Manchester City has confirmed that they have agreed to terminate the contract of American midfielder Claudio Reyna to allow the veteran midfielder to return to the United States.

Reyna, whose pregnant wife has already moved back to the States, is expected to join Major League Soccer outfit the New York Red Bulls.

His recent time at City has been blighted by injury and he has not played for the Premiership club since a defeat by Tottenham in December.

He joined City from Sunderland in 2003 for 2.5 million pounds (five million dollars) and went on to make 77 league appearances, scoring four goals.

A move to the Red Bulls will see Reyna, 33, reunited with former United States coach Bruce Arena, who is now head coach at the club.

Reyna retired from international football after winning the last of his 112 caps while playing in his third World Cup finals, in Germany last summer.

Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch combined to fire Liverpool to within two points of Barclays Premiership champions Chelsea on Monday as West Ham blew its latest chance to climb out of the drop zone.

The Reds duo both netted sublime goals in their 2-1 win at Upton Park, which put the in-form visitors to within touching distance of second place in the table.

After a cat-and-mouse first half, barely 12 seconds had lapsed after the restart when Liverpool scored, Kuyt rifling the ball in off the underside of the crossbar.

It was not long before the lead was doubled, a brilliant flowing move matched by Crouch's controlled finish from John Arne Riise's cutback.

Liverpool looked completely in control and should have added to the lead before substitute Kepa Blanco marked his Hammers debut by pulling a goal back 13 minutes from time.

Some sloppy play from the visitors allowed Nigel Reo-Coker to feed Bobby Zamora into the inside left channel, the forward squaring for Kepa to net with ease.

But, despite piling on the pressure, the home side were unable to force an equalizer and are now seven games without a league success.

The Hammers' evening could not have been in sharper contrast to that of relegation rivals Sheffield United, who beat Fulham, 2-0, to move seven points clear of danger.

United bossed the first half at Bramall Lane and was rewarded 23 minutes in when Jon Stead netted his first goal since signing from Sunderland this month.

Vincenzo Montella gave the ball away in a dangerous area, allowing Nick Montgomery to find Stead, who rasped home a left-foot drive off the bar from six yards.

It got better five minutes later, with Ian Pearce failing to clear Stephen Quinn's left-wing cross, allowing Michael Tonge to convert from close range.

The Fratton Park faithful were left disappointed for the second straight home game as Portsmouth was held to a goalless draw by Middlesbrough.

Following the shock 1-0 defeat to Charlton 10 days ago, Pompey were looking to reignite their European push but they were thwarted by a stubborn Boro display to remain sixth in the table.

The only bright spot for West Ham was that fourth-bottom Wigan slumped to its ninth straight defeat in all competitions after Reading came from behind to win, 3-2, at the Madejski Stadium.

The visitors got off to the best possible start when, three minutes in, Emile Heskey latched onto a long ball from Josip Skoko, and finished with aplomb on the volley left-footed.

Reading eased their way back into the game and drew level when Latics goalkeeper Chris ***kland found himself in no-man's land, allowing Ivar Ingimarsson to glance a header into the net.

More awful goalkeeping allowed the Royals to take the lead, ***kland punching a Glen Little cross straight onto the head of Stephen Hunt, who headed it goalward for Shane long to nod in from point-blank range.

***kland completed a hat trick of howlers in the closing moments, beaten to the ball by Dave Kitson, with the resultant deflection finding Leroy Lita, who could not miss.

Denny Landzaat pulled a goal back for the visitors in the fifth minute of injury-time - but there was no time for them to find an equalizer.

Chelsea moved to within three points of Barclays Premiership leaders Manchester United for at least 24 hours with a 1-0 win at Charlton.

United are under pressure to beat Tottenham at White Hart Lane tomorrow and regain their six-point cushion following the champions' victory.

Charlton's Amady Faye was badly caught in possession and Frank Lampard produced a trademark strike in the 18th minute for the only goal of the game.

England captain John Terry made a welcome return from injury, coming off the Chelsea bench towards the end of the match.

Liverpool huffed and puffed but could not blow Everton's defensive wall down as the Merseyside derby finished goalless at Anfield.

The Toffees defended brilliantly as Rafael Benitez's side ran out of ideas despite spending most of the second half camped in the visitors' half.

West Ham debutant Matthew Upson was forced off during a horrid afternoon against Aston Villa in the West Midlands which saw the struggling Londoners beaten 1-0 by a John Carew strike.

Former Birmingham defender Upson, who moved to the Hammers last week, appeared to fall awkwardly and was replaced by Christian Dailly.

