Russian Mafia: Organized Crime
Is Big Business for the KGB
While there may be thousands of mafia groups in Russia only a handful are large enough to maintain a serious threat.
The biggest gangs are the Dolgopruadnanskaya and the Solntsevskaya.
The latter, named after the Moscow suburb of Solntsevo from which it hails, has around 5,000 members.
Its leader is believed to be Sergei Mikhailov, known as Mikhas, who is being held by the authorities in Switzerland.
The Solntsevskaya specialises in drugs and gun smuggling but is not averse to extortion and the American hotelier Paul Tatum, who was shot dead in 1995, claimed they had threatened his life only a few weeks before.
Routine extortion
Extortion has become a way of life in Russia.
Canadian entrepreneur Doug Steele owns a Moscow nightclub called The Hungry Duck and reckons he has paid out £625,000 ($1m) in pay-offs to police, officials and the mafia.
Mr Steele, who has already survived one kidnapping attempt, says: "You have to grease the palm or you won't be in business.
"If it was not for the mafia there would not be an economy. They are a major driving force behind what goes on here."
In Moscow, the Ostankino and Lubertsy clans are significant players.
In St Petersburg, the underworld is beginning to be dominated by the Tambov syndicate, based in the eponymous town 200 miles (330km) from Moscow and headed by Vladimir Gavrilenkov.
Chechens and Georgians, like Sicilians and Neapolitans, have played a disproportionately large role in the underworld.
The largest Chechen mafia is the Obshina, who have made much of their money from bank robberies, kidnapping and white collar crime.
Their leader, Nikolay Suleimanov, currently is trying to elbow his way into the lucrative East European cigarette smuggling racket.
Laundering mafia money
Any institution with access to large amounts of money can expect a visit from the mafia.
The Afghan veterans' association, which has a welfare role similar to the British Legion or the Vietnam Veterans' Association, is thought to have been used to launder dirty money.
Its head was murdered in 1994 and it split into two groups.
The head of one branch, Valery Radchikov, survived an assassination attempt the following year.
In November 1996 the leader of the other faction, Sergei Trakhirov, his wife and 11 others were killed when a bomb exploded in a cemetery during a funeral.
Mafia invades New York
When the Russian mafia began to move into the United States it chose Vyacheslav Ivankov, known as Yaponchik or "Little Japanese", to head its New York operation.
He was convicted in November 1997 in a £3.5m ($5.9m) extortion case.
Louis Freeh, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said: "In 10 or 20 years Ivankov would have been a very, very dangerous criminal leader, not just in the United States but worldwide."
The FBI believes his place as head of the Russian mafia in America has already been filled.
It will take more than one court case to stop the Russian mafia's worldwide expansion.

Defense attorneys: Mexican Mafia doesn't exist.
Jurors began deliberations May 16 after a six-month trial before U.S. District Judge Ronald Lew. The trial marked the first time a gang was prosecuted in Los Angeles under RICO.
Prosecutors characterized the Mafia as a brutal crime syndicate run from maximum-security prison cells at Pelican Bay State Prison.
The government maintained the gang, with as many as 400 members, controls narcotics trafficking and money laundering among Hispanic street gangs in Southern California, along with much of the related violence.
Defense attorneys denied the existence of a Mexican Mafia, and claimed their clients were framed. None of the 13 defendants testified in the trial.

