‘I passed a man who was carrying blonde girl in pink pyjamas’
Horrified close family friend did not realise the significance of what she had seen until later

A woman saw Madeleine McCann being carried off in the arms of her abductor but did not realise the significance of what she was seeing, it emerged yesterday.

The vital witness, a close friend of Kate and Gerry McCann, was on her way to join Madeleine’s parents for dinner at the tapas bar when she saw a man with a blonde girl wrapped in a blanket. She was wearing “distinguishable” pink pyjamas, the woman has told police. At the time she thought it was odd, but only realised to her horror too late that it was probably Madeleine. The witness, who is back in Britain, is said to be racked with guilt, but the McCanns do not blame her.

The woman saw the man close to the open window of the bedroom where Madeleine, then 3, had been sleeping with her two-year-old twin brother and sister, Sean and Amelie.

Her statement is the clearest evidence yet about what happened on the night Madeleine disappeared 25 days ago.

The woman saw the man at 9.30pm as she arrived late for dinner with Mr and Mrs McCann and other friends at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, where they were staying. She did not realise the significance until Madeleine’s mother went to check on her children 30 minutes later, discovered her daughter was missing and came back in an hysterical state. Madeleine had been wearing pink and white pyjamas.

The friend reported the sighting to police immediately but detectives released the description only after Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister in waiting, intervened last week. Despite the three-week delay, hundreds of people have called police with information.

The man is white, 35 to 40 years old, of medium build and 5ft 10in. He has short hair and was wearing a dark jacket, light beige trousers and dark shoes.

At least one other witness has reported seeing a person carrying a child close to the church in Praia da Luz. Mrs McCann and her husband yesterday made one of their regular visits to the Catholic service at Our Lady of Light church where prayers were said for their daughter’s return.

A police source said that the friend was in a group of three British couples and a single woman who had travelled with the McCanns to Portugal. She thought the man’s behaviour was unusual but assumed that it was a father taking his sleeping daughter home and had no reason to think it suspicious. “He was walking urgently, neither running or walking but something in between,” the source said.

“It was only when Kate said that Madeleine had gone that she made the connection. She had seen enough to make her believe it was Madeleine and she had described the pyjamas, which were distinguishable. She feels guilty that she was the last person to see Madeleine and didn’t do anything, but there is no sense of hostility [from the McCanns].”

Mrs McCann and her husband are convinced that it was the abductor and are angry at the delay in releasing the description. “In the view of the parents this sighting was Madeleine was being taken,” said the police source. “They have put a timeline together, which they have presented to police, and believe this was Madeline. That is why they have never believed she had wandered off.”

Mrs McCann discovered her daughter was missing when she entered her ground-floor bedroom at 10pm. It is believed that Madeleine was taken between 9.10pm and 9.15pm.

The rear patio doors to the apartment had been left unlocked to allow easy access for regular checks by the parents.

Mr and Mrs McCann, both 38, had grown frustrated about the failure of the Portuguese police to make a public appeal for sightings of the abductor.

When their friend returned home she repeated the statement to Leicester police, which is coordinating the inquiry in Britain and regards her as the principal witness. The police source said: “The officers who were first given the description just did not seem interested.”

Mr McCann, a consultant cardiologist, had several telephone conversations with Mr Brown last week after he promised to help the couple. British Government officials put pressure on their counterparts in Lisbon for the description to be released despite the appeal breaching strict Portuguese laws covering police investigations.

    Why secrecy surrounds inquiry

    — The legal system in Portugal prohibits police from divulging information about the state of an investigation

    — Such secrecy is meant to “protect the integrity of the inquiry” and avoid tipping off potential suspects

    — The ban is also designed to protect a suspect’s right to a fair trial

    — Police have emphasised that they would still release information to the public if it were deemed important

    — Police reluctance to release the photofit they had been showing to local people was explained when it transpired that there was little to see. A shopkeeper called the face “an egg with hair”

Three more 'Madeleine' sightings in Malta

Reported sightings of the missing Madeleine McCann continue to pour in, as the police have received a further three reports stating that the young girl was seen somewhere in Malta.