And before the break Norway striker Carew scored his first goal for the club to earn a 1-0 lead. The Hammers threw everything they had at Villa but were denied by both goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen and the woodwork in the second half.

Inspirational Morten Gamst Pedersen earned Blackburn a 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Ewood Park.

Rovers suffered an early blow with the loss of in-form striker Matt Derbyshire through injury in the 17th minute.

Brett Emerton crossed for Pedersen to head in at the far post before Jon Stead's composure and awareness saw him equalize by diverting the ball past Brad Friedel for the leveller.

Stephen Warnock was dismissed for a second caution in the closing stages before Pedersen floated home a sublime free-kick in added time.

Wigan striker Lee McCulloch's second-half strike proved Portsmouth's undoing in a 1-0 win at a foggy JJB Stadium. McCulloch advanced to hammer home the winner after 68 minutes after Pompey struggled to get the ball clear.

An opportunistic Heidar Helguson strike following Nicky Butt's mistake helped Fulham towards a 2-1 victory over Newcastle at Craven Cottage.

After a dull first 45 minutes a bad backpass by Butt from the left flank presented Helguson with an opportunity and the striker lashed home the opening goal. Brian McBride added the second after good work by Papa Bouba Diop before Obafemi Martins clawed one back in injury time.

Leroy Lita's two goals on the break gave Reading a 2-0 win at Manchester City.

After Micah Richards' attack broke down the Royals pounced and when Steve Sidwell fed his teammate, Lita fired home brilliantly with six minutes to play. More sloppy midfield play gave Lita another opportunity and he raced forward to fire home a second.

Meanwhile a turgid affair at Vicarage Road saw Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka's 63rd-minute goal secure Sam Allardyce three points against Watford. Hornets keeper Ben Foster was unable to clear Gary Speed's corner and Anelka was on hand to bundle home the winner.

Ten-man Arsenal came back from having a man sent off to draw 1-1 at Middlesbrough. Ayegbeni Yakubu opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Philippe Senderos, who was sent off for the foul. But the Gunners earned a point when Thierry Henry scored.

With the top three scheduled to play on Sunday and Bayern Munich losing a day earlier, Hertha Berlin made the most of their opportunity and closed the gap to just one point between themselves and the fourth-placed champions.

A 90th minute strike by substitute Mineiro saw Hertha fight from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory over bottom place Hamburg.

The northerners once again failed to hold onto a 1-0 lead and a lapse in concentration denied new coach Huub Stevens a dream debut on the HSV bench.

A late equalizer for Energie Cottbus in midweek cost Thomas Doll his job at Hamburg, and his successor Stevens found out straight away what problems he faces at the club. After Hamburg went ahead in the 33rd minute through Alexander Laas, Berlin hit back in the 78th minute through Arne Friedrich, before the Brazilian's late intervention stole all the points.

Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile, failed to make up ground on the leaders after they were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Wolfsburg, who ended their own eight-match winless streak with a fine display at the Volkswagen Arena.

Two goals from Mike Hanke (16 and 37), sandwiching a Stefan Kiessling (29) strike for Bayer, gave the Wolves a 2-1 interval lead but Bayer levelled after the break with a Peter van der Heyden own goal.

Diego Klimowicz (72) quickly restored Wolfsburg's lead with what proved to be the winner and Bayer finished the game with 10 men after the sending-off of Paul Freier. The win moved Klaus Augenthaler's team up to 11th place in the standings.

Hannover improved their European qualification chances with a sizzling 4-1 victory at Alemannia Aachen.

Chavdar Yankov (5), Jan Rosenthal (23) saw the visitors race into an early lead, before Laurentiu Reghecampf hit a 26th minute penalty to halve the deficit.

However, Szabolcs Huszti (31) also scored from the spot before Jiri Stajner (90) wrapped up a convincing win to leave Dieter Hecking's team well positioned in eighth place, while Aachen are in 15th.

In Bielefeld, Jos Luhukay got off to a fine start as Borussia Monchengladbach coach as his team snapped a 13-game winless run with a 2-0 victory at Arminia Bielefeld.

In the first game after the resignation of Jupp Heynckes, Frederico Insua opened the scoring in the 28th minute and Marcell Jansen struck in the 89th to give Gladbach their first road win of the season.

Despite the win, Luhukay's team remain in the relegation zone but will be confident of survival, while Bielefeld are in 10th place without a win in their last eight outings. Elsewhere, Energie Cottbus and Bochum continue to hover just above the relegation zone after sharing the points in a goalless draw at the Stadion der Freundschaft.

