How to Look Like a Zombie
Going out like a member of the living dead can be a lot of fun. Whether during Halloween, for a "zombie crawl" through the city, at the workplace, or just to stroll around town, looking like you've just risen from the dead and have been feasting on human flesh can be a thrilling experience. This is a basic overview of an average zombie. For more gore, fake wounds and in-depth makeup/blood mixes, look elsewhere.
Steps
Get some makeup in the colors you want for your zombie. Usually white/grey or green tint works well (see "Things You'll Need").
Apply the base over your entire face and down your neck to get that unhealthy pallor.
Get directly under a light source and start using eyeshadow to accent sunken areas of your face. Find shadows and darken those a lot.
Black out your eyes completely, but keep it under control. Make it look like your eye sockets have shrunken in about an inch. Get darker towards the middle and inside corners of the eyes, making sure to accent natural shadows.
If you've got dark hair, lighten it up with baby powder.
Make fake blood. (see "Things You'll Need"). For one fluid cup (probably more than you'll ever use), do this:
1 cup of corn syrup
1-2 tbsp of red food coloring
One packet of hot-chocolate mix (or about as much as you'd use for an 8 ounce drink)
A couple small drops of blue or green food coloring, for color preference
Mix well and add small amounts of hot water until desired consistency/smearing factor is achieved.
Messier is betterApply fake blood. Here's the fun part, unless you get sick easily. Go nuts.
First, give yourself some wounds of some kind. Dribble blood into your hairline and let it run down your face. Tilt your head and pour some in your ear, then allow it to flow out (repeat for effect). Arms, legs, hands, whatever. Just have some fun.
Next, the "I just got done munching on the neighbor" look. Pour a fair amount of blood into your hand, and then "eat" it, to get a nice mouth smear. Then, put some more in your mouth (this mix is non-toxic, unlike some others) and then let it dribble out of your mouth and down your chin and throat.
Get your costume looking right. Here's the basic steps for getting your clothes properly trashed.
While applying fake blood, make sure you're messy, and get it on your clothes. This stuff runs and seeps in quite well and looks extremely convincing.
Use a knife or other pointed implement (carefully!) and rip holes into your costume. Go outside and roll in the dirt. Just get your clothes all messed up.
Learn to act properly. Zombies are slow, stiff, dim-witted, can't talk well, if at all, and crave human flesh.
Make moaning and gasping sounds when you breathe through your mouth. It adds great effect. Your jaw should hang slack at most times. If you must make other noises, talk in gibberish or moan louder/higher. Moaning always works.
Shamble, don't walk. Lean forward and almost fall with every step. Adding a limp or dragging one leg works great as well. Swing your arms limply, like you don't ever use them.
When passing people, growl or groan at them and wave your arms. Some higher-level zombies tend to moan for "BRAINS!!!" as well.
Be stupid. The average zombie has an IQ barely above freezing temperature. They will run into walls, trip, fall, and can't work with their hands.
Learn to do the dance from "Thriller." This is especially fun in a group. There are a few simple moves that are universally recognizable, and the dance helps separate "people having a fun time being zombies" from "people being weird being zombies."
Cleanup. Oh, yes, the lame part when you're finished.
First of all, take a shower. Make sure you put your clothes somewhere that they won't get something else ruined. This blood mixture will usually come off pretty quickly with hot water, but make sure you scrub down and wash your hair several times. If you have light hair, it might get stained.
If you're not throwing your clothes away, put them in the washer by themselves. Usually the blood will wash out.
Make sure to clean out the tub, wipe up the sink, and double-check to make sure your mom won't think you've slit your wrists.
Tips
Be fun, most of all. This isn't worthwhile unless you intend to have a blast doing it.
Get permission from your boss if you do this at work. Unless your office is really straight-laced, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
If you're worried about legal stuff, talk to the cops first if you're organizing a zombie crawl through town. They'll usually just send a couple of guys out to make sure nothing gets out of hand.
Stand in the tub/shower during makeup application. A little morbid, perhaps, but it's better than getting goop all over the bathroom, and cleanup is a breeze.
Wear your full costume during blood application to keep a consistent look.
If you have time, allow some blood to dry a little (about 10 minutes) and then re-apply another layer differently, to get a nice effect.
Warnings
Don't touch anyone! People will usually take this in the wrong way and scream for help.
Avoid little kids if possible. They don't know it's fake and you'll get their parents mad.
If the cops stop you, your boss tells you to clock out early, or you are generally confronted by anyone who has a problem, be friendly and understanding, and let them win any arguments. You're the one breaking social convention here.
Do not do anything illegal. Dressing up in a costume is not an excuse to break windows, loot shops, or flip cars.
Be careful pouring fake blood INTO your ear -- don't let it get in your inner ear canal, as it may cause infection. Better to just smear it around or use a Q-Tip to give the dribble-effect.
Things You'll Need
A mirror (hand or wall-mounted)
Golden or white corn syrup
Red food coloring
Cheap hot-chocolate mix
Blue or Green food coloring in small amounts
Light base makeup, two shades lighter than skin
Medium grey eyeshadow
Dark grey/Black eyeshadow
Clothes you can stain, rip, get filthy, and otherwise generally ruin.
A basic desire to have fun and make normal people think you're insane.