In the latest reports, a Maltese man said that he spotted a young girl in a pushchair who resembles the missing Madeleine. The man stated that he had seen the girl in the company of a woman at the Birzebbuga playing fields.

Another Maltese man claimed he had seen a girl who looks like the young British missing girl about a month and a half ago in Ta' Xbiex.

The police received a third report of an alleged sighting in the last hours, with a Maltese woman saying that she noticed a young girl resembling Madeline in a pushchair in Valletta, in the company of a woman who was probably of foreign nationality.

Whilst noting that further investigations are ongoing, the police stated that all search efforts have so far proved futile.

It's been 50 days since four-year-old British girl Madeline McCann disappeared while on vacation with her family in Portugal. The search may be thousands of miles away, but people in Connecticut and all around the world are paying attention and paying tribute.

Kristi Jenkins came to New Haven's Green with yellow balloons Friday to help find a missing girl she doesn't even know.

"Today is the 50th day she's been missing so we're just trying to raise awareness," Jenkins said.

Fifty days since McCann was abducted while vacationing with her family in Portugal.

Balloon releases are taking place in 50-countries to remind the world Madeline is still missing. Only a small amount were allowed to be let go from New Haven's Green.

"Hopefully we can bring her home," Jenkins said.

The remaining balloons were handed out to kids, and flyers were given to their parents.

"It seems very ambitious to be handing out flyers this far away," Heike Karsch of New Haven said.

"Just trying to gain awareness," Jenkins said. "There are so many people from Yale and the other universities that travel."

The Madeline McCann case may be across the globe, but these balloons remind parents to keep watch on their kids especially when on vacation.

"Just to help him learn his surroundings, show him what happens in life," parent Robert Archie of New Haven said. "Sometimes we can't always trust the people we think we're trusting"

"It's very challenging," Karsch said. "I put (my daughter) in a backpack sack in the airport so she can not go off, but it's really busy so you have to pay attention."

These balloons are getting attention from kids and serving as reminders to parents.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children there are 15 individuals reported missing in Connecticut. The oldest case dates back to February of 1961.

Arrest in Madeleine McCann case in Sotogrande

Following a report in El Pais in which Spanish police are said to have arrested a man in Algeciras in relation to the Madeleine McCann case the Spanish authorities have confirmed that a man is being questioned.

The man is believed to have been detained in Sotogrande, with police investigating allegations of extortion and other related issues relating to the disappearance of the young girl.

The man is believed to be an Italian national. A woman is also said to have been questioned following a police operation early this morning.

News of the arrest was first released by the Spanish newspaper El Pais. Since the report was issued, the location of the arrest first said to be in Algeciras has now been pinpointed to have been in Sotogrande, a mainly luxury residential area in which many Gibraltarians reside.

Although no connection is known to exist with Gibraltar at present the Royal Gibraltar Police is maintaining a close eye on events, and are believed to be offering their assistance in the investigations.

The woman is said to have been released after questioning, although the man remains held by police as the investigation into his activities continues.

Madeleine arrests: Judge hands down secrecy order

An Italian man and Portuguese woman who allegedly tried to extort money from the parents of missing British four-year-old Madeline McCann remained in custody in southern Spain today pending further questioning, a police spokeswoman said.

Police arrested the two in the exclusive Sotogrande district of San Roque town yesterday.

A judge in the nearby town of Torremolinos has taken charge of the case and placed a secrecy order on investigations, meaning police will not be able to comment on developments, the spokeswoman said. She was speaking on condition of anonymity in line with police rules.

The detainees were only identified by their initials; DC for the Italian and AD for the Portuguese woman.

In a statement yesterday, police said the two were suspected of trying to extract money from the McCanns by supposedly offering information concerning their daughter.

But the Italian Foreign Ministry said Spanish authorities had told them the man had no connection with the girl’s disappearance.

The McCann family have launched a Europe-wide search for their daughter after she disappeared two months ago during a family vacation in Portugal.

Two held over plot to extort money from McCanns

Police in Spain have two people in connection with an apparent plot to extort money from the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann.
The Italian man and Portuguese woman allegedly claimed to have information about the whereabouts of the four-year-old, who went missing in the Algarve eight weeks ago.