Another blank scoreline saw Mainz's battle to beat the drop being dealt a blow after they were held by local rivals Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank-Arena.

On Friday night, Nurnberg spoiled Ottmar Hitzfeld's return to the Bayern Munich bench with a 3-0 win at the Franken Stadium.

Ivan Saenko (13), Markus Schroth (20) and Robert Vittek (86) saw Nurnberg move to sixth, four points behind the champions, who lost for the sixth time this season. On Sunday leaders Werder Bremen clash with Schalke who are level on points while third-placed Stuttgart travel to play Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United restored its six-point lead at the top of the Barclays Premiership on Sunday but not without some controversy.

Manchester posted a 4-0 victory at Tottenham while Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of diving.

Ronaldo scored the opener at White Hart Lane on the stroke of halftime but he did not appear to be touched by Steed Malbranque or Lee Young-Pyo to earn the penalty he slammed home.

Nemanja Vidic, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs scored goals in the second half.

"This was such a big result for us," Scholes said. "We will keep plugging away and hopefully at the end of the season we will get our just rewards."

Victory, though, came at a cost as keeper Edwin van der Sar picked up an injury late with defender John O'Shea finishing the match in goal.

                    Christian Ronaldo

United's Ronaldo May Join Real, Barca at Season's End: Roundup

                    RONALDO REPORTS

Barcelona and Real Madrid are each prepared to pay 50 million pounds ($97.7 million) for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, the Sun said.

The 21-year-old Portuguese player may move to Spain at the end of the season, it reported, citing his agent Sergio Alves.

Ronaldo is Madrid's top target, according to Spanish media reports. United coach Alex Ferguson and Chief Executive Officer David Gill have said the player isn't for sale.

Madrid and Barcelona are prepared to pay 35 million pounds for the player, the Guardian said.

With the rumor winds swirling of his possible departure, Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo will not discuss his future, but admits it remains unclear.

"For the moment, I'm only thinking about training well every day," he said, according to ESPNSoccernet.

The 22-year-old Ronaldo, who played for his native Portugal in a 2-0 win over Brazil at Arsenal Tuesday night, has drawn interest Barcelona or Real Madrid since last summer.

"I don't know where I will be in the space of the next six months," Ronaldo said. "The only thing I am sure about is I want to continue at the level I've reached and aim to improve even more."

Ronaldo sure isn't letting his possible career move affect his performance. He has 15 goals for the Red Devils this season.

It has been reported that the Portugal coach told his compatriot to quit Old Trafford and head for Barcelona in the summer, yet he has denied ever making such a suggestion.

"I don't have any explanation on this matter, for what they wrote or didn't write," said Scolari. "It doesn't matter. What I say goes in one ear and out the other."

Ronaldo has been in awesome form for the Reds this season, and it is widely expected that both Barca and Real Madrid will try and tempt him to La Liga at the end of the campaign.

Premiership leader Manchester United and champion Chelsea maintained their blistering form as both teams rolled to wins Saturday, maintaining the Red Devils' six-point advantage in the standings.

While United beat struggling Charlton, 2-0, at Old Trafford, Chelsea posted a 3-0 victory at home to Middlesbrough.

United fullback Patrice Evra worked his way down the left before squeezing a looping center pass that was headed home by Park Ji-Sung headed after 24 minutes. Darren Fletcher made it 2-0 with a second-half header.

In West London, Didier Drogba curled home an excellent low free-kick in first-half injury-time to give his side the lead.

Andrew Taylor's left-wing cross had Petr Cech beaten but hit the woodwork and was cleared.

And Middlesbrough's hope was effectively ended when substitute Arjen Robben's shot was deflected in by Abel Xavier before Drogba grabbed his second.

A controversial penalty gave Newcastle a 2-1 win over Liverpool at a soaked St James' Park.

Liverpool scored the opener when goalkeeper Steve Harper's terrible clearance fell to Jermaine Pennant, who fed Craig Bellamy, and the controversial forward slammed home.

But another goalkeeping error gifted Newcastle an equalizer. Jose Reina rushed out to clear the ball but only succeeded in hitting defender Daniel Agger, allowing Obafemi Martins to slot home.

After the away side wasted several chances, the Magpies turned the game on its head when Nolberto Solano scored from the spot, after John Arne Riise fouled Steven Taylor and the defender was happy to go to ground.

Watford ground out its biggest win of the season with a 1-0 triumph in an eventful battle at West Ham.

A bubbling Upton Park was soon quietened when Darius Henderson's 12th-minute penalty found the net after he was fouled by Anton Ferdinand.

