Today, Britain has the largest audience for Bollywood cinema outside India and figures for 2005 show that Hindi films released in the U.K. that year outnumbered not only other foreign language films, but also home-grown English-language productions. They also accounted for 11 of the 20 most successful foreign language films released in 2005.According to the U.K. Film Council, Bollywood's share of the gross U.K. box office in 2005 was "higher than the total box office of all European releases combined." The trend continued in 2006 with Bollywood accounting for 16 per cent of all films released in the U.K. compared to just 13 per cent British films."What we are witnessing is a virtual Bollywoodisation of Britain's cinemascape,

Bollywood glamour hits Yorkshire for IIFA awards

London - The biggest names in Bollywood were assembled in towns across northern Britain Friday for a celebration of Indian film that will culminate in the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards on Saturday.

Shilpa Shetty, Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi, Geeta Basra and Sayali Bhagat were among the stars and starlets lending some Bollywood glamour to cities such as Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford.

Skies were grey but Shetty, affectionately adopted as an honorary Briton since her Big Brother race row earlier this year, said she was keeping her sunglasses on all the same.

'It's beautiful, isn't it,' she said about the formerly industrial region of northern Britain.

Hashmi, when asked whether he would buy a house in the county of Yorkshire, replied: 'I might.'

The four-day festival is expected to attract up to 30,000 visitors, and Saturday's award ceremony - the Indian equivalent of the Oscars - is to be broadcast to a global audience of nearly 500 million in 110 countries.

A total of 22 Bollywood productions, and three premieres, will be shown.

Bollywood entertainment in Britain has long made the progression from domestic consumption to the big screens of multiplex cinemas, reflecting the growth in the British Asian population, as well as the appeal of the movies.

Tickets for Bollywood blockbusters are now estimated to out-sell tickets for British-made films which, by comparison, are often seen as lacking the successful combination of song and dance, action, romance and comedy, the Financial Times said Friday.

Fans mainly include members of Britain's large Muslim community, which is concentrated in cities such as London, Birmingham, Bradford and Leicester.

Jyoti Deshpande of Eros International, which distributes Bollywood films across the world, said Britain is an important market that will typically take 40 to 100 prints of a strong film, which can be expected to gross up to 3 million pounds (5.9 million dollars) during its run.

'The market has broadened in recent years,' she said. 'That reflects higher production values and greater willingness of mainstream cinemas to show the films.'

Reena Combo of the British Asian leisure magazine Ikonz says that local audiences have an appetite for movies that reflect social realities.

For example, Phiri Milenge, a film starring Shilpa Shetty that tackled the tricky topic of HIV was popular in the UK, despite scandalizing some cinema goers in India.

However, the movies themselves struggle to attract significant white British audiences, despite English subtitles, experts said.

But that could change. The historical films Lagaan and Dev Das had some crossover success, while the British-made film Bride and Prejudice featured the Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai.

Deshpande said that Bollywood films have become more international in style, which means they travel better.

There had been a decline in cinematic conventions puzzling to non- Asian viewers, such as a taboo on kissing, lengthy weeping over fractured family relationships and song and dance routines in flower- strewn gardens, said Deshpande.

Acceptance, she pointed out, depended - partly - on familiarity.

London, June 7: The International Indian Film Academy IIFA (IIFA) awards will make a grand opening at Yorkshire today.

A host of stars started arriving at the British county to attend the eighth IIFA awards.

There will be 50 IIFA-related events in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York and Hull during the four-day extravaganza.

Around 500 Bollywood celebrities are expected to participate, according to Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft, which is managing the show.

Judith Donovan, chairman of the Yorkshire Tourist Board, said she expected 28,000 extra tourists. IIFA is likely to be watched on television by some 500 million people worldwide.

"The sheer scale, height, glam, glitz is just going to be mind-blowing," Donovan said.
The main event will be the awards ceremony, the Bollywood equivalent to the Oscars, at Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena on Saturday.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan along with son Abhishek and wife Aishwarya Rai will grace the occasion.

Other top Bollywood stars expected to walk the red carpet include Ajay Devgan and Kajol, Salman Khan, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty, Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Rakyesh Mehra, Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Priyanka Chopra, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Rituparno Ghosh and Govinda.

A "Global Business Forum" will also be held tomorrow where delegates from Yorkshire Forward and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (FICCI) will meet at the Royal Armouries at Leeds where they are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

The MoU will stipulate how Yorkshire could meet India's 160 billion pounds infrastructure requirements by 2012, especially in the field of clean energy, and the right areas for inward Indian investment in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

"There are huge commercial opportunities for our financial services, our environmental companies and others. The principal reason is an economic one about building long-term relationships between Yorkshire Forward and FICCI," said Riordan, CEO of Yorkshire Forward.