Police believe they have no connection with the disappearance of the four-year-old from her parents' holiday apartment in the resort of Praia da Luz.

2 accused of extortion in UK girl case

An Italian man and Portuguese woman who allegedly tried to extort money from the parents of missing British 4-year-old Madeline McCann remained in custody in southern Spain on Friday pending further questioning, a police spokeswoman said.

The detainees were only identified by their initials; D.C. for the Italian and A.D. for the Portuguese woman. Spain‘s daily El Mundo named the Italian as Danilo Chemello, born in the Italian town of Vicenza in 1946.

However, the Italian Foreign Ministry said Spanish authorities had told them the man had no connection with the girl‘s disappearance.

The McCann family has launched a search across Europe for their daughter. She disappeared two months ago during a family vacation in Portugal.

The Portuguese woman was detained due to her association with the Italian man.

2 Accused of Extortion in UK Girl Case

MADRID, Spain -- An Italian man and Portuguese woman who allegedly tried to extort money from the parents of missing British 4-year-old Madeline McCann remained in custody in southern Spain on Friday pending further questioning, a police spokeswoman said.

Police arrested the two in the exclusive Sotogrande district of San Roque town Thursday. A judge in the nearby town of Torremolinos has taken charge of the case and placed a secrecy order on investigations, meaning police will not be able to comment on developments, the spokeswoman said. She was speaking on condition of anonymity in line with police rules.

The detainees were only identified by their initials.

In a statement Thursday, police said the two were suspected of trying to extract money from the McCanns by supposedly offering information concerning their daughter.

However, the Italian Foreign Ministry said Spanish authorities had told them the man had no connection with the girl's disappearance.

Two Portuguese detectives took part in the arrests and Portuguese police inspector Olegario Sousa said it was thought that the two might be involved in the Madeleine case, but there was no concrete evidence yet.

The McCann family has launched a search across Europe for their daughter. She disappeared two months ago during a family vacation in Portugal.

The Italian was arrested on an international warrant _ issued from France, where he was wanted for alleged association with a crime group _ the Spanish police statement said. He had served an 18-month sentence in France for the mistreatment of his daughter, it said. A spokeswoman said his arrest warrant had nothing to do with the McCann case.

The Portuguese woman was detained due to her association with the Italian man.

Madeleine disappeared on May 3 after her parents left her and her brother and sister, 2-year-old twins, alone in their room while they went to a restaurant inside their hotel complex in Praia da Luz, a tiny resort town in Portugal's Algarve region.

Police have identified just one suspect in the case, but made no arrests before Thursday.

A month ago, Portuguese police said they were searching for a suspect _ a white man between 35 and 40 years old _ in connection with the girl's disappearance. They said the suspect had been wearing a dark jacket and beige trousers on the day the girl disappeared, and was spotted possibly carrying the girl near to where she had vanished.

Extortion suspect remanded in Madeline McCann case

The Portuguese woman also arrested has been released with charges

The Italian man arrested for attempting to extort reward money in the case of the missing British toddler, Madeline McCann, has been remanded to custody by the National Court in Madrid.

The order came from Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska after the suspect, 61 year old Danilo Chemello, turned down an offer for immediate extradition to France, under the international warrant issued for his arrest.

Terra España reports that France, who charges him with ‘illicit association’ reportedly related to organised crime, now has 40 days to process the extradition application.

The Portuguese woman who was arrested with Chemello in Sotogrande, Cádiz province, last Thursday has meanwhile been released from custody after appearing before the San Roque court assigned to the case.

54 year old Aurora Vaz Pereira was released with unspecified charges and must report back to the court every two weeks.

Both suspects’ passports have been retained by the authorities.

Court appearance today in Madeline McCann case

The Portuguese woman accused of attempted extortion appears in a Cádiz court on Monday, while her Italian boyfriend also charged has been transferred to the National Court for possible extradition to France

The Italian man arrested last Thursday in Sotogrande, Cádiz province, in connection with the disappearance of the British toddler, Madeline McCann, could be extradited to France under an international warrant issued for his arrest by a court in France.

