Chelsea kept the pressure on Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premiership table with a 1-0 victory Saturday over London rivals Tottenham in a lackluster game at Stamford Bridge.

Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho grabbed the only goal in the 52nd minute when he was allowed to advance and unleash a low shot from 35 yards. England goalkeeper Paul Robinson failed to get down on the shot.

Manchester United endured a 2-1 loss at Portsmouth in a night match. United was coming off its loss to Roma in the Champions League earlier in week.

With the loss, the Red Devils are only three points in front of Chelsea atop the standings.

The battle for top-flight survival is still tight with West Ham gaining a vital and surprising three points with a 1-0 victory at Arsenal.

The fourth-placed Gunners were in control for most of the match, but Bobby Zamora was clinical when he raced clear on the stroke of halftime and lobbed a left-footed shot over Jens Lehmann.

The Hammers' third straight win moved them to 29 points, just two behind Charlton, which drew with Manchester City on Friday, and Sheffield United, who lost, 2-1, to Newcastle on Saturday.

Sheffield United is in the relegation zone on goal differential after the defeat at Bramall Lane. Obafemi Martins' 17th-minute strike separated the teams at the break, but Frenchman Christian Nade drew the Blades level with a cool side-foot finish in the 74th minute.

The Magpies' winner came when Steven Taylor rose highest to head in James Milner's right-wing corner kick.

Wigan remain in deep trouble just two points above the drop zone after a 3-1 home loss to northwest rivals Bolton.

The Latics forged ahead when Paul Scharner burst into the box in the 32nd minute and squared the ball into the path of Emile Heskey, who bundled it over the line.

Sam Allardyce's men recovered, and Nicolas Anelka drew them level a minute before halftime. Wanderers took the lead in the 68th minute when El-Hadji Diouf played in Andranik Teymourian and the Iranian kept his nerve to score. He added his second five minutes later when he headed in Kevin Davies' cross.

Watford is nine points adrift of the bottom after a 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.

Gareth Southgate's men were ahead inside five minutes as Adam Johnson's cross from the right picked out Stewart Downing at the far post and he headed the ball back across goal for Mark Viduka to prod home from close range.

Damien Francis (23) leveled for the Hornets, but George Boateng's shot deflected in off teammate Chris Riggott to restore Boro's advantage four minutes later. Viduka added a third in the 75th minute and laid on a fourth for Fabio Rochemback.

Aston Villa eased its relegation worries by moving seven points clear of the bottom three with a 2-1 victory at Blackburn.

Benni McCarthy put Rovers in front with a 24th-minute penalty after Phil Bardsley had tripped Morten Gamst Pedersen. Villa hit back 10 minutes later as Bardsley supplied a cross from the right and Patrik Berger steered the ball past Brad Friedel.

Gareth Barry had a penalty saved by Friedel in the second minute of the second half, but Martin O'Neill's men were not to be denied and Gabriel Agbonlahor raced clear to score in the 73rd minute.

Liverpool moved three points clear of Arsenal in third with a 1-1 draw at Reading.

Peter Crouch slipped the ball through for the advancing Alvaro Arbeloa, who curled a shot past Marcus Hahnemann in the 15th minute. Reading equalized in the 47th minute when Brynjar Gunnarsson angled a shot in across Jose Reina.

Bolton Wanderers squandered a chance to leap into a Champions League position when they were held 1-1 at home by Everton while fourth-placed Arsenal drew 0-0 at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday.

Arsenal stayed two points ahead of Bolton on 56 while leaders Manchester United (7, second-placed Chelsea (75) and Liverpool (60) prepared for midweek Champions League quarter-final, second leg matches.

Striker Kevin Davies put Bolton ahead in the 18th minute when he beat the offside trap to volley home Ivan Campo's free kick but James Vaughan equalised for Everton against the run of play in the 33rd.

At St James' Park, Arsenal ended a run of three consecutive defeats but they have only scored once in four games.

Newcastle defender Nolberto Solano twice saved on the line from Gilberto Silva in a goalmouth scramble near the end of a second half that began with James Milner hitting the Arsenal bar with a swerving cross.

"Both teams had good defensive performances and it was a game of few chances but after three defeats it was important not to lose," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told reporters.

"This could be a good point at the end of the season."

        CITY RUN

Manchester City passed their relegation worries to Fulham after a surprise 3-1 win at Craven Cottage, a third away victory in succession helping them climb to 12th place on 40 points. Fulham, on 35, are four points above the drop zone.

Wigan Athletic's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa left them three points above the relegation places.

The visitors played with 10 men for 57 minutes after Ecuador's Luis Antonio Valencia was sent off for a two-footed lunge at Villa's Dutch defender Wilfred Bouma.

Charlton Athletic, in 17th spot on 32 points, moved a point above the relegation zone after a 0-0 draw at home to Reading.

