فيلم رنجهای مسيح از سوی هفته نامه "انترتينمنت" به عنوان بحث انگيزترين فيلم سينمايی تا امروز شناخته شده است.
نمايش اين فيلم که ۱۲ ساعت آخر زندگی عيسی مسيح و به صليب کشيدن او را نشان می دهد، با مخالفت شديد جوامع يهودی رو به رو شد.

علت مخالفت جوامع يهودی اين است که معتقدند اين فيلم رگه هايی بر ضد نژاد سامی در خود دارد و چهره بدی از يهوديان زمان مسيح به تصوير کشيده است و آنها را عامل اصلی مرگ مسيح نشان می دهد.

در ليست مجادله انگيزترين فيلم های تاريخ سينما از ۲۵ فيلم نام برده شده و فيلم "پرتقال کوکی" ساخته استنلی کوبريک در مقام دوم جای گرفته است.

فيلم کوبريک روايتگر ماجراجويی های خشونت آميز جوانی به نام الکس است که پس از دستگير توسط پليس زير فشارهای غيرانسانی قرار می گيرد.

اين فيلم از زمان توليدش در سال ۱۹۷۱ تا امروز همواره در کانون بحث های جنجالی بود است. بسياری عقيده دارند که اين فيلم به جای آنکه خشونت را محکوم کند، مبلغ خشونت است و جوانان را به ارتکاب جنايت تشويق می کند.

از اليور استون دو فيلم در اين ليست آمده است: فيلم ج اف ک (جان اف کندی) محصول ۱۹۹۱ در مقام پنجم جای دارد و فيلم قاتلان مادرزاد در مقام هشتم.

فيلم رمز داوينچی که به تازگی به نمايش درآمد نيز به اين ليست راه يافته و در مقام ۱۳ قرار گرفته است.

اين فيلم که بر پايه رمان ران براون ساخته شده است، جنجال زيادی به پا کرد و اعتراض محافل مسيحی را برانگيخت، زيرا مدعی است که عيسی مسيح با مريم مجدليه رابطه زناشويی داشته است.

فيلم يونايتد ۹۳ که بازتابی از ماجرای انفجارهای ۱۱ سپتامبر است، نيز فيلمی مجادله انگيز خوانده شده است.