Nigel Reo-Coker broke through and earned a penalty when Gavin Mahon felled him in the box, only for Harewood to place his kick wide of Ben Foster's left-hand post. Chances came and went but it was Adrian Boothroyd's side who stole three precious points.

Andrew Johnson recovered immediately from his midweek England disappointment with an early winner in Everton's 1-0 win over Blackburn at Goodison Park.

After the Rovers failed to clear their lines, the ball was pumped into the area and Mikel Arteta flicked on with his head for Johnson to fire home after 10 minutes.

Sheffield United came from behind to beat Tottenham, 2-1, at Bramall Lane in an ill-tempered clash.

A brilliant combination between Robbie Keane and Jermaine Jenas gave Spurs a second-minute lead. Keane's excellent control and flick played Jenas through and the England squad player produced a magnificent lob over a stranded Paddy Kenny.

The Spurs were pegged back when Rob Hulse's header somehow squeezed home from Colin Kazim-Richards' corner.

And the Blades took the lead for the first time when Teemu Tainio fouled Stephen Quinn on the hour mark and Phil Jagielka fired home the resulting penalty.

Steve Sidwell's brace earned European hopefuls Reading a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the Madejski Stadium in the Premiership's early kickoff.

Manchester United maintained its six-point lead over champions Chelsea with a 2-0 victory over Charlton on Sunday that had Sir Alex Ferguson refusing to look over his shoulder as the title run takes shape.

Park Ji-Sung headed home after 24 minutes and Darren Fletcher made the game safe with a second.

"We are playing well and with a lot of confidence" Ferguson said. "Sometimes in these situations, there is a tendency to look over your shoulder and concentrate on the team that is chasing. I prefer to look forward because we have some really promising games coming up."

Chelsea saw off Middlesbrough, 3-0, at Stamford Bridge with two goals from Didier Drogba and an own goal from Abel Xavier keeping them in touch with the leaders.

The Blues have won their last five games, and Mourinho wants his side to maintain the pressure on United.

"I wanted Chelsea to win and win and win and, in the main, that is what we have done," Mourinho said. "Now we must keep on doing it. Credit to Manchester United, they are doing it too this season. We are in a battle. We cannot afford not to keep on winning, neither can they. We are enjoying it. To go on enjoying it, we must keep on winning. It is a simple philosophy."

A controversial penalty gave Newcastle a 2-1 win over Liverpool at a soaked St James' Park.

Liverpool went ahead through Craig Bellamy, but Obafemi Martins equalized before Nolberto Solano hit the winner from the penalty spot.

United boss Glen Roeder hailed the spirit of defender Celestine Babayaro, who played just hours after learning his younger brother had died at a London hospital.

"His younger brother has been suffering from tuberculosis and at 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, he lost his life," Roeder said. "After consulting his older brothers, who thought his younger brother would have wanted him to play, he came out and played."

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said his side should have capitalized on their first-half chances.

"After the first half, the score could have been 0-3 or 0-4," he said. "But we conceded a stupid goal and then a stupid penalty, and after that, it is difficult to win."

Bolton briefly went into fourth place following its 2-1 win over Fulham.

Gary Speed opened the scoring from the penalty spot and Kevin Nolan added a second. But Zat Knight pulled one back, and Bolton boss Sam Allardyce had goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for a crucial save in the dying moments.

"He is the best goalkeeper in the Premiership. That save proved it," Allardyce said. "His concentration was great and so was his positioning. He was there at such a crucial time and won us the three points."

Later Sunday, Arsenal leapfrogged back into fourth place, coming from behind yet again to beat struggling Wigan.

The Latics took a shocking lead on 35 minutes with a brilliant strike from Dutch midfielder Denny Landzaat. But an own goal from Fitz Hall and a winner from Tomas Rosicky gave Arsenal victory.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell was furious with referee Phil Dowd, who failed to award a penalty when Emile Heskey was fouled by Mathieu Flamini late in the second half.

"I thought we should have had a penalty which would hopefully have made it 2-0," Jewell blasted. "It is (a) penalty. He (Flamini) puts his hand on his shoulder. Why would Emile want to go down? Some of the officials don't understand the game.

"He (Dowd) has cost our team the points. It could cost us 50 million pounds."

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley refused to condemn the fans after a 1-0 loss in a relegation battle to bottom club Watford at Upton Park thanks to Darius Henderson's penalty.

The fans chanted that the players were "not fit to wear the shirts." To make matters worse, Marlon Harewood missed a second-half penalty.

"It's not nice, but the fans - and I'm not patronizing them - have been constant in their support for us," Curbishley said. "They have turned out in their droves and got behind us from the kickoff but we haven't delivered."

