  • The sense of anticipation and excitement at the David InterContinental Hotel of Tel Aviv was immense. The tens of local media reporters and the many international correspondents in Israel were joined by the media accompanying Real Madrid in their hopes of covering and taking the most eagerly awaited snapshot: the Champions in the Peace Match presentation. Shimon Peres thanked the champions for their presence, stating, "Thanks for having come to this all-important Peace Match." His message is shared both by Arabs and Jews. "You have won our hearts over. Thanks for coming voluntarily to spread the noble message of Peace that you bring. May God bless you."
Ramón Calderón, President of Real Madrid, remembered, "When we received the invitation, we didn't doubt it for a minute. We wanted to back up this proposal and play here, where the kernel of the problem is. We will always support any fair cause, like this one which seeks the integration of Palestinians and Israelis."

Both parties exchanged gifts. Ramón Calderón presented Shimon Peres with a Real Madrid shirt with his name and the number 1 on the back. The President of Israel gave Calderón another short, also with his name and his die number, of the Peace Team, a jersey that will be worn for the first time in Israel by the mixed Palestinian-Israeli team.

After, it was the turn of Real team captain Raúl to speak. He expressed the shared feeling of the whole squad saying, "We are tired after Sunday’s effort, but we are also especially thrilled to put in a great performance." The number ‘7’ was followed by Abbas Suan, Arab-Israeli international born in Galilee and current captain of the Peace Team. Finally, it was the turn of Ron Pundak, General Director of the Peres Center for Peace, who asked all present to turn their heads towards six children who were in the room.

    "CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE"
***fat Ekron and Rafa, the children of Jericho, a town east of Jerusalem located in the West Bank, represented the thousands of kids who partake in the "Twinned Peace Soccer Schools". The gate takings will be destined to this program of the Peres Center which tends to young Palestinians and Israelis from peripheral communities in need. These young boys from the program will be in charge of the opening act of the night participating in Peace sporting games together with the players of Real Madrid, proving that cooperation and team-work between both nations is entirely possible.

      • The Bernabéu to host the championship's final for the 11th time on Sunday

The 31st final of the King's Cup will be held two days before the competition's 30th anniversary since it was renamed. On 25 June 1977, Betis defeated Athletic Bilbao in the penalty shoot-out after drawing 2-2. Real Madrid's stadium has been the venue for the largest number of King's Cup finals since then.

The first King's Cup final was held at Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderón Stadium, but the Bernabéu has been the venue for the largest number of finals since then, hosting a total of 11 fixtures, including tomorrow's. The Vicente Calderón follows with 8, while Mestalla and La Romareda have seen 4 and 3 finals, respectively.

Real Madrid have taken part in three of the ten finals held at the Santiago Bernabéu so far. On 4 June 1980 they defeated Castilla 6-1 in the strangest final the competition has ever seen. On 27 June 1992, the Whites lost against Atletico 2-0. The last time they played a King's Cup final at home was against Deportivo on 6 March 2002, losing 2-0. Between its 1947 foundation and 1975, the Whites' stadium held 23 finals of the Generalísimo Cup -as the King's Cup was known duing the Dictatorship. Between 1948 and 1972 it held the final nearly every year, with the exceptions of 1957, 1963 and 1970, when Barcelona was the venue. Real Madrid won the Generalísimo Cup 2-1 against Sevilla in 1962.

The Bernabéu has therefore been the venue for 34 Copa finals; Real Madrid played in eight.

                      • Real Madrid presents Schuster as its new coach

Bernd Schuster is Real Madrid's latest coach.

The former Getafe coach was presented by Madrid president Ramon Calderon at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Monday.

"This is a happy day for me. I thank the president and everyone here for giving me the opportunity,'' Schuster said.

Schuster will take over from Fabio Capello, who was fired on June 28, less than two weeks after leading Madrid to its first Spanish league title in four years and ending the club's longest major trophy drought in 53 years.

Schuster, a former Germany defender, had coached Getafe since 2005. The Madrid-based club lost 1-0 to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final and finished ninth in the league.

"It's not a new home for me, I played here for two seasons,'' Schuster said. "I am sure that on this first day as a coach it's just as it was when I was a player, thinking that we will triumph with this grand club just as we did then.''

Meanwhile, Getafe hired former Denmark midfielder Michael Laudrup to replace Schuster. Laudrup, a former player at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, signed a two-year deal.

Schuster will be Madrid's eighth coach in four years.

Calderon said recently Madrid was considering offering the job to Arsene Wenger, Ronald Koeman or Michael Laudrup.

But news reports said Calderon had wanted Schuster even before the club signed Capello last year.

