Heard the one about the president?

The misdirected email or text message is a hazard of our age. It can sour relationships and upset the closest of our friends. But now a stray electronic missive has been blamed for a spate of arrests, a national scandal and a very grumpy president of Iran.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Islamic nation's firebrand leader, has taken umbrage at an unwelcome text received on his mobile phone. According to whispered accounts in the Iranian capital, his ire was stirred when someone sent him a joke suggesting he didn't wash regularly enough.

Although officials claim he possesses a lively sense of humour that belies his rather hairshirt image, on this occasion it suffered a serious failure. Realising the joke was doing the rounds of Iranian mobile phones, the notoriously temperamental president lodged an official complaint with Iran's judiciary department.
That in turn has acted as a pretext for an official purge of the SMS system in the country. Mr Ahmadinejad has since told his staff to pay close attention to all jokes circulating about him by text.

An anti-regime website called Rooz Online claims that under the crackdown the head of the country's mobile phone company has been sacked and four people arrested and accused of colluding with the Israeli foreign intelligence service, Mossad.

But poking fun at the president has becoming a national pastime in Iran. In a fusillade of seditious traffic, the regime's senior figures and its most sacred policies are all fair game - with Mr Ahmadinejad a particular target.

One joke tells of a man who has died and gone to hell, where he sees the famously strait-laced Mr Ahmadinejad dancing with the Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez. "Is this Ahmadinejad's punishment?" he asks.

"No," goes the reply. "It is Jennifer Lopez's punishment."

Another recent joke poked fun at Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, listing characteristics he supposedly inherited from five prophets: Muhammad, Moses, Jesus, Noah and Solomon. Insulting the supreme leader - or the prophets - is a jailing offence in devoutly religious Iran.

Others concentrate heavily on sex, another taboo with Iran's religious hierarchy. One purports to reveal official statistics of what men do after sex: "2% eat; 3% smoke; 4% take a shower; 5% go to sleep: 86% get up and go home to their wives."

The previous assumption was that this exchange of bawdy jibes and political satire could be made without detection. But now senior police officers have announced that they are acutely aware of it and say jokes intercepted could be treated as criminal behaviour.

Particular attention is being paid to jokes comparing Iran's nuclear programme with sex. Several people are widely believed to have received court summonses for sending nuclear-related jokes.

"While the outcome of the recent arrests in connection with SMS messaging is not clear yet, what is certain is that SMS jokes have already put some people into serious trouble," wrote the website Rooz Online.

The clampdown is in line with the authorities' uncompromising stance on the internet and bloggers. Wary of modern communications as a means of spreading political dissent, Iran is second only to China in the number of websites it filters - using technology made in America.

Large numbers of the nation's estimated 70,000 to 100,000 bloggers have faced harassment or imprisonment. The regime has acknowledged monitoring text message traffic. It first admitted it had access to text traffic last December when a military plane carrying more than 100 journalists crashed shortly after take-off at Tehran airport.

The communications minister said text messages were kept by the government for six months and that messages sent by those on board in the moments before the crash could be used to investigate its causes.

The first arrests over text messaging were made in the run-up to last year's presidential election when several anti-regime student leaders were detained for urging a boycott of the poll after the regime had declared voting to be an Islamic duty. "I was arrested for one evening and they made it clear they knew every SMS I had sent and received," said Muhammad Hashemi, leader of the Tahkim Vahdat student movement.

Ahmadinejad provoked a world outcry in October when he said Israel should be "wiped off the map."

On Friday, he repeated his previous line on the Holocaust, saying: "If such a disaster is true, why should the people of this region pay the price? Why does the Palestinian nation have to be suppressed and have its land occupied?"

The land of Palestine, he said, referring to the British mandated territory that includes all of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, "will be freed soon."

He did not say how this would be achieved, but insisted to the audience of at least 900 people: "Believe that Palestine will be freed soon."

"The existence of this (Israeli) regime is a permanent threat" to the Middle East, he added. "Its existence has harmed the dignity of Islamic nations."

The three-day conference on Palestine is being attended by officials of Hamas, the ruling party in the Palestinian territories.

Iran has previously said it will give money to the Palestinian Authority to make up for the withdrawal of donations by Western nations who object to Hamas' refusal to recognize Israel and renounce violence. But no figure has been published.

