove in the winner in the 19th minute of extra time.

Chelsea were the last team to win the FA Cup at the old Wembley in 2000 and manager Jose Mourinho heads to the new stadium aiming for his first victory in the competition and still on course for an unprecedented quadruple.

"It's a big, big final, between first and second in Premier League, between two semi-finalists in the Champions League," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

Chelsea, who had already beaten Blackburn three times this season in the League and League Cup, settled quickly and took the lead in the 16th minute when Ballack sent Lampard through to clinically clip an angled effort past Brad Friedel.

Andriy Shevchenko wasted a chance to put the game out of Blackburn's reach at the start of the second half by comically missing his kick when Drogba presented him with an empty net.

Blackburn made him pay when Roberts scored his first goal for the club when he cleverly diverted a low Pedersen free-kick in the 64th minute.

Hughes should have won the game in normal time but Pedersen headed wide from Bentley's cross and Cech made an impressive save to prevent a John Terry own goal.

      "SPECIAL FEELING"

Ballack eventually settled it and there was still time for Michael Essien to strike the bar with a superb long range shot.

"It's a very special feeling, I think the game was amazing," Mourinho said. "It was the kind of game where you win you are crazy with happiness but you have a lot of thoughts for your opponents.

"They gave us a game - it was not a surprise to me I was waiting for this - they fought like heroes."

United made it through to their record 18th FA Cup final by beating Watford 4-1 on Saturday.

        • Chelsea want to scare Liverpool with their attacking football in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final, coach Jose Mourinho said.

Chelsea need only a draw at Anfield to reach the final in Athens on May 23, against Manchester United or AC Milan, after winning last week's first leg 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

But Mourinho, who has lost striker Andriy Shevchenko to a groin injury picked up in training, ruled out playing a defensive, tactical game, telling a news conference on Monday: "We will attack.

"We know that if we don't concede any goals we are in the final ... and that if we score goals we have an advantage. You cannot defend perfectly for 90 minutes.

"A very good way to play this game is to scare the opponent. And if you can score goals it would be very good."

Chelsea know they will be in for an electric atmosphere at Anfield, similar to the one in which Liverpool beat them 1-0 to reach a victorious Champions League final two years ago.

Though he accepted the home advantage, Mourinho said: "The players have a lot of motivation and they are more than ready to face the circumstances.

"You couldn't have a bigger motivation than to play in the Champions League final."

Mourinho believes his Spanish counterpart will hope to exploit the absence through injury of Chelsea's central defender Ricardo Carvalho, whose place is expected to go to Michael Essien.

"Carvalho was our best defender for the whole season.," Mourinho said.

"He played every game at a high level and with a big part of the season without Petr Cech behind him and another part with no John Terry beside him ... and he was a pillar. To miss him in such a big game is a big blow.

"Rafa is a good manager. He has a player who's two metres tall, he knows Carvalho is not playing -- I think he's intelligent if he plays a direct game to Peter Crouch.

"I think that's obvious and we know that. We have to do our best and part of our game must be that when we have the ball, to scare and score."

Asked if he was happy about referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez being a compatriot of Benitez, Chelsea's Portuguese coach said: "I prefer a top Spanish referee than a bad referee from another nationality ... I want to believe that he comes here to do a professional job, without heart."

                  • Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a heated exchange with referee Graham Poll as the Premiership's deposed champions drew, 0-0, with new title holders Manchester United on Wednesday.

Poll booked seven players in a meaningless game. The Red Devils clinched the Premiership crown when Chelsea failed to defeat Arsenal on Sunday.

Mourinho was angry with Poll toward the end of the match after Claude Makelele of Chelsea had fouled United striker Wayne Rooney, who came on as a substitute.

The row added spice to an otherwise tepid affair, as both managers stuck by the pre-match promises - Mourinho to get his players to form a guard of honor for United's new title winners and Ferguson to rest most of his key players.

Ferguson handed China international Dong Fangzhou his debut. Fangzhou showed a lack of finishing power as he failed to react to a low cross by Chris Eagles.

Eagles was involved in the most contentious incident of the opening half when he was brutally hacked down by Mikel John Obi.

Chelsea looked dangerous on the break, and a shot by Shaun Wright-Phillips skimmed the United goal with goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak scrambling backwards.

A couple of headers from Wes Brown kept Chelsea out before Kuszczak saved from both Wright-Phillips and Salomon Kalou.

Rooney came on with 15 minutes left and his arrival immediately livened up the game.

Mourinho dived out of his dugout to remonstrate with the referee after Makelele fouled the United man. For a moment, it appeared the exchange had resulted in Chelsea's coach being banished to the stands, only for fourth official Mark Clattenburg to call him back after a long chat with Mourinho's assistant Steve Clarke.

Lassana Diarra tested Kuszczak's agility with a curling shot nine minutes from time, but the Polish goalkeeper was equal to it as the game petered out.

                      • Joe Cole has warned Manchester United to prepare for a Chelsea side which is at its best when the odds are stacked against it.

Jose Mourinho's side will have its backs to the wall against United in the FA Cup final because of a crippling injury list that includes striker Andriy Shevchenko, midfielder Michael Ballack and defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Chelsea also is waiting anxiously for updates on left-back Ashley Cole, winger Arjen Robben and midfielder Mikel John Obi. All three have an outside chance of being fit to face United in Saturday's first FA Cup final at the new Wembley.

Joe Cole insists Chelsea performs better against the odds and that United will have no easy ride.

"I think we are at our best with our backs to the wall," he said. We've had a lot to contend with this year but we're not complaining. We've had our injury problems this year but we want to put that aside and get on with the game.

