Milan's Kaka considers quitting Italian football

AC Milan midfielder Kaka has indicated he could look to quit Italy because of the football-related violence and scandals which have affected the game.

Kaka is currently training with Brazil as they prepare for a double-header of 2010 World Cup qualifiers but has voiced his concern for the future of the sport in Italy and has warned that it could lose it's credibility.

Italian football has been thrown back in the spotlight following the death of a Lazio fan at the weekend.

Gabriele Sandri was accidentally shot dead by a policeman during scuffles between Lazio and Juventus fans and sparked violent clashes in several Italian cities while a handful of matches were abandoned.

Lazio's match with Inter Milan was subsequently postponed as a result of Sandri's death as was Roma's contest with Cagliari. Both matches have been re-scheduled for Dec 5.

A decision is yet to be made on when Atalanta's match with AC Milan will be rescheduled. That fixture was stopped after seven minutes because of crowd disturbances in Bergamo.

"It's not the first time that this has happened," Kaka said. "Last year there was a scandal in Italian football. There was also similar violence (to this year).

"These acts of violence risk keeping the star players and champions away from playing in Serie A. Italy is losing credibility.

"Sport is a leisure which should be played with pleasure. When it's not like that you have to find alternatives."

Kaka's current state of mind could alert many Premier League and La Liga clubs who have already expressed an interest in signing the playmaker.

His contract with Milan expires in 2011, but Real Madrid and Chelsea have already tried to prize Italy's highest-earning footballer away from the San Siro.

AC Milan star Kaka says he could be forced to quit Italian football if the violence continues.

There have been several instances of hooliganism in recent times, and the problems reached a peak at the weekend after Kaka, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid, has already spoken of his concerns that the violence could deter top players from moving to Serie A, and has now suggested it could lead him to leave Milan to protect his family.

"Could I leave Italy? Yes, if the episodes of violence continue," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The football I love is happiness. At this time, I can't enjoy myself. Should there be big problems that would prevent me doing my job in an adequate way, anything could happen.

"There is the possibility of going to another country.

"I'm also worried for my family's safety. My wife and parents frequently come to the stadium. How can you be tranquil in this way?"

AC Milan and Brazil playmaker Kaka was awarded the 2007 Ballon d'Or by French magazine France Football on Sunday.

Kaka, who won the Champions League with Milan last season, beat Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Barcelona's Lionel Messi of Argentina, who were second and third respectively.

Until last year, when Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro won the award after leading his side to World Cup glory in Germany, 52 European journalists voted for a player from a European club.


For this year's award, 96 journalists from around the world voted and the shortlist of 50 players featured players based in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Qatar.

Kaka earned 444 points to Ronaldo's 277 and Messi's 255. Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba was fourth on 108 points with AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo fifth with 41 points.

For the first time since 2003, Brazil's Ronaldinho was out of the top five in 12th place.

"To be honest, I was expecting it a little bit," Kaka was quoted as saying by France Football's Web site (www.francefootball.fr).

"I won the Champions League and was the competition's top scorer. That's what made the difference with the others.

"Cristiano Ronaldo lost to AC Milan in the Champions League. Had he won maybe he would have won the award. And Milan would not have played Liverpool in the final, let alone have won the trophy," he added.

"That is the key. You have to play in a winning team."

The elegant Kaka is already the winner of the FIFPro world Player of the Year and UEFA European Club Player of the Year awards and is the big favourite for FIFA's World Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.

His 10 goals in guiding Milan to their seventh European Cup triumph in May set up this flurry of awards in a year without a World Cup or European championship.

Chelsea on Monday denied tabling a sensational world-record offer for AC Milan's Kaka as the transfer rumour mill went into overdrive at the start of their Asian tour.

Chief executive Peter Kenyon dismissed reports of a 150 million euro (238 million dollar) bid for the Brazilian World Player of the Year and said negotiations with the Italian club had stalled.