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt jailed for six years

Two days after celebrating his 48th birthday, famous Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was sentenced Tuesday to six years in jail for illegally possessing firearms, linking him to the 1993 Mumbai serial blast that killed 257 people in India's financial capital.

In a nerve-wrecking wait, Judge Promod Kode pronounced that Sanjay would face a six-year prison term for his crime, which the judge described as a severe criminal act.

He was convicted under the Arms Act for receiving weapons used in the blast from underworld kingpins and storing them in his residence in Pali Hill.

After the court's announcement, Sanjay made a plea to the judge to allow him to telephone his only daughter Trishyla Dutt, currently studying in New York, and his two sisters in Mumbai.

After a 14-year trial, the TADA Court, a special court under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), handed down the sentence on Sanjay this afternoon, amid an unprecedented security blanket around the court.

Last November, Sanjay was convicted on charges of possessing illegal arms but was acquitted from harsher terrorism charges relating to the Mumbai bombings.

Over the last few months the special court had awarded capital punishment to 12 accused including those who planted the bombs, while 20 others received life imprisonment.

Sanjay had already spent 16 months in prison during the trail, after the young actor was arrested in April 1993 following the blast, but was released on bail in August, 1994.

About 100 suspects were put on trial, including women linked to the ruthless Mumbai underworld like the notorious Abu Salem and Dawood Ibrahim, and the trial was considered one of the longest in Indian legal history.

During his trial, Sanjay said that he had purchased the weapon to protect his family that had sheltered Muslims during a bloody 1992 Mumbai riot.

On March 12, 1993, a series of 13 explosions ripped through Mumbai's landmarks over a twohour period, killing 257 people and seriously injuring 713.

Properties worth about RM27 million (300 million rupees) were damaged in the blasts that had left an ugly mark in India's financial hub.

In the same court, three of Sanjay's friends allegedly involved in the attack were also charged.

Yusuf Nullwalla was given five years, Kesri Adanjia received two years while another accused Russi Mulla was let off the hook, but placed on probation.

Sanjay's lawyers are now planning to appeal to India's highest court the Supreme Court.

Sanjay is the only son of popular actor the late Sunil Dutt, who was a former cabinet minister and a Congress loyalist.

Nothing has been the same for the actor since he was convicted under the Arms Act for the illegal possession of a AK-56 rifle and a 9 mm pistol on November 28 last year.

                "Sanjay not a terrorist"

The special court conducting the trial of the serial blasts case, however, absolved him of more serious charges under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). "This accused is not a terrorist," the court had then said.

Sanjay faces 5-10 years in jail

On July 31, special TADA Judge Promod Kode is expected to decide whether to sentence Dutt or to grant him liberty under the Probation of Offenders Act.

In case, the court does not grant him liberty, Sanjay faces a prison term of between five and 10 years.

                Tumultuous life, career

Dutt, whose career spans 26 years, has endured many ups and downs in quick succession was born to successful and respected actor parents, Sunil and Nargis Dutt. Although, his first movie "Rocky" was a hit, he got addicted to drugs and had to undergo rehabilitation in the US.

He left this phase behind to emerge as a mega-star with the success of Subhash Ghai's "Khalnayak" in the early 1990s. But Dutt then found himself in jail in connection with the 1993 blasts case.

The Supreme Court freed him on bail 16 months later. He went on to bag his first Filmfare Award for a gangster's role in Mahesh Manjrekar's hard hitting underworld saga "Vaastav".

"Munnabhai MBBS", in which he pulled off a comedy role with elan, became a cult movie and was followed by its equally successful sequel "Lage Raho Munnabhai".

In between, he lost his father Sunil Dutt, who was then the Union sports minister. He lost his wife Richa Sharma to cancer several years ago.

                          Bollywood actor Khan is released

Bollywood star Salman Khan, jailed on a poaching charge, has been released from a prison in India's Rajasthan state.

Khan spent less than a week in jail, following a five-year sentence imposed by a magistrate in 2006 for hunting a protected gazelle in 1998.

Khan appealed against the order but was arrested last week when the appeal was rejected, and jailed in Jodhpur.

He has now appealed to the High Court, which has given him bail while it considers the case.

The actor was also convicted in February last year for killing two protected black buck antelopes during a separate hunting trip in 1998.

The actor is due to fly back to Mumbai [Bombay] soon.

                          Hit actor

The poaching cases are not Salman Khan's only brush with the law.

He is also facing trial in Mumbai in connection with a 2002 hit-and-run case.

Khan is accused of driving into a group of homeless people sleeping on a pavement, and faces 10 charges, including causing death by negligent driving. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

Salman Khan is one of Bollywood's top actors who has starred in many hit films.

He has a huge fan following across India and also among the Indian diaspora the world over.