61 year old Danilo Chemello was transferred to the National Court in Madrid on Sunday, once the authorisation came through to the San Roque court assigned to the case.

Spanish police believe that he and the Portuguese woman who was arrested with him, Aurora Pereira Vaz, were trying to extort the reward money from Madeline’s parents and are unlikely to have any information on the missing girl’s whereabouts.

54 year old Vaz Pereira appeared before the San Roque judge, Ana Cabello, on Sunday, saying she was innocent. The newspaper, Diario de Cádiz, reports that she is due to make a more detailed statement today, Monday, after which the judge will decide whether to release her from custody or to hold her on remand. The charge against her is extortion.

Information published by the Times newspaper on Sunday reveals that the couple have previously been tried for the attempted murder of Vaz Pereira’s ex husband, the financier, Alberto Tana: they were acquitted, but were found guilty of perjury and illegal possession of weapons, and sentenced to five years.

A further 18 month sentence came in 2003, when police found their five year old daughter tied up with adhesive tape in a darkened room in a raid on their home in France.

Madeleine McCann Runs With The Ball

ENGLAND’S rugby union squad is training in the Algarve. And they are wearing T-shirts with a picture of Madeleine McCann on the front. And the official Madeleine wristbands, this year’s Make Poverty History item.

“I really hope that today helps further to raise awareness of Madeleine’s disappearance,” says Jonny Wilkinson.

“My thoughts and those of the squad are with the family.”

Brian Ashton, England’s coach, meets with Gerry and Kate McCann. He says he is “humbled” to meet them. He is made to feel lowly. Rugby fans may wonder how Ashton finds reason to feel anything but humble, given his team’s results and performances.

“This generous gesture from the England squad, we hope, will remind sports fans that Madeleine is missing,” says Kate McCann.

Any moment now one of the players Madeline’s disappearance adds a sense of perspective to their imminent failure to retain the World Cup.

And we will say how sport, at its best, is about glory and lifting the human spirit. How sport enables us to escape the worst of mankind and life. How sport can break down boundaries and build bridges.

And, sadly, how sport is useless at finding a missing girl…

World-wide Events to Mark 50th Day of Madeleine’s Abduction

Campaigners right across the world will this Friday mark the 50th day of Madeleine’s McCann’s abduction.

From sites across the UK and from centres as wide apart as Eastern Europe and South America, 50 green and yellow balloons will be launched as a symbol of hope and to spread the message of the four-year-old’s disappearance.

The central ceremony of the day will take place at 2pm on the beach at Praia da Luz – the Portuguese holiday resort where Madeleine was taken during a family vacation on May 3.

Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann will release balloons carrying a photograph of their daughter and contact details for people with information to pass on to the police.

At other centres well-wishers will mark the day in different ways. Fifty doves will be released above the city of Ventura in California and campaigners in Afghanistan will follow local tradition by flying 50 kites.

“Fifty days have passed and our daughter is still missing and we are still searching,” said Gerry and Kate.

“The response to our request for events on the 50th day has been overwhelming,” said Gerry and Kate. “This global support gives us both strength and fresh determination to carry on our campaign.”

“It also means that on June 22 Madeleine’s image will be very visible from El Salvador to Poland.

“Everything we have done is to ensure that as many people as possible throughout the world know Madeleine’s story and can help to bring her home. Thanks to the support of hundreds of well-wishers this Friday Madeleine will be remembered world-wide.”

                            Other locations include:

Serra Cross (Grant Park, Ventura, California at noon)

                            Nigeria

                            India

Phillipines (San Pedro, Laguna at 10am)

                            Abu Dhabi

                            Tajikistan

                              Day 71 - 13/07/2007

Spent a large part of the day at the Child Exploitation and Online Protecetion (CEOP) headquarters in London. The work they are doing in the prevention and detection of child exploitation is fantastic and I have no doubt they are world leaders in many aspects of their work.