How to Make Pumpkin Candles
Pumpkin candles can add a spooky glow to your Halloween dinner table. While you'll need a pumpkin-shaped mold and candle wicks, all the other ingredients are available in most kitchens.

Steps
Boil a cup of water in a kettle or in a cup in the microwave.
Break up approximately 4 old candles in a small measuring cup. The smaller you break them up, the faster they will melt.
Fill a larger measuring cup about half way full with boiling water.
Place the smaller jug with wax into the larger one and let it remain there until the wax melts and turns into liquid. If you have a double boiler, use that for faster results.
Prepare your molds by placing a length of wick across each candle mold.
Add some orange glitter if you like for decoration.
Fill the mold with the wax.
Notice that when the wax has set, its color changes. The whiter and less translucent the wax, the harder it is.
Tips
Use a coffee grinder, if you have one, to finely break up the candles.
If you use the method of placing a smaller cup into the large one, make sure to keep the water heated so that the wax will remain melted.
Warnings
Be careful when handling hot wax; if it spills, it can cause burns on your skin.
Remember that you may find it difficult to clean up spilled out wax.
Things You'll Need
A kettle
Boiling water
Measuring jug
Pumpkin shaped mold
Pan
Tea light candles
Wick
Orange glitter (optional)

How Halloween turned into a monster
Unexplained Mysteries: Usually at this time of the year we like to post up an article which delves into the history of Halloween, what it's roots are, how it originated and what it means. This year however we thought we'd try something a little different. For the most part, the original traditions of Halloween have been lost, replaced instead by pre-made costumes, pumpkin lanterns and a level of commercialisation which has essentially ensured that the original meaning of Halloween has been forgotten. The following article from the Scotsman touches on how a tradition such as Halloween can eventually turn into a commercial 'monster'.
GIE'S oor Halloween ... The traditional cry of the guiser grows ever fainter, driven into the outer darkness of what was once All Hallow's Eve by strident shrieks of "trick or treat". The once-ubiquitous reek of burnt neep is dissipated under the glare of the pumpkin, that transatlantic yellow peril which has all but usurped our native turnip as lord of Halloween misrule. While police forces across the country issue warnings about excessive trick-or-treating, the gibbering of ghaisties and ghoulies enjoying their annual spree is drowned out by the ringing tills of what has become a multi-million-pound industry. After Christmas and Easter, according to research analysts, Halloween is the third-most profitable event for retailers in Britain, with associated spending rocketing from £12 million five years ago to an anticipated £120 million this year - reflecting, among other things, the move from home-made guising costumes to often ready-made, bought outfits. And this is not just for children: the adult fancy dress and decoration sector is the fastest-growing aspect of Halloween spending - while the UK pumpkin market is worth some £25 million.
Pumpkins, of course, as even the most fervent Halloween fundamentalist has to agree, are easier to carve than turnips (many of us will recall maternal wrath as the best kitchen knife was mangled, and spoil heaps of surplus neep accumulated). The leering orange vegetable's popularity may also have been boosted among adults by reports that its seeds may improve the sex drive. Perhaps the cry should be "Gie's back oor Halloween", as the one-time pagan Celtic festival of Samhain, hijacked by Christianity as All Hallow's Eve, is reduced to a consumer-driven charade, like Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. Perversely, it has come full circle, the holiday having been first imported to America with Scots and Irish emigrants, then returned, rehashed and hugely commercialised, to Britain and Europe over the past century.

Be a Model for Halloween
Need an original Halloween costume that flaunts your femininity while keeping you looking great? Be a model for Halloween!
Steps
A necklace and some rufflesGather some accessories. These could include fake/colored pearls, tiaras, over-sized sunglasses, boots, shirts that say "Supermodel" or "Soon-to-be Supermodel" (or you could paint the shirts), ripped and embellished jeans, glitter and an absolutely adorable purse.
Decide whether you are choosing to straighten your hair (recommended only for girls with naturally wavy or curly hair) or slightly waving it to make it look like a supermodel's. Hairspray is suggested if you wave it.
Get some makeup. Opt for a lavender or brown shade of eyeliner and some nice tan eyeshadow to bring out your complexion. Also, try some lip gloss and maybe a little bit of light lipliner. Don't go too heavy on the makeup.
Over-sized sunglasses are really nice for looking cool and super-model-y. Try ones with either a white or light-pink rim.
Have the attitude! This is the main part to acting like a super-model. Obviously, super-models are high-maintenance, but you've also got to have confidence and be kind to others. Believe me, this can only be a plus.
Tips
Glam it up with accessories! Trust me, creativity can get you far when it comes to accessories.
Carry makeup in your pocket-book for touch-ups in case your makeup rubs off. Also keep a hand-held mirror, a brush and some hairspray in there.
Warnings
Try not to be snotty like the portrayed vision of a model. The shirt that clearly states "Super-Model" will be plenty!