Bottom club Watford romped to their biggest league win of the season, 4-2 at home to Portsmouth, but it has almost certainly come too late to avoid the drop. They are nine points from safety with five games left.

In the second division, Roy Keane's Sunderland won 2-1 at Southampton to go top, one point above Derby County in the two automatic promotion places.

Sunderland are unbeaten in 16 league matches this year.

Arsenal spurned two late chances in their battle for a Champions League place as they ran to a scoreless draw at Newcastle on Monday.

Liverpool, not in action due to Champions League duty, is four points ahead of the Gunners, who followed their defeat to relegation strugglers West Ham with another disappointing result. Arsene Wenger's side could lose out to Bolton for a Champions League spot.

Close-range efforts from Julio Baptista and Gilberto were blocked on the line, first by Steven Taylor, then by Nolberto Solano. Damien Duff went close twice for Newcastle inside the final four minutes of the first half and defender Oguchi Onyewu forced a reaction save from Jens Lehmann.

Bolton and Everton stayed unchanged in fifth and sixth place, respectively, after a 1-1 draw at Reebok Stadium.

Everton's defense paid the price for a breakdown in communication when every defender except Joleon Lescott attempted to play Bolton offside from Ivan Campo's free kick. That left four Bolton attackers in the clear but Kevin Davies, who took the ball on his chest, needed no one as he rifled the ball past Tim Howard.

Everton equalized when a lack of concentration in the Wanderers' backline allowed youngster James Vaughan to steal in, take possession and finish calmly. Vaughan's injury curse hit once more, though, as he went off on a stretcher.

Relegation-threatened Watford had earlier given their their slim survival hopes a boost - and limbered up for next weekend's FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United - with a fine performance in their 4-2 victory over Portsmouth.

It was a reversal of fortunes for both sides, with Watford claiming a first league win since February 10 and Pompey failing to capitalize on their weekend win over leaders United.

Matt Taylor added another stunning goal to his collection with a long-range curler before a foul on Tamas Priskin allowed Hameur Bouazza to equalize from the penalty spot. That prevented David James from getting his hands on David Seaman's Premiership shutout record for another week.

Gavin Mahon scored a thunderbolt to put Watford ahead before two classy second-half goals from Priskin and Bouazza putting the result beyond doubt. Arnold Mvuemba scored Portsmouth's second, his first of the season.

Stuart Pearce saw a lively performance from his Manchester City side in a 3-1 victory over Fulham, meaning City's relegation worries are all but over.

City's first goal came when Joey Barton - who had already won a corner, from which Richard Dunne nearly scored - ghosted in behind the home defense before firing a first-time strike low past Antti Niemi.

Winger DaMarcus Beasley scored the second goal, powering the ball home from a tight angle after finding room at Antti Niemi's near post.

The Cottagers started to self-destruct on the hour mark when Emile Mpenza's pass found Darius Vassell after Liam Rosenior's untimely slip, allowing the former England man to finish coolly.

Chris Coleman's side hit back with 15 minutes remaining when American defender Carlos Bocanegra powered in a fierce close-range header. But it was not enough to inspire a comeback.

Aston Villa came from behind to take a 1-1 draw at Wigan but failed to make the most of its numerical advantage.

Emile Heskey, who scored his 100th career league goal over the weekend, broke the deadlock when he took advantage of a floored Thomas Sorensen to bury Lee McCulloch's header across goal.

Wigan's chances took a nosedive soon afterward when Antonio Valencia was sent off following a foul on Dutch defender Wilfred Bouma. Craig Gardner had the ball in the net for the hosts five minutes before the whistle but the referee had already blown and the strike was stricken.

Five minutes after the restart and Villa level, Patrick Berger placing a low cross into the six-yard box where Gabriel Agbonlahor slipped between two defenders to deflect the ball just over the line.

Manchester United booked their place in the first FA Cup final at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium when they beat Watford 4-1 in an entertaining semi-final at Villa Park on Saturday.

Two goals from Wayne Rooney and one each for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kieran Richardson secured United's path into the May 19 final, the first at Wembley since 2000, when they will face either Chelsea or Blackburn Rovers, who meet at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United, who will be appearing in a record 18th final, have won the competition a record 11 times and have now reached their eighth FA Cup final under manager Alex Ferguson.

The victory keeps them on course to win three trophies this season -- the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Champions League -- and repeat the treble they achieved in 1999.

                  BLISTERING SHOT

Rooney put United ahead after seven minutes when he cut inside his marker, made space for himself and smashed home a blistering right-foot shot that left goalkeeper Richard Lee -- a diehard United fan as a child -- diving in despair.

Although United were largely in control, Watford replied with a surprising equaliser after 26 minutes when Hameur Bouazza latched on to a loose ball and volleyed it past van der Sar.