Andrew Johnson scored an early winner for Everton against Blackburn at Goodison Park just days after missing England's friendly with Spain due to an ankle injury.

Tottenham coach Martin Jol insists he is not under pressure after his side went down, 2-1, to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Jermaine Jenas put Spurs ahead, but Rob Hulse and a penalty from Phil Jagielka left them still looking for their first league win this year.

"We are very concerned. We have to get it right," Jol said. "It's not hopeless, but we are not as strong a team as we were last season. No. The only pressure I put myself under is to win, but we have to be a lot stronger than we are."

Steve Sidwell's brace earned European hopefuls Reading a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at the Madejski Stadium. Sidwell has yet to sign a new deal, but manager Steve Coppell says there will be no pressure placed on the player, even though his current deal expires in the summer.

Portsmouth substitute Kanu put his team back on the winning track with a late winner against Manchester City after Pedro Mendes had opened the scoring before suffering a bad injury courtesy of Joey Barton.

Bernardo Corradi grabbed a 62nd-minute City equalizer before Kanu's heroics nine minutes from time.

Manchester United can open a nine-point lead over champions Chelsea by beating Fulham in the Premier League this weekend. With Chelsea's attention on Sunday's League Cup final against Arsenal in Cardiff, leaders United visit Craven Cottage on Saturday determined to turn up the heat on their title rivals.

The confidence of the visitors will be high after Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League win over Lille. Fulham's morale was knocked after a 4-0 rout by Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup last weekend.

Alex Ferguson's side, who demolished Fulham 5-1 on the opening day of the season, are also boosted by a full-strength squad and the knowledge they could be 12 points ahead of Chelsea by the time the Londoners next play in the league.

On March 3, United travel to Liverpool for a 1245 start while Chelsea kick off at Portsmouth at 1715.

Third-placed Liverpool, who trail Chelsea by 10 points, play their first home match since the takeover by American sports tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks when they host Sheffield United on Saturday.

Javier Mascherano could make his first league appearance in a Liverpool shirt after his move from West Ham United was approved by the league this week.

The Argentina midfielder has vowed to make more of an impression than he did at his former club.

"I am aware this is an important step in my life and that my career will depend on what will happen at Liverpool. This is an opportunity I won't waste," he told the club's Web site (www.liverpoolfc.tv).

                            BURNING DESIRE

Bolton can leapfrog Arsenal into fourth place by winning at Tottenham on Sunday, who have gone almost two months without a home league victory.

"There is a burning desire in the camp that this will ultimately be our year when we get back into Europe," said Bolton captain Kevin Nolan.

Egypt striker Mido, who has not started a league game for Spurs since the end of December, should be fit after missing Wednesday's trip to Everton with a groin problem.

Elsewhere, second bottom Charlton Athletic host West Ham United, who are a place higher on goal difference.

West Ham, who have not won a league game since their surprise 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Dec. 17, go into Saturday's match on the back of a morale-crushing 1-0 league defeat by bottom team Watford.

Also on Saturday, Middlesbrough are at home to Reading and Everton visit Watford.

On Sunday, Newcastle United travel to Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers entertain Portsmouth.

Manchester United won 2-1 at Fulham on Cristiano Ronaldo's 88th-minute goal Saturday, moving nine points ahead of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.

Brian McBride opened the scoring at home for Fulham, and Ryan Giggs tied the score for United midway through the first half. Ronaldo then sent a deflected shot into the net.

"It's significant, winning the way we played today," Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said. "Fulham will feel very aggrieved at not winning the match."

United leads the league with 69 points. Defending champion Chelsea does not play in the Premier League this weekend because it faces Arsenal in Sunday's League Cup final.

Robbie Fowler scored twice on penalty kicks in Liverpool's 4-0 win over Sheffield United, and Charlton routed West Ham 4-0. Middlesbrough defeated Reading 2-1, and Watford beat Everton 3-0.

McBride scored his 12th goal of the season in the 17th minute. United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, a former Fulham player, blocked midfielder Simon Davies and the ball rolled to McBride, who hit a diagonal shot through Nemanja Vidic's legs and into the net.

Wayne Rooney set up Giggs in the 29th. Giggs also scored Tuesday in a 1-0 Champions League win at Lille.

McBride was taken off in the 79th minute, and defender Carlos Bocanegra played the entire match. Clint Dempsey was a 71st-minute substitute. Other Americans playing Saturday were goalkeepers Marcus Hahnemann (Reading) and Tim Howard (Everton), and defender Jay DeMerit (Watford).