On Tuesday, Ahmadinejad announced that Iran had successfully enriched uranium using a battery of 164 centrifuges, a significant step toward the large-scale production of enriched uranium required for either fueling nuclear reactors or making nuclear weapons.

The United States, France and Israel accuse Iran of using a civilian nuclear program to secretly build a weapon. Iran denies this, saying its program is confined to generating electricity.

The U.N. Security Council has given Iran until April 28 to cease enrichment. But Iran has rejected the demand.

**رييسجمهور با ارسال پيامهاي جداگانه، خطاب به روساي كشورهاي اسلامي خجسته سالروز ميلاد با سعادت پيامبر عظيم الشان اسلام حضرت محمد(ص) را به دولتها و ملتهاي مسلمان تبريك گفت.

به گزارش گروه دريافت خبر خبرگزاري دانشجويان ايران(ايسنا) دكتر محمود احمدينژاد در اين پيامها، رسول مكرم اسلام (ص) را نسخه كامل و متعالي همه فضايل انبياء الهي و پيامآور معنويت، رحمت، محبت، صلح و عدالت و محور اساسي وحدت امت اسلامي دانسته و ابراز اميدواري كرده است، با بهرهگيري از حداكثر ظرفيت كشورهاي عضو سازمان كنفرانس اسلامي و رايزني و همفكري كشورهاي اسلامي، گامهاي موثر و عملي در جهت تقويت وحدت و همبستگي امت اسلامي برداشته شود.

وي در ادامه اين پيام تصريح كرده است: اگر فرهنگي را كه امام خميني(ره) پرچمدار آن بود صيانت كنيم در عين پيشرفت همه جانبه و دستيابي به همه مظاهر آن، هرگز در مسير مادي نيز متوقف نخواهيم شد، همانگونه كه فرزندان برومند اين كشور هر روز دريچههاي جديدي از علم و فناوري را ميگشايند كه آخرين آن دستيابي به فنآوري چرخه سوخت هستهيي است.

اللهم عجل لوليك الفرج و العافيه و النصر واجعلنا من خير انصاره و اعوانه و المستشهدين بين يديه

گردهمايي فرزندان شاهد، ايثارگر، آزاده و جانباز در آستانه ميلاد با سعادت حضرت ختمي مرتبت محمد مصطفي(ص) و امام جعفر صادق(ع) و در آغاز سالي كه به نام مبارك پيامبر اعظم صلي الله عليه و آله و سلم مزين شده است فرصت بسيار مباركي است تا در سايه هدايت رسول اكرم و مكتب اهل بيت عليهم السلام، رسالت خطيري را كه همگان خصوصا وارثان ثابت قدم شهيدان بر عهده دارند، مرور كنيم.

شما فرزندان بزرگ مرداني هستيد كه پيشتاز پيمودن راه كمال و نمونه انسانهاي موحد، و سالكان حقيقت و مظاهر هدايت بودند. آنان تربيت يافته مكتب انبيا و سيراب شدگان كوثر عاشورا هستند.

سلوك در مسير تعاليم الهي كه در وجود و مكتب پيامبر رحمت و پيامآور عدالت خاتم الانبيا (ص) به كمال رسيده است يعني اسلام ناب محمدي (ص) حقيقتي است كه بشر امروز چه بداند و چه نداند، تشنه آن است.

همه مصائبي كه امروز بر بشر ميگذرد، ريشه در جدا شدن از مسير هدايتي دارد كه پيامبران الهي ترسيم كرده و براي تربيت انسانها دراين مسير، با همه وجود مجاهدت كردند. خصوصا خاتم و افضل و اعظم آنان كه در رنجي كه براي هدايت و تعالي انسانها متحمل شد از همه انبيا پيشي گرفت، چنانكه خداوند متعال وجود مباركش را تسلي داد:



شهيدان چون دراين راه، با همه وجود مجاهدت كردند، شاهدان هميشه تاريخ و چلچراغ هدايت نسلها به سوي كمال و تعالي شدند.

شما فرزندان و نسل بلافصل شهيدان خصوصا شما كه راه تعليم معارف ديني و تبليغ فرهنگ متعالي دين را در كسوت مقدس روحاني برگزيدهايد، مسووليت سنگينتر و راه دشوارتري را پيش رو داريد.

