''The 10 Worst Movies of 2004'
1) “Alexander”--Madness. Utter madness. It’s snowing cocaine in Oliver Stone’s world, and apparently no one has a shovel to go rescue him. An incalculably bad film made from incredibly rich source material. “Alexander” is an embarrassment to all concerned.
2) “Chasing Liberty”--This film nearly broke me. It nearly broke my spirit. It’s the only film this past year that I gave up on and just started shouting insults at in the theater, totally not caring of the people around me. I didn’t even care if the studio handlers tossed me. Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to end! This flick, about a doe-eyed First Daughter getting her first taste of independence in Europe, vastly overrated the appeal of Mandy Moore. My friends say I’ll have to bite the bullet and like this kind of crap when my little girl becomes 7 or 8 one day. Let me state for the record, there is NO WAY a child from my loins will have this bad of taste!
3) “Van Helsing”--The worst example of computer-degenerated effects flicks this year. The visuals of “The Incredibles” and “Shrek 2” looked more realistic than the constant digital imagery on display in this loud, soulless, overproduced, underwritten studio bore. I was just thankful the local cineplex I saw this at had a vending machine that dispensed Advil.
4) “Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London”--More like “Destination Hell.” The tedium was darn near unbearable. Memo to Anthony Anderson: Just Say No! You don’t have to do every script that Hollywood slides under your door. Put a towel under there. Do something--ANYTHING!!!--to keep these scripts from reaching your desk!
5) “Taxi”--Queen Latifah starred as a New York city cab driver, riding around Manhattan in a specially outfitted taxi that morphs into a super-charged muscle car at the flick of a switch. She helps Jimmy Fallon’s panty-waisted cop solve bank robberies involving European supermodels, and she dreams only of driving NASCAR one day. OK, seriously. How does THAT script get green-lit at a major studio?!?!
6) “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”--Charmless sequel to the vastly superior 2001 original. Renee Zellweger and cast act their parts with all the enthusiasm of the friends you pressured into helping you make your last house move. And it still contains one of the worst twists ever in a comedy, placing the dithering title character in a Thai prison with prostitutes and teaching them to sing “Like a Virgin.”
7) “Welcome to Mooseport”--This one still hurts. And the presence of the great Gene Hackman in the film did not in any way diminish the pain of watching Ray Romano flailing as a big-screen leading man. A really great concept (former U.S. president runs for mayor of a small town against a beloved local plumber) is terribly botched.
“Jersey Girl”--Writer-director Kevin Smith is usually one of the sharpest and funniest filmmakers working in cinema today. But he will be living down this chick flick among his comic-geek friends and Gen X fans quite possibly for the rest of his life. If he had actually directed the film in an apron and house dress, he couldn’t have embarrassed himself more.
9) “Exorcist: The Beginning”--At one point, one of the side characters tells a brief story of the Devil coming to Earth and partaking in an orgy at a convent. Now THAT is “The Exorcist” movie I wanna see! This one you can send back to the fiery depths of Hades from whence it came.
10) “Garfield”--Some sick and twisted dodo behind the scenes thought it was a good idea to have an evil animal-show TV host kidnap Odie and place an electro-shock collar around the poor pup’s neck. Guaranteed, any parent who paid for a family of four or more to see this CGI mis-fire will want to do the same thing to the people who made it.