The statistics of child abduction in the UK, both attempted and sucessful cases, are stagggering with over 1000 reported cases in 2003/4 and the figures show a year on year increase. The scale of the problem is much larger than Kate and I ever imagined and worryingly there does not appear to be reliable statistics for many countries in Europe. Clearly a lot of work has to be done to tackle this growing problem.

Kate and I believe that someone, somewhere knows something about Madeleines abduction. The events of recent weeks and the high profile of Madeleine reassure us that when the key piece of information comes in, to any law enforcement agnecy, it will be treated seriously and fed into the inquiry quiickly and actioned.

                              Day 70 - 12/07/2007

It is ten weeks since Madeleine was abducted and every day has been incredibly hard for our family. No child should be separated from their family in such circumstances. The overwhelming messages of support, thoughts and prayers really help us stay strong. Somebody, somewhere knows where Madeleine is and it may take a single phone call for her to be found. We will not give up searching for her.

I came to London today to meet with the British police and will go to the Child Exploitaion and Online Protection Centre tomorrow to learn more about their role. As I have said previously we want to work closely with the police and child welfare organisations to help us keep awareness of Madeleines and other childrens disappearance high.

I was also invited to attend the National Police Federation Annual Bravery awards tonight. The work of the police is often taken for granted until you really need them. It was a humbling experience to see and meet so many officers who have shown such outstanding bravery in the line of duty and protecting us all. It was a fantastic opportunity to thank officers from all over the country who have been involved with the investigation to find Madeleine. The vast majority of those that I managed to speak to are, like us, very optimistic that we will find Madeleine safe and well.

                              Day 69 - 11/07/2007

This morning got off to a bad start when we were called, even before the twins were awake, by a reputable press agency saying that a body had been found and asking if it was true. It is very disappointing that this person did not check out the source of this rumour before contacting our representatives. Such calls and rumours are distressing even though we know if it does not come through an official source not to place much emphasis on it.

The Portuguese police interviewed three of our friends again today, to clarify points in their initial statements. As most of you will know, there is a lot of misleading information being published, both in the press and on the internet, about the events leading up to Madeleine's disappearance and the criminal investigation. We would like to give more information, especially about inaccurate and hurtful reports, but cannot for fear of prejudicing any subsequent court proceedings. The Portuguese police have made it clear to us that all witnesses should not divulge or discuss the information they have provided. Kate and I are, of course not party to all of the information coming into the inquiry for sound operational reasons.

Similarly a lot of people have asked to learn more about Madeleines likes and dislikes. This is information which we have been advised not to distribute publicly because of the risk of it being used in potential extortion attempts. The arrests recently in The Netherlands and Spain show that such information could be used negatively in the wrong hands.

Police check possible links between Madeline McCann and the Swiss girl, Ylenia Lenhar

A 67 year old Swiss resident of the Costa Blanca could be implicataed in the disapperance of the Swiss child.

The five year old Swiss girl disappeared on Tuesday near the scene of an attempted murder and the discovery of the body of the man.

The Alicante newspaper, Información, reports on a possible connection in the Marina Alta with the disappearance of a young girl in Switzerland this Tuesday.

Just five and a half years old, Ylenia Lenhard is believed to have been kidnapped, and was last seen at a swimming pool in Appenzell, Switzerland.

Police later found her rucksack and other possessions near the scene of a shooting which took place in nearby woods later that day, where a 46 year old man was injured. He’s now in intensive care and is not yet fit enough to be questioned by police.

The body of a 67 year old Swiss man resident of Benimantell in the Marina Alta since 1990, was found close by on Wednesday, together with some of the missing girl’s possessions.

He has been named as Urls Hans Von Aesch and is thought to have been involved in a shoot-out with another 46 year old man last Tuesday July 31 – the same day that the Swiss child disappeared. His body was found on August 1 in Saint Hallen in Switzerland.

The 46 year old is now in intensive care after being shot in the head, with police waiting to question him to see if he knows anything about the disappearance.

The Alicante Civil Guard are investigating in the Marina Alta at the request of the Swiss police, and have already questioned the dead man’s wife.

Possible links to the disappearance of British girl Madeline McCann in Portugal are now also reported to be being followed up.