انتشار فرهنگ توحيد و برافراشتن رايت عدالت، دلي نرم و ارادهاي استوار ميطلبد، تا بتواند كتاب و آهن، صلاح و سلاح، و محبت و جهاد را براي نجات بشريت در هم آميزد و اين جز با فرهنگسازي و تعميق باور و اعتقاد ديني از يك سو و رفتار و عمل صحيح و دقيق از سوي ديگر ميسر نيست. بايد ايمان و عمل صالح را با هم درآميخت تا بتوان الگو و اسوه نجات و فلاح شد. با عمل صالح و رفتار صحيح ديني است كه ميتوان دلها و ديدهها را به سوي خود معطوف نمود و مسير زندگي را به سوي توحيد، عدالت و تعالي سوق داد.

شما فرزندان روحاني شهيدان، نبايد بگذاريد عمق و عظمت اين ميراث، كه سرمايه بشريت است هبوط كند. پدران شما، صحابه و حواريون امام خميني(ره) بودند كه عصاره فضيلت و حقيقتخواهي و هدايت جامعه بود. امام، آن خير و صلاح بزرگي را كه در تعاليم رسول الله(ص) و اهل بيت طاهرينش بود به جامعه ما و جامعه بشري عرضه كرد و شهيدان با خون خويش اين نهال را كه ريشه در شجره طيبه مكتب رسول الله داشت، آبياري كردند. بايد شكوفههاي اين درخت زيبا را از گزند آفات حفاظت نمود. اگر اين فرهنگ آسيب ببيند جامعه به مناسبات ناعادلانه و جاهلانه، سقوط و هبوط خواهد كرد.

در مقابل اگر اين فرهنگ را صيانت كنيم، در عين پيشرفت همه جانبه و دستيابي به همه مظاهر آهن، هرگز در مسير مادي متوقف نخواهيم شد. همينگونه كه فرزندان برومند كشورمان با اراده و توان خود، هر روز دريچههاي جديدي از علم و فناوري را ميگشايند و برگهاي زريني بر كارنامه مجاهدت علمي خود ميافزايند و كشور را از ثمرات آن بهرهمند ميسازند، كه آخرين آن دستيابي به فناوري چرخه سوخت هستهيي است.

تفاوت اين جامعه و جوانان و دانشمندان آن با ديگر جوامع آن است كه اينان تحت تعاليم الهي و ديني، هر برگي از پيشرفت علمي را لايه نازكي از حقيقت ميدانند و مسير رسيدن به حقيقت تام را كه توحيد ناب است، گم نميكنند و با اين روش از مسير پيشرفت مادي، راه كمال و تعالي را ميگشايند. با اين فرهنگ، اخلاقيترين روش استفاده از فناوري را ميآموزند و اخلاق را با علم در ميآميزند و به كالبد بيروح و مادي فناوري، روح معنوي ميدمانند و به اين ترتيب در عمل، نمونه و الگو ميشوند.

به وجود شما افتخار ميكنم و با استمرار چنين نسلي كوشا، با اراده، فداكار و برخوردار از روح ايثار و معنويت، فرداي ايران عزيز را درخشانتر، مقتدرتر و معنويتر ميبينم.




**رييس جمهور تاكيد كرد: خدمت به مردم و فعاليت مستمر براي گسترش تفكر انقلابي زمينهساز مبارزه فراگير با استكبار جهاني است.

به گزارش گروه دريافت خبر خبرگزاري دانشجويان ايران (ايسنا) دكتر محمود احمدينژاد عصر روز شنبه در ديدار رييس مجلس ونزوئلا افزود: مبارزه با نظام سلطه ماموريت مشترك همه ملتها و دولتهاي مستقل به ويژه ايران و ونزوئلا است و ايستادگي دولتها و ملتهاي مستقل و پشتيباني آنها از يكديگر جبهه مبارزه با مستكبرين را مستحكم و گسترده ميكند.

وي با اشاره به نتايج شيرين مستقل زيستن با وجود سختيهاي آن، گفت: كشورهاي مستقل با پشتوانه ملتهاي آزاده خود و امكانات و تواناييهاي بالقوه و بالفعل فراوان ميتوانند در عين حفظ استقلال خود به پيشرفت دست يابند.

وي تاثير دستيابي ايران اسلامي به فناوري صلحآميز هستهيي را خاطرنشان كرد و گفت: هر پيشرفت علمي، اقتصادي و سياسي آزاديخواهان جهان ضربهاي بر پيكره استكبار و استعمار جهاني است.

