Family, food big parts of Norooz

March has been busy for Persians in the Tri-Cities. Homes have been swept clean and decorated. Desserts have been made. Sprouts have been sowed. New outfits have been bought and pressed.
The customs have been observed not only to mark the first day of spring but also for the start of the Persian New Year on March 20.
“It’s a fresh start,” said Ebby Mohseni, a Coquitlam resident who immigrated from Tehran with his family 19 years ago. “It’s a time of celebration and reunion.”
It’s also a time for giving and forgiving as past grudges must be set aside to make way for the New Year.
“If you have a fight with someone, then you have to make the effort to visit them and talk to them,” Mohseni said. “That’s the way it is.”
Visiting relatives and friends is the main activity during the 13 days of Norooz Festival (meaning ‘New Day’), which is mainly celebrated in Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Georgia, Iraq, Tajikistan, Syria, Armenia and India.
Reunions with grandparents are done on the first day, followed by parents, then, younger family members.
During the visits, special fish and vegetable dishes – and sweets – are eaten “so, by the end of it, you have to go on a diet,” Mohseni joked.
On the last day of the festival, the celebrations are taken outside for a picnic to meet new friends.
Boys and girls — and sometimes newlyweds — traditionally tie a knot in a blade of grass. When the knot comes undone, it is believed their wish will come true.
This year, Persian New Year 1385 officially starts here at 10:25:35 a.m. Monday, March 20.
But tonight (Wednesday), a Halloween-like party, called Chahar Shanbeh Suri, is observed at which revellers jump over a small bonfire and shout “Give me your beautiful red colour and take back my sickly pallor” in Farsi.
The purification ritual is meant to keep illnesses away all year, Mohseni said.
Although controlled fires are usually seen on the streets, there is a city in Iran that lights bonfires on rooftops “and, if you fly over the city, it looks like it’s on fire,” Mohseni said.
New Year’s Eve itself is marked with a traditional meal and prayers.
A major part of Persian New Year is setting a special table with seven specific items. In ancient times, each of the items corresponded to one of the seven creations and the seven holy immortals protecting them.
Mohseni, who hosts a show on 93.1 FM CKYE (Vancouver Persian radio), said his family also listens to the radio to hear the annual address by the Iranian president. “We want to hear his vision for the new year,” he said. “It is usually something promising.”
