Shab-e Yalda - The Winter Feast

This winter celebration has to do with the longest night of the year. Yalda, a Syriac word imported by the Syriac Christians means birth and is related to the birth of Jesus. It is also interchangable with “Shab-e Cheleh”, the Zoroastrian celebration of Winter Solstice, the longest night of winter, around December 21st and forty days before the next Persian festival ‘Jashn e Sadeh’. Cheleh is the word for forty and Shab means night.

Traditionally on this night the forces of Ahriman are at the peak of their strength. The next day, the first day of the month of ‘Dey’ known as ‘khoram rooz’ or ‘khore rooz’ (the day of sun) belongs to Ahura Mazda, the Lord of Wisdom. Since the days are getting longer and the nights shorter, this day marks the victory of Sun over darkness.

On this night, family and friends gather for a large feast. Various dried fruits, nuts, seeds and fresh winter fruits are provided at these events to celebrate and pray to the deities to ensure the protection of the winter crops. The traditional feast for the night is eggplant stew with saffron rice, rice with chicken and yoghurt. Medieval poetry from Hafez can be read and fortunes are told in the famous “Fal-e Hafez” tradition. Children and parents gather around a warm korsi, which is an older Persian oven (wooden box filled with coal), and hear tales of Rostam and Sohrab or other great stories from the Shahnahmeh. Candles are lit and fireplaces, ovens and heaters are all turned on to get through the cold night together. Families cuddle under the korsi and pass snacks around, tell jokes and stay up all night to share in the fun.

                    What goes round...
The popularity in the US of Rumi, a 13th-century Turkish poet, is a tragic irony, as the order of Sufi dervishes he founded is banned at home, writes William Dalrymple

                    William Dalrymple
                    Saturday November 5, 2005

                    Guardian

It seems almost unbelievable in the world of 9/11, Bin Laden and the Clash of Civilisations, but the bestselling poet in the US in the 1990s was not any of the giants of American letters - Robert Frost, Robert Lowell, Wallace Stevens or Sylvia Plath; nor was it Shakespeare or Homer or Dante or any European poet. Instead, remarkably, it was a classically trained Muslim cleric who taught sharia law in a madrasa in what is now Turkey.
Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi lived in Central Anatolia in the early 13th century, and he died around the time of Dante's eighth birthday. How Rumi came to outsell any other poet in America in the late 1990s, at least according to the LA Times, is an unlikely story - but not quite as unlikely as the way Rumi has been mysteriously morphed from a medieval scholar of Islamic law, or fiqh, into an American New Age guru.

A selection from the "arousing" Rumi translations by the poet Coleman Barks has been set to music with his verses mouthed by such spiritual luminaries as Madonna, Goldie Hawn and Demi Moore (the cover blurb of this CD describes it as all about "Passion. Music. Romance. Transcending the boundaries of ecstasy it creates a musical tribute to the Act of Love.") Sarah Jessica Parker is reported to do her aerobics to rock'n'roll settings of Rumi, and he is also available in a self-help audiobook version aimed at stressed New York commuters. Rumi has even been hailed as one of the torchbearers (according to one book on the subject) "of homoeroticism and spirituality".

Very little of this, of course, seems to have much connection to the original, historical Rumi, or the voluminous pages of profoundly mystical Persian religious verse he wrote. According to his most authoritative modern biographer, the Persian scholar Franklin D Lewis, "while Rumi seems slightly out of place in the company of Ginsberg, and seriously misunderstood as a poet of sexual love, it simply defies credulity to find Rumi in the realm of haute couture. But models draped in Donna Karan's new black, charcoal and platinum fall fashions actually flounced down the runway to health guru Deepak Chopra's recent musical versions of Rumi."