"It's a case of 11 players being chosen who are the 11 players the gaffer thinks can do the job. We have to put all our injuries and problems to one side and win our second trophy of the season, which would be a massive achievement."

Cole doesn't expect anyone to have sympathy for his team's plight, either.

"Nobody will be crying any tears for us because of the big squad and the quality players we've got," he said. "We'll just approach it like any other big game."

Cole was sidelined himself but had targeted this time of the season for his return.

"People didn't expect me to be back, so any game is a bonus," he said. "Every day when I've been injured, it's always been focusing on one of the finals. I knew I couldn't come back and influence the Premier League because it was too late, so I knew it was either the Champions League or the FA Cup.

"It all boils down to winning this trophy. Everything I have focused on since late November when I had my injury is for the FA Cup. I want to win it and have something to take from the season. It's huge. The manager, myself and a lot of the boys haven't won it before, it's a huge one."

Robben is struggling to recover fully from knee surgery and has not trained since his substitute appearance in the Champions League semifinal loss at Anfield. His missed penalty shot helped Liverpool beat the Blues at the same stage for the second time in three years.

Robben hopes he will be fit enough for a place on the bench. From there, he will at least get to watch another wing wonder in action - United's Ryan Giggs.

The Dutchman admits he was a big fan of the Wales star when he was a youngster in Holland and said that Giggs can still win games on his own for United.

"I have a big respect for his career," Robben said. "When I was younger and started to watch English football a little bit more I was quite a fan of him. He's had a great career and even now even though he's 34, he looks so fit and sharp still."

Robben does not believe United is favored to lift the trophy because it reclaimed the Barclays Premiership crown this season.

"It's a one-off game," he said. "Both teams can win it. We have to make sure we're ready for it. It's a big, big day for both sets of fans but also for all football fans around the world. It's going to be a great day.

"It's great to play at the new Wembley. It's going to be packed with 90,000 people. It's going to be a massive game with people watching all over the world."

                          • Portugal international Ricardo Carvalho celebrated his 29th birthday by signing a five-year contract with Chelsea.

                            Financial terms were not disclosed.

However, Carvalho has been ruled out of Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United due to a knee injury.

"We are delighted that Riccy has committed himself to us for the next five years," Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said. "He has been a key player for us since he joined and has been in fantastic form this season. Without doubt he is one of the best central defenders in the world.

"The only shame is that he will miss tomorrow's (Saturday's) game through injury and we are all sorry for that."

Carvalho followed manager Jose Mourinho to Chelsea in the summer of 2004 after helping Porto to the Champions League crown in May. Carvalho led the Blues to successive Barclays Premiership titles on his arrival and formed a commanding central defensive partnership with England captain John Terry.

Although this season has seen the Londoners relinquish their title, Mourinho has singled out his countryman for special praise after maintaining his form despite being forced to play alongside a string of different partners due to injuries at Stamford Bridge.

However, Carvalho will not have the chance to add to his Carling Cup winners medal at Wembley Saturday due to ligament damage suffered against Bolton last month.

                            • Chelsea has a chance for redemption Saturday when the FA Cup final returns to Wembley.

The Blues finished six points behind Manchester United in the Premier League and lost to Liverpool in the Champions League semifinals. Its success in the League Cup so far has been the only payoff for owner Roman Abramovich's preseason investment in striker Andriy Shevchenko and midfielder Michael Ballack.

Chelsea won the last FA Cup final at the old Wembley stadium in 2000, and a victory in the first at the rebuilt arena would go a long way toward securing coach Jose Mourinho's job for next season and restoring some much-needed optimism to the west London club.

"I wouldn't say it is revenge, because it is just a one-off game," Chelsea wing Arjen Robben said. "But it is going to be a big game with a great atmosphere, and that's why we have to show the whole world how good our game can be."

And the game certainly will be big.

A sellout crowd of 90,000 will fill the rebuilt $1.58 billion Wembley to watch only the third final between teams finishing 1-2 in the top flight of the English league.

"Games like Saturday's are the kind that you work so hard for in training every day," Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic said. "Matches against big teams and big players on the biggest stage. It'll be great to be involved in a game that will go down in history."

The last time the top two teams met in the Cup final was in 1986, when Liverpool played Everton. If United is looking for omens, red-shirted Liverpool beat blue-clad Everton 3-1 to clinch a league and cup double.

If United adds to its record 11 FA Cup wins, it will take the double for a fourth time -- more than any other team.

Chelsea, however, can draw comfort from its recent record against United. Mourinho has won five of his 10 matches against United, while United's Alex Ferguson can claim just a single victory.

This season's league meetings both ended in ties, with a second-string United side playing Chelsea to a scoreless tie at Stamford Bridge on May 9 after the Premier League title already had been clinched.

The FA Cup is the only English title to have eluded Mourinho in his three years with Chelsea, with successive Premier League titles and two League Cups.

His confident demeanor has been shaken this season as player injuries, poor form and, most recently, personal troubles contributed to a disappointing campaign. This week, Mourinho attracted headlines for his arrest in an argument over his dog.

Defender Ricardo Carvalho, Shevchenko and Ballack are among the Chelsea players out with injuries, with left-back Ashley Cole and midfielder John Obi Mikel also in doubt. Mourinho even made the lighthearted suggestion that third-string goalkeeper Hilario could play as a substitute striker.

United will be without striker Louis Saha and captain Gary Neville, so Alan Smith may start up front and Wes Brown is likely to play at right back.

Although United has won plaudits for its attacking style, a key will be its ability to defend Didier Drogba, who scored a league-high 20 goals.

"Drogba is a great player who has scored a lot of goals and it'll be tough to play against him," Vidic said. "A team isn't just about one player. It doesn't matter who plays because they have great quality. I just hope I can do my job well."