Calderon said Schuster incorporated all of the values of the Madrid club.

"Today we take a step in another direction,'' Calderon said. "Not just as a club that wins championships but that is enjoyed for its style of play. It will be a team that reflects excellence in its game.''

Schuster, 47, is a former star for Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Besides Getafe, Schuster has also coached Spain's Levante _ which he led to promotion to the first division in 2004 _ Germany's Cologne, Spanish second-division side Xerez, and Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk.

Laudrup, 43, led Danish club Brondby to a second-place finish in 2006 before leaving the club. He also worked as an assistant to Denmark coach Morten Olsen from 2000-02.

Laudrup scored 37 goals in 104 appearances for Denmark.

Capello's season was overshadowed by problems, particularly his unpopular decision to bench David Beckham after the England midfielder signed a contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

                        • Real Madrid Hires Schuster in Bet on Attacking Soccer

Real Madrid hired Bernd Schuster as coach in a bet the former Germany midfielder will produce the attacking style of soccer that eluded his predecessor Fabio Capello.

Schuster, presented to the media today at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, signed a three-year contract. Italy's Capello was fired June 28, 11 days after leading Madrid to the Spanish league title -- its first trophy in four years.

``We don't just want Real Madrid to win titles,'' club President Ramon Calderon told reporters. ``We want to be very proud of its play. Schuster has all the values that the club has.''

Real Madrid is seeking a return to the style that marked its record nine European titles, including the 2002 edition it won with a team featuring Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Luis Figo. Barcelona has scored more goals in La Liga in each of the past three seasons, while Madrid's latest tally was its lowest in seven years.

It will be Schuster's highest-profile job after a playing career that included stints at Real Madrid and Barcelona in the 1980s and coaching successes at Getafe and Levante, smaller Spanish clubs.

``It's not a new house,'' Schuster said at the presentation. ``I know what this means and I know where I am.

                          Champions League Failure

According to sports daily Marca, Madrid approached Schuster in March after Capello's $150 million gamble on eight new players including Ruud van Nistelrooy, Fabio Cannavaro and Mahamadou Diarra was floundering. Madrid lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16.

Madrid won seven of its last eight games as it edged Barcelona to the league title, ending its longest stint without a trophy for 53 years.

``This club looks for excellence and although we thank Capello very much for what he did, there was dissatisfaction with the way the team was playing,'' Calderon said in an interview. ``People wanted something more.''

As a player, Schuster scored 63 goals in 170 games in eight years at Barcelona before switching to archrival Madrid, where he spent two years.

He started his career at Cologne, where he returned as a coach for one season in 1998, and played for Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. He represented Germany 21 times.

                          • Real Madrid name Schuster as new coach

Spanish champions Real Madrid appointed former German international Bernd Schuster as their new coach on Monday.

The 47-year-old, who has coached Getafe for the last two seasons, replaces Fabio Capello, who was sacked at the end of June after leading the club to their first league title in four years.

"This is a very happy day for me and I would like to thank the club for giving this opportunity to a young coach," Schuster said when he was presented to the media at the Bernabeu.

"This is not a new home for me as I played here for two seasons. I'm sure that on my first day as coach it will be like when I was a player and I have the same desire to triumph at the club."

Schuster, who has coached Primera Liga side Getafe for the last two seasons, is the eighth occupant of the Real Madrid bench in a little over four years.

The German has been set the task of emulating Capello's success but at the same time ensuring that the team plays the sort of crowd-pleasing, attacking football demanded by the club and its fans.

The former Real, Atletico and Barcelona midfielder was reported to have bought himself out of his contract with Getafe by paying a compensation fee of 480,000 euros, thus allowing him to make the switch to the nine-times European champions.

Schuster steered the modest, Madrid-based Getafe to consecutive ninth-placed finishes in the Primera Liga and to a first final of the King's Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Sevilla.

Getafe caused the upset of the season when they came back from a 5-2 first-leg loss against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Cup to inflict a humiliating 4-0 defeat on the Catalans in the return.

Prior to the Getafe job, Schuster had a brief spell in charge of Levante.

Levante got off to a flying start but faded badly in the second half of the season and Schuster was fired four games from the end of a campaign that ended with relegation.

His only other top-flight experience came with Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk between 2003-04.

Once again his team got off to a good start but they hit problems towards the end of the season and he was fired when they fell behind arch-rivals Dynamo Kiev.

A confident and outspoken figure, Schuster had a series of high-profile arguments with several of his clubs as a player, sitting out a season while at Barcelona because of a legal dispute and being barred from playing while at Bayer Leverkusen.

He had made no secret of his desire to take charge at Real and had been linked with the job since midway through last season.