رييس جمهور با اشاره به اينكه استكبار جهاني و در راس آنها آمريكا روز به روز در موضعي ضعيفتر قرار ميگيرد، خاطرنشان كرد: نظام سلطه و در راس آن آمريكاي جنايتكار در پي دخالتهاي خود در امور ساير كشورها، امروز در نقاط مختلف جهان دچار چالش و گرفتاري شده است و با اتحاد، استقامت و بيداري ملتهاي آزاده شكست نهايي قدرتهاي پوشالي به زودي محقق ميشود.

در اين ديدار رييس مجلس ونزوئلا نيز با اشاره به روابط مستحكم و استراتژيك كشورش با جمهوري اسلامي ايران، ضمن ابلاغ سلامهاي گرم هوگو چاوز به رييس جمهور، گفت: ونزوئلا و ديگر كشورهاي آمريكاي لاتين خواستار استفاده از تجربيات انقلابي مردم مسلمان ايران هستند.

نيكولاس مادورو با ابراز خشنودي از شركت در كنفرانس بينالمللي قدس و حمايت از حقوق مردم فلسطين پيشنهاد كرد زمينهاي براي آشنايي و همكاري گروههاي انقلابي مسلمان در منطقه خاورميانه با انقلابيون آمريكاي لاتين فراهم شود تا چهره ضدبشري امپرياليسم آمريكا بيشتر براي جهانيان آشكار شود.


**رييس جمهور با تاكيد بر اينكه دشمنان جهان اسلام از پيشرفت، استقلال و وحدت مسلمانان به شدت ناراحت ميشوند، گفت: هرجا دلهاي مسلمانان به هم نزديك شود آنها تلاش ميكنند كه تفرقه ايجاد كنند و علاقمند هستند همه جهان اسلام غيرمستقل و تحت نفوذشان باشد.

به گزارش گروه دريافت خبر خبرگزاري دانشجويان ايران(ايسنا) دكتر محمود احمدينژاد عصر روز شنبه در ديدار احمد ابراهيم الطاهر رييس مجلس سودان تاكيد كرد: دشمنان همواره دنبال فرصتي هستند كه استقلال و استحكام كشورهاي اسلامي را تضعيف كنند كه تنها راهكار براي ناكام ماندن آنها مبارزه و مقاومت است.

وي فلسطين را خط مقدم مبارزه اسلام و استكبار به رهبري آمريكا و اسرائيل دانست و با بيان اينكه قدرتهاي جهاني بيش از 6 دهه است كه با تشكيل رژيمي قلابي وحدت دولتهاي مسلمان را خدشهدار كردهاند، خاطرنشان كرد: حمايت از دولت و انتفاضه مردم فلسطين فرصتي بسيار مناسب براي وحدت دولتها و ملتهاي مسلمان در اقصي نقاط جهاني به منظور مبارزه با استكبار جهاني و متحدانش است.

وي با اشاره به اينكه دشمنان اسلام از پيشرفتها، استقلال و وحدت ملتهاي مسلمان ناراحت و هراسان ميشوند، گفت: پيشرفتهاي مسلمانان در همه عرصهها از جمله دستيابي جمهوري اسلامي ايران به فناوري صلحآميز هستهيي زمينه پيروزي امت اسلام را فراهم ميكند و اين دستاورد ايران، متعلق به همه مسلمانان و ملتهاي مستقل است.

رييس جمهور با اشاره به سالروز ميلاد پربركت پيامبر اسلام(ص) شخصيت و سيره ايشان را پيونددهنده مسلمين سراسر جهان دانست و تاكيد كرد: پيامبر اعظم(ص) و سيره ايشان سرمايه بزرگ امت اسلام و پيروي از ايشان تنها راه نجات و سعادت بشريت است.

وي در اين ديدار بر گسترش روابط جمهوري اسلامي ايران با دولتها و ملتهاي مسلمان به ويژه سودان در همه زمينهها تاكيد كرد.

احمد ابراهيم الطاهر، رييس مجلس سودان نيز در اين ديدار دستيابي جمهوري اسلامي ايران به فناوري صلحآميز هستهيي را تبريك گفت و با ابراز خشنودي از شركت در اجلاس بينالمللي قدس و حمايت از حقوق مردم فلسطين برگزاري چنين همايشهايي را براي حل مسائل جهان اسلام بسيار موثر ارزيابي كرد.

