Well, real communication requires a number of prerequisites, for example:
1) getting to know each other's thought process and language - this means that some people use words with different meanings in mind; so it is usually best to not get into dangerous territory at first but try to understand how each person interprets words and what kind of thinking lies behind the words
2) being on the same wavelength - that helps a lot, because if the two 'value systems' (again, that is not the best word) or rather feelings about many issues are similar, there is more to talk about with mutual interest, and more understanding can happen
3) direct communication - this means that you don't perceive the other person through an image you have of them, and through an image you have of yourself; this is the most important prerequisite, and most difficult one to achieve in practice - very few can even come close