"There was no offer made. I have read the same articles. They have made it clear that he is not for sale and we will make it clear we have not made an offer," Kenyon said after arriving in southern China.

"There is no reason to negotiate over something they don't want to do and we have not made an offer."

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliano also laughed off the price-tag reported by Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"There has been no offer of 150 million euros for Kaka from anyone, even less so Chelsea," he said.

"These are urban legends that nourish themselves. Tomorrow someone will write 200 million and hopefully by September we'll reach 300 million.

"I met with (Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich, we asked about Sheva (Andrei Shevchenko) and he asked about Kaka but we talked about numbers and it ended 0-0.

"Real Madrid have also called about Kaka but he is staying with us."

Kenyon said Chelsea were still talking to Real Madrid about striker Robinho. British media reported Chelsea have offered 25 million pounds (49.8 million US) for the 24-year-old Brazilian.

"It is well noted we have shown interest. We have had discussions with Madrid over it and they are ongoing. The window is still open and we are still talking to Madrid," Kenyon said.

Transfer speculation threatened to overshadow the start of the tour, which also includes trips to Macau and Malaysia before heading to Russia.

New coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was forced to scotch renewed doubts over Didier Drogba's future after the striker missed the trip through injury, making him the only high-profile absentee.

"Didier is injured. The doctor and our medical staff made a plan to have him training and playing in maybe three or four weeks," Scolari said. "But at this moment it's impossible for Didier to come with us."

However Scolari, whose first match is against Guangzhou Pharmaceutical on Wednesday, was boosted by the presence of key midfielder Frank Lampard despite persistent interest from Inter Milan.

"He is training every day in the morning and afternoon very well. The most important thing is that he is here with us," Scolari said.

"I have spoken to him every day, talking about Chelsea, about what's the best way for Chelsea to play and when training with the other players what's the best position for him.

"I have spoken about how to win games with Chelsea and no more."

Captain John Terry also made a fresh appeal for Lampard to remain at Stamford Bridge.

"The players all want him to stay, but it's down to Frank and the club to sort it out. We are here to focus on the football, but hopefully while he's here the club can sort it out," Terry said.

Chelsea were also buoyed by news that goalkeeper Petr Cech had signed a fresh five-year deal.

Meanwhile, influential midfielder Claude Makelele has left for Paris Saint Germain and Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz is headed to VfB Stuttgart, both on free transfers.

New signings Deco and Jose Bosingwa have both joined the tour as Chelsea look to improve on last season's runners-up finishes in both the Champions League and the Premiership.

Scolari will be keenly aware of billionaire owner Roman Abramovich's sky-high expectations with predecessor Avram Grant axed despite taking the team to their first Champions League final.

AC Milan playmaker Kaka will miss next weekend’s derby against Inter Milan after tests confirmed a foot injury.

Kaka, who scored Milan’s goal from the spot in a 1-1 draw against Reggina on Saturday, was forced to come off 12 minutes from time.

The club confirmed Sunday that the Brazil international will be sidelined for at least two weeks.

“AC Milan communicates that the footballer Kaka underwent medical tests today which confirmed a sprain to his left foot, ruling out a more serious injury,” a statment read on the club’s website.

“The prognosis is that he will be out for at least a fortnight.”

As well as next weekend’s derby, Kaka will miss Tuesday’s friendly international against Italy and in all likelihood the match against Cagliari on February 22.

Playmaker Kaka has insisted he wants to stay at AC Milan, despite speculation linking him to Chelsea or Real Madrid.

Reports have suggested the 27-year-old Brazilian, who rejected a £100m move to Manchester City in January, would join former boss Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea.

And the media in Spain has claimed Real are lining up a bid following Florentino Perez's return as president.

Kaka lavished praise on Ancelotti after it was revealed the coach would be leaving his post at Milan after an eight-year spell.

"He is a person I have a very strong bond with, thanks to these six years that I have spent here with him as my coach at Milan," he revealed.

However, the player himself appears to have put paid to any move and insisted he will make no further comment on his future.