رييس مجلس سودان با قدرداني از سخنان مهم مقام معظم رهبري و رييس جمهور در جلسه افتتاحيه اين اجلاس گفت: شيطان بزرگ با استفاده از امكانات فراوان خود از جمله قدرت رسانهاي به دنبال ايجاد چالش براي كشورهاي اسلامي به منظور تضعيف آنهاست و با بزرگنمايي مسائل مربوط به آنها و تاثيرگذاري بر اذهان جهاني به دنبال دخالت و تقويت سلطه خود است.

روز سه شنبه، 25 آوريل، آقای پرز که در مراسم بزرگداشت قربانيان اردوگاه های مرگ آلمان نازی در لهستان شرکت داشت، در سخنانی گفت که هنگام ظهور هيتلر، جهانيان اظهارات يهود ستيزانه او را جدی نگرفتند و زمينه بروز جنگ دوم جهانی و کشتار يهوديان را فراهم کردند و هشدار داد که نبايد همين اشتباه در مورد رييس جمهوری ايران نيز تکرار شود.

آقای پرز که در مراسم بزرگداشت قربانيان آلمان نازی در شهر کراکو در لهستان سخن می گفت با اشاره به سخنان رييس جمهوری ايران در مورد اسرائيل، وی را متهم کرد که خواستار نابودی ملت يهود شده است.

وی گفت که هيتلر برای از ميان بردن يهوديان به ساختن اردوگاه های مرگ مبادرت ورزيد و رييس جمهوری ايران را متهم کرد که برای همين منظور در صدد دستيابی به بمب اتمی در پوشش فعاليت های صلح آميز هسته ای است.

آقای احمدی نژاد در سخنانی در گذشته خواستار محو اسرائيل از نقشه جهان شده و ايجاد اين کشور پس از جنگ دوم جهانی را ناشی از اقدام غرب در جبران بدرفتاری با يهوديان خوانده بود که هزينه آن بر فلسطينيان تحميل شده است.

وی در مصاحبه ای در روز دوشنبه همين هفته نيز مساله فلسطين را ناشی از "يهود ستيزی" غرب در گذشته توصيف کرد.

آقای پرز در راس هياتی از اسرائيل در مراسم موسوم به "راهپيمايی برای زنده ها" در لهستان شرکت می کند که از اردوگاه آشويتز آغاز می شود و تا اردوگاه مرگ برکنائو ادامه می يابد.

شيمون پرز در سال 1923 در لهستان متولد شد و در سال 1934 همراه خانواده خود به فلسطين مهاجرت کرد و پس از تاسيس کشور اسرائيل، به فعاليت های سياسی روی آورد.

وی سه بار نخست وزير و بارها عضو هيات دولت اسرائيل بوده و در سال 1994، همراه با اسحاق رابين، نخست وزير وقت اسرائيل، و ياسر عرفات، رهبر فقيد فلسطينيان، به دليل امضای تفاهم نامه اسلو بين اسرائيل و فلسطينيان به طور مشترک به دريافت جايزه صلح نوبل نايل شد.

آقای پرز از اعضای قديمی حزب چپگرای کارگر و زمانی رهبر حزب بود اما پس از جدايی آريل شارون، نخست وزير سابق اسرائيل، از حزب راستگرای ليکود و تشکيل حزب کديما، به اين حزب پيوست.

در انتخابات ماه مارس در اسرائيل، شيمون پرز به عنوان عضو حزب کديما به پارلمان راه يافت و در حال حاضر از رهبران کديما محسوب می شود

Iran president will send letter to Bush: spokesman

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will send a letter to President Bush proposing new ways to resolve "the current vulnerable situation in the world," an Iranian official said on Monday.

"In this letter, he has given an analysis of the current world situation, of the root of existing problems and of new ways of getting out of the current vulnerable situation in the world," government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham said.

Ahmadinejad had said earlier in the day that he would announce some "important news." It was not immediately clear whether he was flagging the letter to Bush.

The United States has spearheaded action against Iran's nuclear program, which it says is aimed at building atomic weapons. Iran, which has been reported to the U.N. Security Council, says it needs nuclear fuel only for power stations.

Elham told a weekly news conference Ahmadinejad's letter would be delivered to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which represents U.S. interests in Iran.