The mafia in Israel
Las Vegas has new crime element: Israeli mob.
WITH ITS FREE flow of cash and high-stakes gambling, Las Vegas has always been an attractive target of opportunity for organized crime.
For years the traditional La Cosa Nostra dominated street rackets here and even managed to gain hidden interests in casinos on the Strip. We were considered an "open city" for more than two dozen of the nation's Mafia families.
Today Las Vegas still is considered fertile ground for organized crime, but as the mob's influence has waned because of stepped-up pressure from law enforcement authorities, other criminal groups have risen to prominence on the streets.
In recent months authorities have discovered that Israeli organized crime syndicates have set their sights on Las Vegas. One ranking crime figure was overheard a year ago by lawmen on court-approved wiretaps describing Las Vegas as "wide open" territory.
"They're really trying to rear their ugly head in Las Vegas," says Sheriff Bill Young, who has detectives assigned to a joint federal drug task force investigating the Israeli crime connection here.
The Israeli syndicates are involved in traditional rackets, such as loan sharking, extortion, money laundering, prostitution and illegal gambling.
And they're just as violent as the Mafia. Two of the biggest families, one based in Jerusalem and the other in Tel Aviv, currently are involved in a bloody war over control of street rackets in Israel.
But unlike the Mafia, the Israeli crime groups are far more sophisticated and have far-reaching international tentacles. Key members of the groups have homes in multiple countries and make most of their money importing cocaine and the club drug Ecstasy (MDMA) from Europe into the United States. Las Vegas has been the site of some Ecstasy deals, drug task force affidavits revealed.

Since the conviction of "Dapper Don" John Gotti, the Genovese family has been considered New York's-and the U.S.'s-most powerful La Cosa Nostra family.

Dawood Ibrahim (also known as Dawood Ebrahim and Sheikh Dawood Hassan) is a powerful and notorious Indian(Sunni Muslim) Mafia kingpin. He started his career in Bombay by working for the Karim Lala gang and soon shifted residence to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates where he could mingle more freely in society. Dawood developed immense clout in the Gulf region and in India where the bulk of his illegal operations flourished. Dawood is said to have top politicians, police chiefs, businessmen and bankers in his pocket. After the Bombay Bomb Blasts, he achieved a new level of notoriety and moved to Pakistan from the UAE in order to maintain a low profile and keep away from the Indian and American intelligence units.
DawoodDawood owns several businesses and prime properties in India, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. His brother, Anees Ibrahim, is one of his key lieutenants along with Chhota Shakeel. Dawood was born to a constable and was quite poor but struck it rich after embarking on a life of crime.
According to the United States Department of Treasury, his syndicate is involved in large-scale shipments of narcotics in the U.K. and Western Europe. Its smuggling routes from South Asia, the Middle East and Africa are shared with Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network. Successful routes established over recent years by his syndicate have been subsequently utilized by Bin Laden.
In the late 1990s, he traveled in Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban. His syndicate has consistently aimed to destabilize the Indian government through inciting riots, acts of terrorism, and civil disobedience. He is currently wanted by India for the March 12, 1993 Bombay Bomb Blasts, which killed hundreds of Indians and injured over a thousand more. Information, from as recent as Fall 2002, indicates that he has financially supported Islamic militant groups working against India, such as Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT).
In 2003, the US government declared Dawood Ibrahim a Global Terrorist and froze all his assets in a bid to crack down on him and his notorious mafia operations.Last edited by Rasputin; 11-19-2005, 03:50 AM.

omerta
One of the most important rules of being part of La Cosa Nostra is omerta; the code of silence each honorable made man takes when he enters a Family. It essentially means that a made man is never to discuss any Family business or activities with any outsider (not including associates). You become a rat by breaking the code, and you'll pay with your life (it's not only the Mounties who always get their man).
It's omerta that keeps La Cosa Nostra protected and shielded from outside forces, whether it be other mob-wannabes or law enforcement. It's also part of the honor code, which also includes vows to respect the organization's rules, hierarchy, rules of conduct, and punishments for breaking any code. Above all, the honor code implies that no man is above his Family, and that no man should put anything or anybody ahead of his Family (not the other family).
In return, the Family protects and supports you (and in case of death, supports your family). You trust and rely on your Family in bad times, just like in good. That support is always there if you are loyal, productive or an influential member of the Family.
Loyalty, obedience, honor... you see a pattern emerging here? The public is fooled into thinking we are a bunch of thugs thanks to the media, but we are men above all -- honorable, educated, business-savvy men. Don't you forget that.
