  • Alexander McQueen is to design a special collection for mass retailer Target. The line is part of a new fashion program, Target Designer Collaborations, in which McQueen is the first designer to participate. The collection will be called McQ Alexander McQueen for Target and is an extended version of his McQ diffusion line.
Leila Moss, singer of the British The Duke Spirit, was McQueen`s muse for this capsule collection. The collection will feature lightweight knits, skinny jeans, bubble dresses and cuffed shorts. It will also include swimwear and cotton voile print scarves. The clothing will be available from March 2009, for a limited time only.

Target Designer Collaborations is aimed to be an ongoing program that will bring a series of established designers to the masses at low prices. Each collection will appear in a very limited edition and every designer chosen will chose a muse or collaborative partner to inspire the entire collection.

The new fashion program is a separate label from Target's Go International, which focuses on young or emerging designers and, in the past, has featured names such as Proenza Schouler, Luella Bartley, Behnaz Sarafpour, Rogan and Richard Chai. These collections have been instant hits, selling out in days.

McQueen, who established his secondary line, McQ Alexander McQueen, last year, said at the time that it's "younger and more renegade [than the main collection], but always signature McQueen."

      • Thousands of Iranian women have been cautioned over their poor Islamic dress this week and several hundred arrested in the capital Tehran in the most fierce crackdown on what's known as "bad hijab" for more than a decade.
It is the talk of the town. The latest police crackdown on Islamic dress has angered many Iranians - male, female, young and old.

But Iranian TV has reported that an opinion poll conducted in Tehran found 86% of people were in favour of the crackdown - a statistic that is surprising given the strength of feeling against this move.

Police cars are stationed outside major shopping centres in Tehran.

They are stopping pedestrians and even cars - warning female drivers not to show any hair - and impounding the vehicles and arresting the women if they argue back.

Middle-aged women, foreign tourists and journalists have all been harassed, not just the young and fashionably dressed.

        Individual choice

Overnight the standard of what is acceptable dress has slipped back.

I want the whole world to know that they oppress us and all we can do is put up with it

        Tofiq, 15

Hard-won freedoms - like the right to wear a colourful headscarf - have been snatched away.

It may sound trivial but Iranian women have found ways of expressing their individuality and returning to drab colours like black, grey and dark blue is not something they will accept easily.

"If we want to do something we will do it anyway, all this is total nonsense," says a young girl, heavily made up and dressed up.

She believes Islamic dress should be something personal - whether you're swathed in a black chador or dressed in what she calls "more normal clothes".

Interestingly many women who choose to wear the all enveloping chador agree - saying it's a personal choice and shouldn't be forced on people.

"This year is much worse than before because the newspapers and the TV have given the issue a lot of coverage compared to last year; it wasn't this bad before," says Shabnam who's out shopping with her friend.

        Permission denied

At the start of every summer the police say they will enforce the Islamic dress code, but this year has been unusually harsh.

Thousands of women have been cautioned by police over their dress, some have been obliged to sign statements that they will do better in the future, and some face court cases against them.

Even shop mannequins considered "too revealing" are dealt with

Though the authorities want coverage internally to scare women - they don't want the story broadcast abroad.

The BBC's cameraman was detained when he tried to film the police at work and the government denied us permission to go on patrol with the police.

"Really we don't have any security," complains Shabam's friend Leyla.

"Since we came out this morning many people we met have continuously warned us to be careful about our headscarves and to wear them further forward because they are arresting women who are dressed like this," she says.

Boutique owners are furious. Some shops have been sealed - others warned not to sell tight revealing clothing.

One shopkeeper selling evening dresses told us the moral police had ordered him to saw off the breasts of his mannequins because they were too revealing.

He said he wasn't the only shop to receive this strange instruction.

        Respect

There's even been less traffic on the streets because some women are not venturing out - fearful they will be harassed.

And it's not even safe in a car. Taxi agencies have received a circular warning them not to carry a "bad hijabi".

"They have said we shouldn't carry passengers who wear bad Islamic dress and if we do we have to warn them to respect the Islamic dress code even inside the car," said one taxi driver.

And it's not just women who are being targeted this year.

Young men are being cautioned for wearing short sleeved shirts or for their hairstyles.

Morad - a hairdresser whose gelled hair is made to stand straight up - says it's necessary for him to look like this to attract customers.

"These last few days I don't dare walk down the main roads looking like this case I get arrested," he says.

"I use the side streets and alleys."

Morad is scared because his friends have told him they've seen the police seize young men and forcibly cut their hair if it's too long.

Fifteen-year-old Tofiq who'd also gelled his hair to stand on end said he too was afraid but he wasn't going to change.

"I want the whole world to know that they oppress us and all we can do is put up with it," he said.

Some parents have complained that harassing the young over their clothing will only push them to leave the country.

But one MP has said those Iranians who cannot cope with Islamic laws should leave.

Some commentators have suggested that the government is conducting this crackdown to distract attention from the rising cost of living in Iran and increasing tension with the international community over the nuclear issue.

If so, it's a strategy that risks alienating people who've got used to years of relative social freedom and do not want to return to the early days of the revolution when dress rules were much more tightly enforced.

          • In 2004, director Kuku Kohli’s film Woh Tera Naam Tha, came and went.