The United States and Iran severed official diplomatic ties in 1980, amid a crisis that began when a group of radical students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage.

وي درپاسخ به سوال العربيه درمورد اهميت اين نامه گفت:اهميت اين نامه دراين است كه رييس جمهوري مانند احمدي نژاد كه از جناح تندرو در ايران به حساب ميآيد، باب مذاكرات را ازطريق رد وبدل كردن نامه با آمريكا باز كرده است .
وي تصريح كرد: احمدي نژاد به خواستههاي جامعه بينالمللي بويژه "كوفي عنان" دبيركل سازمان ملل كهخواستارمذاكرات مستقيم بين آمريكا وايران شده بود، پاسخ داده است و وي با اين اقدام ميخواهد بگويد كه ايران آماده مذاكره و انتخاب راههاي مسالمت آميز ميباشد.

My letter to Ahmadinejad
A letter I would have written on behalf of President Bush


As many of you know, Ahmadinejad has recently sent a letter to President Bush discussing, amongst other things, the occupation of Palestine, nuclear technology, the war in Iraq, all of which with references to the teachings of Christ and Moses. Just by reading the letter it is clear that its message objective was not intended for reapproachment. I'm not even sure if it was intended to sincerely guide Bush.

Thus, one is left with two alternative objectives: 1) its either intended to mock the US president and point out inconsistencies in his policy and faith, or 2) intended to articulate Ahmadinejad's policy position to the Western word, by which the letter was simply intended to fan the media. I'm intended to believe in the latter position then the former, although both objectives clearly could have been in mind.

That being put aside, here's a letter I would have written on behalf of President Bush:

Dear President Ahmadinejad,

Thank you very much for your lengthy letter. For the sake of argument lets say that everything you say is true. Lets admit that the my administration has committed the crimes in which you have mentioned. My question to you, is how this justifies the repression of human rights and democracy in which your administration, your government and your supporters actively engage in.

You say that you are a peace-loving man. You campaigned for greater social freedoms. And yet your government represses the very people which seek to make it grow. Is there any doubt that had your government allowed a fair and free election wherein over 95% of electoral candidates would not have been vetted due to their disagreements with your conservative establishment, that there is no doubt whatsoever that you would not be sitting as President today.

Why do your youth flock toward my country for education and opportunity? Why do your youth seek greater freedoms and state their love for American values? Why do your youth continously object toward your regime? You attack my government's foreign policy and I thank you for that. But is it not ironic that if someone in your country had leveled the same criticism against your government as you have done against mine, that they would have been tortured and sent to jail.

Is it not ironic that had someone in your society openly attacked your government for human rights abuses and for not comporting with the religious values you assume to possess, that they would be sitting in Evin and possibly facing the death penalty as was the case with Saleh Nikbakht, Akbar Ganji, and now possibly Ramin Jahanbegloo? If I was to write the names of all those who have been innocently tortured and imprisoned by your government and under your leadership the pages would exceed number of pages devoted toward outlining your revolution.

President Ahmadinejad, your opponents, your dissidents, and your critics have been heralded as heros. Is that not the greatest testament to the atrocities so many feel are being committed by your regime?

I ask you, was it not Prophet Mohammad who preached tolerance for people of different faiths? And yet your government continues to disenfranchise, torture, and discriminate against Bahais? Was it not the Prophet who emphasized the importance of free speech and thought? And yet countless newspapers have been shut down, numerous bloggers and journalists have been imprisoned, and your intellectuals are being silenced and beaten.

Was it not Prophet Mohammad who called for humility, compassion, and forgiveness? And yet children face the death penalty in your country. Was it the Prophet Mohammad who called for free exercise of religion? And yet your government compels the practice of religion, interpreted by a authoritarian few.

Lastly, was it not the Prophet Mohammad who emphasized equality between the sexes? And yet your women are treated as second-class citizens. Can one be a follower of the Prophet Mohammad, the great Messenger of God, while committing and condoning these atrocities?

Once again, thank you for your comments. Your letter reflects the same "azadi" of thought and opinion which the world only waits and hopes your government will fully recognize and deliver to your people.

If this is Ahmadinejad's bluff, it is bluff worth calling

The only route to regime change and disarmament is engagement, so the US must respond to this week's letter from Tehran .