But the Hornets were only level for two minutes and were powerless to prevent United going back in front after 28 minutes with a typically forceful move and goal.

Rooney was the architect, storming down the right wing and outpacing the chasing defenders before attempting a shot that bounced back off Lee into the path of Ronaldo who swept the ball into an empty net from two metres out -- the perfect way to celebrate the new five year, 31 million pounds ($61.59 million) contract he signed this week.

Lee then kept Watford in the match with an outstanding save from a Rooney shot after an intricately worked move but the England striker was on hand for the third in the 66th minute when he turned in a low Alan Smith cross.

Rooney then had a couple of chances to become the first player since United's Alex Dawson in 1958 to score a hat-trick in a semi-final before Richardson completed a somewhat flattering scoreline in the 82nd minute, five minutes after coming on as a substitute.

The only blot on United's victory was when defender Rio Ferdinand aggravated a groin strain and had to go off late in the first half.

West Ham's hopes of Premiership survival were dealt a crushing blow Saturday with a 3-0 loss at relegation rivals Sheffield United.

The Blades saved their best performance of the season for when it mattered most as they climbed out of the drop zone and left their opponents on the brink.

Michael Tonge's wonderful free kick put United ahead six minutes before the half after the ball crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

Having taken just one point from the last 15, United doubled their advantage when a corner was met by Phil Jagielka, who climbed above his marker and powered a downward header into the far side of the net.

The game was over when Jon Stead completed the scoring 12 minutes from time. Cesc Fabregas scored his first Premiership goal of the season as Arsenal were forced to come from behind against Bolton to hold on to the fourth and final Champions League spot.

Bolton threatened to climb above them when Nicolas Anelka netted his third goal against the Gunners this season but Tomas Rosicky levelled before half-time and Fabregas netted 30 seconds after the restart before Ivan Campo's later sending off.

Both first-half goals came from defensive errors; Jens Lehmann was only able to parry a free-kick straight to Anelka, who scored. The Gunners' equalizer arrived when Nicky Hunt tried to chest down Emmanuel Adebayor's cross but Rosicky stole in to prod the ball home.

Despite finding the winner so soon after the interval, Fabregas took his time before firing past Jussi Jaaskelainen. The game was up for Bolton when Ivan Campo was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Lawrie Sanchez's first match as Fulham caretaker boss did not go to plan as Reading beat them 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

Looking to halt an eight-match winless run in all competitions that cost Chris Coleman his job this week, the Cottagers lost to Stephen Hunt's 15th-minute effort, leaving them just three points clear of the bottom three.

Matt Taylor scored another screamer as Portsmouth reignited their European push with a 2-1 win over Newcastle.

Steven Taylor's mistake handed Pompey a seventh-minute lead at Fratton Park, the defender getting the ball caught under his feet, allowing Benjani Mwaruwari to send Steve Harper the wrong way.

For the second Pompey's Taylor unleashed a trademark 30-yard drive, which flew across Harper and into the far corner of the net.

The visitors were given hope when Portsmouth captain Dejan Stefanovic tripped James Milner in the penalty area and Emre stepped up to narrowly beat David James.

The veteran keeper will once again be forced to wait another week to claim the Premiership's clean sheet record.

Aston Villa's resurgence continued as they recovered from Thomas Sorensen's howler to beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at the Riverside.

Villa keeper Sorensen gifted Boro a 13th-minute lead, the goalkeeper spilling Fabio Rochemback's 30-yard free-kick into the net.

Craig Gardner slotted home his first Premiership goal on the stroke of half-time to equalize before substitute Luke Moore and Stiliyan Petrov scored in a convincing second-half performance for the visitors.

The only goalless game was at the City of Manchester Stadium, where Manchester City and third-placed Liverpool cancelled each other out.

                    • Jubilant Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock warned the Barclays Premiership basement boys not to write his side off.

The Blades gave themselves a vital shot in the arm with a precious 3-0 home victory over fellow strugglers West Ham as the fight for survival took a new twist.

"I don't think there was anything significant in the result other than we showed we are still very much in it after people had written us off over the last few weeks," Warnock said.

"I think the media have presumed both West Ham and Charlton would finish above us. But we have brought other teams into it now, which we wanted to do, and I don't think anybody can say who is safe and who is not."

Michael Tonge fired the home side ahead with a superb free-kick six minutes before the break, and Phil Jagielka's 68th-minute header set the stage for Jon Stead to wrap up the points with a fine finish 12 minutes from time.

Victory lifted the Blades out of the drop zone and left the Hammers five points from safety, although manager Alan Curbishley took a philosophical approach.

"For the last couple of weeks, we have known that we need to win most of our games - that hasn't changed," Curbishley said. "For the last couple of weeks, we have been looking at other people's results - and that won't change."