But it was four years later, in 2008 that audience sat up and took notice of Arjan Bajwa, the actor who played the lead against Priyanka Chopra in Fashion. Ask him if he considers Woh... his debut and he says, “I won’t call it a debut, it was more of a joke.” So then what does he consider his debut film? “Depends on what you call a debut role. If it’s a lead role then I would say Fashion, but it it’s debut in acting, it would be Guru,” answers Arjan.

Indeed, it was his role as the suave businessman in that film that caught director Madhur Bhandarkar’s eye and made him cast Arjan in Fashion. And Arjan must be thanking his lucky stars that he got to work with directors as diverse as Mani Ratnam and Bhandarkar in the beginning of his career. “That’s a conscious effort from my side and will remain so. There are certain directors, certain stories and roles I would like to do and I’m working towards it. Even now I’m being offered lots of scripts but I’m still considering them,” he adds. Post Fashion, Arjan hasn’t signed anything yet but says that “only good and different scripts are getting my nod.” He’s done mostly romantic roles till now so it comes as a surprise when he says he would like to do action-oriented roles. “I want to do some aggressive, dark roles,” he adds.

Flashback to Fashion, Arjan admits that he wasn’t very keen to take on the film when it was offered to him. Not because he wasn’t happy with the role or the film, but because he wasn’t in the right frame of mind as his father had recently passed away. “I didn’t know if I wanted to work at all. But then my family encouraged me and here I am!” he says with a smile.

But wasn’t he apprehensive about taking on a role in a woman-centric film? “Not at all, I was well aware about my role and its length. But there were some things I was convinced about. First, the director, I knew Madhur would make a good realistic film. Secondly I was to be paired opposite Priyanka Chopra. Third, I knew the producers had a great track record and fourth, my character, who was the only one in the film to not have a negative side to him,” he replies. His nod to this project paid off and Arjan admits that he’s been receiving a lot of positive response from the industry. “The biggest assurance I’ve got is people telling me they liked me for my acting, which they thought was very natural,” he says.

                  • Prince Charles has beaten off competition from US President Barack Obama to be named the world's best dressed man by Esquire magazine.

"He is perfectly turned out in a double-breasted suit. Admirably, the prince keeps his wardrobe in appropriate style: we're told he has a room laid out like a tailor's shop," the men's magazine said.

Prince Charles, 60, keeps it simple and has worn suits by Saville Row tailors Gieves and Hawkes, complete with pocket handkerchief and silk tie, for years. Esquire said he was "always incredibly well dressed".

The prince, who is heir to the British throne, beat off competition from Obama -- who came fourth in the top ten -- artist David Hockney (seventh), tennis player Roger Federer (eighth) and US rapper Andre 3000 (tenth).

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, however, was named one of the worst dressed, with the magazine noting he had once "turned up in the Iraqi desert wearing black lace-ups".

London Mayor Boris Johnson -- renowned for his slightly chaotic appearance -- was also criticised for having "jacket pockets like second-hand bookshops, and hair the result of an encounter with a ghost in a wind tunnel".

                          • Ever since Michelle Obama chose his elegant cream gown for her inaugural appearance months ago, Jason Wu’s name has kept the fashion world buzzing. At the Grey Gardens premiere event in N.Y.C. earlier this week, the tastemaker took a moment to talk with FabSugar about creating for his most high-profile fan. “It’s fantastic,” he said of Michelle selecting the now-iconic gown, “And to have a dress in the Smithsonian is not too shabby either.” While at 26 years old, Wu might be young to have achieved such a high-profile stature, he’s grounded enough not to get caught up in the fame. “As a designer I’m always creative,” he says. “To me just right now, I’m just buried in my work and haven’t had a moment to think about it.” But despite his busy schedule, his newfound place in Washington history hasn’t gone unnoticed by Jason. “Someone pointed out to me, ‘Your dress is going to outlive you.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s pretty great!’

                            • As if she’s not busy enough with her starring role in Gossip Girl — and off-screen romance with costar Ed Westwick — Jessica Szohr is teaming up with Dove to host a series of mini-episodes that take you into a real-life version of those stylish young New Yorkers who inspired the show. GOSSIP GIRL: Real NYC Stories Revealed, part of Dove’s go fresh campaign, will feature “inspirational stories from four real girls who have grown up on the Upper East Side of New York City,” and how they deal with careers, finances, success and relationships. And one added bonus of her newest role, she points out, is getting to try out all Dove’s newest products.

                              Her favorite?

“Dove go fresh Burst Body Wash because it’s so important for me to start my day off right.” Overall, Jessica’s beauty philosophy falls in line with the Real Beauty concept that drew her to partner with Dove. “Less is certainly more when it comes to makeup for me,” she says. “When I am not working, I usually just rely on clean skin, soft skin then stick to the basics — foundation, powder and a great mascara.” But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know how to get glam.

“I love Nars lip glosses,” she says, and “Stila Smudge pots do amazing things for your eyes.” Be sure to tune in on Monday to see Jessica’s teaser for GOSSIP GIRL: Real NYC Stories Revealed then stick around after the show on the 27th to see how Dove’s real Gossip Girls compare the show’s on-screen characters.