There is an additional layer of paradox and absurdity here: although Rumi lived and wrote in central Turkey, he is almost unread in his homeland and there is no accessible modern edition of his work in contemporary Turkish. According to Talat Halman, the leading Turkish Rumi scholar, whom I went to see in Istanbul, "Rumi is certainly not the bestselling poet in Turkey - far from it. For one thing, his poems have not been translated as extensively as they should have been, and the translations that exist are not poetic enough. People here simply don't have the patience to read a huge book like [Rumi's masterpiece] The Masnavi."

Jashn-e Sadeh - The Fire Festival

This event, which pays homage to fire and light, is celebrated on January 31st of the year. As with other elements, fire is one that is celebrated often and signifies light and knowledge. Jashn-e Sadeh marks a hundred days of the great winter, which start on the first of the Persian month Aban. Sad means one hundred in Farsi.

There are many suggestions as to the origins of the fire festival. Some say the event comes from the legend of Hushang Shah, who encountered a black snake one day on his ride. In his defense, Hushang threw a rock at the snake and missed. Instead, the rock hit another large rock and started a spark starting a fire. The fire spread and engulfed the snake saving Hushang’s life.

To celebrate, friends and family gather firewood and build a huge bonfire. Candles, lite and fire are respected and celebrated. Chestnuts, potatoes and nuts are roasted in fires and enjoyed by all. Traditional drinks, sweets and meals are served as people sing and dance.

                                Samanid Dynasty 900- 999 CE
As the first native dynasty to come to power in Iran after the Muslim Arab conquest, the Samanid dynasty is known for reviving Persian nationalism and pride.
Saman-Khoda, the original emperor gave four territories in the country to his four sons. Nuh obtained Samarkand; Ahmad, Fergana; Yahya, Shash; and Elyas, Herat.
In 875 CE, Ahmad's son Nasr became governor of Transoxania. In 900 CE, his brother Ismail I defeated the Saffarids in Khorasan and the Zaydites of Tabaristan, to create a semiautonomous rule over those regions, with Bukhara as the capital. His region of rule expanded to Afghanistan, and eastern Iran. He was known as a generous man and a competent ruler. Ismail’s successors tried to follow in his footsteps. One of them, Nasr ibn Ahmad is remembered as supporter and contributor to growth of literature and culture. Also, two important primer ministers named Abu Abdellah Jayhani, and Abul Fazl Mohammad Balami were historical figures as they thrived on intellectuals. Through their influence, Bukhara became the cultural domain of Iranian civilisation. Overall, the Samanid dynasty contributed to Persian culture in all areas such as culture, language, art, society, trade, politics, and science. In addition, the influenced agriculture, commerce, architecture, city building, coinage, textiles, and metalwork.
Their work can still be seen today in the mausoleum of the Samanids in Bukhara, the mausoleum of Arabato in Tim, and the mosque Nuh Gunbad in Balkh.

                                Saffarid Dynasty 861-900 CE
In 861 CE a man named Yaqub conquered the region of Sistan began expanding east to Kabol and then north to Kerman. Although by 868 CE he had vast rule over Shiraz and the surrounding territories, he continued to workd for Abbasid al-Mutazz Billah, the caliph. In 869 CE the new caliph, in fear of his potential power, made him the governor of Balkh, Tokharestan, Fars, Kerman, Sistan and Sind. Yaqoub attempted two more major battles, once to Neishapour and the last time to Fars, advacing as far as Khouseztan. He died in 878 CE in Jondishapour. He was succeeded by his brother Amr ibn Layth, who was appointed governer and ruled Fars, Kerman, Esfahan, the region of Jebal, Gorgan, Tabarestan, Sistan and Sind. To test the new governer, the caliph also gave Amir Ismail Samani power in Transoxania (a part of which Amr was supposed to rule). Neither side aware of the imposed conflict, the two went to war. Amr was defeated in 900 CE.

The Saffarids rule reached its limits during the rule of Yaqoub and Amr. The brothers had managed to extend as far as the Indus River and to the northeast to the Oxus. In the north and northwest all of Khorasan, Gorgan and Tabarestan and in the south Kerman and Fars were considered conquered Saffarid land.
