another perspective

Have you ever wanted something so bad it hurt? But the harder you tried to go after it, the more it slipped away?



Well, I think it is safe to say that all of us at one point or another in our lives have been there. We have wanted a job, a career, a house, a lover so bad that we would do just about anything within our power to have it, but the harder we tried, the farther we slipped. On the other hand, we have all known people all around us who seem to have everything we so desperately are seeking to find, without even the slightest effort. Is it Murphy’s Law? Is it written in the stars? Or, is it simply the path we were chosen to live?



I used to live by the motto, “If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me.” But there has been far too many times where things just were out of my hands and no matter how much effort and dedication I put into what I wanted, in the end it just was not up to me. If anything, it was completely out of my hands and somehow there seemed to be a plan and power that was far greater than me. Nowadays I live by a different motto, “If it’s mean to be, it will be.”



As an actor and writer, I get a first hand glance at those people who always happen to be in the right place at the right time to meet the right person. Weather, it is a director who happens to find his leading lady in a Star Bucks line up who also happens to have the perfect resume and headshot for the role or the right producer who happens to find the right distributor at the PTA meeting he did not even plan on attending.



Then again, I also see a lot of people who are doing everything and anything they can to get that next big break or that next big promotion, living from paycheck to paycheck, surviving on one meal a day, working 3 dead-end jobs just to make ends meet, and yet fail to ever be in the right place at the right time.

How is it that some people are so lucky while others are just fresh out of luck?







Why are some people always getting the breaks, being in the right place at the right time and others just always at the wrong location with the wrong people?



Well, as cliché as it may sound, Ms. Destiny has everything to do with it.



However, it is not as simple as it sounds; those people who are always getting lucky, have perhaps learnt the secret to being lucky. Something I recently discovered.



I remember once an interviewer asked David Foster the secret to his success. His response was simple and honest, “Failure.” As a successful producer and music mogul, whenever his career seemed to take a wrong turn, a record he recorded or produced failed, he retreated and attacked from a different angle.



Most of us, never ever bother to think that if things are not going well for us, that we need to reevaluate our approach, technique or game plan. We just keep beating our head against the wall, hoping that something will give. Yet it never does.



What we fail to take note of is that when things are not going well, it is a sign that we are not on the right path or we are perhaps heading in the wrong direction and fail to trust our instincts even though our instinct never lets us down. So that is when we need to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new game plan. When you want something so bad but cannot seem to get it no matter how hard you try. Step back and take a different approach, attack from a different angle. You might just surprise yourself and discover strengths and talents that you never knew you had. Who knows you may even become one of those lucky people who just always happen to be in the right place at the right time…