For a British foreign secretary Iraq is easy. It has been Tony Blair's personal, colossal, hubristic, career-wrecking mistake, and the Foreign Office need only sit by and brush his tears with tissues. Iran is different. Iran is hard, as the new foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, clearly found in New York on Monday.
Conventional wisdom can be summed up in a simple declaration that a nuclear Iran one day may be undesirable but not half as undesirable as a war on any scale likely to prevent it. Other things being equal, only arms salesmen welcome nuclear proliferation. But for America and Britain to extend military operations from Iraq and Afghanistan into Iran and start bombing would be, as Jack Straw said, inconceivable and "nuts".

But other things are never equal. The undesirability of a nuclear Iran is supposedly enforced by an international treaty to which that country still claims to subscribe. Though the treaty is all but defunct, its goals remain laudable. Besides, elements within Iran's ever-shifting coalition are known to be alarmed by the fundamentalist outbursts of President Ahmadinejad and his nuclear-enrichment boasts. How can those elements be helped? Might a few threats not do the trick?
Iran is a complex and sophisticated nation that offers more plausible diplomatic pressure points than ever did Saddam's Iraq. While Ahmadinejad may eat, drink and make merry on the Pentagon's ineptitude, he must look warily over his shoulder at his boss, Ayatollah Khamenei; at Iran's national security council under the more temperate Ali Larijani, whom Ahmadinejad does not control; and at his old foe, Akbar Rafsanjani.

A detailed survey of US-Iranian relations in March's New Yorker revealed the full extent of bilateral contacts until they were stymied, first by Bush's 2003 neocon national security directive and then by his ham-fisted intervention in the 2005 Iranian election, which helped Ahmadinejad to power. Even today there are plenty of Iranians who want no quarrel with America, and certainly not with America, Russia and China together. It is probably they who forced Ahmadinejad to send Monday's dovish letter to Washington, to which the Republican head of the Senate foreign relations committee, Richard Lugar, thinks America should respond.

This is the "engagement" strategy that Straw was adopting, to the increasing dismay of Blair and the White House, when he was toppled. Its shortcoming was to lack the belligerent machismo that is the default mode of London and Washington - and now of Ahmadinejad in Tehran. Just as the latter is Bush's ideal raving Islamicist, so Bush is the latter's ideal raving western imperialist. The collapse of the occupation of Iraq offers Tehran a daily foretaste of the glory awaiting Iran's soldiers and their surrogate militias across the Middle East should America launch an attack. Each sabre rattled in Washington is music to the army's ears, as it bids to spend Iran's swollen oil revenues on rearmament.

The trouble with big-stick diplomacy in this case is that its implied deterrence is implausible. There is no conceivable justification for a military attack on Iran when Bush's own intelligence chief, John Negroponte, puts a minimum of "five to 10 years" on its acquisition of weapons-grade plutonium. Bombing factories might impede this but not stop it from happening sooner or later, and would clearly induce Tehran to make that sooner. But then even Russia at its most paranoid and North Korea at its craziest never used nuclear bombs. They are not weapons or deterrents, merely status symbols. And America's acceptance of them in the hands of Pakistan, India and Israel is a gift to the xenophobic rabble-rousers of Tehran.

Washington can spend millions on pirate Tehran broadcasts, but moderate Iranians are crying to the west to stop bolstering Ahmadinejad. It is doing to him what it did to Saddam, putting him on television every night as a global champion of Islam. The one hope of curbing his rhetorical excesses is for his own people to rein him in, and that cannot happen when the west continues to make him regional hero number one. Bush seems unable to comprehend that his castigating a Muslim leader is not an insult but an accolade.

Everything I have read and heard about Iran suggests it is a nation to be approached with wary realism. The west has always misunderstood Tehran, always backed the wrong leader. It is now paying a terrible price for not supporting Iran in its war with Iraq. This oil-rich state of some 60m people may be administratively chaotic, but it is socially and politically subtle. Oil from anywhere will always find a market, but Egypt and Iran are two regional powers with whom a sane west should stay engaged. In the argot of old Washington, whoever rules in Tehran should be "our fundamentalist".

Bush and Blair have given Ahmadinejad a remarkable hand of cards. He can now impose his own economic and military sanctions on the west. He can force up the price of oil and traumatise insurance premiums in the Strait of Hormuz. While his control over the Shia brigades in Iraq may be overstated, he can orchestrate lethal pressure on the occupying forces and watch as public opinion in Britain and America devastates their leaders.