At the other end of the table, Arsenal took a major stride towards killing off Bolton's designs on fourth place with a 2-1 win over Sam Allardyce's side at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had to come from behind after former striker Nicolas Anelka put the visitors ahead, Tomas Rosicky and Cesc Fabregas ensuring the gap between the two sides was stretched to five points.

"With a team, you live in a tunnel and sometimes you have to experience going down and flirting with Hell to see how much you can deal with that to become stronger," manager Arsene Wenger said.

"We had a disappointing three or four weeks and I am very well with how the team has responded. I respect the way they have behaved in the last three weeks, even if they were most painful three weeks of the season."

Allardyce, who saw Ivan Campo dismissed for two bookable offences, was left to rue referee Rob Styles' decision not to award a penalty after the ball appeared to hit Emmanuel Eboue's arm.

Bolton's disappointment increased when James McFadden's injury-time strike condemned Charlton to a 2-1 defeat and eased his side into fifth place on goal difference after Darren Bent had cancelled out Joleon Lescott's 81st-minute opener in a dramatic finish at Goodison Park.

Tottenham had to settle for a point in the race for UEFA Cup qualification after three times coming from behind at Wigan to draw 3-3.

Emile Heskey, Leighton Baines and Kevin Kilbane all struck to give Paul Jewell's side hope of easing their relegation worries, but Dimitar Berbatov and a Robbie Keane double saw Spurs fight back.

Another Matt Taylor piledriver proved the difference between Portsmouth and Newcastle as Pompey ran out 2-1 winners at Fratton Park to maintain their European hopes.

Reading remain hot on their heels courtesy of the Stephen Hunt goal which clinched a narrow home victory over Fulham, while Aston Villa climbed into the top half of the table as strikes from Craig Gardner, Luke Moore and Stilian Petrov secured a 3-1 victory at Middlesbrough.

Manchester City held Champions League semi-finalists Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Eastlands to extend their unbeaten run to five games.

                      • The Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award will be a case of Manchester United against the rest this season.

United dominate the award nominations with three players making the six-man shortlist.

Alongside overwhelming favourite Cristiano Ronaldo are his veteran team-mates Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs as well as Chelsea's Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba, Arsenal's Spanish playmaker Cesc Fabregas and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, last year's winner.

The award will be presented on April 22 when a United player could win it for the first time since Ruud van Nistelrooy was honoured by his peers in 2002.

Ronaldo, 22, or even 19-year-old Fabregas could be in for a unique double as both are nominated for the Young Player of the Year award category as well, alongside Wayne Rooney, the winner the last two seasons.

Reading striker Kevin Doyle, 23, Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon, 19, and 18-year-old defender Micah Richards, of Manchester City, who won his first England caps this season, are the other nominees.

Most observers believe the main award is a straight fight between Chelsea's Drogba and flying Portuguese winger Ronaldo, with the latter the clear favourite.

Ronaldo has been in startling form this season, scoring 21 goals from midfield as he has inspired United to top of the Premiership, the FA Cup final and Champions League semi-finals.

But Drogba has already passed the 30-goal mark for the season as Chelsea, who have already won the League Cup, chase an unprecedented treble.

Scholes and Giggs have both come in for high praise in the twighlight of the two veterans' careers as both have been instrumental in United's success.

Gerrard has as usual been Liverpool's heart-beat this season with Fabregas rapidly maturing at Arsenal, where he pulls the strings.

With voting among the players themselves now finished, the winners in each category will be revealed at the end of a gala dinner in London on Sunday night.

The PFA Fans Player of the Year, which is polled each month across the season, will also be announced. Football supporters will, meanwhile, get their chance to take part in a public 'Guess The Winners' vote.

                            • Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was Tuesday fined 2,500 pounds by the Football Association for an outburst at match officials during his side's 2-2 draw with Portsmouth on December 16.

It is the second time this season that the Frenchman has been fined for his touchline conduct and he may struggle to avoid a ban from the dugout when a third charge is finally heard.

Wenger was sent to the stands for the second half of the Premiership clash after angrily confronting both the fourth official and referee Steve Bennett at half-time over the free-kick which led to Portsmouth's opening goal in first-half stoppage time.

That led to fresh disciplinary charges being imposed just days after the Frenchman was fined 10,000 pounds for a touchline confrontation with then-West Ham manager Alan Pardew in October of last year.

Wenger is currently awaiting a date for a hearing on improper conduct charges related to comments about a linesman in his side's stormy League Cup defeat by Chelsea at the end of February.

The Arsenal manager accused the linesman of lying by saying in his match report that Emmanuel Adebayor, one of two Arsenal players to be sent off, had hit Chelsea's Frank Lampard.

The FA subsequently revealed that the linesman had only reported that Adebayor had been behaving in an aggressive fashion.
