In one of the biggest surprises in the women’s singles of the US Open Aravane Rezai defeated the No. 15 seed Anna-Lena Grönefeld. The match was part of the first round of games and took place on Monday August 28th in Court 6 of the US Open fields. Rezai won the game 2-6 6-0 6-4. This was an outstanding performance, and a reason for all Rezai fans to cheer.
While the game started out in favor of Grönefeld in the first set, Rezai started to take a lead shortly into the game, with a score of 6-2. Keeping things calm and cool, Rezai managed to command the court in the second set. Her serves were steady, controlled and the 6-0 did enough to rattle the 15th seed player. In the final round, competition heated up, when Grönefeld tried to come back with some hard serves. In the end, Rezai fought off important game points to seal the decisive break. She won the final set with an exciting 6-4 score.
This was not the first win for Rezai against the German. In a previous match, Rezai pounded the inconsistent player and won the game 7-6(2), 2-6,6-3. The Iranian tour-de-force started her tennis career age 7. Similar to fellow tennis player Andre Agassi, Rezai’s father, Arsalan, was the reason she became involved with the sport. Today, Arsalan Rezai is her devoted coach. Her family includes mom, Nouchine, a physiotherapis, brother Anauch, and sister Caminde. While Rezai plays under the French flag, she reportedly goes to Iran for tennis training and is very focused on her game. She has so far won $116,846 USD in prize money. She has also won two gold medals at the Muslim Women Olympic Games in Iran.
Rezai next meets Lucie Safarova, in the second round of the US Opens. This will be the first career meeting for the two players. We will be following her closely. After all, at only 19 years old, she is the most promising player and I am not just saying that because of her fantastic last name!
